  • LGS, Beaconhouse, Roots among top schools in trouble for forcing costly stationery, uniform upon students

LGS, Beaconhouse, Roots among top schools in trouble for forcing costly stationery, uniform upon students

The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has issued show-cause notices to 17 major private school systems for allegedly abusing their dominant position by compelling parents to purchase expensive logo-branded notebooks, workbooks and uniforms exclusively from school-authorised vendors.

According to reports, the move aims to safeguard millions of school-going children and their families from unfair pricing practices and follows a detailed suo motu inquiry initiated after numerous complaints from parents, guardians and other stakeholders.

Complainants accused schools of arbitrary fee hikes, non-transparent selling practices and bundling mandatory branded supplies, leaving families with no choice but to purchase these items at inflated prices. Many parents reported that schools were blocking the use of cheaper non-branded alternatives, further straining household budgets.

The schools under scrutiny include Beaconhouse School System, The City School, Headstart, Lahore Grammar School (LGS), Froebel’s, Roots International, Roots Millennium, KIPS, Allied Schools, Super Nova, Dar-e-Arqam, STEP School, Westminster International, United Charter School and The Smart School, among others.

Collectively these networks operate hundreds of campuses nationwide and educate millions of students, giving them considerable influence over enrolled families.

The CCP’s inquiry revealed that parents were mandated to buy logo-bearing notebooks, workbooks, uniforms and other ancillary products from exclusive school-authorised outlets. In several cases, schools sold compulsory “study packs” through online portals or designated vendors, prohibiting students from using generic notebooks or uniforms available in the open market. The Commission defined the relevant markets as the provision of education services where each school enjoyed a 100% market share, making students “captive consumers,” and the market for ancillary school products which became the “tied market.”

The inquiry report concluded that many study packs were up to 280% more expensive than similar items available in open markets. Leading school systems engaged in tying arrangements, making continued enrollment conditional upon purchasing secondary products such as notebooks and uniforms. Schools also appointed exclusive vendors, foreclosing the market for thousands of small stationery and uniform sellers nationwide. The CCP found that mandatory branded supplies and restrictive trading conditions violated Sections 4(1) and 4(2)(a) of the Competition Act, 2010.

High switching costs, including limited school options, substantial transfer fees and transportation constraints, left parents with no viable alternatives, enabling schools to enforce these practices without resistance. The CCP observed that such practices restricted market access, harmed small retailers and limited consumer choice across Pakistan. With private educational institutions accounting for nearly half of all student enrollment in the country, the imposition of overpriced branded materials has further burdened families already struggling with inflation, raising concerns about excessive commercialization in the education sector.

The CCP has directed the school systems to submit written responses within 14 days, appear before the commission through duly authorised representatives and explain why enforcement orders under Section 31 and penalties under Section 38 should not be imposed. Failure to comply may result in ex-parte proceedings.

Under the law, the Commission may impose a penalty of up to 10% of the annual turnover or Rs750 million, whichever is higher, for such violations.

FACT CHECK: Did martyred Maj Adnan Aslam’s father chant ‘Imran Khan Zindabad’?

Two days after the funeral of martyred Major Adnan Aslam, a viral video from the ceremony has been shared with the claim that it shows his father chanting incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan’s name.

Major Adnan succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday after being critically injured while protecting a fallen comrade from gunfire during an operation in Bannu on Sept 2. Drone footage of the encounter had also gone viral over the internet, highlighting Major Adnan’s bravery and commitment, drawing praise from all quarters.

With visuals from his funeral taking over the internet by storm, it was claimed that one of the videos showed his father chanting ‘Imran Khan Zindabad’. It was first shared on X by a user named ‘ZEShan’, who has more than 63,000 followers. “Breaking News. The father of martyred Major Adnan Aslam also raised the slogan of Long Live Imran Khan [sic],” he wrote.

By the filing of this report, the post had garnered 175,000 views and had been retweeted over 4,900 times.

As thousands of other social media users share the video with the same caption here, here, here and here, The Current conducted a thorough investigation, concluding that the claim was false.

The video actually showed Maj Adnan’s father chanting “Adnan [Aslam] Khan Zindabad” along with other slogans, including Naraa-e-Takbeer and Pakistan Zindabad.

The misleading caption resulted in the creation of an auditory illusion, which is a false perception of sound where the brain misinterprets it due to conflicting information.

FACT CHECK: Did Trump just call Modi out for not responding to his tweets?

A screenshot of United States (US) President Donald Trump’s Truth Social post that called Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi out for not responding to the announcement of whopping 25 per cent reciprocal tariffs on New Delhi, has turned out to be fake.

“So hard to believe that Prime Minister Modi STILL has not responded to my tweets, statements or tariffs concerns. We gave India so much, great deals, defense support, big crowds and yet, TOTAL SILENCE. Not even a thankyou [sic],” read the post, a screenshot of which went viral on social media on Friday.

“Don’t forgot I am the one who got India and Pakistan to declare a ceasefire. Nobody else could do that. Many people said I should have gotten the Nobel Prize for it!!,” it read, adding that India “continued to benefit while American workers suffer”.

“I have always liked Modi but this kind of disrespect will NOT be forgotten. Bad for business, bad for friendship #AmericaFirst,” the post said.

With a screenshot of the post going viral and several social media users sharing it, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), here, here and here, The Current conducted a thorough investigation into the authenticity of the screenshot, reviewing all of President Trump’s posts on Truth Social over the past 24 hours.

Going through all 40 posts shared by the US president on Truth Social over the past day, The Current was unable to find the one wherein he directly called out the Indian premier.

While any cached records were also not found– used to verify authenticity in case of post deletion – The Current discovered that the screenshot being shared online originated from an account named Wokeflix, a digital outlet that falsely attributed the statement to President Trump.

Fact Check: Has federal govt banned Saadat Hasan Manto’s writings?

A notification has been circulated online claiming that the Government of Pakistan has imposed a ban on the publication, distribution, and promotion of the writings of renowned short story writer Saadat Hasan Manto by deeming his writing obscene and contrary to public decency and morality.

The notification, inscribed with the date of June 22, 2025, claims to be issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (National Heritage and Culture Division).

The notification reads, “All educational institutions across Pakistan are instructed to remove the works of Saadat Hasan Manto from their syllabi, libraries, and reading lists effective immediately.”

All electronic and print media outlets have been instructed to prohibit publishing or airing any writing or excerpts of the author, the notification noted. It further advised social media platforms and digital content distributors to take down all content based on Manto’s writing.

The notification said that if the instructions are not followed, then legal action shall be initiated under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) and other applicable laws.

Similarly, as per the notification, booksellers, publishers, and online vendors were directed to cease the sale and circulation of all books authored by Manto.

The notification was circulated on social media platforms, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), which it can be seen here, and here.

    Is the notification real?

The Current examined the notification closely and found it to be fabricated based on the fact that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s website has not published any such notification.

The notification also lacks  public announcement or media coverage. Additionally, a keyword search has also not found any such notification being issued officially.

Meanwhile, historical precedent exists for the censorship of Manto’s works. One of the greatest writers of the Urdu language, Manto was known for his brutally realistic portrayal of life and its stinging moral and political commentary.

Manto was put on trial several times for spreading obscenity through his short story Thanda Gosht and was penalised for writing something that may have been violent and explicit.

  • TCM removes viral interview hitting out at Ehd-e-Wafa

TCM removes viral interview hitting out at Ehd-e-Wafa

A digital news network, The Centrum Media (TCM) Originals, has removed a video featuring actor and social media activist Adeel Afzal criticising the script of the drama serial Ehd-e-Wafa.

The video was removed from all social media platforms days after a short clip from it went viral online.

In the video, the social media activist launched a scathing critique of the drama’s script, arguing that Ahad Raza Mir’s character, army officer Saad Faraz, was glorified while the other main characters were downplayed. Afzal declared the script a biased narrative with an unbalanced portrayal of characters.

The drama’s main story revolves around four friends, Saad, Shahzain, Shariq, and Shehryar, who pursue careers in prestigious fields after completing their education at Lawrence College in Murree.

Ahad Raza Mir’s character, Saad, is depicted as a disciplined and courageous army officer dedicated to the defense of the nation, while Osama Khalid Butt’s character, Malik Shahzain, is portrayed as ambitious yet flawed. Later, he steps into politics.

Wahaj Ali’s character, Shariq Habeeb, becomes a journalist who is ambitious about uncovering the truth and passionate about using his words as his weapon. Ahmed Ali Akbar’s character, Shehryar, hails from a lower-middle-class family, clears the prestigious Central Superior Services (CSS) exams, and becomes an Assistant Commissioner (AC).

Storyteller Adeel Afzal sharply criticised Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) for allegedly funding the drama, which, according to him, portrayed politicians, journalists, and bureaucrats as inferior.

He objected to the script for painting the politician character as “negative” and uninterested in education, while politician grandfather’s character was portrayed as “funny.”

Afzal further highlighted that the drama depicted the journalist’s family background as mediocre, pointing out that “the journalist’s sister was shown as a nurse” who had a court marriage, and Shariq himself was portrayed as a cunning boy before entering journalism.

Taking a dig at the drama’s script for portraying the army officer, his family, and even his dog as noble while depicting other characters as unintelligent and inferior in status and respect, he asked, “Ye drama aap banayenge? Ye investment aap karenge? Kin se likhwa rahe hain, kin se banwa rahe hain?” (“Will you make such a drama? Will you invest in it? Who are you getting it written by, and who are you getting it filmed by?”)

“Hum aap ki is game se tang aa chuke hain (We are tired of this game of yours),” he concluded.

Later in the day, the interview in question was reuploaded with said part trimmed out.

  • BEWARE: Group ‘honey-trapping’ youngsters in blasphemy on social media

BEWARE: Group ‘honey-trapping’ youngsters in blasphemy on social media

A report issued by the Special Branch in Punjab has revealed that over 400 young boys and girls are reportedly being persecuted in Pakistan under the blasphemy law for sharing blasphemous content on the internet.

The report stated that the suspicious gang “The Blasphemy Business” trapped young boys and girls into “committing” blasphemy and then reported them to the Federal Investigating Agency (FIA). The gang is reportedly doing this heinous act for financial gain.

Young prisoners under blasphemy charges are reportedly from diverse fields, including Hafiz-e-Quran, software engineers, electrical, mechanical, civil and chemical engineers. All of the blasphemy victims belong to poor and middle-class families, the report said.

FIA confirmed receiving the report on the “The Blasphemy Business” group in January 2024, in which it mentioned that a special gang is a complainant in 90 per cent of blasphemy cases, the document added.

Moreover, the document noted that reportedly the “The Blasphemy Business” has been headed by a lawyer, Rao Abdur Raheem Advocate, based in Islamabad, whose Whatsapp account is linked to a mobile number in Spain that was reportedly involved in malpractice and under his chairmanship, the gang is involved in trapping youth in blasphemy cases and then extorting money from the accused.

In an interview with Fact Focus, responding to the extreme punishment and the possibility of unintentional errors by some of the accused, the lawyer said, “If any part of the body is affected by cancer, that part is cut out. There is no other solution.”

How did the group trap naive youth?

The report disclosed that obscene images with objectionable material were sent to the victims via WhatsApp; when the receiver protested, the sender denied that he initially sent it and then asked for the image to be shown.

The recipient would resend the picture, after which the sender would block them; later, the recipient would be arrested and accused of originating the blasphemous content, the report said.

The report explained that the gang further runs social media groups named “United Mazhabi Story, Laiba Mazhabi King and Azad Mazhabi Ilam,” where their modus operandi of trapping innocents is the same as described above.

The 40 families of victims of blasphemy cases peacefully protested outside the National Press Club Islamabad on October 2, 2024, and demanded the federal government set up an inquiry commission under the Inquiry Commission Act to investigate the issue.

Prominent journalist Ali Hamza reported that Advocate Usman Warraich is representing the victim’s family in a petition filed in Islamabad High Court (IHC) to probe the Special Branch Punjab Report.

Warraich said: “At least 400 families are suffering because of these allegations.”

“We were instructed in a letter to bring your son [at the police station] for inquiry. As responsible citizens, we produced our son before police….when we informed them [police] that our son is blind and incapable of committing any wrongdoing, taftishi (investigator) put my son behind bars and demanded one lac rupees for my son’s release,” alleged victim’s mother, Saeeda Bibi, while speaking to Voicepkdotnet on Sunday (January 12) in Islamabad.

“We are poor people; they [police] conducted two raids on our home, and broke down its walls,” she haltingly said, adding that she has been fighting her son’s case for three years, and the legal expenses have led them to the brink of bankruptcy.

Currently, Sardar Saleem Haider Khan serves as the Governor of Punjab, while Faisal Karim Kundi holds the Governor’s position in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Kamran Tessori is the Governor of Sindh, and Sheikh Jaffar Khan Mandokhail represents the federal government as the Governor of Balochistan.

However, except for the Governor of Sindh, Kamran Tessori, no other Governor reacted to the Vawda claim.

Syed Muzammil Shah’s residence comes under attack

Journalist and social critic Syed Muzammil Shah’s residence in Lahore came under attack on Tuesday night when two of his neighbours opened aerial fire while attempting to break into his home.

    1733385784-HT5N55ZJZQ.jpg

Muzammil Shah broke the news a day after the attack on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, noting, “Two armed men from a neighbouring house, who seems to have taken offence over my recent political opinions, entered the premises of my house around 5: 30 PM yesterday in my absence.”

Syed Muzammil Shah’s recent video on his YouTube channel was named “Drop scene of Imran Khan’s Final Call,” in which he criticised the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for its aggressive approach towards the federal capital on the “final call” of party founder Imran Khan.

    1733386258-IUUHKG01QH.jpg

Muzammil had also slammed Prime Minister’s (PM) Shehbaz Sharif-led government over their handling of the former ruling party’s protest march, saying, “They [PTI convoy] were supposed to come from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and you [Mohsin Naqvi] shut down all of Punjab.”

Additionally, Shah, in his vlog, said that both parties, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and PTI have a fascist mindset, placing them in the same category: “It is intra-fascist conflict.”

However, Syed Muzammil Shah’s other video was published recently, along with Muneeb Qadir, but by the time the story was edited, the video was privatised.

Despite two First Information Reports (FIRs) being registered, Shah voiced his frustration, saying, “The main culprit, Naveed, is still at large who openly threatened to gun me down.”

“If I or my family are harmed, the authorities ought to take responsibility,” he added.

Shah, a philosophy enthusiast, has 194 videos on his YouTube channel. He started his career as a newscaster after completing a master’s degree in politics from Forman Christian (FC). Currently, he hosts the talk show ‘Statecraft’ on Express News.

Pakistani journalist fraternity and social critics condemned the incident.

Here’s how Justice Mansoor Ali Shah reacted to Yahya Afridi’s appointment as CJP

A claim regarding Justice Mansoor Ali Shah’s reaction to Justice Yahya Afridi’s appointment as the next chief justice of Pakistan (CJP), has taken the internet by storm.

Justice Shah, who was next in line to be the CJP on the basis of seniority, was on Tuesday sidelined for the appointment of Justice Yahya Afridi, as a Special Parliamentary Committee, formed under the 26th Amendment, nominated the latter instead.

The committee, with a two-thirds majority, referred Justice Afridi’s name to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who later forwarded it to President Asif Ali Zardari for a final nod.

With the Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar announcing the decision of the parliamentary committee last night, senior journalist Meher Bokhari shared on X (formerly Twitter) a claim regarding Justice Shah’s reaction to the news.

“Just spoke to a close family member of Justice Mansoor Ali Shah. He said, ‘I am fine and going off to sleep and need to go early to SC [sic],” she claimed

It wasn’t later when social media was flooded with commentary on Justice Shah’s reaction.

One user trolled Meher Bokhari and said, “It was quite a revelation indeed. I also talked to a family member of Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, and he said, ‘I’ll wake up and brush my teeth.”

“Sanu ki paway lambi taan kay sawy ya choti,” another user posted.

Optimistically, one X user wrote, “Justice Mansoor Ali Shah’s commitment to his duty speaks volumes. Let’s hope his integrity remains intact amidst all the political pressure.”
