  • Venkatesh Prasad deletes viral tweet about Jay Shah, abuses Muslim journalist for sharing screenshot

Former Indian cricketer Venkatesh Prasad on Saturday tweeted what many social media users believe was a cryptic tweet targeting Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Jay Shah, who is also secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

“It takes one corrupt, arrogant guy to take away the hard work of an organisation that is generally non-corrupt and get a stamp of corruption on the whole leadership, not just on a micro level but at a large level.”

Prasad’s tweet made many X (former Twitter) users speculate if the former cricketer had targeted BCCI and Jay Shah, son of Indian Home Minister Amit Shah. However, Prasad soon deleted his tweet.

Indian journalist and fact-checker Mohammed Zubair posted a screenshot of the tweet deleted by Prasad.

AltNews co-founder Zubair was not the only one who posted a screenshot of Prasad’s deleted tweet. Many news outlets did a story on it as well. However, Prasad chose to target and abuse Zubair in a racist and bigoted tweet.

Prasad quote-tweeted Zubair and wrote: “Haha.. Says a serial hate- monger, who has put so many lives in danger for his agenda. You disguising as a fact-checker is like Terrorists talking about peace. Now post that you need money to survive and ask for donation for your website, no shame in living off by fooling people.”

In response, Zubair said that he hopes Prasad will be forgiven for his tweet on BCCI by his “political masters for compensating by abusing and comparing” him to “terrorists”.

One user pointed out that Venkatesh Prasad’s manager is Amritanshu Gupta, a known right-wing BJP supporter, which is why Prasad’s language is of right-wing trolls.

Many X users called out the former Indian cricketer for his bigoted and hateful tweet against a Muslim journalist in India.

Sindh’s caretaker Interior Minister clarifies statement on mobile snatching

Earlier this month, while talking to the media, Sindh’s caretaker Interior Minister Brigadier (R) Haris Nawaz said that people should keep their mobile phone in a place where it cannot be stolen, or keep the mobile phone in an inner pocket.

His comment led to trolling across social media as people deemed his statement absurd.

The interior minister has now clarified his statement in a short video comment published by Times of Karachi.

He stated that he meant a mobile phone can easily be snatched if it is in one’s hand instead of the pocket.

Nonetheless, he added that no one should resist when someone tries to snatch the phone at gunpoint, and ensure the safety of one’s own family.

Sugar price expected to drop below Rs150 per kg

The Punjab caretaker government successfully resolved the issue of high sugar prices in the country through negotiations with sugar mill owners.

A delegation from the sugar mill owners met with Punjab Caretaker Chief Minister (CM) Mohsin Naqvi. Both sides agreed to start sugarcane crushing on October 28.

According to ARY, sugar mill owners agreed to sell sugar to the Punjab government at Rs140 per kilogramme, and the provincial government planned to distribute the sugar stocks through special stalls in model markets.

CM Naqvi acknowledged the financial difficulties faced by citizens and promised to lower sugar prices to provide relief.

Despite the commerce ministry denying any sugar shortages, prices had surged to over Rs200 per kilogramme in various cities across the country.

This led citizens in Quetta and Sukkur to buy sugar at Rs220 per kg, while Karachi markets sold it for Rs180 to Rs200 per kg.

Similarly, sugar prices rose to Rs195 to Rs200/kg in Lahore, Jhang, and Faisalabad.

Previously, it was reported that sugar prices reached a record high of Rs220 per kg in Balochistan’s retail markets.

Authorities initiated an investigation into the price increase and tightened scrutiny on sugar mill owners and dealers in Lahore. The Punjab government planned to take action to reduce the soaring sugar prices.

  • Ex-Pakistani cricketer Khalid Latif gets 12 years for inciting murder of Islamophobic Dutch politician

Ex-Pakistani cricketer Khalid Latif gets 12 years for inciting murder of Islamophobic Dutch politician

Former Pakistani cricketer Khalid Latif has been sentenced to 12 years in prison by a Dutch court on Monday (September 11) for inciting murder of far-right politician Geert Wilders. Latif was being tried in absentia in the Netherlands.

Last month, prosecutors informed judges that they were requesting a 12-year sentence for a former cricketer from Pakistan who was on trial in absentia for inciting people to kill Dutch far-right politician Geert Wilders in 2018.

The suspect, 37-year-old former cricketer Khalid Latif, resides in Pakistan. He is accused of inciting murder, inciting criminal behaviour, and threatening to harm Wilders.

According to the prosecution, Latif published a video in 2018 proposing a reward for the assassination of Wilders worth around 21,000 euros at the time.
Wilders released the video in which he declared his intention to conduct a cartoon competition featuring caricatures of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). However, the contest was cancelled.

Caricatures of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) are incredibly offensive to all Muslims.

Latif was directly addressed by Wilders in his victim statement, in which he declared that he would not be intimidated.

“Your call to kill me and offer a reward is despicable and will not silence me,” he declared in court.

According to the South China Morning Post, it is extremely unlikely that Latif will serve his sentence. “Dutch authorities have sought in vain to question Latif over the case and requested legal help from Pakistan, also to no avail.”

Imran Khan files petition against superintendent jail after not being allowed to talk to sons

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has filed a petition against the superintendent of Attock jail on Monday for not allowing him to speak to his sons over the phone.

Khan is in custody until September 13 under the cypher case. He had been arrested on August 5 in the Tosha Khana case, and since then he has been in Attock jail.

Last month, Khan was allowed to speak to his sons over the phone by a special court formed to hear cases registered under the Official Secrets Act.

However, Imran Khan has claimed in his petition against the Attock jail superintendent that he is not following the court orders.

Judge Abdul Hasnat Zulqarnain has issued a notice to the superintendent, asking for the submission of an implementation report of the court’s orders on September 15.

  • Morocco’s earthquake death toll rises above 2,100

The total number of people who died in Friday’s deadly earthquake in Morocco has risen to 2,122 with the number set to rise further as recovery operations proceed.

On Friday night, around 11:11 pm local time, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck the area around the ancient city of Marrakech, with tremors spreading deep into rural communities on Atlas Mountains.

The country has announced a three-day mourning period as local and foreign rescuers mount frantic searches for survivors buried beneath rubble.

The earthquake, originating from the High Atlas Mountains located southwest of Marrakesh, was felt across the country, including in the provinces of Ouarzazate, Marrakesh, Azilal, Chichaoua and Taroudant; travelling all the way to southern Spain.

As of now, 2,421 people have been injured while the United Nations has estimated that about 300,000 people have been affected.

Since the catastrophe, locals have been sleeping on the streets in towns and cities. Rural areas have taken a huge blow, while a historically significant 12th century mosque has also collapsed along with parts of Marrakech old city, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Al-Jazeera spoke with Lanchen Haddad, a Moroccan senator and former minister, who said that the area was “not known for being active in terms of earthquakes”.

“There’s not been very many earthquakes in that part of Morocco, most occur in the area much farther north on the Mediterranean coast near the tectonic plate,”

    World offers aid

The rescue operation in remote mountain areas was mainly undertaken by local teams and no broad demand for international aid had been issued by the capital, Rabat, up till Sunday.

Many countries have offered aid to Morocco including Spain, Tunisia, Qatar, Italy, Israel.
Turkey, US and Taiwan have rescue teams and specialist search ready and are ready to dispatch their aid as soon as Morocco send a green signal.

Its neighbour, Algeria, has a frictional relationship with Morocco, but after the tragedy, it opened its airspace that was closed for two years, to ease the flights carrying humanitarian aid and the injured.

At the G20 Summit in New Delhi, President Emmanuel Macron said, “France is ready to offer aid to Morocco if Morocco decides it is useful,”

“The second they request this aid, it will be deployed,” he added.

  • Pakistani currency strengthens amid crackdown on smuggling

Pakistani currency strengthens amid crackdown on smuggling

The Pakistani rupee continued its upward trajectory against the US dollar, registering a 0.6 per cent appreciation in the inter-bank market on Monday.

At precisely 2:15 pm, the rupee was quoted at Rs301.10, marking a notable increase of Rs1.85 within the inter-bank market.

In the preceding week, the rupee exhibited a 0.83 per cent gain, concluding at 302.95 in its exchange rate against the US dollar within the inter-bank arena. However, this performance is only part of a larger narrative, as the gap between the inter-bank and open market rates underwent a substantial reduction.

This shift occurred in conjunction with reported measures taken to combat smuggling and speculative activities, leading to a remarkable turnaround for the currency after it had reached a record low just the previous Tuesday.

The State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) initiative to fortify controls over Exchange Companies, coupled with reports of the army chief’s intervention and the deployment of law-enforcement personnel at currency dealer outlets, played pivotal roles in the rupee’s resurgence.
