  • CCTV camera points towards Khan’s open bathroom in prison cell, judge takes notice

    Additional District and Sessions Judge Shafqut Ullah Khan has termed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s privacy concerns “genuine” regarding the presence of a CCTV camera around his toilet at Attock jail. Imran Khan had claimed that the camera breached his privacy, with the judge asserting in a report after an inspection of the prison facilities that the camera violated prison rules.

    Punjab Prisons Department, in response to Additional District and Sessions Judge Shafqut Ullah Khan’s report, stated that Khan is being provided with all the facilities in accordance with Pakistan Prison Rules, 1978.

    A new toilet with five feet high walls, a door, and toiletries have been constructed in his cell. The statement said Khan was also given a bed, pillow, mattress, table, chair, air cooler, exhaust fan, fruit, honey, dates, prayer mat, Holy Quran with English translation, several books for reading, a thermos with tea, newspapers and tissue papers.

    The statement further reads that five doctors have been appointed to provide medical facilities to Khan, “One doctor is present at all times on an eight-hour duty.” Special meals are given to Khan as per the doctor’s advice and with the approval of Punjab Inspector General of Prisons Mian Farooq Nazir. It further said the meals are served by a special team after a doctor’s inspection.

    The prisons department confirmed that Imran was allowed to meet his family on Tuesdays and lawyers on Thursdays.

    “CCTV cameras have been installed outside Imran Khan’s room for his and the jail’s security. More than 4,000 CCTV cameras have been installed not only in District Jail Attock but also in other jails of Punjab for security purposes,” the statement concluded.

    Caretaker Interior Minister Sarfaraz Bugti, while speaking on the Geo News show ‘Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath’, reassured the viewers that Imran Khan was allowed to meet visitors and provided facilities according to the prison class he had applied for. He said that the concerns raised in the inspection report, including those related to the CCTV camera, would be thoroughly investigated and addressed in accordance with the law.

    “We will ensure that all those facilities and class he (Imran) applied for and deserves as the ex-prime minister according to the law are provided to him. As far as I know, he has a bed and newspaper so the behavior with him will be according to whatever the law permits,” he said.

    Additional District and Sessions Judge Shafqut Ullah Khan visited Attock jail and compiled a report on 15 August, after his fortnightly inspection of the prison facilities, which was released on August 21. The report stated that Khan’s concern regarding the presence of CCTV cameras is genuine and is in violation of the prison rules 257 and 771.

    Rule 257 (Sanitary and bathing arrangements) of the Pakistan Prison Rules states: “Prisoners shall be granted adequate facilities for bathing and latrines, ensuring privacy.”

    Meanwhile, Rule 771 refers to “latrines,” specifying that “latrine floors should be elevated and frequently renewed. Each latrine must have a proper seat and partitions for the sake of privacy.”

    The judge further noted in his report that the superintendent of police present has provided assurance to address the grievance raised by the PTI chairman.

    The PTI’s official X (former Twitter) account tweeted in response to the report “Absolutely shameful how a national hero, former Prime Minister Imran Khan is being denied his fundamental human rights, and basic facilities he’s entitled to.”

    ‘Baby killer’ Lucy Letby will spend the rest of her life in prison

    Lucy Letby, the newborn murdering serial killer, has been sentenced to life imprisonment on Monday by a Manchester court. The 33-year-old nurse was convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six more while on duty in the children’s ward at the Countess of Chester Hospital in northwest England.

    Manchester Crown Court judge Justice Gross said at the sentencing, “You acted in a way that was completely contrary to the normal human instincts of nurturing and caring for babies.”

    Her offences also include “inappropriate remarks” she made after the deaths of the babies.
    “Lucy Letby has destroyed our lives. The anger and the hatred I have towards her will never go away. It has destroyed me as a man and as a father,” said a father of two babies murdered by Letby.

    The former nurse, however, was not present in the courtroom during her sentence hearing nor did she follow the hearing via videolink from prison.

    According to Sky New, Judges have the choice to compel people to appear before them for sentencing but it is reliant on prison governors to execute this order as it would be their staff who would have to force someone from their cell. Nonetheless, an extra two years can be added to a sentence if the person refuses to attend the court.

    The parents of the victims were present at the sentencing. One mother said, “Even in these final days of the trial, she tried to control things, the disrespect she has shown the families and the court show what type of person she is.

    “We have attended court day in and day out, yet she decides she has had enough, and stays in her cell, just one final act of wickedness from a coward.”

    Journalists Josh Halliday, present in the courtroom, tweeted: “The most harrowing two hours I’ve ever spent in a courtroom. I spent some of it writing through tears. The families’ statements – delivered to an empty dock where Letby should have been sitting – were utterly shocking from start to finish.”

    The Letby Case

    Senior doctors became concerned with a sudden rise in medical emergencies and deaths of babies at the neonatal unit from January 2015 to a span of 18 months. In each case, the child would suddenly develop life threatening complications.

    Police were soon asked to look into the matter, and they quickly honed in to Lucy Letby, present at each of the emergencies, usually during the night shift.

    She was arrested in July 2018 and then in June 2019. She was arrested once again in November 2020 and was charged with murder and murder attempts between June 2015 and July 2016.

    According to the prosecutors, Letby tried to kill 17 babies. It is said that while the babies were in the ward, Letby would give them lethal amounts of insulin, inject air into their bloodstream or stomach, or give them excessive milk.

    Her victims include a pair of twins as well as two siblings whom she killed on consecutive days. The youngest victim was a day old while the oldest was an 11 weeks old girl who Letby tried to kill four times till she finally succeeded. Additionally, among premature babies were hopeful cases whose improving condition worsened during the nights shift when Letby was on duty.

    As per Reuters, the police have not been able to conclude the motive behind the attacks. “Unfortunately, I don’t think we’ll ever know unless she just chooses to tell us,” said Detective Superintendent Paul Hughes, who led the investigation.

    Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Evans, the deputy senior investigating officer, said that Letby had a “healthy social life, she had a circle of friends, she had her parents and holidays”. She claims that police could not find anything unusual for “a woman of her age at that point in her life”.

    However, as reported by CNN, handwritten notes and memos were found during a search of her house that read, “I don’t deserve to live. I killed them on purpose because I’m not good enough to care for them,” and “I am a horrible evil person” and in capital letters “I am evil I did this.”

    Police will be reviewing Letby’s career before the period covered under the charges at Countess of Chester Hospital and at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital where she had spent part of her training.

    More than 4,000 babies were admitted in the two hospitals between 2012 to 2016. And while every admission will be thoroughly reviewed, only the “concerning” cases will be further investigated, say Hughes.

    “Those pictures were given to them by their fiancés,” revealed Shahista. “Then I tell them that they should get rid of this man first. Can you imagine? It’s such an insult for a man to tell you to look like this woman.”

    Shahista shared another horrifying instance where a patient came with her husband, who jokingly asked the surgeon to make his wife look like her. The actress recalled feeling outraged and wanting to lash out at the man.

    “You can see the way women are treated in our society,” lamented the ‘Pardes’ actress. “That girl was sitting in a corner and politely laughing while I wanted to slap him right away. But that woman kept silent, even though it must be torturous for her to stay with such a man who keeps taunting her with things like ‘Tumharay baal hain’, ‘tumharay boaht ziada baal hain’..”

    Shahista Lodhi said women are consistently scrutinized and made to feel inferior because of their looks, and bullied by their in-laws over things like their skin coloror body type. She went on to point out that these things don’t prove that there is a problem with women, but it is men who have complexes.

    Shahista further stressed that if people want to get plastic surgery, they should, but never at the cost of their insecurities.

    When asked about she deals with women coming to her wanting to change features, Shahista spoke about the time a woman came to her clinic asking to remove her stretch marks because she was kicked out her house- which completely shocked the actress.

    “Three days ago a woman came to me and said she recently delivered a baby, and her husband kicked her out of the house because of her stretch marks. And the woman had been staying at her mother’s house for the past 20 days.

    “I tried in any way I could to console her and tell her she’s earned this. Allah made you a gift, and you’re not alone in this. How could a man tell you this!”

    Shahista re-called the woman begging her to fix her marks so she might save her marriage, and the actress said “If you think fixing your stretch marks would save your marriage, then its better such a union never happened!”

    Kudo’s to Shahista for taking such a powerful standard against imposing such beauty standards on women- and reminding them that its not worth fixing a marriage where you are imposed into taking such measures.

    X Blue users will have to send selfie, data to Israeli software company

    PC Magazine has reported that X, previously known as Twitter, will soon require its Blue users to provide a selfie and a copy of a government-issued identification.

    This is a part of the verification process that will be handled by an Israeli company AU10TIX software which will store the provided information for up to 30 days.

    According to X, data collected from a user’s profile will be used “for the purpose of safety and security, including preventing impersonation”.

    X users have expressed their concerns with data collection due to previous instances of data breach. Others are unhappy about the software’s links with Israeli intelligence.

    Al-Jazeera reports that AU10TIX has helped create the identity verification systems for airports and border controls in the 1980s and 90s and then ventured into “digital spaces” in 2002 as the internet grew. The company now deals with renowned digital platforms like Uber, PayPal and Google.

    The purpose of the new verification process is to further strengthen security against impersonation and fraud.

    Previously, Musk imposed a subscription fee on verified Twitter users in November 2022. This was extended to accounts with a verified phone number and active subscription to an “eligible Twitter Blue plan”.

    This year, in April, Twitter removed legacy verification programmes as well as legacy verified checkmarks.
    This prompted a fear of impersonation and spreading of information.

    This was followed by gold and grey check marks indicating verified organization and government- affiliated accounts, respectively.

    Starting the week on a high note, gold prices in Pakistan increased due to the Pakistani rupee’s decline against the US dollar and a rise in global rates. 

    Recent data from the All-Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association (APSGJA) shows that the price of 24-carat gold increased by Rs3,100 per tola, reaching Rs229,900, and by Rs2,658 per 10 grammes, reaching Rs197,102.

    Likewise, the price of gold in the international market saw a modest $2 increase, reaching $1,891 per ounce today. 

    Over the last six sessions, the local market experienced a substantial rise of Rs8,100 per tola in gold prices.

    According to the association’s data, the price of silver remained steady at Rs2,800 per tola and Rs2,400.54 per 10 grammes.

    The PKR continued its decline against the US dollar on Monday. The local currency went down by 0.45 per cent, which is about Rs1.35, and closed the day at Rs297.13 in the interbank market, as reported by the State Bank of Pakistan.

    Gold prices in the Pakistani market are consistently rising due to the depreciation of the local unit. Analysts suggest that despite the decline in global prices, local prices remain stable owing to the strengthening US dollar.

    In the event that the PKR continues to depreciate and global prices remain subdued, local gold prices are likely to hold steady. On the contrary, if global prices surge and the Pakistani currency remains weak, gold prices in the country might witness further escalation.

    Pakistan’s women’s football team is set to participate in a six-nation tournament hosted by Saudi Arabia from September 18 to 30, as confirmed by the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF). The tournament will include teams from Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Laos, Malaysia, and Bhutan. The PFF will soon announce a training camp to prepare the women’s squad for the upcoming event.

    The PFF released a statement mentioning that the Pakistan women’s football team will be part of the six-nation tournament taking place in Saudi Arabia from September 18 to 30.

    In January of this year, Pakistan traveled to Saudi Arabia for a four-nation tournament, competing against Comoros and Mauritius. The team achieved victory against Comoros but lost to Mauritius 2-1. They concluded the tournament on a strong note by drawing 1-1 against Saudi Arabia, which ultimately won the tournament.

    According to Arab News, one of the recent accomplishments of the Pakistani women’s football team was a significant 7-0 triumph over the Maldives in the South Asian Football Federation championship in September 2022. In April of the same year, Pakistan achieved an impressive 1-0 victory over Tajikistan in the qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

    This win marked Pakistan’s first major tournament victory since resuming regular international football in September 2022, following a lengthy break. Previously, the team had secured victories mainly in friendly matches or exhibition tournaments such as the Four-Nation Cup in Saudi Arabia.

    Arif Alvi dismisses Secretary to President as bills mystery deepens

    Hours after the President said that he does not need Waqar Ahmed’s services, the Secretary has said in a statement on Monday that Dr. Arif Alvi did not sign the Official Secrets (Amendment) Bill, 2023, or the Pakistan Army (Amendment) Bill, 2023, nor did he make a written decision to send them back to parliament for further consideration.

    On Monday, the official X (formerly Twitter) account of @PresOfPakistan stated: “In view of the definite statement of yesterday, President’s Secretariat has written a letter to Principal Secretary to Prime Minister that the services of Mr. Waqar Ahmed, Secretary to President, are no more required and are surrendered to the Establishment Division, immediately”.

    President Arif Alvi caused a sensation on Sunday when he said in a tweet from his personal account that he did not sign the official secrets (Amendment) Bill, 2023, or the Pakistan Army (Amendment) Bill, 2023, as he does not agree with the laws. He said that despite his orders to return the bills to parliament, his staff disobeyed him.
    “I confirmed from them many times that whether they have been returned & was assured that they were,” Alvi wrote about the bills in a tweet, adding that he just found out that his staff “undermined my will and command”.
    He also asked for forgiveness from those who are affected by the bills.

    The tweets came about after news broke that he had signed the Official Secrets (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the Army Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023. Now both bills are part of the law.
    On the other hand, former Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani has said that “the tweet of President Arif Alvi was inappropriate”.
    Raza Rabbani pointed out that if an inquiry is initiated, the president will have to appear before a committee of the upper house since he is a part of the parliament under Article 50 of the Constitution.
    “As per Article 75 of the Constitution, when a bill is sent for assent, the president has two options: either give assent, or refer the matter to the parliament with specific observations. Article 75 does not provide for any third option,” he stressed.
    The ministry has said neither of the requirements was fulfilled. Instead, the president purposely delayed the assent, it added. Returning the bills without any observations or assent is not provided for in the Constitution, the spokesperson said, adding that such a course of action is against the letter and spirit of the Constitution.
    “If the president had any observations, he could have returned the bills with his observations like he did in the recent and distant past. He could have also issued a press release to that effect,” the law ministry said.

    Meta is getting ready to launch the web version of Threads, which is its rival to X (previously known as Twitter). This launch is expected to happen early this week, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. Threads, which offers short-form posts, has been missing a web version since its start.

    Mark Zuckerberg, who is the CEO of Meta, mentioned that they’re working on adding this feature along with a better search function. Right now, the search function is quite limited; you can only search for usernames. These changes are expected to be ready in a few weeks.

    However, The Wall Street Journal’s sources say that the exact launch plans are not set in stone and could change. Adam Mosseri, who posted on Threads, shared that they’ve been testing an early version internally for a short time. But before it’s released widely, some more work is needed.

    Threads started as a basic version similar to Twitter just about a month and a half ago. Surprisingly, it quickly gained over 100 million users and attracted celebrities and brands. However, it has been missing some important features. The company has been slowly adding improvements, like a follow feed and the ability to verify a link using a Mastodon profile. This suggests that Meta might be considering integrating with the decentralised social network protocol Activity Pub.

    World Cup 2023: Pakistan matches may be rescheduled again

    The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) has asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to change the schedule of two matches for the upcoming 2023 ICC World Cup in India. After security concerns were raised by local police, Indian media reported on Sunday.

    According to Indian media reports, Hyderabad police have sounded the security alarm for consecutive games, including the match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka on October 10 at Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium.

    The Pakistan-Sri Lanka match was originally scheduled to take place on October 12. But the date was later changed to give Pakistan enough time between games after their match against India on October 14.

    Earlier this month, nine matches in the World Cup had been postponed. But the HCA has reportedly not been consulted on the matter as they were forced to submit a request to change the schedule.

    Hyderabad police informed HCA that they won’t be able to make security arrangements for back-to-back matches. Further security will be needed for the Pakistan and India match especially.

    The match between Pakistan and India was originally scheduled for October 15. But it was rescheduled for October 14 due to the Indian festival Navratri.


    World Cup will start from October 5, continuing till November 19. In which a total of 10 teams competing for the title of Champions. World Cup will be played at a total of 10 different venues.

    However, BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla shut down the request of Reschedule.

    There will be no other changes to how the World Cup is played, as it requires the participation of multiple stakeholders.

    Hindustan Times reported that Rajeev Shukla said “I can’t say for sure that will change, but back-to-back games are not ideal. I mean, it would be great if they (BCCI) reconsider”.

    The Pakistani rupee (PKR) continued its decline against the US dollar on the first working day of the week. PKR went down by 0.45 per cent, which is about Rs1.35, and closed the day at Rs297.13 in the interbank market, as reported by the State Bank of Pakistan.

    This shows that over the past five trading sessions, the Pakistani rupee has lost a total of Rs8.64. It’s important to note that on the previous Friday, the rupee had closed at Rs295.78 after losing 0.86 paisas, which is about 0.29 per cent.

    Looking at last week, from Tuesday to Friday, the Pakistani rupee experienced a significant loss of Rs7.29. This indicates a period of notable fluctuation for the rupee in the foreign exchange market.
