Inventory shortage forces Pak Suzuki to temporarily halt operations

Pak Suzuki Motor Company (PSMC) announced on Wednesday that it will temporarily halt operations at its automobile plant from February 13th to 17th, due to an insufficient inventory.

The management of Pak Suzuki, the local assembler, manufacturer, and marketer of Suzuki vehicles and related spare parts, has informed the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) that it will temporarily cease operations at its automobile plant from February 13th to 17th, 2023, due to an ongoing shortage of inventory.

The company’s motorcycle plant, however, will remain in operation. This decision follows a previous temporary shutdown of the automobile plant from January 2nd to 6th and January 16th to 20th, also due to inventory constraints.

PSMC has reported that the recent introduction of a prior approval mechanism for imports by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has negatively impacted the clearance of its import consignments, leading to a shortage of inventory.

As a result, PSMC has suspended new bookings for its motorcycles starting January 20th, due to supply chain constraints and an uncertain production outlook. The company has stated that bookings will resume when the situation improves and it is able to serve fresh customers.

Pakistan’s auto industry, which heavily relies on imports, is facing a crisis as the SBP has imposed restrictions on the opening of Letters of Credit (LCs) due to the persistent depreciation of the rupee. The country’s depleted reserves have resulted in operational challenges for various industries.

  • Court suspends National Assembly Speaker’s order to accept PTI MNAs’ resignations

Court suspends National Assembly Speaker’s order to accept PTI MNAs’ resignations

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday suspended National Assembly (NA) Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf’s order accepting the resignations of 43 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers last month, putting by-elections in these constituencies on hold.

During the hearing today, PTI lawyer Ali Zafar contended that PTI MNAs had withdrawn their resignation before the NA speaker had accepted them.

The former ruling party had filed a petition stating that PTI lawmakers had requested the speaker not to de-notify them, as they had withdrawn resignations but the speaker still went ahead and accepted their resignations “without following due process”.

Pervez Ashraf ‘approves’ resignations of 43 more PTI MNAs

Earlier, Ashraf approved the resignations of 43 lawmakers in the lower house.

Reacting to the development, senior PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said the main reason to return to the assembly in small numbers was to remove Raja Riaz as the opposition leader because the legislature had “no importance”.

“Right now, Shehbaz Sharif has lost the support of 172 members and is relying on lotas (turncoats) to save his government,” tweeted Fawad.

He also pointed out that 40 per cent of seats in the NA were now empty. “The only solution to this crisis is elections.”

NA speaker accepts resignations of 35 more PTI lawmakers

Ashraf on Friday, January 20, accepted the resignations of 35 more PTI Members of Provincial Assembly (MNAs), days after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) de-notified 34 PTI MNAs after their resignations were accepted by Ashraf.

PTI lawmakers had resigned en masse from the lower house of parliament following the ouster of PTI chief Imran Khan in April last year through a Vote of No Confidence.

A total of 69 resignations were accepted this week after the PTI announced to return to the assembly and threatened to move a no-trust motion against the incumbent Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif.

According to reports, President Arif Alvi had been all set to ask PM Shehbaz Sharif to take a vote of confidence from the lower house of the parliament.

Raja Pervez Ashraf had previously accepted the resignations of only 11 MNAs in July last year.

After ECP de-notified 35 PTI MNAs, the party’s senior leader Fawad Chaudhry announced that party Chairman Imran Khan himself will contest on all 33 National Assembly constituencies.

This is not the first time that such an announcement has been made.

Last year, in October, Khan announced that he would contest on seven seats of the national assembly. At the time, he lost from only one seat and won the remaining six.

‘Naked fascism’: Khan condemns repeated police raids on Pervaiz Elahi’s home

Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, has condemned continuous police raids at former Chief Minister Perviaz Elahi’s home.

“Strongly condemn the repeated police raids on Pervez Elahi’s home in Gujrat as well as arbitrary arrests & abductions of his supporters & those who worked with him.”

“This is naked fascism on the part of Imported Govt & their Handlers, simply to spread fear in all who support us,” added Khan.

“Just to remind, arrests of & actions ag Sharifs & others during our govt, were a result of NAB cases with over 95% filed before we were voted into power & of the int Panama revelations. While in custody they were given VIP treatment. But what they wanted was NRO which we refused,” tweeted Khan.

‘Bhatti may be subject to forcible disappearance’: Pervaiz Elahi concerned about Secretary’s arrest

Punjab Assembly Secretary Muhammad Khan Bhatti was arrested in Sindh on Monday.

According to news reports, his house in Gujranwala was also raided by police, and a domestic employee was arrested on the same day.

The news report stated that Bhatti was wanted by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in different cases.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi expressed fears that Bhatti may be subject to forcible disappearance.

In a statement Elahi said, “The way our legal advisor Amir Saeed Ran remains missing, he too may be subject to disappearance.”

“What kind of message is being sent if officers from Punjab start disappearing from Sindh?” he asked.

Meanwhile, Moonis Elahi tweeted, “Police , FIA and others again at Kunjah House . They keep raiding without warrant. By raiding our house you think you will make us leave @ImranKhanPTI . Think again!!”

  • ‘Kuch Ankahi’ is the fresh breath of air the entertainment industry needed

‘Kuch Ankahi’ is the fresh breath of air the entertainment industry needed

It isn’t an easy task to find authentic representation of women’s stories in Pakistani dramas. Limited creative freedom to explore sensitive social issues and a refusal by most script writers to recognize that making stories interesting with misogynist tropes won’t work is to blame. But Kuch Ankahi is a wonderful welcome for audiences craving good story telling. A slice of life centered around a family in Karachi where three sisters navigate their way through body shaming, pressure to marry, career ambitions and supporting each other thick and thin. There are multiple reasons why you should include this drama in your to-watch list right away!

1 The similarity to the golden age of PTV dramas

Many users have praised the show’s use of warm tones and feminist narratives that reflect some of the 80s and 90s classics on PTV like Tanhaiyaan, Dhoop Kinaray and Ankahi, which were written by Haseena Moin and featured strong women with incredible stories.

    2. Rejecting traditional masculinity

Unlike how recent Pakistani dramas have championed toxic masculinity by romanticizing abusive relationships and toxic men, Kuch Ankahi depicts a world where men and women can exist in harmony. Men are shown doing basic chores, developing close friendships with women and even motivating them to pursue their dreams without adding a romantic element to it, because yes men and women can be platonic friends. The most wholesome example of this has to be the father Agha Jee, who is more than a best friend to his daughters and is quick to remind any man that his daughters are stronger than him.

    3. The subtle, yet powerful way the drama champions original storytelling

In an industry where the popularity of a drama depends on following a repeated formulae, and consistently re-using misogynist tropes like the virgin and the whore, the gold digger, or the shallow man-hating feminist, Kuch Ankahi has carved its own space by encouraging audiences, especially the entertainment industry, to respect original story telling, and stop shutting out marginalized voices who deserve platforms for representation. A powerful scene that had circulated widely on social media showed a poster of the film Joyland hanging on a wall. Joyland was censored and widely criticized among conservative critics for featuring a relationship between a transgender woman and a man, but in this moment the drama sent out a solidarity note to storytellers in Pakistan who wanted to bring different perspectives to the screen but were denied the right to do so.

4 Tackling social issues like body shaming, marriage pressure or women’s access to social media

In the past shows like Dil Na Umeed To Nahi were sent notices by PEMRA for changing their content material, as the show tackled the lives of child sex workers and human trafficking. Kuch Ankahi refuses to back away from highlighting the pressures and stigma women face and executes them in a gentle but brilliant manner. Take for instance Parmeesh, the daughter of the Hindu woman Meena, who loves making videos on Tik Tok but is barred from using a mobile phone after her mother discovers her videos. Or Saima, the eldest daughter, who is consistently pressurized by her mother to marry Saif-ur-Rehman.

5 Side characters aren’t just props, but are fleshed out with their own storyline

Pakistani dramas usually categorize characters as either black or white, and keep characters other than the main leads to the background. In Kuch Ankahi, each character is fleshed out with their own background and original purpose, rather than becoming just another prop to the main character’s journey. An interesting example of this could be Saif-ul-Rehman, the man Saima is suppose to marry. Like a lot of sons, he is being forced by his mother to marry of her choice when he actually wishes to marry someone else.

Kuch Ankahi airs every Saturday on 8 pm on ARY digital.

  • 1,300 workers to lose jobs as Zoom adapts to global economic uncertainty

1,300 workers to lose jobs as Zoom adapts to global economic uncertainty

Zoom Video Communications, the company behind the widely-used video conferencing platform, announced plans to lay off approximately 15 per cent of its workforce on Tuesday.

In a blog post, CEO Eric Yuan disclosed that he will be taking a 98 per cent reduction in salary and forgoing his executive bonus this year. Members of the executive leadership team will also receive a 20 per cent reduction in salary and forfeit their bonuses.

Despite continued reliance on Zoom as the world adjusts to post-pandemic life, the company is facing reduced spending from customers, as stated by Yuan. This has led to the difficult decision to lay off around 1,300 employees.

Owing to the challenges posed by the pandemic, Yuan expressed pride in the company’s ability to keep people connected and noted that the company’s employee count tripled during the pandemic due to the platform’s widespread use for remote work, court hearings, and social events.

“We are seeing that people and businesses continue to rely on Zoom,” Yuan said.

“But the uncertainty of the global economy, and its effect on our customers, means we need to take a hard look inward to reset ourselves so we can weather the economic environment, deliver for our customers and achieve Zoom’s long-term vision.” Zoom will continue to invest in strategic areas, the chief executive noted.

Zoom has joined the trend of US tech companies reducing their workforce amid global economic challenges and a shift towards cost-saving measures.

American computer company, Dell, announced plans to lay off around 5 per cent of its global workforce, or approximately 6,650 employees. These job cuts follow similar moves made by tech industry giants such as Microsoft, Facebook, Alphabet (Google’s parent company), Amazon, and Twitter as the industry prepares for economic uncertainty.

The cuts come after a period of significant hiring during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, when companies were attempting to meet the increased demand for online work, education, and entertainment. According to the job loss tracking site, Layoffs.fyi, over 95,000 tech employees have lost their jobs since the start of the year.

The military’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), has confirmed that security forces have killed 12 terrorists of the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) during an intelligence-based operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s (KP) Lakki Marwat area.

“Terrorists were lured in by providing a vehicle for escape that was intercepted and neutralised,” said the ISPR, adding that weapons, ammunition and Afghan currency were also recovered from the terrorists.

“Locals appreciated the operation and lauded the efforts of Pakistan Army in eliminating terrorism,” the statement concluded.

Later, a clearance operation was carried out in the area.

The country is facing rising insurgency, especially in Balochistan and KP, after the outlawed TTP ended its ceasefire with Islamabad in November.

Nawaz Sharif was taken out of power unconstitutionally, says Qureshi

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi has acknowledged that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supreme leader Nawaz Sharif was removed from power unconstitutionally.

Speaking with journalist Meher Bokhari, Qureshi said that PTI believed that Sharif would have learned from what happened to him and would not have repeated the same thing.

“These experiments have not worked in the last 75 years. We were expecting that what he [Nawaz Sharif] went through as a leader, he would have learned from it and taken up a new attitude in politics,” said Qureshi.

“If someone is removed unconstitutionally from power, a democratic mind will not accept it,” added Qureshi.

It is pertinent to mention here, that PTI Chairman Imran Khan was removed as the prime minister in April, 2022 through a vote of no-confidence.

  • Pakistan has enough petrol for 20 days: Musadik Malik refutes fuel shortage rumours

Pakistan has enough petrol for 20 days: Musadik Malik refutes fuel shortage rumours

On Tuesday, many petrol stations in the cities of Punjab were closed, causing inconvenience for commuters searching for fuel. However, State Minister for Petroleum, Musadik Malik, refuted reports of a nationwide fuel shortage.

Despite a recent increase of Rs35 per litre in petrol and diesel prices, consumers are still facing difficulties due to limited supply.

This situation mirrors a similar occurrence earlier this month prior to the price hike. On January 29, the government raised the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs35 per litre in response to the significant devaluation of the rupee against the dollar.

The devaluation of the local currency against the dollar reached historic lows after the unofficial cap on the greenback was removed. Consumers in cities such as Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Shakargarh, Khushab, Mandi Bahauddin, and Gojra have encountered difficulties obtaining fuel. Petrol stations that remained operational have experienced long lines of vehicles, with reports of owners rationing the commodity by only providing limited amounts to customers.

According to Geo, the State Minister for Petroleum has issued a warning against hoarding, as the fuel supply is already precarious. The minister stated that hoarders should be prepared for the possibility of having their licenses revoked.

He said that there is a 20-day supply of petrol and a 25-day supply of diesel in the country. He urged the public to report any petrol stations that may be restricting supply for profit.

Malik emphasized that there is no shortage of petrol in the country and confirmed that there will be no increase in the prices of petroleum products before February 15.
