  • Twitter bird statue sells for $100,000 as Musk auctions off old office mementos

Twitter bird statue sells for $100,000 as Musk auctions off old office mementos

A Twitter bird statue fetched $100,000 on Wednesday as owner Elon Musk auctioned off furniture, decorations, kitchen equipment, and more from the tech firm’s San Francisco headquarters.

A 10-foot neon light in the form of Twitter’s bird logo was included in an online auction of “surplus corporate office assets of Twitter” that lasted just over 24 hours and received a winning price of $40,000, the Heritage Global Partners auction service reported.

Espresso machines, ergonomically sound desks, televisions, bicycle-powered charging stations, pizza ovens, and a colourful planter in the form of a “@” sign were some of the 631 lots.

As he set out to hire a new CEO for his struggling social media network, Musk claimed in December that drastic cost cutbacks at Twitter had fixed the company’s poor financial situation.

At the time, the erratic billionaire claimed in a live chat room that Twitter would have lost $3 billion annually without the reforms, which included sacking more than half of its staff.

At the platform he paid $44 billion for, Musk claimed to have been “reducing expenses like crazy.”

Shortly after taking over Twitter, Musk let go roughly half of its 7,500 employees, raising concerns that the firm lacked the manpower to handle content moderation and alarmed regulators, advertisers, and governments.

According to Musk, his strategy is to drastically cut expenses while increasing revenue and a new $8 monthly membership service dubbed Twitter Blue will aid in achieving this objective.

Mass layoffs, the reinstatement of blocked accounts, and the suspension of journalists who criticise the wealthy South African-born Elon Musk have all contributed to the instability that has gripped Musk’s Twitter.

Racist or offensive tweets also increased after Musk’s takeover, which attracted regulatory attention and drove away major advertisers, Twitter’s primary source of income.

Randon, who took the name of Sister Andre when she became a nun in 1944, died in her sleep on January 17 at the nursing home where she lived.

According to BBC, Randon was born on February 11, 1904, and was the world’s oldest living person according to the Gerontology Research Group’s (GRG) World Supercentenarian Rankings List.

Long recognised as the oldest person in Europe, she became the world’s oldest following the death of Japan’s Kane Tanaka at 119 in 2022. Guinness World Records officially acknowledged her status.

“There is great sadness but … it was her desire to join her beloved brother. For her, it’s a liberation,” spokesperson David Tavella, of the Sainte-Catherine-Laboure nursing home in the southern French town of Toulon, told the AFP news agency.

Randon was born in the year New York opened its first subway, and World War I was still a decade away.

“It was rare, in families, there were usually two dead rather than two alive. They both came back,” she said.

ECP to notify Khan’s win on 7 NA seats

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday decided to confirm Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chief Imran Khan’s victory in seven constituencies of the National Assembly (NA) in by-elections held on October 16, 2022.

A three-member bench of the Election Commission, headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikander Sultan Raja, announced the verdict which had been reserved in December.

The ECP had taken notice of the PTI chief’s failure to submit details of election expenses within the stipulated time.

In its verdict announced today, the electoral body said that it ignored the delay in the submission of the details of the expenses and directed officials to notify Khan as the winning candidate, accepting the PTI plea.

According to election laws, “Every returned candidate shall, within five days from the date of the election, submit return of election expenses in accordance with the provision of section 29.”

“On receipt of the returns of the election under sub-section (3) of section 24, the Commission shall publish in the official Gazette the names of the returned candidates: Provided that the name of a candidate shall not be published who fails to submit the return of election expenses as required by sub-section (3) of section 24.”

The by-polls were conducted on nine NA seats that fell vacant after the National Assembly speaker accepted the resignations of PTI MNAs, who had tendered resignations en masse as per party policy.

According to the by-election results, Khan won the NA seats from Mardan, Charsadda and Peshawar in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Faisalabad and Nankana Sahib in Punjab and the Korangi district of Karachi in Sindh.

PML-Q wants seats from PTI to merge into the party

Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Pervaiz Elahi has put forward a set of conditions to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) if they want a merger with his party, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q).

The chief minister has asked for seat adjustments in Gujrat, Chakwal, and Gujranwala divisions from PTI in the next general elections which are likely to take place within the year.

Samaa has reported that Elahi has even asked for a written agreement of the deal from PTI chief Imran Khan.

Elahi has categorically stated that without any significant political benefit, the PML-Q will not unite with the PTI.

However, senior leaders of PTI have opposed Elahi’s demands for half of the seats in the aforementioned divisions.

Earlier, Khan had proposed that PML-Q should merge with it as the Elahis showed immense support to him in the Punjab Assembly dissolution process.

After this, PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain suspended Elahi’s party membership, making it difficult for Elahi to merge his party with PTI.

Subsequently, Elahi clarified that no final decision has been taken yet on a merger, saying that consultations are still underway.

  • Hollywood remake of ‘Crash Landing On You’ might have sci fi re-touch

Hollywood remake of ‘Crash Landing On You’ might have sci fi re-touch

The popular Korean drama ‘Crash Landing On You’ is reportedly getting a re-make in Hollywood, with a strong possibility that it will have sci-fi influences.
The idea originated from the New Yorker profile of Netflix’s Global Head of Television Bela Bajaria, where he and the streaming service’s head of drama development, Jim Howe, discuss how they might remake the hit K-drama as it was specifically about North and South Korea.

“So, I think we’re gonna see if maybe we can make that divide a little bit more symbolic. We’re looking into sci-fi,” Howe replied.

“Well, you need a world, right?” Bajaria responded. “Because it is the culture clash of two people who don’t fit together but were meant for each other.”

‘Crash Landing On You’ stars Son Ye-Jin as a South Korean heiress and business woman who accidently lands in North Korean part of the demilitarized zone after paragliding. She meets Captain Ri Jeong-hyeok (played by Hyun Bin) who agrees to hide her in his home and pretend they are fiancees. The two begin to fall in love with each other.

  • ‘Arresting Imran Khan will only strengthen PTI’, warns Asad Qaiser

‘Arresting Imran Khan will only strengthen PTI’, warns Asad Qaiser

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Qaiser has warned that if former Prime Minister Imran Khan is arrested then it would make the party more powerful.

Asad Qaiser also said that the government could detain party chief Imran Khan in the run-up to general elections. Stating that the incumbent government is “panicking”, Asad Qaiser said that the rulers can go to any length to stop Imran Khan. However, he reiterated that PTI doesn’t care about such matters.

“This [Imran’s arrest] would only end up strengthening the PTI,” he said.

Responding to National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf’s decision to accept the resignations of 34 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNAs, the former Speaker called the action a “great injustice” to his office.

Qaiser said, “You should take the law and the Constitution into account while making decisions when you hold a constitutional position. Therefore, instead of granting the wishes of political figures, you must act in accordance with the law,” he remarked.
