Sherry Rehman makes it to list of 25 most influential women of 2022

Federal Minister for Climate Change, Sherry Rehman, has been included in the Financial Times list of ’25 most influential women of 2022′.

The first minister of Scotland- Nicola Ferguson Sturgeon—one of the article’s writers—termed Sherry Rehman a “negotiator with grit”.

Describing the climate minister, Ferguson said, “Rehman’s negotiating skills, her pragmatism in navigating the blocks that developed countries put in her way and her campaigning voice were instrumental in the progress on loss and damage at COP27.”

According to her, at the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP27, Sherry Rehman gave a powerful account of the devastating floods in Pakistan

“I have no doubt that Sherry will continue in her campaign for climate justice, for global financial reform and for the vital funds required to secure a future for those parts of Pakistan that will suffer the impact of this year’s floods for a long time to come”, the Scotland minister added.

Apart from Sherry, the list also includes the women of Iran who “have been denied for too long: dignity, personal bodily autonomy, the freedom to live safely in their own country”. Women in Iran are protesting since September when a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, was snatched off the street by the “morality police” for allegedly failing to wear the hijab correctly. She died in police custody.

Tennis player Serena Williams, the world’s youngest elected leader Prime Minister (PM) of Finland Sanna Marin, United States (US) Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and others are also on the list.

Why are Iranians celebrating their team’s defeat against the US in FIFA World Cup?

Many Iranians celebrated their country’s defeat in the Fifa World Cup against the US on November 30. The celebrations have left a lot of people perplexed. The reason behind the merrymaking dates back to September.

Iran has been rocked by protests since more than two months, after the custodial death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by the country’s morality police for allegedly violating the Islamic dress code. The people of Iran have refused to support the national football team, as they think the team represents the government.

A man has been also reported to have been killed in Iran by security forces in northern Iran.

Mehran Samak, 27, was shot dead after honking his car horn in Bandar Anzali, a city on the Caspian Sea coast, north-west of Tehran.
According to the Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights (IHR) Samak “was targeted directly and shot in the head by security forces … following the defeat of the national team against America.”

Videos shared on Twitter show Iranians dancing on the streets in a rare display of joy after the videos of burning tires and protesting crowds that have emerged from the country in recent months. But the dancing and celebratory honking was also a show of protest as they denounced the football team’s participation in the World Cup at such a tumultuous time.

TTP terror activities should be concerning for Afghan Taliban says Rana Sanaullah

Interior Minister Rana Sanullah has said that the involvement of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan’s (TTP) militants in terror activities inside Pakistan should be a matter of concern for the Afghan Taliban as it is dangerous for regional peace.

Addressing a press conference, Rana Sanaullah said that the rise in terror activities is alarming but the situation is not out of control.

“TTP is enjoying all sorts of facilities in Afghanistan,” the minister said, a day after the banned outfit claimed an attack in Quetta in which a policeman, a woman, and two children were killed, while 26 people, including 23 cops and two children, were injured. Sanaullah has also asked the provincial governments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan to address terrorism before the federal government takes the matter in its hands.

Police have said that a truck of Frontier Constabulary (FC) was targeted in the Quetta explosion. Injured cops and civilians were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Emergency responders and police rushed to the scene to provide rescue assistance. Police confirmed that 16 members of Balochistan constabulary also suffered multiple injuries.

  • Russia refuses to give Pakistan 30–40% discount on crude oil

Russia refuses to give Pakistan 30–40% discount on crude oil

It appears that talks with Russia came to an end without any conclusion since Moscow has refused to offer Pakistan a 30–40 per cent discount on crude oil, claiming that all volumes were committed.

During the negotiations, the Pakistani group, which included State Minister for Petroleum Musadik Malik, the joint secretary, and representatives of the Pakistani Embassy in Moscow, sought a reduction.

However, Russia has pledged to take Pakistan’s request into consideration and to later communicate its opinion through diplomatic channels.

Nevertheless, according to sources, Russia can provide oil at the rates it is currently offering to its major client countries, which are stable and solid economies, at an appropriate time. All quantities are currently contracted with significant purchasers, they claimed.

The Russian side urged Pakistan to start by keeping its word over the Pakistan Stream Gas Pipeline, which will be built from Karachi to Lahore, Punjab.

During the negotiations, the Pakistani side expressed a desire to alter the PSGP project’s model. The Russian side claimed that only a few provisions of the shareholding agreement needed to be finalised and that the model of the project under the GtG arrangement had already been established.

According to Geo, the official delegation from Pakistan travelled to Moscow on November 29 for a three-day meeting with Russian officials to discuss the possibility of importing crude oil at a reduced price, as well as the mode of payment and shipping costs.

Russian crude oil may be processed in Pakistan’s refineries, and one private refinery has previously used Russian crude oil to provide completed goods, according to sources in the industry ministry.

  • LHC sends notification to Punjab Govt to submit reply on ‘Joyland’ ban

In response to a petition challenging a ban on the screening of the movie Joyland in the province, the Lahore High Court on Wednesday sent notices to the Punjab government and the film censor board.

The petition was filed by the Distribution Club (Pvt.) Limited and film’s co-producer Sana Zahra while advocate Usama Khawar is representing the petition.

Khawar claimed that both the national and provincial film censor boards had initially given the movie the go-ahead for nationwide release in Pakistan in August 2022.

He said that the challenged prohibition order was a prime example of a non-speaking order because the respondent provincial government did not apply any thought or reasoning to it, and no justifications were given.

Justice Muzamil Akhtar Shabbir heard the arguments made by the attorney before sending notifications to the respondent requesting that they submit their responses by December 13.
