    After electricity, telecom companies warn of phone call loadshedding

    Following a massive tax hike, telecom companies in Pakistan have warned the public of initiating ‘loadshedding’ of phone calls, similar to power cuts, across the country.

    Telecommunication officials informed senators during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance that, like electricity, load-shedding of phone calls would be observed in the coming days, according to ARY News.

    During the meeting, telecom company representatives stated that the federal government has enhanced the advance tax on imported fibre optic cable by 15 per cent while boosting duty by 20 per cent.

    The senators were informed that the companies are experiencing severe financial difficulties as a result of the enhanced financial strain of importing fiber-optic.

    Telecom company representatives claimed that fibre optic cable is only used in 10 per cent of towers across the country, and that unless the government lowers fibre optic cable taxes, Pakistan will fall behind in the global connectivity race.

    After hearing the telecom companies’ arguments, the Senate committee recommended that the federal government reduce relevant taxes on fibre optic imports.

    KP govt considering buying a plane to put out wildfires

    The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government is reportedly considering buying a plane to timely deal with wildfire emergencies.

    In a statement, KP Secretary Forestation said that the government is considering purchasing a plane to put out forest fires in the province.

    The statement further added that developed countries typically deploy planes to put out such fires, as it helps in controlling the fire in lesser time.

    According to a recently published report that was compiled by the provincial Forestry, Environment and Wildlife Department, over 200 wildfires damaged forests and pastures over an area of 14,430 acres in various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in a span of two weeks.

    The data was collected from March 23 to June 9.

    As per the data given to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly by the Forestry Department last year, fires destroyed around 815 acres of land in 2020.

    Sikh Gurdwara in Kabul attacked, Daesh claims responsibility

    The Islamic State (IS), also known as Daesh, has claimed responsibility for an attack on a Sikh Gurdwara in Kabul that killed at least two people and injured seven on Saturday (June 18). Reuters reported that on an affiliated Telegram channel, the local branch of Daesh said the attack was in response to the derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) by BJP spokespersons in India.

    The attack on Karteparwan Gurdwara killed one Sikh worshipper and a Taliban fighter. A Taliban interior ministry spokesman told Reuters that the attackers had laden a car with explosives but it had detonated before reaching its target.

    Karteparwan Gurdwara was the only operational Sikh temple in Kabul of the four Gurudwaras in the Afghan capital. This is not the first attack by Daesh on a Gurdwara. In 2020, the militant group attacked a 400-year-old Gurudwara in Kabul, which left 25 dead.

    There has been a rise in attacks on religious minorities in Afghanistan. Most of these attacks have been claimed by the Islamic State Khorasan Province, ISKP (ISIS-K), the regional branch of ISIL/Daesh.

    DG Khan Cement to export 50,000 tonnes of cement to the United States

    Following long and complex certification processes, D.G. Khan Cement Company Limited (DGKCL), one of Pakistan’s largest cement producers, is set to export 50,000 tonnes of the building material to the sophisticated US market.

    This is a positive development for Pakistan, which is struggling to boost exports in the face of a burgeoning trade deficit that has steered the rupee to historic depths. The process took almost ten months for the renowned industrial group to complete the necessary certifications for delivering cement to US markets after winning the contract. TXDOT, LDOT, NCDOT, and SCDOT are among the certifications available.

    According to Brecorder, the company’s CFO, Inayat Ullah Niazi, stated that a ship was currently loading cement at a port in Karachi for delivery to Houston.

    It was not easy for the company to meet the contract for a monthly supply of 100,000 tonnes of cement to Texas. In August of last year, DG Khan Cement signed a contract with a US company for the year 2021.

    Since the United States lacks cement production, it imports it from Mexico, Canada, and Turkey.

    Finally. a Pakistani cement supplier has entered the US market for the first time, as demand for the construction material has risen dramatically, with buyers looking for other options in the wake of President Joe Biden’s $6 trillion infrastructure package.

    All of the mega infrastructure in the United States, including roads, bridges, and other structures, would be rebuilt as they were nearly a century ago under the announced package.

    Pakistan exported 4.971 million tonnes cement in the first 11 months of the current fiscal year (July-May), a negative growth of 43.32 per cent, according to export data. Cement exports to Afghanistan were only 813,493 tonnes during this time, a negative 65.04 per cent increase.

    With only 1.478 million tonnes exported, exports to other countries experienced negative growth of 27.2 per cent.

    As per industry insiders, after DG Khan Cement began discovering the US market for cement exports, other larger players began the certification process for their goods.

    According to the latest figures released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the country’s exports declined by 10.22 per cent on a monthly basis in May 2022, falling to $2.6 billion from $2.897 billion in April 2022.

    D.G. Khan Cement, one of Pakistan’s largest cement producers, earned Rs4.1 billion in the nine-month period ending March 31, 2022, a 26 per cent increase in profit. In the same period of 2020-21, the company made Rs3.25 billion in profits.

    It is worth noting that the business also received orders for cement export to the Philippines back in 2020.

    With a nearly 50 per cent (Rs300 per bag) increase in the last 12 months, more price increases would be required to offset the coal cost impact.

    What is Snapchat Plus?

    With Snapchat Plus, Liz Markman (Snapchat Spokesperson) reports, subscribers will have access to certain features of the app.

    “You’ll be able to pin friends as best friends, get custom snap chat icons and subscriber profile badges, and see how many retweets you have on Snap Stories”. He also notes that “you will be able to see your friends’ location in the last 24 hours, but only if they share it with you”.

    Why paid when they can offer free?

    This is not the only social media platform to launch a paid subscription model. Other social media platforms are also running the same race. For example, Twitter launched its first subscription offer, Twitter Blue, in June, which is currently available in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

    The transition to a subscription-based business model may be the result of app tracking transparency, a feature introduced by Apple in iOS 14 that requires apps to ask users before they can track their data. Companies such as Snap and Meta have publicly stated that Apple’s new guidelines have affected their revenue, which is largely based on advertising.

    By introducing new subscription plans, these companies hope to offset the loss in advertising revenue by charging for access to special features that will not be available to free users.

    How much does Snapchat Plus cost?

    The service costs € 4.59 (Rs1,009) monthly or € 45.99 (Rs10,111) per year.

    It is not clear when Snapchat Plus will launch as it is still in testing mode, but keep an eye out for it. Will you pay for it?

    Responding to Energy Minister Khurram Dastgir’s revelations why Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif-led government came into power, senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Umar said that he is waiting for a statement by Director General (DG) Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in response to such serious allegations.

    “Dastagir has alleged that in November when a new army chief would have been appointed by Imran Khan, the new chief would have violated the Constitution and would have helped Imran Khan make false cases against his opponents in order to disqualify them. I have been wondering why DG ISPR has not given a statement about these serious allegations even though a couple of days have passed.”

    Asad Umar said that he believes that Dastagir is lying but is still waiting for DG ISPR’s statement because these are very serious allegations and the from the military spokesperson should respond to them.

    Asad Umar also said that in reality, the government knew that the PTI government would start delivering on the economy and thus Khan had to be ousted through a conspiracy.

    Last week, Energy Minister Khurram Dastgir revealed why the coalition government came into power.

    “Mass disqualifications would have taken place had Imran Khan remained in power,” said Dastgir when anchorperson Syed Talat Hussain asked why the sitting government chose to come into power for a year and a half.

    “This is based on information. Imran Khan and his followers would have stayed in power for 15 years. The entire Opposition would have been disqualified. He [Imran Khan] was of the point of view that he will remove everyone and will not spare anyone.”

    “From Shehbaz Sharif to Khaqan Abbasi to Ahsan Iqbal, everyone of us would have been disqualified. We made a coalition government for that very reason. Imran Khan had fascist plans.”

    The joint Opposition’s candidate Shehbaz Sharif was elected as the 23rd Prime Minister of Pakistan. Imran Khan was voted out of office through a no-confidence motion on April 9.

    Data from the Reuters Digital Media Report 2022 shows that among users of social media platforms, TikTok took over Snapchat and Telegram in 2021 and 2022 respectively, across the world. It is the fastest growing platform among all social media channels. In 2021, only five per cent of the global audience was using TikTok and this number has grown to 16 per cent in 2022. Snapchat audience decreased by one per cent to 12 per cent while Telegram has seen an increase of five per cent with new global audience of 12 per cent.

    Social media usage has also increased throughout the world.

    Trust in BBC falls by 20%

    Data mentioned in the report also shows that the average level of trust in news networks globally has reduced by eight points from 50 per cent to 42 per cent in a year. Moreover, in the UK, the proportion of people not trusting BBC has increased from 11 per cent to 26 per cent while the proportion trusting BBC has fallen by 20 per cent.

    The attached graph shows how the UK audience’s trust in the BBC has dwindled over time.

    Another important thing to notice is that TikTok is not just being used for fun videos. It is also emerging as a new player in the news ecosystem. More and more people are turning to TikTok for their news. It has also taken over Snapchat for news as well.

    Audience is less interested in news

    Globally, the interest of people in news is falling. The proportion that says they are extremely interested in the news has fallen sharply over time. On average, in 2015, 67 per cent of global audiences was interested in the news while this number declined to 47 per cent in 2022 with a change of -20 per cent.

    Consumers are avoiding the news

    The report also says that 38 per cent of the audience actively avoided news in 2022. The audience becoming least interested in the news has been increasing from 2017 to 2022 in every country except for Italy. The attached graph shows the percentage of people staying away from news in different countries.

    The most common reason for avoiding news is politics and Covid-19. Data shows that 43 per cent of users avoid the news because of excessive news regarding Covid-19 and politics. Moreover, 36 per cent of the audience thinks that the news has a negative impact on their mood.

    People under the age of 35 struggle to understand news

    People under 35 are also finding it hard to understand the news and it is causing them to avoid the news.

    Younger audiences want journalists to express personal opinions

    Data from the report shows that 46 per cent of the population between the ages of 18-24 do not want news channels to just report news on social media but want them to express their personal opinions alongside reporting news, while the opposite is true for people of age 55+. 57 per cent of older people want news channels to stick to reporting the news. The older the consumer, the more the proportion of them want journalists to stick to just posting news on social media.

    Majority uses smart phones to access morning news

    In most countries, the majority use mobile phones to access news in the morning with the highest percentage being 43 per cent in Norway. In most countries, the least used medium for news is print media. The 2021 report shows that the lockdown during Covid-19 proved to be a nail in the coffin for print media.

    Younger audiences prefer watching the news rather than reading it

    Although the significant majority still prefers reading news irrespective of age, data reveals that people aged 18-24 prefer watching the news (17 per cent) which is more when compared to older people (11 per cent for age above 55). The younger you are, the more you prefer watching the news rather than reading about it.

    Key findings in Digital Media Report 2021

    Data from the digital media report last year (2021) showed that the trust level for news reports in Asia-Pacific is no more than 50 per cent with the most being in Thailand. It is important to notice that the USA is reported to have a trust level of 29 per cent in the news, which is the lowest of all 46 countries selected for the report. The report says it is the aftermath of deep division over the US ‘stolen election reports’ and the killing of George Floyd.

    Other key findings of last year’s report showed that Facebook, which was known for Covid-19 misinformation, was still used by 32 per cent for news and the most successful social media platform was YouTube.

  • Clash in Muzaffarabad jail due to unavailability of facilities

    A protest by the prisoners of Rara Central Jail in Muzaffarabad turned into a clash between the police and the prisoners on Saturday, reports Samaa News.

    The clash started when some prisoners turned violent and started a fight with the security personnel.

    The prisoners were protesting against the unavailability of facilities for the past few days. However, no casualty has been reported so far.

    The police summoned additional forces to keep the situation under control and started searching for the prisoners who initially started the fight.

    Last year, a clash was also reported in Adiala jail, Rawalpindi. The clash was between two groups that led to the transfer of 23 convicted and under-trial prisoners to other jails and the suspension of 11 jail officials, including two superintendents.

  • Islamabad Traffic Police to suspend driving licenses of habitual offenders

    With the aim of maintaining traffic discipline and a safe road environment in the city, the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has made the decision to suspend the driving licenses of habitual offenders of traffic rules.

    Syed Mustafa Tanveer, Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic), said the ITP has put in place a system to hold those who break traffic rules accountable. He stated that digital challan records would be reviewed on a regular basis, and that those whose licenses had been revoked for repeated violations of traffic laws would have their license suspended.

    He has also instructed the Zonal DSPs to maintain traffic discipline in the city and prosecute violators sternly.

    In its first step, ITP examined the digital challan log and identified 17 people who had been involved in multiple violations under sections 15 and 16 of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance. Six of the 17 violators have been ordered to attend traffic rules and road safety classes for five days, while the driving licenses of 11 others have been suspended.

    He stated that violators of traffic rules will face severe consequences, and that road users will be held accountable in order to protect the lives of others.

    SSP Traffic warned that violators would be supervised on a routine basis and that there would be no tolerance for traffic violations.
