World unites over Twitter debate that Swedes don’t let you eat if you are at their house

A Twitter thread went viral recently in which people shared their experiences of visiting Swedish homes and not being served food.

A question was posted on Reddit: “What is the weirdest thing you had to do at someone else’s house because of their culture/religion?”

One of the users replied, “I remember going to my Swedish friend’s house. And while we we were playing in his room, his mom yelled that dinner was ready. And check this. He told me to wait in his room while they ate.”

“I slept over a friends house. When we woke up, he said he was going downstairs for a few minutes. After about 15 minutes I go on the stairs to see wtf is happening and they are eating breakfast. They see me and tell me he has almost done and will be up there soon. I still think about it 25 years later,” another user replied.

People on social media are finding this tradition a little “weird”. Have a look at some of the reactions:

  • 40-50 per cent hike expected in gas tariff

40-50 per cent hike expected in gas tariff

The government plans to hike the system gas tariff by up to 50 per cent as part of its efforts to gain access to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout.

The Ministry of Energy anticipates the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) determining the revenue requirement for the coming fiscal year in June. As per The News, which cited sources, the tariff increase will take effect on July 1, 2022.

Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC) and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), according to an Energy Ministry official, have suffered massive combined losses of Rs550 billion in recent years.

Both are losing money since the system gas rate has not been raised in a long time. SNGPL is expected to lose Rs350 billion, while SSGC is expected to lose roughly Rs200 billion.

OGRA will now calculate the system gas tariff under the modified OGRA statute. The IMF has encouraged the government to ensure that gas firms do not lose money as a result of the gas tariff’s stagnation, as well as to follow the modified OGRA law in its entirety.

It’s worth noting that the government raised the price of petroleum goods by Rs30 per liter last week after the IMF stated that the bailout package would not be resumed unless the country ended petroleum product subsidies.

‘Bushra jald chor degi’: Aamir Liaquat predicts Imran Khan’s divorce, curses him

Former National Assembly member and television host Dr. Aamir Liaquat took to his Instagram handle to lash out at former PM Imran Khan.

The Aalim Online host has held Imran responsible for his recent split with wife Dania Shah.

He also accused Imran of paying Dania so that she seeks divorce from him. Aamir went on to predict Imran’s divorce, and predicted that Bushra Bibi will leave him.

Earlier this month he reacted to the speculation about his potential marriage with journalist and former PM Imran Khan’s ex-wife Reham Khan.

The Neelam Ghar host reacted to a netizen’s tweet that if he and Reham actually get married then they’ll have a son like Atta Tarar.

Aamir replied that the answer will soon come from the skies. He also took a jibe at PTI by saying that there is justice on the skies and not Tehreek-e-Insaaf.

The veteran host stated recently stated that sources from FIA have informed him that PTI’s social media team is behind his character assassination on social media to make Imran Khan happy as he was upset with Liaquat for ditching PTI at a crucial stage.

Aamir also dragged Fawad Chaudhry’s name in the matter and stated that he overlooks the social media department.

The Current reached out to Former focal person on digital media to former PM Khan, Dr Arsalan Khalid who dismissed these claims and exclusively said, “Aamir is so irrelevant that we don’t even think about him.”

Prior to his seperation with Dania Shah, he published a video message against Khan.

Aamir claimed that ever since Imran has met Russian President Vladimir Putin, he has become like him, adding adjectives like “stubborn, ill-mannered and rebellious.

Nepal missing plane found: Rescue recovers 14 bodies

Following the announcement by Nepal’s army that it had located the crash site of the missing plane, rescue workers have so far recovered 14 bodies from the crash site. There were 22 passengers on board.

According to a spokesman for the Tribhuvan International Airport in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu, the search for others is continuing.

A small passenger plane, operated by private airline Tara Air went missing in Nepal on Sunday during cloudy weather.

The airline said the plane was carrying four Indians, two Germans and 16 Nepalis, including three crew.

The government officials said that the plane took off in the morning for a 20-minute flight but lost contact with the control tower five minutes before landing.

The state-owned Nepal Television said villagers had seen an aircraft on fire at the foot of the Himalayan mountain Manapathi.

Referring to the fire site, Tara Air spokesperson told Reuters, “Ground search teams are proceeding towards that direction but it could be a fire by villagers or by cowherds. It could be anything.” The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) also said a team was headed to that area.

Nepal has a record of air accidents because of the huge mountains that country has. Its weather can change suddenly and airstrips typically located in mountainous areas are hard to reach.

  • Is Pakistan facing a fake news emergency?

Is Pakistan facing a fake news emergency?

Through the last PTI government and the political turmoil which it left in its wake, fake news and misinformation has been on the rise. Is this phenomenon endemic to Pakistan? Are we, as a nation, particularly more susceptible to being caught in the crossfire of modern political propaganda?

In March 2022, when the PDM coalition tabled the no confidence motion against Imran Khan, a gradually swelling tide of fake news turned into a tsunami of internet propaganda projecting from both sides. There appears to be another wave of misinformation campaigns, following up with the fake news epidemic that engulfed Pakistan during the peak months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Only a handful of genuine fact checkers have been dedicatedly working against what seems like an uphill task of fighting fake news. In that way, the cause faces as much obstruction in society as the fight against climate change. From accurately estimating the number of attendees in a political jalsa, to explaining doctored videos and images and those used out of context, to fact checking statements made by politicians against each other, fact checking has become the most essential part of news coverage.

This is why what we do, matters.

    Jalsas and their size

On March 27, 2022, former PM Imran Khan addressed a large crowd at the Islamabad Parade ground. When Khan labelled it the largest public gathering in Islamabad in Pakistan’s history, several counter points surfaced on the platform. From misleading information PTA’s data collection on active mobile phones in the locality.

On May 6, 2022, images and videos from Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s jalsa in Fateh Jung also went viral on Twitter. Where some videos slandered the party for not being able to bring out enough people on the streets, some lauded the PMLN for a ‘powershow’.

A large number of tweets use misleading images from different points in various rallies and compare crowd sizes directly. This is a very recurrent theme in political fact checking and recently, a lot of politically motivated social media users claim to be “fact checking” claims regarding crowd sizes through comparing pictures.

However, a more accurate methodology would be to follow a step by step procedure of estimating the size of the ground or the vicinity of the location where a political rally is held, then reviewing aerial images reported by varying media houses (ARY, GEO, Dunya etc) and applying different methods of footfall estimation based on area covered. A tool most commonly used by fact checkers is MapChecking, developed by a French developer, Anthony Catel.

Images and videos: doctored or out of context

Fabricated images and videos constitute a range of fake news elements which are shared on Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram. Either clips and photographs from the past are reposted in an invalid context to propagate or insinuate a specific political perception or simply images and videos are altered to give it a renewed meaning and then shared widely to extend the intended political messaging.

A viral image of a broken ATM went viral and PMLN supporters misused it in the current political context to exaggerate the extent of damage and destruction that was carried out by rogue PTI supporters in Islamabad this week. Earlier in March, right after Imran Khan’s visit to Russia, a doctored video of Putin showed him promising an oil pipeline from Russia to all the way to Pakistan, which did not happen. A doctored message attributed to Justice (R) Nasira Iqbal was circulating the internet in April and an altered video of Imran Khan was circulating in the beginning of May, claiming that he was bowing down in front of a Jewish politician.

These images and videos can be fact checked by reverse image searches, through the fact checking plugin called InVID and through online tools like Forensically which allows you to spot the areas in an image which show signs of editing or any kind of fabrication.

    Political statements

A doctored video went viral claimed that through the Ehsas program Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a 36,000 PKR “eidi cash” reward. However, it was falsely edited to look like a GEO News headline. Similar political statements, like Bilawal Bhutto’s Kanpay Taang Rahi Hain video and the viral Facebook post which claimed that Fatima Bhutto released a statement in Imran Khan’s favor in the first week of April.

Misconstrued statements publicized in situations of extreme political turmoil such as the current constitutional crisis at hand, are able to increase polarization on social media platforms and pivot the conversation on misinformation in the direction that it is labelled and counter labelled by opposing political groups to slander the other.

Another significant aspect of this discussion is a recent surge in what can be called “fake checkers” . Much like the @Pk_FactChecker handle on Twitter, made by the Ministry of Information and Broadcast during Imran Khan’s government, other small fact checking outfits have popped up, which minimize the significance of transparency and fairnes in terms of verifying misinformation.

    Introducing the Current Check

In light of how common fake news has become, and how often we are made to believe it is true, The Current is set to launch their sister website, The Current Check where we aim to uphold the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) Code of Principles and set a standard for consistent and accurate fact checking to fight the flood of misinformation.

Through this platform we will also initiate accessible and widely disseminated video fact checking which not only overcomes the issue of English news media’s exclusion of the masses but also the fact that digital video content has a significantly higher shareability than a fact check article.

Our aim is to give our followers accurate information, that is checked on international guidelines. While we know that people follow and believe what they want to believe, a fundamental right, we aim and will provide accurate information that is truthful, with information to back it up.

Germany to strengthen trade and investment ties with Pakistan

In a recent meeting with Federal Minister of Commerce and Investment Syed Naveed Qamar, German Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr Tobias Lindner expressed his hope that Germany and Pakistan would further strengthen and expand bilateral relations, particularly in trade and investment.

Both countries discussed multiple aspects of bilateral ties, along a great emphasis on improving trade and financial collaboration to sustain economic growth in a post-Covid pandemic world. • Khan angry with PTI leaders over failure to mobilise supporters

Khan angry with PTI leaders over failure to mobilise supporters

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan is unhappy with his party’s top leaders for failing to mobilise supporters to participate in his long march to Islamabad, revealed Geo News anchorperson Shahzeb Khanzada in his programme ‘Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath’.

According to him, Khan thought that more people would turn up but people did not show up in Rawalpindi. Even his party leaders appeared to have gone missing in action.

On the contrary, sources say, PTI leaders argued that they were not given enough time to prepare by their leader. They even asked him to extend the date but Khan wanted to maintain an element of surprise for the government.

According to PTI leaders, except for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s (KP) supporters, PTI does not have many supporters elsewhere who would brave the police or tear gas or the heat in an effort to try and reach Islamabad, the anchor revealed.

Moreover, the leaders thought that the long march would not be a good idea, and the announcement of a dharna (sit-up) would end up more of a problem for PTI. According to Khanzada, they are even unhappy with Khan’s six-day ultimatum to the government.

According to PTI sources, Imran Khan seems to be only listening to some people who are close to him, instead of politicians better adept at traditional constituency politics.

  • Islamabad Traffic Police intensifies crackdown against wrong parking

The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) recently fined numerous motorists for wrong parking in order to maintain a smooth flow of traffic in the federal capital.

The SSP Traffic Syed Mustafa Tanveer instructed all Zonal DSPs to guarantee traffic law enforcement through a courteous attitude toward citizens. He advised that motorists should be treated equally and informed officials about traffic laws.

Furthermore, the SSP Traffic asserted that only pedestrians had the right to use the footpath and that no parking would be permitted there. He was of the view that vehicles should be parked in designated areas of shopping malls while an awareness campaign to educate citizens visiting the malls was underway.

The number of vehicles in the federal capital has increased drastically in recent years, impeding transportation.

Tanveer stated that it is our prime concern to guarantee the comfort of road users by preserving traffic discipline, and that every effort will be made to that end.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry commenting on Baqar said, “Justice (r) Maqbool Baqir is a reasonable man, hopefully, he will not be a part of this process.”

  • Inclusion of Rs28 billion relief package in upcoming budget: PM Shehbaz

Inclusion of Rs28 billion relief package in upcoming budget: PM Shehbaz

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif said that the government would include a Rs28 billion package in the upcoming budget to provide relief to the masses. He was addressing the nation yesterday (May 27).

PM Shehbaz said that aside from the relief package, the government would immediately provide Rs2,000 for around 85 million people to help them fight the effects of inflation.

“This is aside from the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) monetary assistance they are already getting. This relief package will be included in the next fiscal budget,” the premier said.

The premier added that he has directed the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) to provide 10kg of wheat to people for Rs400.

‘It was you who signed tough deals with IMF, not us’

Criticising ex-PM Imran Khan and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, PM Shehbaz said it was Khan who struck a deal with the IMF, not the current government.

“We did not agree to the strict conditions laid forth by the IMF; you burdened the masses with heavy inflation, not us; you buried the country under heavy debts, not us; international institutions said that corruption increased during your tenure, not ours; electricity load shedding was brought back during your tenure and you are responsible for the economy’s suffering.”

If Imran Khan thinks his “ego” is bigger than the state, then it is his misconception

PM Shehbaz said if Imran Khan thinks his “ego” is bigger than the state, then it is his misconception as Pakistan will function in line with the Constitution and not upon following the direction of one person.

Without naming Imran Khan or the PTI directly, he said one man had fabricated an international conspiracy on the basis of foreign correspondence, even though the National Security Committee (NSC) and Pakistan’s ambassador to the US had repeatedly refuted such claims.

“For his personal political gain, he is harming Pakistan’s diplomatic relations. Pakistan will be governed by the constitution, not one man’s whims,” the PM asserted.

“Due to the faulty policies of the previous government, our friendly countries are upset. We will restore fraternal relations with them,” he said, adding Pakistan wanted peace in South Asia and urged India to withdraw its Aug 5, 2019 decision on Kashmir and then sit with Pakistan for dialogue to resolve all issues.

Khan has repeatedly blamed the US for backing the no-confidence motion that leads to his ousting and has refused to accept the newly-elected government.

Shehbaz added that Khan claimed that the US Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu had threatened Pakistan’s ambassador for removing his government.

“This person, when Pakistan was progressing under prime minister Nawaz Sharif, staged dharnas. At that time, Chinese President Xi Jinping had to come to Pakistan, but due to [Khan’s] arrogance, the agreement that was scheduled to take place was delayed.”

The prime minister said that taking up the challenge of coming into power was not easy as the country’s situation was gloomy, and the nation was plagued with hatred during the previous government’s tenure.

‘PTI govt announced petroleum subsidy for political gains’

Explaining the reason for the increase in petroleum prices, Shehbaz said,” From oil-producing countries to developed countries, everyone was gripped with economic turmoil. But for political gains, the previous government announced a petrol subsidy for which there was no room in the national exchequer,” the premier said.

Govt to provide targeted subsidies to 14 million families, says Miftah Ismail

Finance Minister Miftah Ismail said that the government would provide targeted subsidies to 14 million deserving families as announced by PM Shehbaz Sharif in his address to the nation.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Miftah shared the criteria for availing of the ‘Sasta Petrol, Sasta Diesel’ relief package.

“Women, whose household income was less than Rs40,000 per month, could text their Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) numbers on 786 or call that number to receive Rs2,000”, said Miftah.

“We cannot provide complete relief as we do not have the resources but we will do all we can to dress the wounds [of poor people].”

Miftah further added: “7.3 million beneficiaries of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) are already getting Rs2000, and the government is planning to add 7 million more people to the database who would receive Rs2,000 in terms of fuel subsidy.”

Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar tweeted, “The decision to go to IMF should be taken by a government with a fresh mandate.”

Agreeing with Khokhar, Miftah said, “He is right, the new government will strike a new deal with the IMF after taking a fresh mandate next year, but this is a coalition government and our priority is to steer the country out of economic crisis and maintain an economic stability.”

“Therefore, we are continuing with the previous IMF programme, which was finalised by the PTI government,” he said.
