Shoaib Akhtar vs Nauman Niaz: Whose side is Twitter is on?

TV host Dr Nauman Niaz and former Pakistani speedster Shoaib Akhtar indulged in a tense and aggressive banter in a live show on Pakistan Television (PTV) soon after the Pakistan and New Zealand match.

Akhtar was giving his opinion on Haris Rauf and mistakenly took Shaheen Shah Afridi’s name. Nauman corrected him and after a heated exchange, Nauman asked the former pacer to leave. Shoaib resigned from the show and later he explained the reason why he did that on social media.

Soon after the live spat, Twitter was trending with reactions to the incident. We scouted Twitter to see whose side Pakistani Twitterati were on and it is clear that people think Shoaib handled the situation well and Nauman Niaz was in the wrong. While we tried to find tweets in favour of Nauman, we weren’t able to. Here are some of the reactions:

After PM Khan’s visit, Saudi Arabia revives $3 billion financial support to Pak

Saudi Arabia has agreed to revive its financial support to Pakistan, including about $3 billion in safe deposits and $1.2bn to $1.5bn worth of oil supplies on deferred payments, reports Dawn.

The news was first broken by Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry. The minister took to Twitter and wrote, “Saudi Arabia announcement support Pakistan with 3 billion US dollar as deposit in Pakistan central bank and also financing refined petroleum product with 1. 2 billion us dollars during the year.”

Energy Minister of Pakistan, Hammad Azhar confirmed the news and tweeted, “The Saudi Development Fund has generously announced for Pakistan an oil deferred payments facility of $1.2bn/annum and a $3 bn deposit with SBP. This will help ease pressures on our trade & forex accounts as a result of the global commodities price surge.”

Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan thanked Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman for supporting Pakistan with the deposit in the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and extending the oil facility on deferred payment.

The facility is expected to help Pakistan convince the International Monetary Fund  (IMF) about its financing plan.

The news came after PM Khan’s three visit to Saudi Arabia, where he went to attend the launch ceremony of the Middle East Green Initiative (MGI) Summit in the capital Riyadh.

‘I resign from PTV’: Shoaib Akhtar, Nauman Niaz exchange hot words on air

On Pakistan’s state-run sports channel PTV Sports, former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar and host Dr Nauman Niaz had a hot exchange of words during the live transmission of the Pakistan and New Zealand match.

After the nail-biting T20 World Cup match between Pakistan and New Zealand, Dr Nauman asked Shoaib a question, which turned into a fight when Dr Niaz asked Akhtar to leave the show.

The clash started off when Nauman asked Shoaib Akhtar a question. Shoaib said Hassan Ali should not have bowled in the beginning as the ball was reversing later.

Shoaib asked Nauman about Shaheen Shah Afridi’s ball reversing. “Did you see the game?”

Nauman replied, “Yes, I saw the match.” In response, Shoaib Akhtar said again, “Were you lost?”

During the same conversation, Shoaib went ahead and talked about giving credit to Lahore Qalandars while talking about Haris Rauf. However, Shoaib continued by mentioning Shaheen Shah Afridi.

“Aqib Javed brought Shaheen Shah Afridi and made him a part of the player development program,” said Shoaib. Here, Nauman said in the middle of Shoaib’s speech that “Shaheen Afridi had played under-19 for Pakistan.” On this Shoaib said, “I am talking about Haris Rauf. Nauman Niaz reiterated that Shaheen had played for Pakistan. Shoaib Akhtar responded rather seriously, “Sir please! Somebody came to work.”

“You are becoming rude. I didn’t mean to say this … but if you’re getting over-smart then go. I’m saying this on-air,” responded Nauman.

The host took a break from the show. After they returned on-air, Shoaib was once again asked a question by Nauman.

“The way I was treated on national television, I don’t think I should be sitting here. I am resigning from PTV,” said Shoaib before walking out from the studio.

After the squabble, there were speculations that the entire fight was pre-planned. Shoaib took to Twitter and wrote, “Multiple clips are circulating on social media so I thought I should clarify. Dr Nauman was obnoxious and rude when he asked me to leave the show, it was embarrassing especially when you have legends like sir Vivian Richards and David Gower sitting on the set.”

“I tried to save everyone from embarrassment by saying I was pulling Dr Nauman’s leg with this mutual understanding that dr noman will also politely apologise and we will move on with the show, which he refused to do. Then I had no other choice,” added Shoaib.

  • India’s Dabur withdraws same-sex ad after minister threat

The Indian company Dabur, which makes beauty creams, withdrew an advertisement about a lesbian couple celebrating Karwa Chauth after online trolling and Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra’s threat, reports NDTV.

In its statement, the company said: “Fem’s Karwa Chauth campaign has been withdrawn from social media handles and we unconditionally apologise for unintentionally hurting people’s sentiments.”

Mishra slammed the ad and said, “In future, they will show two men taking ‘feras’ (marrying each other according to Hindu rituals).” According to him, the police had ordered the company to withdraw the ad.

“And if it fails to do so, take legal steps after examining the advertisement,” the minister added.

While there was praise for the ad as well, some objected to the ad for promoting fairness. One person wrote: “Why doesn’t Dabur or whoever comes up with similar ads for Xmas or Eid or any other festival? Why target Hindu festivals?”

Actress Pooja Bhatt, while reacting to the ad tweeted: “Pity a giant like Dabur refused to stand behind their AD. While I don’t endorse a fairness cream in principle I reserved my comment as they attempted to celebrate Inclusivity and Pride. So why hide now?”

Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed, while speaking at a press conference about the banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan’s (TLP), said: “We cannot expel the French ambassador as demanded by the TLP.”

He said the government is “waiting for them to stick to their word”.

  • $1.6 billion: IPL gets two new big-budget teams, Lucknow and Ahmedabad

$1.6 billion: IPL gets two new big-budget teams, Lucknow and Ahmedabad

Two corporate giants of India, RP Sanjiv Goenka Group (RPSG) and CVC Capital Partners (Irelia Company Pte Ltd) have bid a staggering sum of money, running over USD 1.6 billion, to buy the two new IPL franchises, reported ESPN Cricinfo.

On Monday, at a walk-in bidding event in Dubai, RPSG paid INR 7,090 crore (USD 940 million approx) to buy the Lucknow franchise while CVC, a private equity fund, bought the Ahmedabad franchise for INR 5,625 crore (USD 750 million approx).

As per details, the RPSG bid was about 250% more than the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI’s) base price of INR 2,000 crore (USD 270 million approx). The corresponding figure for CVC was over 160%. In all, 22 companies had purchased the tender document but only nine were eventually present at the walk-in bid event held in Dubai that lasted over six hours on Monday.

The bids, enclosed in a sealed envelope, were opened after a lengthy technical evaluation process. The entire process was overseen by the IPL governing council as well as the BCCI top brass led by board president Sourav Ganguly, secretary Jay Shah, treasurer Arun Dhumal, vice-president Rajeev Shukla and joint-secretary Jayesh George.

In a BCCI media release on Monday, Ganguly said it was “heartening” to see two new teams being added to the IPL roster “at such a high valuation, and it reiterates the cricketing and financial strength of our cricket ecosystem”. Brijesh Patel, the IPL Governing Council chairman said the IPL was “globalising” cricket and its importance as being one of the “most sought-after” leagues in sport was established through the bids from “different parts of the world and from parties with diverse portfolios”.

The new franchises will need to pay out the entire amount over a 10-year period. To ensure that the owners have a solid foundation, the BCCI had put stringent norms in the bid document. A bidder needed to have a turnover of at least INR 3,000 crore per year for a minimum of the last three years. Measured in terms of net asset value (assets minus liability) this number was pegged at INR 2,500 crore per year over the last three years. In the case of a consortium, the BCCI had put a cap on the number of investors totaling to not more than three.

Apart from Ahmedabad and Lucknow, the cities shortlisted by the IPL in the bid document were Cuttack, Dharamsala, Guwahati and Indore. Bidders were permitted to pick more than one city but would get the rights to own just one franchise.

Along with Lucknow, RPSG also put in bids for Ahmedabad and Indore. While it put the same price (INR 7,090 crore) for Lucknow and Ahmedabad, it bid INR 4,790 crore for Indore.

CVC picked Ahmedabad and Lucknow and its bid for the latter was INR 5,166 crore. Significantly, the minimum bid price raised by all nine bidders was over INR 4,000 crore.

It is understood that the BCCI wanted to allot the winner for each city keeping in mind the highest possible bid combination and hence RPSG got Lucknow and CVC Ahmedabad. If RPSG were allotted Ahmedabad, then the BCCI would have lost over INR 400 crore on Lucknow. In contrast, in 2008 when the IPL started, the BCCI had allowed the bidders to pick their city of choice.

The winners aside, among the bidders to eventually put their hat in the ring were Lancer Capital, who own Manchester United football club, Ahmedabad-based Indian infrastructure biggie Adani Group, Torrent Pharma, Kotak Group, All Cargo Logistics, Capri Global, and Hindustan Media Ventures Limited.

The Adani Group was the third-highest bidder among the final nine, listing the same bid price – INR 5,100 crore – for both Ahmedabad and Lucknow.

This is the second stint in the IPL for RPSG, who earlier ran the Pune-based Rising Pune Supergiant(s) in 2016 and 2017, when Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals served a two-year suspension in the aftermath of the 2013 IPL corruption scandal.

A documented sports lover, Goenka wore his emotions on the sleeve the last time around, even replacing MS Dhoni as captain ahead of the 2017 season after they had finished runners-up in 2016. RPSG, which calls itself a “diversified business conglomerate”, also has wider interests in sport. They own Atletico Mohun Bagan in the Indian Super League and have owned teams in table tennis and boxing previously.

CVC, meanwhile, are an international conglomerate with offices throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas. They were the one of the – if not the – first private equity firms to invest heavily in sport. They had a controlling stake and ran Formula 1 for close to a decade until 2016, before selling it to Liberty Media, the current owners of Formula 1. Recently they took a minority stake in La Liga, the top-flight Spanish football league, and also have vast experience in rugby leagues globally.

The IPL, though, will be the first time CVC run a team as opposed to their traditional strength of investing in and running a sporting league. It is learned that this is the second time CVC were looking to run a team in the IPL, having failed to acquire a stake in the Delhi franchise in 2018, which went to Jindal South West (JSW).

CVC’s Ahmedabad home will be the world’s largest cricket stadium, the Narendra Modi Stadium, which has an advertised capacity of 132,000 people. Lucknow’s home games will be at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium.

Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum to take charge as DG ISI on Nov 20

Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan issued a notification on October 26 for the appointment of a new director-general (DG) of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency. Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum has been appointed as the new DG ISI and will take charge on November 20.

Notification for the appointment of the General Officers

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa called on Prime Minister Imran Khan today.

The meeting was part of the ongoing consultation process between the premier and army chief about the timing of change of command in ISI and selection of the new DG ISI.

During this process, a list of officers was received from the Ministry of Defence. Prime Minister interviewed all the nominees. A final round of consultation was held between the Prime Minister and Chief of Army Staff today.

After this detailed consultative process, the name of Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum was approved as the new DG ISI.

The designated DG ISI shall assume charge on November 20.

October 6: The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced a reshuffle in the army, in which Lt Gen Anjum replaced Lt Gen Faiz Hameed, who has been posted as Commander of Peshawar-based Corps XI.

October 12: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry on Tuesday confirmed the meeting between PM Khan and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa, and said, “PM Khan is the authority in appointing the DG ISI,” further adding that “all legal methods will be adopted in the appointment of the new director-general”.

However, rumours started circulating that PM Khan wanted Lt Gen Faiz Hameed to continue serving as the spymaster for some time due to the critical situation in neighbouring Afghanistan.

October 14: PM Khan convened an emergency meeting of the ruling party’s parliamentary group at Parliament House. Journalists questioned PM Khan about the appointment of the DG ISI. PM Khan did not answer the questions but laughed in response.

Prior to this, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-chairperson and former President Asif Ali Zardari, made an appearance before an accountability court in Islamabad today, where journalists questioned him about the appointment of DG ISI and he responded with laughter as well.

October 15: Fawad told the media that the notification regarding the appointment of the new DG ISI would be issued in two to three days.

News started circulating that PM Khan would take interviews of the potential candidates for the appointment of the new DG ISI and that a new summary with names of candidates for the position of ISI chief had been sent to the Prime Minister. Fawad denied the news and said, “Prime Minister Imran Khan will just meet all candidates (for the slot of DG ISI).”

October 19: Fawad said, “All the matters have been resolved” and announced that the notification of the new DG ISI would be issued this week.

“It [Opposition] is thinking that there are some differences between the government and security institutions but its euphoria is gradually fading,” said Fawad.
