‘PPP will forcefully oppose NAB Chairman’s illegal extension’: Bilawal Bhutto

Reacting to news that the government may give an extension to National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Javed Iqbal, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari tweeted: “PPP will forcefully oppose the illegal extension in the tenure of chairman NAB.”

“Even attempting an extension, for most controversial chairman in history, would serve to prove our argument that NAB is an extension of [prime minister Imran Khan] IK’s govt not impartial.”

The four-year tenure of NAB Chairman Javed Iqbal will end early next month.

The non-extendable tenure of the NAB chairman has led to rumours as Prime Minister Imran Khan refuses to consult the Leader of the Opposition and the President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Shehbaz Sharif.

PM Khan has refused to hold talks with Shehbaz Sharif as the latter is accused of corruption references filed against him by NAB.

“I will miss just walking out there with the lads, playing against best in the world with that feeling of nerves but also from a bowling point of view, knowing with my best ball I could get anyone out. • Germany’s centre-left Social Democrats narrowly win against Angela Merkel’s party

Germany’s centre-left Social Democrats narrowly win against Angela Merkel’s party

Germany’s centre-left Social Democrats narrowly won Sunday’s national election, projected results showed, and claimed a “clear mandate” to lead a government for the first time since 2005 and to end 16 years of conservative-led rule under Angela Merkel, reported BBC.

The SPD secured 25.7 per cent of the vote, while the ruling conservative CDU/CSU bloc gained 24.1 per cent. The Greens achieved the best result in their party’s history, coming in third with 14.8 per cent of the ballot.

A coalition must now be created to form a government.

Agreeing to a new coalition could take months, and will likely involve the smaller Greens and liberal Free Democrats (FDP).

“We are ahead in all the surveys now,” the Social Democrats’ chancellor candidate, Olaf Scholz, said in a round table discussion with other candidates after the vote.

Scholz’s conservative rival Armin Laschet signalled his bloc was not ready yet to concede, though his supporters were subdued.

“It is an encouraging message and a clear mandate to make sure that we get a good, pragmatic government for Germany,” he added after earlier addressing jubilant SPD supporters.

Scholz, 63, would become the fourth post-war SPD chancellor after Willy Brandt, Helmut Schmidt, and Gerhard Schroeder. Finance minister in Merkel’s cabinet, he is a former mayor of Hamburg.

Attention will now shift to informal discussions followed by more formal coalition negotiations which could take months, leaving Merkel in charge of a caretaker role.

Scholz and Laschet both said they would aim to strike a coalition deal before Christmas.

Merkel plans to step down after the election, making the vote an era-changing event to set the future course of Europe’s largest economy.

NZ coach urges players to block out noise around T20 World Cup opener against Pak

New Zealand cricket team coach Gary Stead urged his players to block out the noise around the upcoming Twenty20 (T20) World Cup opener against Pakistan.

According to Stuff, Stead said, “Certainly, being that it’s Pakistan, people will hype that up, but for us, it’s no different to any other match we play against them.”

The Kiwis will begin their World T20 campaign against Pakistan on October 26 at Sharjah after cancelling the tour of Pakistan minutes before the first One-Day International (ODI), citing a ‘security threat’.

Stead admitted that the decision to abandon the tour was disappointing for Pakistan but explained that it was not the team’s decision to make.

“Sometimes you don’t get made aware of everything, either. It’s really hard for me to comment on,” he said.

Following New Zealand’s abrupt decision, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) also called off their Pakistan tour.

Powerful pictures from transgenders protest against gang-rape group

A large number of people from the transgender community and their supporters protested outside the Karachi Press Club against a recent attack on its community by an alleged gang-rape group known as ‘Beelas’.

The protesters also denounced what they called “the beela culture” that has existed in Pakistan since the colonial era.

A transgender rights activist Dr Muhammad Moiz organised the protest. He posted the pictures on social media along with the demands and needs of the community in Pakistan.

“Help us dismantle these structures and create a more just and equitable world for everyone by not being silent bystanders as groups like the beela network inflict violence on our community,” Moiz wrote while sharing the pictures from the protest.

Following the protest on Friday, powerful and motivating pictures are making rounds on social media:

Earlier, Moiz came forward to share an incident of organised violence against him by the group [Beela]. A First Information Report (FIR) was registered by him.

In the video, he shared that on the night of September 19, he and his friends went to a birthday celebration of a friend, where the gang-rape group was already present. According to him, the group [Beelas] wanted to rape the ‘londay‘ (khwaja sira/effeminate boys) present there.

In his recent post, he has demanded a special committee overseeing khwaja sira in Sindh and a special helpline that khwaja siras can use in an emergency.

“The police must be sensitised to understand beelas’ behavior, while also addressing internal issues in the police departments that prevent most khwaja siras from launching FIRs,” he said in a caption.
