  • ‘Pretty Little Baby’ singer dead at 87

‘Pretty Little Baby’ singer dead at 87

Legendary American singer Connie Francis has died at the age of 87.

According to reports, the news was confirmed by her close friend and label president, Ron Roberts, in a Facebook post on Thursday, July 16. He wrote that it was with a heavy heart and deep sadness that he shared the passing of his dear friend Connie Francis the night before.

Her death comes just weeks after Francis revealed that she had been hospitalized due to extreme pain and was undergoing medical tests.

Born Concetta Franconero in Newark, New Jersey, Connie Francis became a global music sensation in the late 1950s. She gained fame with hit songs such as “Who’s Sorry Now?,” “My Heart Has A Mind Of Its Own,” and “Where the Boys Are.” In 1960, she became the first solo female artist to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with the song “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool.”

Francis expanded her fanbase by recording songs in multiple languages and appearing on major TV shows like American Bandstand and The Ed Sullivan Show.

Her life, however, was marked by several personal tragedies. In 1974, she survived a rape incident. She also lost her singing voice temporarily due to nasal surgery. In 1981, her brother was murdered in a mafia-related case. These events led to mental health challenges, including multiple psychiatric hospital stays, which she later said were due to misdiagnosis.

Despite all these hardships, Connie Francis made several comebacks in her career. She worked with the Ronald Reagan administration to support victims’ rights and partnered with Mental Health America to raise awareness about trauma and recovery.

Francis was married four times and adopted a son, Joseph Garzilli Jr. In a 2017 interview, she shared that she hoped people would remember her not just for her success but for the strength she showed through her struggles. She is survived by her son.

  • Is Donald Trump really coming to Pakistan?

Is Donald Trump really coming to Pakistan?

United States (US) President Donald Trump is expected to visit Pakistan later this year, media reports claimed Thursday, citing sources familiar with the matter.

While there has been no official confirmation by the US so far, a Pakistani foreign office spokesperson said they were not aware of any such visit. At least two major news outlets have also since removed the claim from their respective websites.

Amid mixed reports and no official response to the claim by the US so far, if confirmed, the visit would be the first by a US president since nearly two decades ago when President George W Bush visited the country in 2006.

It may be noted that the claim comes as President Trump continues to shower praise on Pakistan and the country’s civil-military leadership since after the military clashes against India in May this year.

As part of the sudden shift in Trump’s tone towards Pakistan, he also hosted Field Marshal Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Syed Asim Munir at the White House in June.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, President Trump was asked whether the discussions included the then ongoing Iran-Israel conflict. In response, he said, “They [Pakistan] know Iran very well, better than most, and they’re not happy about anything. It’s not that they’re bad with Israel. They know them both, actually, but they know Iran better. He [Field Marshal Munir] agreed with me.”

President Trump also thanked Field Marshal Asim Munir for not going to war with India, and expressed similar gratitude to Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, whom he said had met with him “a few days ago”.

“These two very smart people decided not to keep going with a war that could have been a nuclear war. Pakistan and India are two big nuclear powers,” he added, also revealing that the US was working on a trade deal with Islamabad.

While Field Marshal Asim Munir has become the first serving Chief of Army Staff (COAS) to hold a one-on-one meeting with a sitting US president, the meeting also marked the first time a serving Pakistani army chief, without holding political office or ruling under martial law, was formally received at this level.

Trump, in days leading to the meeting, was at least twice also quoted praising Pakistanis as “intelligent people”. He had also said that he “loved Pakistan”.

  • ‘Deemak’ breaks box office records with Rs160 million collection in 38 days

‘Deemak’ breaks box office records with Rs160 million collection in 38 days

Pakistan’s biggest horror film Deemak has set a new record in Pakistani cinema, earning a massive Rs. 160 million in just 38 days.

This hit from Geo Films has grabbed public attention and even surprised critics.

“The film’s scary moments, gripping plot, and emotional characters kept the audience hooked in cinemas,” said a spokesperson for Geo Films.

Featuring brilliant performances by Faysal Quraishi, Sonya Hussyn, Samina Pirzada, Javed Sheikh, and Bushra Ansari, Deemak has turned horror into a hit genre on the big screen in Pakistani cinema.

“Long queues of moviegoers in cinemas across the country are testimony to the fact that the Pakistani people are now fully accepting quality and unique content,” added the spokesperson.

The film is written by Syed Murad Ali and directed by Rafay Rashdi and Ayesha Muzaffar.

Deemak, however, isn’t just about jump scares. The film dives into deeper issues like emotional trauma, generational neglect, domestic abuse, and the complicated bond between women in a household, especially the tense dynamic between daughter-in-law and mother-in-law. The haunting becomes a metaphor for how unspoken, unresolved pain can slowly and quietly destroy families from within.

Geo Films has previously delivered several blockbuster hits, including Khuda Ke Liye, Bol, Teefa in Trouble, The Legend of Maula Jatt, Donkey King, and Glass Worker, further solidifying its place as a pioneer in modern Pakistani cinema.

  • Black box recording reveals shocking reason behind Air India crash

Black box recording reveals shocking reason behind Air India crash

The tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad last month, which killed 260 people, including former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, may have been caused by a critical error by the flight’s captain, media reports suggest.

According to reports citing black box data, cockpit audio indicates Captain Sumeet Sabrawal might have turned off the fuel switches for both engines just after takeoff, causing the Boeing Dreamliner to lose power.

His co-pilot, Clive Kunder, reportedly questioned Captain Sabrawal’s move, asking why the switch for fuel supply had been switched off. Sabrawal, however, stayed calm despite Kunder’s visible concern.

32-year-old Clive had logged over 3,400 flight hours, while the 56-year-old Sabrawal, who joined Air India in 1994, had more than 15,000 hours under his belt, over half of them on Boeing aircraft. He was also a line training captain, responsible for mentoring younger pilots.

Earlier, Indian authorities released a preliminary report noting cockpit confusion, including the exchange about the fuel switches, but no blame was assigned. One of the pilots had even denied shutting off the fuel supply.

So far, there has been no official response from Boeing, India’s aviation authority, or Air India on the latest revelations.

The London-bound flight crashed on June 12 shortly after departing from Ahmedabad. Of the 242 passengers on board, 241 died, including 53 British citizens. Only one British-Indian passenger survived, seated at 11A. The plane crashed into a medical college building, killing 19 more people on the ground.

Captain Sabrawal, who was just months away from retirement, had called his father before the takeoff and promised to call again after landing in London, a call that never came. He was unmarried and came from an aviation family, with his father retired from India’s Civil Aviation Authority and two nephews also serving as pilots.

First Officer Clive had dreamed of becoming a pilot since childhood. He was engaged and was set to be married two months after the crash. His mother had also served as a flight attendant for Air India.

According to Air India, both pilots tested negative for alcohol or drug use before the flight and showed no signs of illness.

  • Three killed, multiple injured in Kalat ambush

Three killed, multiple injured in Kalat ambush

At least three people, including two Karachi-based Sabri qawwals, were killed, and 13 others sustained injuries after unidentified attackers opened fire on a passenger coach en route to Quetta from Karachi near a checkpost in Balochistan’s Kalat on Wednesday.

This comes days after unidentified armed men in Balochistan’s Sur-Dukai area had abducted innocent passengers from two Punjab-bound coaches and slain at least nine passengers.

A leading English newspaper cited the Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Kalat Shahzad Akbar as saying that three people who lost their lives in the bus firing in Kalat included famous qawal Ahmed Hussain Sabri, his son Ahmed Raza Sabri, who left for Quetta along with other musicians of the group in a bus.

According to reports, the attack occurred when the bus approached Nemargh Cross near Kalat district. The assailants, who were waiting on top of nearby mountains, initially opened fire and then threw hand grenades at the vehicle.

The exact number of passengers on board the targeted bus remains unknown.

The injured have been identified as Haider, Imran, Manzar, Abbas, Muhammad Saqib, Faysal, Muhammad Nadeem, Muhammad Rizwan, Musawir Abbas, Muhammad Waris, Faizan, Dilshad, Najeeb Ahmed (driver), and Bilal Ahmed.

Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind told a private media outlet that security agencies, district authorities, and rescue teams reached the scene immediately. The wounded were transferred to the Qalat District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital, where an emergency has been declared.

The spokesperson stated that security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to find the assailants, noting that they are still at large.

“Initial reports suggest that the attackers were waiting to strike. They closed the street from both sides,” he added.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has strongly condemned the terrorist incident, which, according to him, was carried out by the Fitna al Hindustan — a term used for terrorist organisations in Balochistan.

The prime minister offered prayers for the martyrs, extending his sympathies to the affected families and praying for patience and resilience during their difficult time. He also directed authorities to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured.

He vowed that perpetrators would not escape justice, warning that terrorists targeting innocent, unarmed civilians would be made to pay a heavy price.

Reiterating the government’s stance, he affirmed that both his administration and the country’s security forces were committed to eradicating terrorism from the nation.

Pakistan hires Japanese coach for Asian Baseball Championship

Pakistan Federation Baseball has hired Japanese coach Kazuto Nonaka as part of the coaching staff for the upcoming Asian Baseball Championship.

The championship will be held in China from September 22 to 28.

Fakhar Ali Shah said both players will join the national team in China for the championship.

He added that Nonaka’s coaching is expected to improve the skills of Pakistani players and strengthen the team’s overall performance.

  • Nearly 40,000 Pakistani pilgrims missing from Iran, Iraq, Syria

Nearly 40,000 Pakistani pilgrims missing from Iran, Iraq, Syria

Federal Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Sardar Muhammad Yousaf has revealed that nearly 40,000 Pakistani pilgrims who travelled to Iran, Iraq, and Syria are either missing or still present there, with no official record of their whereabouts.

During a press conference on Tuesday in Islamabad, Yousaf stated that, owing to the seriousness of the issue, the government has abolished the traditional “Salar system” (group leader-based system) and introduced a new computerised, organised mechanism to prevent such incidents in the future.

He explained that under the new system, only officially registered companies meeting government criteria will be authorised to arrange pilgrimage tours, with Zaireen Group Organisers (ZGOs) certificates issued to approved operators. This aims to ensure pilgrim safety and maintain transparent travel records.

The minister revealed that Iran, Iraq, and Syria have formally raised concerns with Pakistan over the disappearance of such a large number of pilgrims.

In response, the ministry has decided that all future pilgrimages must be conducted through licensed tour operators to ensure proper monitoring and accountability.

He calls on companies intending to operate as ZGOs to immediately register with the ministry under the newly approved pilgrim management framework.

Yousuf mentioned that the federal cabinet had already approved the new ZGO regulatory system, and under this, the ministry had released a public notice calling for registrations. “So far, over 1,400 companies have submitted registration applications,” he added.

According to reports, out of 1400 companies, 585 that have received security clearance have been instructed to complete their online registration through the ministry’s website and submit all required documents by July 31.

The minister further announced that a second advertisement has also been published seeking fresh applications from new companies interested in becoming ZGOs. The deadline for these applications is August 10.

  • Harry Potter star Emma Watson banned from driving after speeding offence

Harry Potter star Emma Watson banned from driving after speeding offence

Actress Emma Watson has been banned from driving for six months after she was caught speeding in Oxford, UK media reported on Wednesday.

Watson, best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series, was driving at 38mph in a 30mph zone on the evening of 31 July last year. The court heard that she already had nine points on her driving licence before the incident took place.

The 35-year-old actress, who is currently studying for a master’s degree in creative writing at the University of Oxford, was ordered to pay a total fine of £1,044 by High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court. She did not attend the brief five-minute hearing.

Representatives for Watson have been approached for comment but have not responded yet.

Watson rose to global fame in 2001 with the release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, alongside co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint. She starred in all eight Harry Potter films until 2011 before moving on to other projects such as Beauty and the Beast, The Bling Ring, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Her last film role was in the 2019 remake of Little Women. In 2023, she also launched her own sustainable gin brand with her brother.

A new Harry Potter TV adaptation is currently in production, with Dominic McLaughlin playing Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The series, being produced by HBO, is expected to take a decade to complete.

In a separate but similar incident, another Harry Potter actress, Zoe Wanamaker, was also banned from driving for six months on the same day and in the same court. Wanamaker, who played Madam Hooch in the wizarding series, was caught driving at 46mph in a 40mph zone on the M4 in Newbury, Berkshire, on 7 August 2024.

She was fined £1,044 and had three more points added to her licence, which already had nine points before the offence. Her lawyer told the court that she was not seeking special treatment and accepted the penalty.

District Judge Arvind Sharma endorsed three more points on both actresses’ licences, resulting in a six-month driving ban for each.
