  • PCB considering former all-rounder as new red-ball head coach

PCB considering former all-rounder as new red-ball head coach

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly close to appointing a new red-ball head coach, with a former all-rounder leading the race for the role.

According to reports, the PCB is considering Azhar Mahmood for the position. He is already under a two-year contract signed earlier this April. Although initially appointed as an assistant coach, his responsibilities were reduced after Mike Hesson was hired as the white-ball head coach.

Since Jason Gillespie stepped down as Test coach, no permanent replacement has been named. However, Azhar Mahmood has emerged as the top candidate to fill that vacancy. His deep understanding of Pakistan cricket and strong relationships with senior players are seen as key advantages. He has previously played a supporting role during several transitional phases for the national team.

While he was not part of the coaching setup during the recent series against Bangladesh, his availability and Test experience make him a strong contender. Reports suggest that his appointment would provide the PCB with a stable option during a time of uncertainty.

Pakistan does not have any Test matches scheduled until October, giving the board time to ensure a smooth transition. If appointed, Azhar would become the first permanent red-ball head coach since Gillespie’s departure. Aaqib Javed has been serving as the interim coach in the meantime.

Reports also suggest that potential changes in captaincy could follow, further highlighting the need for a steady presence in the dressing room.

  • Anwar Maqsood’s statement on women’s rights leaves internet scratching its head

Anwar Maqsood’s statement on women’s rights leaves internet scratching its head

Legendary writer Anwar Maqsood has come up with a statement that has left social media bewildered. The witty writer believes that men in Pakistan are deprived of basic rights, and until that changes, society cannot move forward nor can women’s rights be genuinely addressed.

Anwar Maqsood recently appeared on Gohar Rasheed’s program, where he shared his candid views on various social issues.

“In a country where men do not have rights, how can women’s rights be discussed,” he asked.

“If men get rights, Pakistani society will be fine.”

He stressed that while a father’s role is traditionally seen as the one who provides, it is the mother who truly shapes the individual.

“Although the responsibility of raising a man falls on the father, in fact, it is the mother who does it,” he said.

“In our society, the mother teaches children civility, distinction, and discipline.”

He continued by highlighting the father’s role, “The main role of the father is to bear the expenses of the family including his parents, wife, and children.”

Anwar Maqsood further said that he has been speaking up for men’s rights for decades, though the conversation often centers around women’s issues.

“Women’s rights are talked about a lot in Pakistan, but I am the only man who has been raising his voice for men’s rights for the last seventy years,” he said.

“How can women’s rights be discussed in a country where men do not have rights?”

Explaining what he meant by men’s rights, he elaborated, “Men should be allowed to do whatever they want to do. They should not be prevented from saying what they want to say, and they should also be allowed to write freely.”

He expressed hope for change, “Pakistan’s society will be fine the day men start getting their rights.”

Citing the famous case of writer Saadat Hasan Manto, he shared an example of how truth in art is often misunderstood: “A case was filed on one of Manto’s short stories, in which he had said, ‘I do not write on my own behalf, I write what happens in society. My society is dirty, that is why my writing is also dirty.’”

In response to a question about male ego, he stated, “In most men, ego appears after success although it shouldn’t. The way they used to live on a low salary, they should always live a simple life.”

He also offered a deep reflection on human desire, “Desires can destroy anyone. It is a bottomless well. If a person does not want anything, then he is the most successful person.”

On the topic of truth, Anwar Maqsood made a strong statement, “A person becomes worse than an animal when he lies because an animal never lies. Unfortunately, lying is respected in Pakistan and speaking the truth is not allowed.”

He ended the conversation with advice for men, “Men should continue to work until they die, because they are the guardians of their homes, and it is the responsibility of a guardian to fulfill his responsibilities well.”

  • Minister turns off ACs at Railways Headquarters over delays in air-conditioner installation for passengers

Minister turns off ACs at Railways Headquarters over delays in air-conditioner installation for passengers

Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi has taken strict action against officials over delays in installing air-conditioners in express trains. On Thursday, he ordered all ACs at the Pakistan Railways (PR) headquarters, including the CEO’s office, to be turned off.

This decision was not well received by many senior officers, who called the move inhumane.

“If anything wrong has happened, the minister should order an inquiry to fix responsibility instead of getting the ACs switched off,” one of the officials said.

He also criticised the minister for cancelling the Saturday public holiday, calling it “ridiculous” and “unjustified.”

According to the official, around 70 AC units were switched off at the headquarters.

Abbasi defended his decision, saying officials must understand the suffering of passengers who paid for AC coaches but did not get the promised facilities. “The department was supposed to receive as many as 100 AC units by June 10, but they received only four,” he said.

“The officers concerned should have placed supply orders with four or five firms to ensure timely delivery. Instead, they gave the order to just one vendor,” he pointed out, adding that even this vendor was contacted late, and the order should have been placed before the summer began.

The minister warned that if complaints about non-working ACs in trains continue, ACs in divisional headquarters across all seven divisions will also be switched off in phases.

Abbasi also spoke about his own efforts during Eid. “I didn’t spend time with my family during the Eid holidays. I started my journey from Rawalpindi on the third day of Eid,” he said. He went to Okara to offer condolences to the family of a railway official who died in the partial collapse of the Khanewal station bridge. He also inspected the Okara station and, on public demand, contacted the DG Passports to set up a passport office in the city.

At Khanewal, he met passengers who complained about non-operational ACs in their coaches. “This forced me to take action, and I finally did,” he said. Abbasi added that he is personally monitoring various inquiries and promised to protect the rights of passengers by all means.

He also mentioned that Rs26 billion has been allocated in the federal budget for the railway sector under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP). “Though I am not satisfied with this allocation, it will help us complete ongoing development schemes,” he said.

  • ‘Shameless, heartless’; Pakistanis slam journalist for cruel post on Indian aircraft crash

‘Shameless, heartless’; Pakistanis slam journalist for cruel post on Indian aircraft crash

London-based journalist Safina Khan has drawn widespread criticism in Pakistan for her insensitive tweet regarding Thursday’s tragic Air India passenger aircraft crash, with many netizens calling her “shameful and heartless”.

“Not only Rafales grounded, Indian passenger planes have also been crashing. According to reports so far, 130 people have lost their lives. Indian pilots need to get training from Pakistan’s Air Force (sic),” the journalist wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.

The aircraft, which was carrying more than 242 passengers, including 12 crew members, plunged 33 seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad city, slamming into buildings near the airport. The crash claimed over 290 lives, with one lone survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh.

According to Air India authorities, the passengers included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian national.

The aircraft crash sent shockwaves around the world, with condolences pouring in across borders over the tragic loss of lives.

Safina’s tweet was widely assailed by internet users in Pakistan. One wrote in reply, “I’m sorry for being rude, but quite literally shame on you.”

“Madam! In such a situation, one should sympathize with others, be they friends or enemies. This is what suits the civilized people. Becoming a pilot takes a lot of hard work. God forbid, if such an incident happens here tomorrow, what will be your statement? In any case, may Allah have mercy on all creatures for the sake of His beloved,” another user said.

A netizen, while reminding the journalist of the PIA plane crash in Karachi in 2020, asked: “Who were the pilots when the passenger plane crashed in Karachi? Don’t tweet like this about a technical glitch.”

“Couldn’t believe my eyes when I read this. Beyond shameful. No empathy, humanity,” said another netizen.

Journalist Khurram Iqbal called Safina “heartless” for her tweet. Sharing the screenshot of Safina’s tweet, he wrote in a caption, “This was a natural accident in which innocent people lost their lives. Every person with a heart feels sorrow and grief over it. Only a ruthless and heartless person can mock such an incident or criticise it in any way. It is truly a matter of sorrow.”

Calling Safina a “shameful attention seeker” at the time of the tragedy, journalist Asad Ali Toor on his official X handle wrote, “More than 240 families lost their loved ones and in this moment of grief, this shameful attention seeker is point scoring on a tragedy.. What pathetic desi character of London, thank you @BBhuttoZardari for not letting this cheapster take a selfie with you!”

  • ‘Forced marriage is psychological torture’; Atiqa Odho’s bold statement ignites heated debate

‘Forced marriage is psychological torture’; Atiqa Odho’s bold statement ignites heated debate

Senior actress Atiqa Odho has stirred major controversy on social media after criticising the concept of arranged marriages during a recent drama review show aired on a private TV channel.

Speaking candidly about societal pressures and the emotional challenges faced by individuals in arranged marriages, the actress said, “Forced marriage is painful for anyone, be it a man or a woman. It is psychological torture.”

She added, “We are part of a conservative society where boys and girls do not meet, do not talk, and then suddenly get married.”

Odho also highlighted, “I often talk to couples who had arranged marriages and ask them what they thought about marriage. Their answers are really surprising.”

Expressing concern over the lack of connection between partners before marriage, she said, “I am surprised by the idea that a girl lives behind the scenes her entire life and then suddenly gets forced to marry a stranger.”

Her comments have divided public opinion. While some praised her for addressing a taboo topic, others criticised her views, accusing her of pushing a “liberal” narrative.

Critics also brought up her personal life, with some users pointing out, “If she couldn’t succeed despite three love marriages, then there’s a big question mark. Instead of reviewing dramas, she’s now judging people’s personal lives.”

Others accused the actress of crossing cultural lines: “Atiqa Odho has been making bold statements that go against our values.”

Several social media users argued that arranged marriage dynamics have changed in modern times.

“Nowadays, boys and girls do get the chance to know each other before marriage calling it ‘forced’ is an exaggeration,” one user noted.

Some even called for action from media regulators, saying such remarks should be monitored.

“PEMRA should ban shows like these that spread controversial ideas,” a user wrote.

  • Iran ‘must make a deal, before there is nothing left’: Trump

Iran ‘must make a deal, before there is nothing left’: Trump

US President Donald Trump urged Iran on Friday to “make a deal”, warning that there will be more “death and destruction” after Israel launched deadly strikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities.

“I gave Iran chance after chance to make a deal. I told them, in the strongest of words, to “just do it,” but no matter how hard they tried, no matter how close they got, they just couldn’t get it done,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform.

He said, “I told them it would be much worse than anything they know, anticipated, or were told, that the United States makes the best and most lethal military equipment anywhere in the World, BY FAR, and that Israel has a lot of it, with much more to come – And they know how to use it.”

“Certain Iranian hardliner’s spoke bravely, but they didn’t know what was about to happen. They are all DEAD now, and it will only get worse! There has already been great death and destruction, but there is still time to make this slaughter, with the next already planned attacks being even more brutal, come to an end. Iran must make a deal, before there is nothing left, and save what was once known as the Iranian Empire. No more death, no more destruction, JUST DO IT, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. God Bless You All,” he said.

  • Ishowspeed beats viral ‘4 am routine guy’ Ashton Hall in foot race four times

Ishowspeed beats viral ‘4 am routine guy’ Ashton Hall in foot race four times

YouTuber and streamer IShowSpeed has proved he’s got real speed, defeating fitness influencer Ashton Hall in a foot race four times.

The two internet stars met on Wednesday afternoon at a park near Speed’s streaming setup to settle their online argument over who was faster.

Ashton Hall is widely known for his viral morning routine videos, where he wakes up at 4 am, dunks his face in ice water, and sprints outside. Meanwhile, IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., is famous for his dramatic streams and unpredictable antics.

Speed dominated from the start as they raced along a 50-yard track they marked on the grass.

He easily won the first two races. Hall, 29, then insisted on a rematch on pavement, but Speed, 20, still came out on top.

Despite Hall’s protests, a third race was held, and once again, Speed crossed the finish line first.

Hall appeared increasingly frustrated with each loss. After the third race, Speed began to walk away. When Hall asked why he was leaving, Speed replied, “Because I beat you three times.”

Speed even called Hall “Ashton Fraud.”

After losing the fourth and final race, Hall finally accepted defeat. “I got caught in the sauce,” he admitted, adding that he lost “fair and square.”

This real-life race followed a heated moment on Speed’s stream earlier the same day, where Speed accused Hall of dodging him. Hall responded, “This is not going to be a good look for you, brother,” to which Speed fired back, “I promise you, I’mma smoke your sh*t.”

Their race attracted massive attention online. A live stream of the showdown was broadcast on YouTube, with around 300,000 viewers watching at its peak.

  • Mahira Khan breaks silence after being harassed by fans in London

Mahira Khan breaks silence after being harassed by fans in London

Superstar Mahira Khan has finally opened up about the harassment she faced during a promotional event for her film Love Guru in London.

Speaking about the incident on ARY Digital’s show Buzz Launch, Mahira said, “I can usually handle myself and never felt the need for anyone’s help, but at that moment I felt very uncomfortable.”

“I turned back and saw Humayun, upon which Humayun Saeed immediately intervened and brought the situation under control,” she added.

Humayun Saeed also addressed the matter, saying, “If my sister or any woman were in such a situation in front of me, I would definitely come forward and defend her.”

Discussing on-screen pairings, Mahira commented, “Humayun Saeed’s chemistry with Mehwish Hayat and Ayeza Khan looks great, and he always looks good on-screen with Ayesha Khan.”

She also praised a Pakistani cinema legend, saying, “The real ‘love guru’ of the Pakistani showbiz industry is Waheed Murad, who looked like a hero in a true sense.”

Earlier, during a promotional event for Love Guru at the Indo-Pak Supermarket in Ilford, London, Mahira Khan was physically harassed by at least three people. Videos circulating on social media showed chaotic scenes at the venue, where poor management led to a massive crowd losing control.

Sources told The Current that Mahira was harassed by a security guard and two other individuals inside the store. “It happened when she was trying to make her way to the terrace to wave at fans as part of the promotional event,” a source shared.

They added that she appeared visibly shaken and hesitant to continue with the event, especially after the display of Indian flags at the venue during a time of sensitive cross-border relations.

However, the event continued as planned, reportedly because the actors had already been paid for their participation. According to sources, the store paid £5,000 for the appearance, but “She has not taken any money for the appearance. She agreed to attend the event for the film promotion. What happened there was shocking,” said a source close to Mahira.

Despite her distress, Mahira and Humayun were later seen waving at fans from the store’s terrace in videos that surfaced online.

The clips making rounds on social media showed a visibly uncomfortable Mahira struggling to make her way into the store through the crowd.

Sources confirmed that Mahira filed a protest with the event organisers and expressed her disappointment and shock.

According to reports, a female reporter from a private news channel was also harassed during the same event and filed a police complaint.

  • FACT CHECK: Did Turkish company maintain crashed Air India plane?

FACT CHECK: Did Turkish company maintain crashed Air India plane?

After an Air India flight crashed on the afternoon of June 12, Indian media quickly claimed that a Turkish company was responsible for maintaining the aircraft that went down in Ahmedabad. As has happened with much of the outlandish claims made by Indian media, this too has been proven to be false.

On Thursday, an Air India plane headed to London crashed moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad, resulting in the tragic deaths of 241 passengers on board and dozens more on ground.  Remarkably, one passenger survived the crash.

Following the accident, Indian social media, including controversial Indian television host Arnab Goswami, began airing the claim that the aircraft had been serviced and maintained under the supervision of Turkish company Turkish Technic.

However, a report by Anadolu’s Fact-Check has dismissed the claim as baseless.

After the crash, misleading videos and images also began circulating on social media in India, falsely linking the aircraft to Turkish Technic. Many of these posts claimed that the company had serviced the ill-fated plane.

According to Anadolu’s Fact-Check, the aircraft involved in the accident was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. In contrast, the images being shared showed Boeing 777 aircraft inside Turkish Technic’s maintenance hangars.

A post by Turkish Technic on Instagram, dated April 9, confirmed that the company’s maintenance agreement with Air India is limited to Boeing 777 aircraft only, which are serviced in Istanbul.

Reports also confirmed that the agreement between Air India and Turkish Technic covers only Boeing 777 planes and that there have been no issues reported with the maintenance of those aircraft.
