Iraqi man who burned Holy Quran killed in Sweden

An Iraqi refugee in Sweden who repeatedly desecrated the Holy Quran in 2023, sparking outrage in Muslim countries, has been shot dead in the south of Stockholm, investigators said Thursday, with Sweden’s prime minister suggesting “a foreign power” might have been involved.

Prosecutor Rasmus Oman confirmed that an investigation has been opened into the murder of 38-year-old Salwan Momika,  leading to five arrests.

“We’re in the very early stages… there’s a lot of information gathering. Five people have been detained suspected of involvement in the crime,” Oman said.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told reporters at a press conference: “I can guarantee that the security services are deeply involved in this because there is obviously a risk that there is also a link to foreign power.”

A Stockholm court was set to rule on Thursday whether Momika, a Christian Iraqi, was guilty of inciting ethnic hatred but said it has postponed its ruling until February 3 as a result of his death.

Police responded late Wednesday to a call about a shooting in an apartment building in the city of Sodertalje, where Momika lived.

They found a man who had been shot and who later died in hospital, a police statement said.

Several media outlets reported that the shooting had been broadcast live on social media, videos of which are circulating all over the internet.

The newspaper Aftonbladet said that the attacker was able to gain entry into the building through the roof.

In August, Momika and fellow protester Salwan Najem were charged with “agitation” against Muslims on four occasions in the summer of 2023.

According to the charge sheet, the two desecrated the holy book, including burning it, while making derogatory remarks about Muslims — on one occasion outside a Stockholm mosque.

“I’m next on the list,” Najem wrote on X after Momika’s death, telling Swedish media that he had received death threats.

Relations between Sweden and several Middle Eastern countries were strained by the pair’s activities.

Iraqi protesters stormed the Swedish embassy in Baghdad twice in July 2023, starting fires within the compound on the second occasion.

In August of that year, Sweden’s intelligence service Sapo raised its threat level to four on a scale of five after the Quran burnings had made the country a “prioritised target”.

The Swedish government condemned the desecrations while repeating the Western narrative of constitutionally protecting freedom of speech and assembly laws in the country.

    ‘Don’t want to harm’ Sweden

Speaking to Aftonbladet in April 2023, Momika had said he never intended thr desecration to cause any trouble in Sweden, where he had lived since 2018.

“I don’t want to harm this country that received me and preserved my dignity,” he said.

In October 2023, the Swedish Migration Agency revoked his residency permit, citing false information in his original application, but he was granted a temporary one as it said there was an “impediment to enforcement” of a deportation to Iraq.

The month before, Iraq had requested his extradition over one of the burnings.

In March 2024, Momika left Sweden to seek asylum in Norway, telling AFP that Sweden’s freedom of expression and protection of human rights was “a big lie”.

Norway deported him back to Sweden several weeks later.

Before arriving in Sweden, Momika’s social media accounts tell a story of an erratic political career in Iraq.

It included links to a Christian armed faction during the fight against the Islamic State, the creation of an obscure Syriac political party, rivalries with influential Christian paramilitaries and a brief arrest.

He also joined the massive anti-corruption protests that gripped Iraq in late 2019, which were met with a crackdown that killed over 600 people nationwide.

In October 2023, a Swedish court convicted another man of inciting ethnic hatred with a 2020 Quran burning, the first time the country’s court system had tried anyone on charges of desecrating Muslim’s holy book.

Prosecutors have previously said that under Swedish law, the burning of the Quran can be seen as a critique of the book and religion and thus be protected under free speech.

However, depending on the context and statements made at the time, it can also be considered “agitation against an ethnic group”.

  • Did Mona Lisa Bhonsle make 10 crores at Maha Kumbh?

Did Mona Lisa Bhonsle make 10 crores at Maha Kumbh?

Mona Lisa Bhonsle, also known as Moni, became a viral sensation at this year’s Maha Kumbh festival in India.

She is a garland seller from Indore with striking facial features and was seen selling Rudraksha and pearl garlands at the festival in Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad.

With her newfound fame, however, came challenges. Bhonsle was chased by attendees to her tent, and some even harassed her, forcing her to take pictures despite her refusal.

Reports on social media claimed that Bhonsle earned a staggering INR 10 crores by selling garlands at the festival in just 10 days.

Moni, however, has denied these claims. “If I earned so much money, then why would I live here and why would I sell garlands?” she told an Indian publication.

  • Justice Mansoor Ali Shah should be Prime Minister: Absar Alam

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah should be Prime Minister: Absar Alam

Senior journalist Absar Alam, while appearing on the Samaa News Podcast series on January 29, stated that Justice Mansoor Ali Shah should become the Prime Minister of Pakistan, citing his “expertise in every field.”

“The position of Chief Justice of Pakistan would have been too small for a man of his [Justice Mansoor] stature. He is a diamond in our society. He should become the PM of Pakistan, join a political party, or make his own,” he said.

“After hearing his recent speech, I realised that the man has expertise in fields like science, climate change, public transport, waste management, solid waste management, agriculture, finance, and even Islamic Sukuk bonds. He knows what Malaysia is doing, what Rwanda is doing… He has expertise in every subject of the world. And the same man has such brilliant English that he should be our leader,” he added.

Alam shared his opinion when criticising Pakistani authorities’ lack of seriousness in addressing the Chinese government’s concerns about their citizens’ safety in Pakistan.

“This is highly unfortunate because the people responsible for protecting foreign interests in our country are mostly focused on politics. In fact, everyone who is responsible for their jobs in Pakistan is focused on everything except their required job,” he said.

“We should have such a Hollywood-like leader who has expertise in every matter except the one job he is getting paid for by taxpayers’ money. Our Generals, who have now gone back home, became foreign policy experts; our judges became administration and technology experts; our politicians kept increasing their salaries; our journalists, anchors, and YouTubers kept lying to spread hate…” opined the senior journalist.

Absar Alam was referring to Justice Mansoor Ali Shah’s recent address on January 28 at a ceremony in Karachi, where he talked about multiple issues, including climate change and Islamic banking in Pakistan.

The event was organised by AlBarka Forum for Islamic Economy, a think tank specialising in Islamic economy. In a post shared by the AlBarka Foundation on its Instagram page, the caption stated: “During the opening ceremony, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Senior Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, intersected the concepts of climate change, climate justice and Islamic finance in his presentation, highlighting that water security is the first concern need to be faced, followed by agriculture and food security, disaster risk reduction, health, and urban planning and infrastructure as listed by The National Adaptation Plan.”

  • ‘Donald Trump quite likely to build Trump Tower in Pakistan,’ says Umar Cheema

‘Donald Trump quite likely to build Trump Tower in Pakistan,’ says Umar Cheema

Prominent journalist Umar Cheema stated on Wednesday that United States (US) President Donald Trump might build the Trump Tower in Pakistan, given the US President’s ally, Gentry Beach’s, interest in investing in Pakistan.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Cheema, while discussing the US President’s ally’s interest in revolutionising the real estate sector in Pakistan, observed that Trump, through Beach’s investment, is quite likely to build the Trump Tower in Pakistan, as many countries, including Dubai, have such a tower.

The journalist opined that constructing the Trump Tower in Pakistan would be a good deal for the incumbent government as it would bring significant investment to the country, adding that Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif’s government would be able to convey to the masses that they had engaged the US President.

A high-level US investment delegation, led by Beach, is in Pakistan for a two-day visit aimed at strengthening economic and bilateral ties.

The visit comes shortly after the new US administration took office and is being seen as a significant diplomatic and economic breakthrough. During their stay, the delegation is set to finalise investment deals, opening avenues for collaboration in key sectors, including energy, technology, and infrastructure.

Cheema dismissed the PTI supporter’s claim that the Texas hedge fund manager has no relation with the US President. “He [Gentry Beach] is the Trump’s fundraiser,” he said.

The journalist further revealed that the US billionaire investor is very close to Trump’s family, adding, “Beach was the class fellow of the US President’s son, Donald Trump Jr., at the University of Pennsylvania[…]Beach is the business partner of Trump Jr, and both also hunt together.”

Beach, while speaking to a private news outlet on Wednesday, discussed President Donald Trump’s aide Richard Grenell’s recent tweets regarding former premier Imran Khan’s release.

“Richard Grenell is one of the finest Americans that I have ever met. He gets more done in a week than most people do in a year. He is absolutely effective, incredibly smart and humble. I am in awe of Ambassador Grenell. I would say I do believe he may have been misled around some of these issues by certain individuals,” he said.

Beach further claimed that there is a lobby in the US that spends $2 to $3 million per month “related to Imran Khan”. “I am not an expert on these things, but I do believe that Grenell has a better understanding of the true evidence today than before. He has a better understanding now,” he added.

Following the crackdown by security forces on PTI demonstrators on November 26 in Islamabad, former US ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account in support of Imran Khan, writing, “Free Imran Khan!”.

Meanwhile, President Trump’s close aide has reportedly deleted many of his posts supporting Khan.
