Deadly Los Angeles wildfires threaten Hollywood

A new wildfire broke out late Wednesday in the Hollywood Hills area of Los Angeles after other fires in the region killed at least five people, destroyed hundreds of homes and forced authorities to issue evacuation orders to more than 100,000 people. City authorities reported “zero containment” due to dry, hurricane-force winds.

At least five people have been killed in wildfires rampaging around Los Angeles, officials said Wednesday, with firefighters overwhelmed by the speed and ferocity of multiple blazes.

Up to 1,500 buildings have burned in fires that have broken out around America‘s second biggest city, forcing over 100,000 people from their homes.

Hurricane-force winds whipped up fireballs that leapt from house to house in the upmarket Pacific Palisades area, incinerating a swathe of California‘s most desirable real estate favored by Hollywood celebrities.

On Wednesday evening, a new fire erupted in the Hollywood Hills, just a few hundred meters (yards) from the storied Hollywood Boulevard, sparking an evacuation order for the world’s entertainment capital.

Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said his crews were overwhelmed by the scale and speed of the unfolding disasters.

“We’re doing the very best we can. But no, we don’t have enough fire personnel in LA County between all the departments to handle this,” he said.

The fire raging in Pacific Palisades had consumed around 16,000 acres (6,500 hectares) as of Wednesday afternoon, taking 1,000 homes and businesses with it.

A separate 10,600-acre (4,300-hectare) fire was burning around Altadena, north of the city, where flames tore through suburban streets.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said five people were known to have perished, with more deaths feared.

“Remember, this is still a very fluid situation, there’s zero containment on this fire. I’m really praying we don’t find more, but I don’t think that’s going to be the case,” he said.

A firefighting helicopter drops water as the Sunset Fire burns in the Hollywood Hills with evacuations ordered on January 8, 2025 in Los Angeles, California.

William Gonzales got out alive, but his Altadena home was gone.

“We have lost practically everything; the flames have consumed all our dreams,” he told AFP.

Pasadena fire chief Chad Augustin said up to 500 buildings had been lost to the flames.

He hailed the bravery of first responders who had saved lives.

“Our death count today would be significantly higher without their heroic actions,”Augustin told reporters.

Vicious gusts pushed the flames, whipping red-hot embers hundreds of yards (meters) and sparking new spot fires faster than firefighters could quell them.

Late Wednesday, a fire began in Runyon Canyon in the heart of Hollywood, close to historic sites like the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, the Walk of Fame and the El Capitan Theatre, as well as the AFP bureau.

An evacuation order was put in place for a number of streets, all the way down to Hollywood Boulevard, as firefighters took to the skies to dump water on the blaze.

“There is no time to delay,” Margaret Stewart of LAFD said.

“We do not want people stuck. We want everyone safely exiting, get in your vehicles, grab your friend who doesn’t have a car, and head south.”

The sudden eruption created gridlock on Hollywood’s streets, hampering efforts by people who live in the area — a mixture of ritzy homes and rent-controlled apartments — to leave.

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power chief executive Janisse Quinones pleaded with people to save water after hydrants in Pacific Palisades ran dry.

President-elect Donald Trump took to his social media platform on Wednesday to claim — wrongly — that the lack of water was the result of the state’s environmental policies.

In fact, much of Los Angeles’ water comes from the Colorado River, and farming — rather than residential use or firefighting — takes the lion’s share of all water that flows into Southern California.

US President Joe Biden cancelled a trip to Italy this week to instead focus on the federal response to the fires.

“We’re doing anything and everything, and as long as it takes to contain these fires,” Biden earlier told reporters.

Having razed perhaps hundreds of multimillion-dollar homes, the Pacific Palisades fire looked set to be one of the costliest blazes on record.

AccuWeather said it estimated up to $57 billion of losses had been caused in the multiple disasters.

More than 300,000 households were without electricity in the region, according to the website outage.us. Utilities in California frequently de-energize lines during high winds to minimize the risk of new fires.

Wildfires are part of life in the US West and play a vital role in nature.

But scientists say human-caused climate change is altering weather patterns.

Southern California had two decades of drought that were followed by two exceptionally wet years, which sparked furious vegetative growth — leaving the region packed with fuel and primed to burn.

Meteorologist Daniel Swain said the fierce winds — which have gusted up to 100 miles (160 kilometers) an hour — are stronger than the usual seasonal Santa Ana winds, but are not unexpected.

“The winds are the driver, but the real catalyst… is this incredible antecedent dryness,” he said.

“The lack of rain and the anomalous warmth and dryness that we’ve seen the past six months. That’s something that we haven’t seen in records going back to the 1800s.”

  • Gauri Khan wanted SRK’s films to flop? Her surprising confession will shock you.

Gauri Khan wanted SRK’s films to flop? Her surprising confession will shock you.

Behind every Bollywood blockbuster is an anxious wife secretly wishing for a flop! Gauri Khan’s candid confession about SRK’s early career will leave you both surprised and amused.

Shah Rukh had the love of his life, Gauri Khan, supporting him even before he started his acting journey. Interestingly, Gauri Khan revealed that she never prayed for her husband’s success in films, even though her family did.

Gauri admitted that she wasn’t interested in Shah Rukh doing films initially and didn’t enjoy his early success.

“I was not interested in him doing films… which was why I never enjoyed his initial success,” she said on interview.

“Surprisingly, my family, who were initially against him joining films, began to support his career by praying and watching his movies,” she remembered, adding that her family watched all his films. “I, on the contrary, never hoped and prayed that he did well. My involvement in his career was zero.”

It was only after nine years in the industry that Gauri became more aware of Shah Rukh’s work and the success of his films. She credited her close friends, who were more connected to films, for helping her understand the industry. Over time, Gauri realized how much films meant to Shah Rukh and appreciated his desire to be technically involved in filmmaking.

Gauri also confessed that she wanted Shah Rukh’s films to flop so they could move back to Delhi, as she found it difficult to adjust to Mumbai: “I kept wishing that all his films flopped and we went back to Delhi. I didn’t care whether his Deewana or Baazigar did well. I didn’t see his movies. I haven’t seen all his films. If he had done about 25-30 films, I must have seen only half of them. I had no interest at all in what he was doing.”

Despite receiving acting offers due to Shah Rukh’s rising stardom, Gauri knew that acting wasn’t the right path for her and turned down the opportunities.

She explained, “I got a few film offers but it was so silly that just because your husband is into films, you automatically get acting offers. It made no sense at all. Just because you have the opportunity, you can’t do something you’re not inclined towards. And Shahrukh would never let me act in any case. He is too possessive of me. He would rather die a million deaths than let me act or do even a small role in films.”

Here is how much alimony Chahal will pay to Dhanashree Verma

The recent separation of Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and his wife Dhanashree Verma has led to him potentially paying a hefty amount in alimony payments.

The couple unfollowed each other on Instagram, while Chahal also deleted all of his pictures with his wife. Indian media has confirmed that reports of divorce between Chahal and Dhanashree are true.

While the exact details of their financial settlement remain private, the case highlights the evolving nature of divorce settlements in India.

Alimony in India is based on different factors and varies depending on the financial status of both partners. In this case, both are financially independent and the longer the marriage lasts, the more alimony there is.

They got married in 2020, so the alimony could be in moderate proportion, and Dhanashree Verma can even deny the need for alimony if she wants.

However, ZeeNews reported that Chahal could allocate 20 to 30 per cent of his annual income based on court decisions and current net worth.

Dhanashree recently shared an Instagram story about the rumours of her separation from her husband and cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal, and she also reacted strongly to the criticism of her character by online trolls.

In a note shared on Instagram on Wednesday evening, Dhanashree wrote, “The past few days have been extremely difficult for me and my family. The most disturbing are the posts that are devoid of facts; my character has been insulted through the hatred spread by this trolling.”

She further wrote, ” I have worked hard for years to build my name and reputation. My silence is not a sign of weakness but a sign of strength. Negative things spread easily on online platforms. The truth does not need any explanation.”

Dhanashree, a dentist-turned-dancer and choreographer, participated in the popular reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.

Dhanashree and Chahal got engaged on August 8, 2020, and got married on December 22, 2020, at a private ceremony in Gurgaon.

51 Pakistanis deported from seven countries

51 Pakistani nationals have arrived in Karachi after being deported from seven countries over the last 24 hours.

Deportees who arrived in the port city came from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.

Immigration authorities informed the media that 33 people arrived from Saudi Arabia and 14 from Iraq.

However, almost all of the deportees were travelling on emergency passports except two who travelled on their original documents.
Additionally, one Pakistani each was deported from Oman, Zambia, and Qatar in the past one day.

At the same time, 30 passengers were offloaded from international flights at the Jinnah International Airport in the provincial capital late on Tuesday night  after their travel documents showed irregularities.

Geo News reported that among those offloaded were 11 passengers who were travelling on business and visit visas to China and Malaysia, whils four others who were going to Oman on family visit visas, were also barred from boarding the plane. One traveller intending to go to Uganda on a visit visa was also offloaded.

Other offloaded individuals were bound to go to Saudi Arabia — five on Umrah visas, two on business visas, and two on work visas while one passenger was travelling on a personal visit visa.

Immigration authorities at the airport said that these people were stopped from travelling abroad because of discrepancies in hotel bookings, travel funds and other logistical shortcomings.

According to officials, the offloaded passengers were going to fall victim to human smuggling, adding that most of the detained citizens have been transferred to the Anti-Human Smuggling Circle for further investigation.

Meanwhile, some people were allowed to go back home.

On Monday it was reported that 63 Pakistanis were deported from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Malaysia.
Among the deportees, 29 were sent back to the country from Saudi Arabia. Four of them were involved in begging, 15 in fraudulent activities and 10 others for overstaying their visas.

16 other Pakistani nationals were deported from Malaysia as prohibited immigrants. On the other hand, 11 were sent back from Iraq after issuance of emergency passports due to illegal entry and overstaying.

Additionally, four Pakistani nationals were deported from the UAE when their visas expired.

This is not the first time Pakistanis were deported from countries abroad due to the said issues.

It is not allowed,” Consul General of UAE in Karachi Dr Bakheet Ateeq Al Rumaithi warned in a recent interview.

Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana has secured the first hat-trick of 2025 in the second ODI against New Zealand.

  • Is Ananya Panday thinking about marriage? Here’s what she wants…

Is Ananya Panday thinking about marriage? Here’s what she wants…

Bollywood actress Ananya Panday isn’t just making waves in Bollywood but is also thinking about her future and marriage plans.

In an interview with Forbes India, the Kho Gaye Hum Kahan actress shared her aspiration for the next five years, saying she dreams of a settled life with “love, marriage, children and lots of dogs”.

When asked about her goals, Panday said, “Hopefully, married with a happy, settled home… planning babies and lots of dogs.”

To a question about her professional goals, the actress said she saw herself at the top of her game. “There’s always competition, but right now, I’m focusing on working and getting better at my craft.”

It may be noted that Ananya Panday has revealed her future plans amid rumours that she is dating actor Walker Blanco. Speculations regarding the romance had begun after Blanco posted a heartfelt birthday message for her last year.

Neither of the two has, however, confirmed the relationship publicly.

Ananya Panday has starred in films and series including Kho Gaye Hum Kahan, Call Me Bae and CTRL.

Earlier,  according to Indian news website, Pinkvilla’s sources, Ananya and Ishaan have called it quits after being together for 3 long years. “The two bonded well on the sets of Khaali Peeli and that led to the beginning of a new journey. However, after living their lives together for 3 years, they have decided to finally end their relationship. It has been a mutual call and the things have ended on a positive note. The two will continue to be cordial going forward,” revealed a source close to the couple.

The source insists that the two might even do a film together if an offer comes their way and are handling the breakup with maturity. “It’s all fine for them on the friendship front, and they have parted ways on a good note. They realised that their way of looking at things was a little different from each other and hence the decision,” the source concluded.

Earlier, Ananya Panday spoke to The Times Of India about her close friendship with peers Sara Ali Khan and Janhvi Kapoor, sharing that these two were her closest friends. The ‘Dreamy Girl’ actress revealed she liked Sara and Janhvi because the three of them have always looked out for each other.

“It’s really good to have supportive contemporaries, we all know there’s heavy competition,” Ananya said, adding that she agrees with Sara’s comment about how only fellow actors can understand each other.

Interestingly, just a month back, Ishaan and Ananya were spotted together being the comfortable self at Shahid Kapoor’s birthday bash.
