  • 15-year-old girl killed two in latest US school shooting

15-year-old girl killed two in latest US school shooting

A 15-year-old female student was identified by police as the assailant who opened fire Monday at a school in the US state of Wisconsin, where a fellow student and teacher were killed and the suspected shooter was found dead.

Shon Barnes, police chief in the state capital Madison, told a press briefing that three people had died and seven others were wounded at the Abundant Life Christian School, a private Christian school with about 400 students.

“The shooter has now been identified as (a) 15-year-old,” Barnes told reporters, identifying the minor by name.

“She was a student at the school, and evidence suggests she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” he added.

Barnes said a second-grade student called emergency services to report the shooting shortly before 11:00 am local time (1700 GMT).

Of the six wounded victims who were hospitalized, two students remain in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, two people are in stable condition, and two have been discharged from hospital, the police chief said.

A handgun was recovered at the scene, Barnes said, adding that the suspect’s family was cooperating with the police investigation.

“We are still working to determine a motive,” he said.

One witness interviewed by local media said they had heard two gunshots during the attack.

“We heard them and then some people started crying and then we just waited until the police came and then they escorted us out to the church,” said the child, who was not identified.

Monday’s violence is the latest in a long line of school shootings in the United States, where guns outnumber people and attempts to restrict access to firearms face perennial political deadlock.

Underlining the commonplace nature of mass shootings, the police chief said some medical personnel responding to Abundant Life came directly from training for such an event.

“I think we can all agree that enough is enough,” Barnes told reporters.

“We have to come together to do everything we can to support our students, to prevent press conferences like these from happening again and again and again.”

US President Joe Biden condemned the shooting as “shocking and unconscionable” and said the tragedy underscored yet again the need for tighter gun laws.

“It is unacceptable that we are unable to protect our children from this scourge of gun violence. We cannot continue to accept it as normal,” he said in a statement.

“We need Congress to act. Now.”

    Horror of school shootings

Female US school shooters are exceedingly rare, but women and schoolgirls have been identified as assailants over the years.

“Most school shooters are male and in their teens or early 20s. However, over the last 50 years, at least four planned school shootings have involved female attackers,” David Riedman, founder of the K-12 School Shooting Database, wrote last year.

The shooting happened in the final week of classes before students head to the Christmas holidays, said Barbara Wiers, the school’s director of elementary and school relations.

“This has obviously rocked our school community,” she told a media briefing, saying it was not yet decided if students would return before the year-end break.

This year, there have been at least 487 mass shootings — defined as a shooting involving at least four victims, dead or wounded — across the United States, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

At least 16,012 people have been killed in firearms violence in the United States this year, not including suicides, GVA reported Monday.

In September a 14-year-old boy killed four people, including two students, at a high school in the state of Georgia, before being taken into custody.

Nineteen students and two teachers were shot dead in May 2022 when an 18-year-old gunman stormed their Uvalde, Texas elementary school and opened fire.

Diljit Dosanjh slams poor management, refuses to perform in India again

The world-renowned Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh has announced that he will no longer perform in India.

Dosanjh put on an electrifying, houseful concert in Chandigarh on Saturday but surprised his fans when he revealed, “I will not do any shows in India in the future.”

He explained that his decision was made in light of poor infrastructure and lack of proper arrangements for concerts in the country. Dosanjh also urged the authorities to improve facilities, emphasising the rapid growth of the concert industry.

“I want to tell the authorities that they do not have proper facilities for live shows here. This is a major income-generating industry, with many people relying on it. Please consider it,” he said, adding that the Chandigarh administration should focus on improving infrastructure rather than disturbing singers and artists.

He further stated, “I will not perform shows in India until the stage is placed in the centre of the concert ground.”

“In the future, I will make sure the stage is in the middle so that fans are surrounding me. Until that happens, I will not perform in India. I urge the administration to prioritise improving the infrastructure.”

Diljit Dosanjh has also performed in numerous concerts outside India, where his fans flock in large numbers.

According to reports, Diljit earned 234 crore Indian rupees from concerts in North America between May and July this year.

  • No more bike stunts on New Year

No more bike stunts on New Year

Lahore police is gearing up to arrest young bikers performing stunts around the city during the hyper-active New Year and Christmas celebrations.

Dawn reports that Lahore police have identified around 55 “hotspots”, also called “death points”, where groups of youngsters perform stunts and one-wheeling on motorcycles, leading to accidents and fatal injuries.

The roads identified by the city operation police include the stretch from Punjab University New Campus to Thokar Niaz Baig on Canal Road, Gulberg’s Main Boulevard, Jail Road, The Mall, Cavalry Bridge and some main roads of the DHA.

On festive occasions, like Christmas and New Year, many youngsters lose their lives while others suffer permanent disabilities after indulging in these potentially fatal activities.

The youth get help from mechanics to modify their bikes and perform stunts while riding a zigzag, sometimes lying flat on their two-wheelers or standing on them and even leaving the handle.

During a recent meeting,  police officials devised a robust security and enforcement plan to tackle the menace of one-wheeling and other bike stunts.

While talking to Dawn, DIG Operations said, “We have pinpointed a total of 55 hotspots across the city, using advanced technology and data science to implement targeted interventions against such deadly practices.”

    Hotspots

These hotspots include four areas in the City Division, eight in Civil Lines, five in Cantonment, 16 in Model Town, and six in Iqbal Town Division.

Outlining the plan Faisal Kamran said that 1,679 officers and personnel will be deployed in addition to routine police force to monitor these hotspot regions.

The contingent of the special forces includes six SPs, 22 SDPOs, and 83 SHOs, who will be on duty till the end of December this year.

The DIG further said that additional checkpoints and enhanced patrolling will also be conducted as part of the plan to curb these bikers.

Moreover, Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) cameras will also be used to monitor the roads already identified by the police in real-time to check bike stunts.

In the longer run, the police intend to initiate legal action against facilitators or mechanics who modify bikes for such dangerous stunts for the youth.

“Mechanics involved in bike alterations that enable youngsters to do stunts will also face strict consequences, including arrest and detention,” Faisal Kamran warned while adding that the recurrent offenders will be required to provide surety bonds to ensure compliance.

The DIG appealed that the parents should keep a check on their children to prevent them from engaging in dangerous activities.

He urged citizens to report such activities and the facilitators (mechanics, etc) to the police through the 15 Helpline.

Reportedly, on some of these roads, adventurous youngsters riding modified 125cc bikes set a target of crossing 200km per hour speed, which could either result in death or a lifelong injury.

  • Trump’s aide calls for Imran Khan’s release, tweets tagging Geo News

Trump’s aide calls for Imran Khan’s release, tweets tagging Geo News

US President-elect Donald Trump’s recent nominee for Presidential Envoy for Special Missions, Richard Grenell, tagged a Geo News Story on X (formerly Twitter) that referred to him as “homosexual” and called for the release of founder Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan.

On December 16, Richard Grenell posted a screenshot of a Geo News Urdu article with a headline translated in English as “Homosexual Richard Grenell appointed as Trump’s envoy” with a caption: “I’ll say it again, @geonews_urdu: Free Imran Khan.”

    1734418942-KN50XMEAZK.jpg

Expectedly, the post went viral, with most PTI supporters and leaders appreciating the US official for raising his voice in support of the former Prime Minister.

Former US congressman Matt Gaetz also reposted Grenell’s post with the caption: “Free Imran Khan!”

Grenell previously served as ambassador to Germany during Trump’s first administration, special presidential envoy for Serbia and Kosovo peace negotiations, and acting director of national intelligence.

National Public Radio (NPR) reported Grenell for having a reputation of “sometimes employing a contentious approach to diplomacy that rankled allies and the foreign policy establishment in Washington.”

Richard Grenell had previously voiced his support for Imran Khan on his official X page, and when he got nominated by Donald Trump, PTI supporters rejoiced on social media, congratulating him on his new title.

Social media did not hold back after Grenell’s recent post with one user commenting: “Respected Sir Heartiest Congratulations on your new assignment. May you get succeed and achieve your goals & aims Ameen. Imran Khan is our Leader and he is in Adyalla Jail for the last 18 months in fake frivolous cases like @realDonaldTrump. Thank you so much for raising voice for IK [sic].”

While netizens speculate the reason why Richard’s tweet was specifically aimed at Geo News, PTI leader Azhar Mashwani, who is in self-imposed exile, alleged, “@geonews_urdu is Pakistan’s largest traditional news network, fully allied to the brutal regime in the country.”

“Interestingly, many of these traditional media outlets in the country were recipients of substantial USAID media-buying funds between 2008 and 2014 under the Kerry-Lugar-Berman Act. Even more interesting is that the KLB Act was the brainchild of then-Senator Joe Biden, who became Vice President shortly before the bill was passed. For those that think Biden (and his admin) were agnostic on Pakistan, there is ample evidence of his clear political preferences in the country. Past 3 years is a testament to it [sic],” he added.

Another PTI leader Zulfi Bukhari reposted with the caption: “250 million people chant the same. Free Imran Khan!”

Former President Arif Alvi wrote: “A very positive statement. The same feelings are resonating throughout the world. #Free_Imran_Khan. @ImranKhanPTI has spent more than 500 days in jail on false, fabricated & fictitious charges starting with the ignominious regime change, destruction of civil liberties, mandate reversal, fascist torture & subversion of constitution & judiciary by the deep state in Pakistan.”

In an unofficial meeting of the board, the ICC approved the hybrid model, and an agreement in principle was reached between Pakistan and India regarding it.

If the hybrid model is accepted, the ICC will also allow Pakistan to host the Women’s Tournament after 2027, while the issue of the knockout matches for the 2026 T20 World Cup will be decided later.

Earlier, Indian media claimed that Champions Trophy 2025 will be held under the hybrid model, and the International Cricket Council (ICC) and India have accepted all the conditions of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

With the approval of the hybrid model, the Champions Trophy matches will be held in Pakistan and Dubai. An unofficial meeting of the board was held in which the ICC approved the hybrid model, and an agreement, in principle, was reached between Pakistan and India, Indian media claims this.

  • KP govt confirms Kurram peace jirga talks have not ended

KP govt confirms Kurram peace jirga talks have not ended

Adviser to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister (CM) on Information and Public Affairs Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif on Monday denied reports claiming that the Kurram peace talks concluded without reaching a consensus between the provincial government and tribal leaders.

“The Kurram [peace] jirga is not over [….] The reports regarding the dissolution of jirga are baseless,” clarified the KP government’s spokesperson in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Saif further clarified that the relevant parties requested an additional 24 hours for deliberation regarding the removal of bunkers and collection of weapons.

The statement was given after it was reported on Sunday that the nine-day-long tribal jirga had failed to reach a consensus due to differences with the provincial government, with jirga member Syed Raza Hussain saying that certain points could not be agreed upon.

Clashes between two clans erupted when a convoy comprising of 200 vehicle passengers, while en route to Peshawar in escort, came under attack on November 21 at Lower Kurram area of Manduri Charakhel and Ochat on the Peshawar-Parachinar Highway, leading to 52 casualties and multiple wounded.

This was followed by retaliatory strikes from another tribe, targeting the Bagan Village, in which several individuals were also dead. Subsequently, clashes between the warring clans further escalated.

The deteriorating security situation severely disrupted daily life in Kurram. Food, petrol, and medical supplies are critically low, with residents struggling to access essential services due to road closures.

It merits a mention that the KP district, Kurram, has a long history of tribal warfare. Over the years, the land dispute conflict has involved heavy weaponry and rocket attacks, resulting in thousands of deaths and displacing many families.

On Monday, Barrister Saif underscored the necessity of disarmament and elimination of bunkers as per the provincial cabinet’s decision.

“It is necessary to eliminate bunkers and clear the area of weapons for lasting peace,” Saif said while stressing the need to avoid propaganda on social media platforms.

Acknowledging that the provincial government was aware of the problems faced by the people due to road closures, the provincial government’s spokesperson also said that essential medicines are being delivered to the area via CM’s helicopter.

Noting that the injured were being airlifted to Peshawar, Saif said that CM Gandapur had directed the Food Department to deliver 2,000 metric tonnes of wheat to the Kurram district.

‘I would have done it very well’: Areej Ch on if she played Rubab in KMKT

What if Rubab from ‘Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum had been played by actress Areej Chaudhary instead of Naeema Butt?

During an appearance on Hasna Mana Hai, Areej Chaudhary shared her thoughts on the role, the show’s ending and her experience working in the blockbuster drama.

Tabish Hashmi asked, “Do you think you would have done it well? Have you practiced at home to become Rubab?”

Areej replied, “I know I would have done it well.” Her statement reflects her belief in her abilities as an actor, especially after her standout performance as Natasha.

Tabish Hashmi also addressed the show’s ending, which left many viewers questioning unresolved storylines, particularly regarding Rubab’s track. He asked, “And since there was no closure, many people had complaints like, ‘What happened to it?’ Did you feel the same, like, ‘what happened to it?’”

In response, the Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum actress said, “There’s no Season 2, since the writer had beefed it up so much, I think I’m satisfied with that, there was no need to show it even more. Everyone understood what happened, so the focus on the remaining aspects was more important.”

Earlier, Areej Chaudhry appeared as a guest on ‘Something Haute’ where she talked about her character in the trending drama.

The host, Hassan Choudhry, asked, “What similarities are there between Natasha and you?”

“I could never be her in real life. I may be like Natasha when it comes to appreciating art, but other than that, I don’t like anything about her. I would never do something like that in my life,” she responded.

Talking about the “Humpty Dumpty” reference in the drama, Chaudhry said that she would never want to say such a thing in real life.

“We see these kinds of characters in films and dramas. Did you take inspiration from any specific character?” the host asked.

To which she responded, “No, I didn’t want to do that because, I believe, when you try to copy or understand something by watching someone else, you lose the ability to bring your own touch to it.

I wanted to think about it in my own way. If I were like this [Natasha], what would I do? That’s how I approached it,” she explained.
