Kapoor family’s cringe-fawning over Narendra Modi gets slammed on X

The Kapoor family, known for their iconic Bollywood legacy, met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and what was supposed to be a celebration of Indian cinema turned into an X (formerly Twitter) storm, with many questioning the real reason behind this high-profile meeting.

The meeting, centred on the upcoming Raj Kapoor Film Festival, was intended to honour the legacy of the legendary ‘Showman of Hindi Cinema’ and showcase his films from December 13-15, 2024.

Social media users quickly criticised the meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, placing the Kapoor family at the centre of controversy.

In a video circulating online, members of the Kapoor family shared their experience of meeting the Indian Prime Minister, which many X users criticised as an act of “cringe fawning” over Modi. They questioned why Bollywood stars seem to be getting closer to the government.

Some people pointed out that Bollywood has been making films to please a fan base that judges them for personal things, like their children’s names.

Critics pointed out that Bollywood stars’ close ties with the BJP, a party accused of promoting anti-Muslim views, have fueled much of the backlash. This is especially relevant given the way BJP supporters targeted Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor when they named their son Taimoor. The name, tied to the historical figure Taimur, led to harassment from BJP trolls, who accused the couple of supporting a Muslim legacy. Many see the backlash against the Kapoor family’s meeting with Modi as part of a broader issue concerning Bollywood’s relationship with a government often criticized for its stance on religious minorities.

One X user wrote, “Bollywood stars have actively and consistently grovelled before the Modi govt, producing a series of films that cater to the same fan base who harass them for naming their children Dua or Taimur.
Craven is too mild a descriptor for them.”

Another user asked, “My question is, what’s the effing point of this grovel fest?? Did they get any benefits for the Bollywood industry?? Or, is it just an bhajan programme to inflate the fragile ego of the chai wala?
    ?”

One mocked the meeting, adding, “Actors meeting greatest actor.”

Others pointed out, “Why are these people important enough for the PM to spend time with?? What is their contribution to the world in the grand scheme of things?? ZERO.”

“100 years of Raj Kapoor, so surely the celebrations must be with Modi… that makes total sense,” a user wrote.

While the Kapoor family continues to celebrate Raj Kapoor’s legacy, many people question the authenticity of Bollywood’s ties with the government and the true motives behind these high-profile meetings.

Earlier, the Tamasha actor announced a significant tribute to his late grandfather Raj Kapoor, revealing that the Raj Kapoor Film Festival will run from December 13 to December 15.

The festival will showcase restored versions of 10 iconic films by the legendary actor-filmmaker.

“We are organizing the Raj Kapoor Film festival across India. It’s a great way to celebrate his legacy and preserve his contribution for future generations,” Ranbir said.

Ranbir also talked about his plans of  making a biopic on the late Raj Kapoor, a project that he has been “considering for some time”.

I talk to many people, including director Sanjay Leela Bhansali about how to make a biopic on Mr Raj Kapoor. A biopic is about accurately depicting a person’s life, including their relationships, hardships, and low points, not simply about their achievements.

$250,000 compensation for Chinese nationals killed in Pakistan

The federal cabinet on Wednesday decided to provide compensation of $250,000, equivalent to six crore ninety-five lac eighteen thousand nine hundred seventy-four rupees to Chinese nationals who were killed in Pakistan, The News reported.

Pakistan is working on an online application (App) for Chinese nationals to register themselves and track their movements. China has proposed to establish a joint venture security company, and such a mechanism is currently under consideration, Interior Ministry officials told the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Planning Development.

In a briefing to the National Assembly (NA) panel, the Director of the National Counter Terrorism Authority (Nacta), Col. Usman, told the committee there were 20,000 Chinese nationals in Pakistan, including 2,700 who were working on CPEC projects and remaining on non-CPEC projects as well as those scattered in their individual capacity. The standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the security of Chinese nationals have been updated in recent months in consultation with the Chinese Embassy to provide foolproof security.

Moreover, Nacta Director Colonel Usman informed the participants that a total of 14 terrorist attacks have occurred against Chinese nationals since 2021: two in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), four in Balochistan and eight in Sindh. In these assaults, “20 Chinese were killed and 34 injured, while eight Pakistanis fell dead and 25 were injured,” he added.

Furthermore, Nacta officials said Karachi was the primary target for terrorist organisations to cause damage to Chinese interests, noting, “Hostile Intelligence Agencies (HIAs) are the main director and financier of attacks on Chinese.”

This came after two Chinese engineers returning to work on a project after a holiday in Thailand were dead in October’s airport bombing.

The attack was claimed by the banned outfit Baloch Liberation Army (BLA).

The committee was also informed that in the last ten months, 7,984 intelligence-based operations (IBOs) were conducted, including 3,882 in Punjab, 994 in Sindh, 2,807 in KP, 285 in Balochistan and 16 in ICT. In these operations, 206 terrorists were killed and 1,312 arrested.

“There has been no direct terrorist attack on CPEC projects so far,” the Nacta director clarified.

The committee was told that one per cent of the cost of CPEC projects was dedicated to security purposes, and two special security divisions of the army were deployed to secure CPEC projects. The Special Protection Unit (SPU) and Special Security Units were employed to protect Chinese nationals.

Humaira Bano calls Firdous Jamal ‘munafiq’

Firdous Jamal, a veteran Pakistani actor, is currently facing significant backlash after his controversial statements about women in the entertainment industry, including his fellow actors and even the public.

Among the naysayers is actress Humaira Bano. She recently appeared on a 24 Plus podcast hosted by Uzma Tahir, in which she called out Jamal.

She shared that she was “angry and sad” after coming across the actor’s inappropriate remarks about women working in the showbiz industry.

“I have worked with him in the past, but now I won’t work with him. Firdous Sahab, I am telling you, ap munafiq hai [you are a hypocrite]. You are also a person with low character, just like you think the women in the industry are,” she said, referring to his earlier comments about women in the industry being hypocrites.

“Your sons are also a part of this industry, and you have earned your bread and butter through this industry all your life, which you now abuse,” she condemned the actor.

She further added, “You said that you don’t want to be called a ‘characterless person’, and that’s why you left your house after watching your daughter-in-law on TV, but you are a man with the same low morals and character because you also belong to the same industry. I want our industry people to make Firdous Jamal realise that he is different from us because of his mentality.”

The backlash against Firdous Jamal continues to grow as more actors and industry professionals speak out against his views. His previous comments about Mahira Khan and the “ideal age” for a film heroine have also contributed to the outrage.

  • Will Gen Faiz Hamid’s case impact Imran Khan? Here’s what analysts are saying

Will Gen Faiz Hamid’s case impact Imran Khan? Here’s what analysts are saying

Days after former Director General (DG) Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) General (R) Faiz Hamid was indicted in multiple cases, political analyst Nusrat Javed has stated that former Premier Imran Khan could be questioned in relation to the cases the retired General is facing.

Appearing on Public TV’s Khabar Nashar on Wednesday, Nusrat Javed claimed, “A message has been conveyed to the prisoner [Imran Khan] of Adiala Jail to prepare for questions related to Faiz Hamid’s inquiry.”

Meanwhile, senior journalist Javed Chaudhry, on his YouTube channel, revealed that during his tenure as Prime Minister, Imran Khan had tasked Faiz Hamid, to make up a fake drug case against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah.

Faiz Hamid had collected all information about Rana Sanaullah and placed Anti Narcotic Force (ANF) officials on his route to arrest him from the motorway on the drug case, said the senior journalist, adding, “The case was completely fabricated.”

Meanwhile, Muneeb Farooq, while appearing on Geo News’ Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath on Wednesday night, claimed that the major charges against Faiz Hamid were linked to post-retirement involvement in political activities.

“May 25, 2022 protest was orchestrated after consulting with Faiz Hamid.”

Moreover, he also highlighted that there is a possibility that the former DG ISI’s confessional statements about his alleged involvement in political activities had been recorded or were being recorded with time.

In the same talk show programme, senior journalist Umar Cheema stated that ex-spymaster Gen Faiz Hamid’s case would conclude very soon.

On Tuesday (November 11), Ansar Abbasi claimed that Faiz Hamid was in contact with around 50 politicians- most belonging to PTI.

The sources told Abbasi that prior to the arrest of Faiz Hamid, he was warned more than once by the military authorities about his post-retirement objectionable activities, but he did not stop.

    Gen Faiz Hamid arrest

Lt Gen Faiz Hamid was arrested in August this year on the accusation of abusing his power and raiding a private property development business during his time as head of the ISI, a premier intelligence agency.

He remained the Chief of ISI during the founder PTI Imran Khan’s administration, from 2019 to 2021, and retired early in December 2022.

    ISPR statement

Former director general (DG) of the Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) Lt Gen (r) Faiz Hamid was formally charged with engaging in political activities and misusing his authority as the chief of the country’s premier intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) reported Tuesday.

According to a statement issued by the military’s media wing, the former spymaster was also charged for violating the Official Secrets Act, misusing authority and government resources, and causing wrongful losses to individuals.

“These actions have compromised state security and interests,” ISPR added.

According to the statement, the process of Hamid’s field general court-martial (FGCM) was initiated on August 12, under provisions of the Pakistan Army Act.

Additionally, the military’s media wing said, the former spymaster’s role in creating agitation and unrest, including the May 9 riots, “in collusion with vested political interests”, was also being investigated.

“Lt Gen (r) Faiz Hamid is being afforded with all legal rights as per the law,” it added.

Shah Rukh finally reveals how it felt to work with his sons

Shah Rukh Khan, the king of Bollywood, has always made headlines with his iconic roles, but his latest project brings a personal touch to the screen.

The Dunki actor opened up about his experience of working with his sons Aryan Khan and AbRam in Mufasa: The Lion King, set to release in cinemas on December 20, 2024

In a candid interview with Walt Disney Studios India, Shah Rukh Khan shared how his first collaboration with Aryan in 2019, for The Lion King was a memorable one, but this time, he got to work with both of his children, Aryan, who voices Simba, and AbRam who plays young Mufasa.

“There are a couple of differences, when we did ‘The Incredibles’, dubbing was a little difficult compared to now. But the common thing is that both of them worked with a lot of patience, which I didn’t think they would be able to do at such a young age. But Aryan and Abram both prepared a lot. I think they sat and learned their lines in Hindi.”

“The difference is that when Aryan did it, more people spoke in Hindi, so it was a bit easier for him. But now, after 10-15 years, I think people are more into speaking English. But I’m happy that AbRam worked hard and learned his 20-25 lines, sitting with his sister. So, the whole family was involved.”  The Jawaan actor added.

“Both their voices are amazing; they are still a bit thin, but what excites me is that when I hear Aryan now, his voice sounds very different from The Incredibles. Similarly, I hope that 8-10 years from now, when I hear AbRam’s voice, it will be a great memory for me.”

The Bollywood king also expressed how precious the experience is for him, saying, “It’s a great memory to keep the voices of Aryan and AbRam in a film forever, as a record.”

Earlier, last year after Suhana’s entry into the world of entertainment, Aryan Khan is set to follow in his father Shah Rukh Khan’s footsteps with his directorial debute.

On Tuesday, the eldest son of the superstar shared a snippet of the ad of the upcoming streetwear brand ‘D’YAVOL X?’ which starred the Bollywood Badshah himself.

The project has received praise from social media users, with plenty of applaud for Aryan’s acting and his direction skills, saying that he had a bright future ahead of him.

  • After Noor Jahan, how many scripts did Ali Raza reject?

After Noor Jahan, how many scripts did Ali Raza reject?

In the entertainment industry, where most actors accept any role, rising star Ali Raza rejected 16 scripts to chase only lead roles.

Appearing as a guest on Something Haute hosted by Amana Isanai Haider, the Noor Jahan actor discussed the importance of rejecting roles to clear the way for main leads.

Ali Raza said, “I rejected 16 scripts, after ‘Noor Jahan’, because my debut as a lead was with Kubra Khan I got 16 scripts. I counted them properly and they were lying at my house. I told them, “I am not doing it. I am only doing the main leads.’”

The Mohabbat Gumshuda Meri actor highlighted the importance of setting boundaries in an actor’s career.

“Our actors, especially those in supporting roles, as someone’s friend, or as part of a parallel lead, don’t say ‘no’ to anything. Unless you start saying ‘no’ to certain roles and make it clear that you only want to do main leads, no one will ever offer you a main lead.”
Ali Raza also touched upon other opportunities that came his way, “While I was doing Noor Jahan, I was offered a role from the office for a character that Emmad Irfani eventually played in Jaan-e Jahaan. Musadiq Malik (Noor Jahan director) told me, ‘Look, you’re doing the main lead here. If you do this other role, it will be a second lead.’ I thought it through and decided not to do it. It was actually a scheduling issue because the dates they wanted overlapped with Noor Jahan’s shooting schedule.”

“First, Jaan-e- Jahaan aired, after it concluded, Noor Jahan aired. It was a smart decision on their part to space them out, and I think I also made the right decision by not taking that role,” Raza added.

Aamna Haider Isani then asked, “How was your experience working with Naumaan Ijaz?”

Ali Raza replied, “It was great, though we had limited interaction. But whatever little interaction we had was excellent. Noman Bhai guided everyone, telling us, ‘Don’t deliver the line like this; say it like that.’ He’s incredibly helpful to everyone. The biggest lesson I learned from him was that all actors should give their best performances in a scene, so the scene as a whole turns out perfect.”

Currently Ali Raza is starring in two dramas, DuniyaPur and Iqtidar.

Salma replied, “I was told this is haraam and asked, ‘How can you work with your ex-husband?’ But I’m an actress, so I’d work with anyone. And for our daughter’s sake, I want to put our differences aside and have a good relationship with her father.”

  • ‘Don’t force us to take to streets again’: Gohar calls govt out over protesters’ deaths

‘Don’t force us to take to streets again’: Gohar calls govt out over protesters’ deaths

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has warned the government of further protests if the demand for an inquiry into the alleged deaths of party workers during last month’s Islamabad demonstrations was not met.

“If shots were fired, then responsibility must be assigned. We demand that justice be served and that we get it through this House. Do not force us to take to streets again,” he said while speaking on the floor of the National Assembly.

Barrister Gohar also called on the government to have the “courage to give answers”, saying that people will remember “the echo of bullets for generations”.

The PTI chief was referring to party’s claimed death toll of 12 during violent clashes between workers and law enforcement during formers’ march on the federal capital in the last week of November. Protests had turned ugly amid heavy resistance from the authorities and a subsequent crackdown on PTI workers three days into the march.

With conflicting reports on number of casualties pouring in, the government had reported six deaths, including four law enforcement personnel; whereas the PTI’s claimed toll ranged from 9 to over a whopping 200. No evidence, however, was brought forward by the opposition party to prove its claims as misinformation flooded the internet. The government also maintained that only non-lethal rounds were used to disperse the protesters.

On Wednesday, Barrister Gohar declared that the demonstrators in Islamabad were peaceful and no one carried any weapons. They did not use “guerilla force”, he said in response to government claims of armed protesters attempting to lay siege on the capital.

“They were Pakistani civilians. They did not have any training,” he asserted.

Barrister Gohar also called out defence minister and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) stalwart Khawaja Asif. “You have been in this parliament for more years than my age… is it becoming of you as a leader to say that no bullets were fired?”

“This is not the time for revenge but you could have called for a case to be filed… for an investigation. These are your citizens and our citizens. We say it is our government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa but all the people there are not just PTI’s. People from all ethnicities, all religions, and all political parties live there […] but we do not open fire at anyone,” he added.

Gohar said that despite the government declaring PTI leaders and workers as miscreants, the party did not hit back by calling the PML-N “murderer league”.

‘Pakistan’s love made me famous worldwide,’ says Ertugrul Star

Turkish actor Engin Altan Düzyatan, known for his lead role in the popular historical Turkish drama Ertuğrul Ghazi, recently credited Pakistanis for his global fame.

According to Dawn Images, the actor discussed the popularity of his drama in Pakistan at the Red Sea Film Festival, which was recently held in Saudi Arabia.

He acknowledged that while his drama was appreciated worldwide and was a hit in Turkey, its impact was different after it aired in Pakistan.

“Pakistan has played an important role in my popularity,” he said.

Düzyatan recalled that during the shooting of Ertuğrul Ghazi, the character had a strong influence on him, which took him a long time to shake off.

He also expressed his desire to portray Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey, in a drama or film.

When asked about his invitation to participate in the Saudi Arabian Film Festival, he said, “I was happy and pleasantly surprised when I received the invitation to participate in the festival.”

Ertuğrul Ghazi was broadcast on Pakistan Television (PTV) and set new records of popularity in Pakistan.
