    What are the terms of alleged ‘deal’ for Bushra Bibi’s release? Ansar Abbasi reveals details

    After Imran Khan’s spouse Bushra Bibi was released from Adiala Jail last week, social media is abuzz about an alleged deal between the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the establishment, a claim that the party consistently denies.

    Journalist Ansar Abbasi, in his latest column, wrote that if the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur “is telling his colleagues and party leaders that he has played a role in getting Bushra Bibi released from jail,” then questions will naturally arise.

    Abbasi also stated that after speaking to Gandapur about the possibility of any alleged deal, the CM “avoided the topic.”

    However, KP government spokesperson Barrister Saif confirmed to Abbasi that Gandapur had indeed discussed his role in Bushra Bibi’s release.

    According to Ansar, PTI’s style and politics in the coming days will reveal whether the alleged deal was really struck for getting Khan’s spouse released.

    “Last week, I was told by the establishment that Bushra Bibi would not be re-arrested if the Islamabad High Court decided to release her on bail. A senior PTI leader also told me that Gandapur was told earlier that Bushra Bibi would not be re-arrested if she was granted bail by the courts,” revealed the senior journalist.

    According to Ansar, no concrete evidence exists of any deal; however, he also wrote about the nature of a possible deal, if any.

    “When I asked Gandapur Sahib yesterday whether Tehreek-e-Insaf will continue to target the army and the army chief, his answer was that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is neither against the institution nor against any individual,” wrote Abbasi.

    According to Abbasi’s analysis, “It could be that Tehreek-e-Insaaf will not directly criticize the Army Chief and the economy of Pakistan.”

    Ansar stated that this will be revealed in the coming days because if PTI doesn’t criticise the Army or the economy, then it would mean that the PTI “has made a fundamental change in its policy which aims to avoid a direct fight with the army.”

    If the party continues its policy of targeting the military or the COAS like the last two years, then it would mean there is no deal, according to Asar Abbasi.

    Ansar wrote, “It is a known fact that the economy is the government’s as well as Army Chief’s first priority, and that is why the condition of not politicizing the economy would be put for Bushra Bibi’s release.”

    Punjab govt announces green lockdown in Lahore to tackle smog

    The Punjab government has imposed a “green lockdown” in Lahore, under which restrictions will be imposed on identified smog hotspots.

    The restrictions in designated areas will include barring barbecue joints and marriage halls from operating, while motorcycles and rickshaws will be prohibited.

    The government made the announcement in light of increasing pollution levels in the provincial capital, which continues to rank at the top of the world’s worst air quality index.

    Senior provincial minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, speaking in the Punjab Assembly, announced that 11 areas in Lahore have been identified as smog hotspots, with the Shimla Pahari area being the most affected.

    She affirmed that the “green lockdown” would be imposed starting Thursday (today).

    The director general of the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency, Dr Imran Hamid Sheikh, issued the green lockdown notification.

    Smog hotspots

    Dawn reports that smog hotspots include major roads of the city such as Davis Road, Egerton Road, Durand Road, Kashmir Road, Abbott Road, starting from Shimla Hill to Gulistan Cinema, Empress Road, starting from Shimla Hill to Railway Headquarters, and Queen Mary Road, starting from Durand Road to Allama Iqbal Road.

    Details of green lockdown

    The details of the green lockdown delineate that all construction activities within a one-kilometre radius of Shimla Hill are totally banned. Besides this, the use of commercial generators, Qingqi motorcycle rickshaws and barbecue activities are restricted after 8 pm.

    Food points using charcoal, coal or wood without a proper system of controlling carbon emissions are required to stop functioning right away.

    The Punjab government has directed marquees and marriage halls to close by 10 pm.

    Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) is ordered to conduct wept sweeping to reduce dust in the environment.

    To tackle the traffic jams on roads, encroachments will be removed.

    Moreover, half of office employees at workplaces are informed that they can work from home.

    Green Ring

    Marriyum Aurangzeb revealed that the government is planning to establish a “green ring” around the provincial capital using modern technology as part of the Lahore Green Master Plan.

    This will create a “wall of trees” to reduce emissions and increase oxygen levels.

    She further said every tree would be geo-tagged. To increase the number of trees in industrial areas, the Punjab government will collaborate with industries to expand tree plantations.

    The educational institutions and students will be encouraged to participate in “Green Force” during the smog season.

    Crackdown on environmental violations

    In light of the government’s crackdown on environmental violations, two factories were sealed, and fines of Rs 200,000 were imposed, a senior minister told the Punjab Assembly.

    Furthermore, three brick kilns and four plastic melting plants were demolished, and several food outlets in the Model Town area were sealed due to excessive pollutant emissions.

    Sand-carrying trolleys are advised to use covers now to reduce dust on the roads. 296 vehicles have been fined, a total amount of Rs592,000, and 102 cars were taken into police custody.

    Electric buses

    The Punjab government has also decided to introduce 30 electric buses and e-bikes in Lahore to control the pollution further.

    Punjab Safe Cities Authority is also directed to issue daily e-challans to vehicles emitting smoke and strict action against individuals involved in the burning of waste.

    Previously, Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Maryam Nawaz spoke at a Diwali ceremony earlier today, during which she hinted at writing a letter to the Chief Minister of Indian Punjab on the issue of smog.

    English Test captain, Ben Stokes’ home was robbed by masked individuals who stole jewellery and valuable, rare items.

    The English Test captain has appealed for help on social media from the relevant authorities to recover the items. The robbery occurred on October 17 in Castle Eden while Ben Stokes was playing a Test series in Pakistan.

    In a message he posted on the social networking site X (formerly Twitter) he wrote, “My wife and two children were at home when the robbery took place, but the family remained safe.” Many of the stolen items hold significant emotional value for him and his family, making the losses irreplaceable.

    Stokes shared the details of the incident and pictures of the stolen items on his X account, including an OBE award given in 2019, a Christian Dior handbag, an England cricket signet gold ring, and some bracelets.

    Real estate company bidding for PIA has more than 200 FIRs registered against it

    Only one company, Blue World City, completed requirements to enter the bidding process for a stake in the country’s flag carrier, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

    Blue World City is a real estate project based in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Journalist Shahid Aslam reported that there are “almost 215 FIRs registered against the company owners with charges ranging from murder, illegal weapons, injuring people, and illegal occupation of land.”

    The Privatisation Commission had initially pre-qualified six bidders, including Fly Jinnah, a consortium led by YB Hol¬dings (Pvt) Ltd, Airblue Ltd, a consortium led by Pak Ethanol (Pvt) Ltd, Arif Habib Corporation Ltd, and Blue World City.

    It was also reported that initially, government members did not think of Blue World City, a real estate company, as a serious contender for PIA.

    The Commission shortlisted the six companies after an extensive review based on technical, financial, and documentary requirements, inviting them to proceed with the next stage of the bidding process to start buy-side due diligence.

    However, out of all the six qualified bidders, only one chose to submit “earnest money” prior to final bidding.

    Earnest money is a deposit made to a seller that represents a buyer’s good faith in making a purchase.

    The successful bidder would own a 51 percent stake in PIA and 100 percent of the airline’s share capital, along with management control.

    Business Recorder reported that the owner of Blue World City was also looking into acquiring operations at the Islamabad International Airport, which the government is looking to outsource.

    As part of the IMF conditions for structural reforms, the government decided to privatise PIA as in 2023, it reported a loss of over Rs 75 billion.

    PIA has a debt load of around Rs800 billion ($2.9 billion), and the government has needed to bail it out multiple times over the years.

    Journalist Shahid Aslam also reported that the management of Blue World City also owns the media group Suno TV. According to Aslam, the management of the Blue World City is “run by retired Generals – Arif Waraich and Sajjad Rasool – who served in ISI.”

    Aslam claimed that “Gen (retd) Arif Warraich served as the DG SCT (ISI) in 2014-15 and is now serving at a Director level in Suno TV’s management. While Gen (retd) Sajjad Rasool served as DGS Security & Administration in ISI, and he is also part of the core management team at Suno TV.”

    3. The UN has warned that poorer countries are struggling with a weak global economy and stressed on the need to rethink development strategies. 

    A report from the UN’s trade and development agency, UNCTAD, has evaluated that slow growth, rising debt, and weak investment are widening the gap between developing and wealthier countries.

    Global GDP growth is predicted to be just 2.7 per cent this year and in 2025 – a decrease from an average of 3.0 per cent from 2011 to 2019.

    4. Winter is almost here – which means gas load shedding is about to worsen with the increase in demand. Gas companies SNGPL and SSGCL have asked for a price increase of up to 54 per cent to meet their revenue needs for the current fiscal year (FY25).

    Gas prices are adjusted twice a year after the Oil & Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) makes required estimates, which the government then uses to set consumer prices.

    Ogra will hold a public hearing on November 8 to discuss Sui Southern Gas Company Limited’s (SSGC) request for a rate of Rs669 per unit (mmBtu), a 53.5 per cent increase, whereas hearing for Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited’s (SNGPL) proposed increase of 3.66 per cent is on November 5.

    5. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) aid package has been delayed, and Pakistan’s foreign aid has dropped by 60 per cent to $2.3 billion in the first quarter (July-September) of the current fiscal year. About $5.73 billion was received during the same period last year.

    According to a report published in Dawn newspaper, in its monthly report on Foreign Economic Assistance (FEA) released on Tuesday, the Economic Affairs Division (EAD) said that the country received an annual disbursement of $19.4 billion in the first quarter. 1.3 billion was received against the target.

    These figures show a significant decline from the $3.527 billion received last year when the annual target was $17.6 billion.

I am grateful for that, but this world doesn’t let anyone live peacefully. The world is very cruel. I hope I never see you all again. I am feeling very helpless. Minahil is dead inside.”

    Gold price increases by Rs2,900 per tola to new record

    On Wednesday, gold price rose by a massive Rs2,900 per tola in the local market, reaching Rs287,900.

    The latest rate marks the highest gold price ever recorded in the history of Pakistan.

    Today’s gold price is also Rs2,500 higher than the previous record high, which was observed last week when the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA) quoted gold at Rs285,400 per tola.

    Additionally, the price of ten grammes of gold has also risen in the local market, with APGJSA reporting it at Rs246,828 after a single-day jump of Rs2,486. The price of one gramme of gold in the country now stands at Rs24,682.8.

    Previously, the rate of one gramme of gold in the local market was Rs22,196.

    This increase was not only observed in Pakistan, as international gold prices also saw a rise. The APGJSA reported that on Wednesday October 30 the price of gold rose by $29 internationally, reaching $2,784.

    Meanwhile, silver prices in the country remained stable once again, with the price per tola recorded at Rs3,350.
