‘Stop’: Twitter in no mood to accept Kanwal Aftab’s justifications of domestic violence statement

Tiktoker and Instagram influencer Kanwal Aftab was slammed by social media yesterday when during a Q & A on Instagram, the social media star was asked about advice regarding women coping with domestic violence, to which she had responded by saying more women should try to save their marriages and console their husbands rather than seek divorce.

Founder of Soul Sisters, Kanwal Ahmed, criticised Aftab for encouraging women to fix their abusive husbands by laying the blame of a broken marriage on them.

After backlash to her statement, Aftab had now uploaded a video where she explained that she was not trying to tell women to endure domestic violence, but was encouraging them to try and work through anger rather than begin demanding divorces.

After this video, Aftab wrote in an Instagram story that she was deleting the reel, stating she was not promoting or supporting domestic violence.

Twitter users shared the video on the platform, and criticised the Tiktok star for not understanding the difference between an argument and domestic violence. Couples can have small arguments, and it is perfectly okay to encourage people to work through misunderstandings to overcome them. But domestic violence is a completely different issue, and no woman needs to stick around to endure it to keep her marriage inta

‘There is a huge, huge difference between domestic violence and badtameezi,” one user pointed out.

  • Tiktoker Kanwal Aftab slammed for telling 2.8 million followers that women should fix abusive husbands

Tiktoker Kanwal Aftab slammed for telling 2.8 million followers that women should fix abusive husbands

Tiktoker and Instagram influencer Kanwal Aftab has been slammed by the internet for telling a fan that women should “support” abusive husbands.

During a question and answer session on Instagram, Aftab, who has over 2.8 million followers, was asked by a fan how a woman could cope with an abusive husband when she can’t find a good job.

    The influencer responded:

“Try to support him. Motivate him. Divorce koi rasta nahi hai.”

This harmful advice was slammed by social media users, especially the Founder of Soul Sisters Pakistan, Kanwal Ahmed, who shared a screenshot of Aftab’s answer and schooled the Tiktoker:

“Tiktoker Kanwal Aftab with 18.4 MILLION followers wants women to “support” and “motivate” husbands who abuse them. Struggling to understand if that means cheering them on as they punch her? Or leaving a reminder to do it again when they’re done?”

She also shared another response by Aftab where the user had been asked if she truly meant that women should support husbands while suffering under domestic violence, the Instagram influencer had responded: “Bhain support karien us kay halat ko behtar karne m. Usko sahi karne mein.”

“Women don’t get married to “fix” abusive men. Or to support and validate their violent behaviour,” Ahmed tweeted.

Social media users condemned the display of misogyny and schooled the Tiktoker for making irresponsible statements on a public platform.

    https://twitter.com/amnachaudhry03/status/1671206978356404224?s=20

Why does the burden of fixing the marriage always fall on the woman? Many users had to ask Aftab this

“Why the “sahi karna” burden always fall on women in marriage. Men are grown up individuals! It’s high we need to understand, if a human doesn’t want to be corrected no one can! And there should be a boundary in marriage! And domestic violence is way far from that boundary line!”

It is never the woman’s responsibility to endure something as heinous as domestic violence, and we are also shocked at how our celebrities have no issue in turning a blind eye towards abusive marriages, and consistently tell women to endure rather than leave.

Vasay Chaudhry apologises for ‘overseas Pakistani’ joke on Mazaaq Raat

A clip from the Dunya News comedy show ‘Mazaaq Raat’ featuring model and actress Sarah Neelum went viral on social media.

Neelum was seen mocking overseas Pakistanis for pretending to be well-established and wealthy in Pakistan, while they are actually washing toilets abroad.

The clip received severe backlash from overseas Pakistanis. One user wrote:

“This unknown model on national television is claiming that overseas Pakistanis clean gutters abroad and come to Pakistan to show off by wearing cotton clothes. Meanwhile, these very overseas Pakistanis contribute $32 million through their hard work abroad.”

Actor Shaan Shahid was among the voices who critcised Neelum’s opinion:

“Our overseas Pakistanis .. from all walks of life are our pride .. none should show disrespect .. towards them .. as the country and we the nation owe them much more than respect .. as their sacrifices are beyond words.. much respect.”

The host of the comedy show, Vasay Chaudhry, stepped in to apologise for the tasteless joke by calling it a “ridiculous comment”.

“I want to publicly apologise on behalf of my whole team at #Mazaqraat ,a very stupid,Vile & ridiculous comment was made recently abt overseas’s Pakistani’s by one of the guests in our show which was followed up by an attmepted joke by one of the comedians(again in bad taste).”

The ‘Punjab Nahi Jaugni’ actor further added:

“A formal apology will be aired in tonight’s episode. However , I wanted to personally apologise to all the Pakistanis living abroad. We Love you , even though you might not feel the same at this point, but ” ghalatiaan apnoo say he hoti hain.”

  • Bushra Ansari thinks Pakistanis shouldn’t get too many holidays for Eid

Bushra Ansari thinks Pakistanis shouldn’t get too many holidays for Eid

Veteran actress Bushra Ansari might have a lot of jokes up her sleeve, but this time the nation isn’t laughing with her.

Taking to Instagram, the veteran actress shared a news clip from FHM Pakistan about a government announcement giving Pakistanis five days off for Eid.

The government has not allotted five days for Eid holidays, but today the federal government announced that three holidays will be granted from June 29 till 1st July, 2023 for those working five days a week.

To the ‘Dolly Ki Ayegi Barat’, this wasn’t really good news as she lamented in the post:

“Ma Sha Allah. This nation needs to work day and night to progress in life.. but why do we want to have so many holidays…3 days are more than enough..kaam karlo kaam. Bus chuttiyon ka bahana chahiye.”

The comment did not sit well with many Pakistanis who felt that the actress had an entitled and elitist approach towards people who have to work hard throughout the year to make a living, and deserved time off for relaxation. One user commented:

“Many people have to move from their workplace to hometowns for celebrating Eid. They have to spend hefty amounts in the name of fares. 4 to 5 public holidays will let them celebrate, take rest and meet their beloved ones.”

“Ask those who work 9 to 5”, another user wrote.

  • ‘Saim’s control on the writing and the craft is masterful’: Indian filmmaker Nikkhil Advani on Joyland

‘Saim’s control on the writing and the craft is masterful’: Indian filmmaker Nikkhil Advani on Joyland

It has been months, but yet the impact that Pakistani writer and director Saim Sadiq managed to create with his debut film ‘Joyland’ is still a joy to witness, especially how Indian audiences are praising the filmmaker and the cast for how they tackled a sensitive topic in a beautiful way.

Indian director Nikkhil Advani attended a screening of the film where there was an interactive session with Sadiq, and along with the rest of the cast. Sharing pictures from the full house event, he praised the film as well as Sadiq for his grip on the story and incredible talent as a director:

“We closed the season of Cinema House at G5A foundation with the incredible Joyland. Saim’s control of the writing and the craft is masterful. What bold choices he has made in every department need to be first applauded and then studied.”

He also praised the acting skills of Ali Junejo, Alina Khan, Raasti Farooq:

“Rasti, Alina, and Ali – my god, what performances. We all just sat for a few minutes in stunned silence. Apoorva Charan – more power to you and I know whatever you choose to do in the future is going to be so so special. Thank you.”

The director shared another picture of the completely occupied house, as well as the interactive session held with the cast members

Sadiq, who has been signed with talent agency CAA, had spoken to The Guardian about the inspiration behind his film, when in 2016, he took a semester off from Colombia University where he was completing his Masters, to go back to Lahore and visit theatres. Sadiq recounted how he spent four months visiting exotic theatres, talking to dancers:

“Pakistan has become a bit schizophrenic, it’s a bit bipolar,” revealed Sadiq. “People pray and then they do a lot of things that they’re not supposed to do. There are these weird sort of outlets that people have found to be able to express themselves.”

Speaking on the ban, which was initiated by the Punjab government in 2022, Sadiq said:

“It’s mostly people trying to avoid discomfort that stems from the idea that people have sex. We spend our lives trying to hide our desires and the fact that other people have desires around us.”

  • ‘Her parents were against it’: Naseeruddin Shah opens up about obstacles to marrying Ratna Pathak

Bollywood veteran Naseeruddin Shah is perhaps the closest thing to a creative genius we have seen so far, but the one thing that outshines him is his marriage to fireball actress Ratna Pathak, who is equally witty and blunt about the faults in the industry as him.

However, it wasn’t quite easy for the ‘Mirza Ghalib’ actor to marry his soulmate, as he recently revealed in an interview with Humans Of Bombay. Shah said that it took him seven years to convince Ratna’s parents to allow her to marry him.

“Her parents were against it because I was married before and I was a drug addict. I was an ill-tempered man and all that sort of thing. But, she didn’t pay heed to any of that. In between, she went to drama school for three years. But we were practically living together. So when she moved in with me, it was like the most normal thing in the world.”

Shah revealed that it was love at first sight for him while acting in a play with film maker Satyadev Dubey, and they got closer during rehearsals:

“I just felt I’d like to know this person. Over the process of rehearsals, we got to know each other. I think she also liked what she saw. It’s been a great blessing because we have stood by each other through thick and thin. She has stood by me rather through thick and thin, through very difficult times, and through very good times. I think the main reason for that is because we have remained friends – that’s the most important thing.”

Gushing about the ‘Kapoor and Sons’ actress, Shah declared that he loved how Ratna had stuck by him through thick and thin, which had resulted in a beatiful partnership and friendship between the two:

“Ratna was a blessing for me. In hindsight, she probably deserved better—I had been married before and was a drug addict when I met her. In fact, her parents never approved of our match. But Ratna being who she was, never paid any heed to it. We never paid any heed to it. We knew we wanted to be together and that’s what we did. And that resulted in this beautiful partnership and friendship that we share to this day. I consider myself very lucky to have had Ratna with me through every thick and thin, and every sadness and happiness. It’s beautiful how we still find something new about each other every day, even after all this time–something more to love and cherish about the other person. More than anything else, that is what I live for.”

‘Dissapointing’: Netflix’s The Archies trailer has divided Twitter

Yesterday, Netflix debuted the trailer of the Zoya Akhtar venture ‘The Archies’ which is adapted from the popular comic series Archie, with Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor and Agastya Nanda making their debut.

Although the trailer has already received praise from King Khan, who gushed about seeing his daughter’s debut on screen, not a lot of fans agree with him.

The internet is divided with some slamming Zoya Akhtar for white washing Indian history and choosing to make a film with actors who have nepotism connections, and others actually looking forward to Zoya’s take on the beloved comic.

Some users were criticising the film, comparing Zoya Akhtar to Karan Johar for picking people with no talent instead of actors who were struggling to find roles in the industry today.

Others had to draw out how unrealistic the portrayal of the 60s was in the film, pointing out that India in this era had a completely different style and aesthetic than what the film was portraying.

Come to see the pig in a wig? Dursley home stalked by Potterheads, residents complain

If you’re stepping down Privet Drive, Little Whinging, with a clear agenda to find the black cat that’s actually Professor McGonagall walking near a certain house so you could beg her for the Hogwarts letter, we’re sorry to inform you that its too late for it to happen, as the residents of Dursley House have put their foot down.

According to the British tabloid, The Mirror, the residents who are currently staying at the Dursley’s house in Privet Drive in 2016, are now fed up with the consistent stream of fans flooding their doorstep, even one bizarre instance of a fan bringing their Ford Angelia to the house and taking a photo along side it.

“We’ve had people in floods of tears. It’s bizarre. The kids, you get it. But obviously the adults. They dress up sometimes in full gear and recreate scenes.

“People have travelled miles. From all over the world. People are sometimes really awkward. We are used to it, but not used to it in a way.”

“Ten is the maximum we’ve had but people come in groups. People come in cars and it’s all day and sometimes at night. The school holidays are the worst.”

Really could help if the residents could bloat up like Aunt Marge and float away?
