    Lahore Police officials will now wear ‘body cams’ to fight crime

    Lahore Police has planned to utilise Body Worn Cam at E-Police checkpoints on the entry and exit points of the provincial capital for the welfare of the public, according to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Wing Lahore Captain (retd) Mustansir Feroze. 

    He claimed that the Lahore Police Department’s plan will not only keep the city secure but also minimize citizen-police conflicts. He added that the interaction (audio and video) between police officers and civilians would also be recorded by the Body-Worn Cam.

    According to SSP Operations, this measure will aid in identifying criminals as well as eliminating terrorism. He claimed that this method would re-establish public trust in the police force, and also that citizens can lodge complaints on 1787.

    Senior police officials will supervise the programme and would offer on-the-spot instructions to address the public’s complaints.

    Body cameras are already being used in a number of other nations, but they have never been deployed by police in Pakistan.     The government is considering gradually withdrawing the petroleum product subsidy ahead of talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the renewal of the $6 billion loan programme, reports Geo News.

    According to the sources of Geo News, the government has received a summary from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) for the POL prices from May 16. According to individuals familiar with the situation, the government is likely to progressively phase away subsidies on all petroleum products, with a decision on fuel prices for the next two weeks due on Sunday.

    If the government removes all subsidies on petrol, the price will rise to Rs190 per litre.

    Similarly, the government is subsidising fuel at Rs73.04 per litre and kerosene at Rs43.16 per litre. If the subsidy is removed, diesel and kerosene prices will rise to Rs230 and Rs176 per litre, respectively.

    Earlier, Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif dismissed the proposal from OGRA to raise the price of petroleum products.

    Keeping in view the meteorological department’s prognosis of a heatwave for the coming week, the Punjab government issued an advisory on Friday, requesting that all relevant ministries in the province take steps to mitigate the effects of the heat.

    The provincial and district crisis management agencies have been activated across the province to avert health-related occurrences, according to Punjab Chief Secretary Kamran Ali Afzal, who issued an advisory to several ministries.

    Hospitals and the emergency service Rescue 1122 have also been placed on high alert, he said. For sensitive areas, temporary water-drinking sites and early reaction centers, according to the chief secretary, should be erected. He urged individuals to take all necessary precautions to protect themselves from the heatwave and to heed the health department’s advice.

    The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has already issued a warning for severe heatwave conditions in upper, central, and southern Punjab during the next week.

    From May 15, a high-pressure system is expected to hold the upper atmosphere, according to the Met Office.

    Day temperatures are expected to rise to 7-9 degrees Celsius above normal owing to the high pressure in upper Punjab, and 6-8 degrees Celsius beyond average in the central and south Punjab, during the heatwave.

    The National Command Operation Centre (NCOC), which was tackling Covid-19 in Pakistan, was shut down on March 31.

    On March 16, NCOC decided to lift all the Covid-19 related restrictions amid the decline in cases.

    In India, an elderly couple is suing their son and his wife for failing to provide them with a grandchild.

    Sanjeev and Sadhana Prasad claim to have spent all of their savings on their pilot son’s education and an extravagant wedding. They now seek retribution.

    “My son has been married for six years but they are still not planning a baby,” the parents said in their petition filed with a court in Haridwar last week. “At least if we have a grandchild to spend time with, our pain will become bearable.”

    Thy are seeking a compensation of more than Rs one crore, twenty five lakh from the couple if they are unable to have a child within the next year.

    The parents spent $65,000 (12532734.50 PKR) to get their son trained as a pilot in the US only for him to return to India unemployed. Mr Prasad claims that he is suing his son because he married in 2016 with the “hopes of having a grandchild.” He also claims that his daughter-in-law and her family have financial control over his son and have prohibited them from having a kid.

    “We also had to take a loan to build our house and now we are going through a lot of financial hardships,” the couple said in their petition. “Mentally too we are quite disturbed because we are living alone.”

    Mr Prasad and his wife are seeking compensation for financial and emotional losses, according to AK Srivastava, the lawyer representing them.

    “The couple has the freedom to not give birth to a child, which is why we are asking to be compensated. The amount is the money Mr Prasad has spent on his son’s upbringing,” said their lawyer.

    On May 30, the Sindh government will finally launch the Rescue 1122 service in Karachi, which would provide emergency aid to those in need.

    The approval was announced at a briefing held on Thursday at the Sindh Secretariat, with Sindh Chief Secretary Dr Muhammad Sohail Rajput in the chair. The initiative to open the trauma center and Rescue 1122 service in Larkana would also be finished by May 30, according to relevant officials.

    Later on, the service would be expanded to include the province’s other divisions. The meeting resolved that on the motorway and the Indus Highway, fire engines and ambulances would be available every 50 kilometers.

    Once the ambulance service is established under the Rescue 1122 service, the fire department would follow suit. Barrister Murtaza Wahab, the Administrator of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and Adviser to the Sindh Chief Minister on Law, said that a fleet of 50 ambulances will begin operating in Karachi on May 30 as part of the Rescue 1122 service.

    According to him, the Sindh government chose to introduce the rescue service in Karachi after improving the city’s civic infrastructure and transportation amenities. Under the rescue plan, he said, a quick response centre would be constructed in the city every 10 kilometres.

    Meanwhile, another meeting, chaired by the Sindh chief secretary, resolved to enlist the help of the Sindh police and Rangers to combat wheat hoarding and smuggling in the state.

    Riazullah Seerat, a Taliban official at the Ministry for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in Herat, said authorities “have instructed that men and women be segregated in restaurants”.

    He told AFP that owners have been verbally warned that the rule applies “even if they are husband and wife”. One Afghan woman who did not wish to be identified said the manager told her and her husband to sit separately at a Herat restaurant on Wednesday.

    Driving instructors in Herat have been told to stop granting licenses to female drivers. Women have been prohibited from traveling alone across the country, and officials have instructed women to cover up completely in public, preferably with a burqa.

    The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted torrential rainfall starting next week, putting an end to the brutal heatwave in most parts of Pakistan.

    As per the latest PMD forecast, a new weather system will develop in the country from Sunday, attracting downpours from the May 16 to May18.

    Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in Islamabad, upper and central Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit Baltistan, and Azad Jammu Kashmir. Following the rain, the PMD predicts that temperatures in these areas will decrease radically.

    In addition, the PMD has directed that the relevant Disaster Management Authorities be on high alert in order to avert loss of life and property throughout the rainfall.

    In other news, the PMD has warned that a severe heatwave will approach Sindh. The extreme heat will extend through May 17th, with daytime temperatures in most regions exceeding usual.

    A 27-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide over her husband’s inability to set up a toilet in their house, reports India Times.

    Ramya from Tamil Nadu in India, a pharmacist by profession, got married to Karthikeyan on April 6.

    It was reported that right after a day of their marriage, Ramya returned to her mother’s house as there was no functional toilet at her husband’s place.

    Despite her husband’s reassurances that he would rent a house with a toilet facility, he never fulfilled any promise. Subsequently, Ramya, disheartened and disappointed, committed suicide on May 10. Her mother found her hanging from her sari.

    She was rushed to the hospital and was admitted there for two days but she eventually passed away on Tuesday.

    Ramya’s mother lodged a complaint against Karthikeyan. However, as per the media report, police are investigating her father’s role in her being upset as he did not approve of the marriage and had not attended any of the events.
