  • Gas leak causes death of six in a family

    On Tuesday, six members of a family including three children suffocated to death while sleeping due to a gas leak in Hagnu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

    The victims reportedly switched on the gas heater in their bedroom at night to protect themselves from the severe cold. Afterward, they went to sleep while the gas heater was left on.

    There was gas load shedding due to which the flame died out. However, the gas fumes did not burn again when the gas resumed. Instead, it keep on filling in the room causing them to suffocate which ultimately led to their death.

    The neighbours got suspicious when the family did not wake up late in the morning. They banged at the door but when they didn’t get a response, they decided to break down the door. When locals entered the room, the victims were lying on their beds.

    The deceased included a man, two women, and three children. Their dead bodies were shifted to the hospital by a rescue team.

    Kick your parents out of the house, go to jail for one year: Lahore High Court

    The Lahore High Court ruled on Monday that those evicting their parents from their house would face one-year jail term and fine under the Parents Protection Ordinance (PPO) 2021.

    “A person, no matter a tenant or a house owner, cannot evict parents, and eviction will be an offence,” a judgment, written by Justice Ali Baqar Najafi read.

    Justice Ali Baqir Najafi issued written judgment on the request of citizens Ali Ikram who accused his son Mian Muhammad Ikram for throwing him out from his house. 

    “Parents could expel their children from their home any time. An offspring must leave the house within seven days in such a case; otherwise he/she will have to face one-month jail term,” the court said.

    President Arif Alvi in May passed the Parents Protection Ordinance (PPO) 2021. As per PPO 2021, if the parents want their children out of the house that the parents own or have rented, the children will be held responsible for not obeying the instructions.

    The children must leave the house of their parents within 30 days of the written notice issued by the parents and failing to do so might land them in jail for 30 days or slap a fine on them or both.

    Two Vietnamese brothers reclaimed the Guinness World Record in 53 seconds when one of the brothers climbed 100 stairs while the other balanced on his head. This stunt was exhibited outside the Cathedral in Spain.

    Giang Quoc Nghiep interviewed with international media and said, “Today, we are feeling wonderful. We are feeling amazing because now we have climbed 100 steps within 53 seconds and I did not imagine in my mind…I hope everybody will remember this day.”

    While another brother, Giang Quoc Co said, “Some days ago, we were under stress because of everyday practice. The weather is very cold and we practise in the morning till night.., Five years ago, we climbed 90 steps within 52 seconds…I feel wonderful,” the other brother can be heard saying in the video.”

    The circus-performing brothers, Giang Quoc Co aged 37, and Giang Quoc Nghiep aged 32 also made the record earlier at the same venue in December 2016. At that time, they climbed 90 steps in 52 seconds.


    This year, they achieved a record of 100 steps in only 53 seconds. The management set up 10 additional steps to perform the stunt, as the Cathedral has 90 steps.

    In 2018, the world record set by the brothers in 2016 was reportedly broken by Peruvian acrobats Pablo Nonato Panduro and Joel Yaicate Saavedra with seven steps, 97.

    According to the Guinness World Records website, the duo in December 2018 also had set another record to ascend and descend stairs in the shortest time while one of the brothers was blindfolded on Italy’s TV channel, TV8.

    Sindh announces to pass all matric, intermediate students in practical exams

    The Sindh Board Committee of Chairmen has announced to pass all matric and intermediate students who could not appear in their practical exams, reports Geo News.

    The notification was issued on Sunday in which another change has been introduced: those students who wish to reappear in a paper for the purpose of improvement can now do it four times. Previously students were only allowed to retake the exam only once.

    The Chairman of the provincial board, Professor Saeed Uddin said that the decision has been taken in line with the system in place for federal board students.

    He also said that special examinations will be conducted for students in February 2022.

  • Senior citizen found dead in Karachi under mysterious circumstances

    An elderly man was found dead in unusual circumstances at his residence in Orangi Town, Karachi, during the presence of a welder who was working inside the house.

    According to the statement given by the welder, Salam, to the police, the older man fell on the floor and got injured. He put a pillow on the face to stop the bleeding. Later, he hid himself under the bed after his family members knocked on the door.

    The family members immediately took the elderly man to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

    The welder was caught by the family members. They called the police when they found him lying beneath the bed for several hours. The police arrested the man due to the mysterious death of the citizen, Hashamuddin.

    A hammer was also recovered from the suspect, which the police has sent for forensic examination. The police officials said that the interrogation is still underway from Salam as it is claimed to be a mysterious incident.

  • Indian conjoined twins get a job, two salaries

    Conjoined twins from Amritsar Sohna and Mohna landed a job at the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited in India. The job has allotted them both two salaries, of about 20,000 Pakistani rupees each, a total of around 40,000 Pakistani rupees.

    The twins were born in New Delhi on June 14, 2003 with two hearts, arms, kidneys and spinal cords, but a shared liver, gall bladder and legs.

    After their birth, the twins were abandoned by their parents and raised in an orphanage.

    Sohna, along with Mohna, look after the electrical appliances at PSPCL, an official said. The twins have an ITI diploma (electrical).

    The twins thanked the Punjab government for providing them this opportunity.

    The twins have an affinity toward music and can play harmonium and sing hymns.

  • More than 4500 flights cancelled as Omicron impacts flight crews

    Over 4500 flights have been cancelled around the world and thousands more delayed due to the outbreak of the highly infectious Omicron variant of coronavirus, reports Al Jazeera.

    At least 2,000 flights were cancelled worldwide on Christmas Day.

    According to the tracking website flightaware.com, 616 flights originating from or headed to the United States (US) airports were cancelled and more than 8,000 were delayed.

    Pilots, flights attendants and other staff have been calling in sick or having to quarantine after exposure to Covid, forcing international airlines (Lufthansa, Delta, United Airlines) to cancel flights during one of the years peak travel periods.

    United Airlines who cancelled 185 flights on Christmas eve, in a statement, said, “The nationwide spike in Omicron cases this week has had a direct impact on our flight crews and the people who run our operation.”

    Earlier this week, it was reported that the rapidly spreading Omicron variant is the dominant Covid strain in the US, representing 73 per cent of sequenced cases.

  • US eases in-person visa interviews to cut wait time

    United States (US) has decided to take a lenient view for certain non-immigrant visas and curtail visa waiting time.

    “The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in profound reductions in the department’s visa processing capacity,” the US embassy said in a statement. “As global travel rebounds, we are taking these temporary steps to further our commitment to safely and efficiently reduce visa wait times while maintaining national security as our priority.”

    The consular officers have been empowered to relax and exempt in-person interviews for H-1B, students, temporary agricultural and non-agricultural workers, student exchange visitors, as well as athletes, artists, and entertainers.

    After the impact of the coronavirus, there was a long delay in visa interviews which have been now compensated in relaxing the rules, making quick and prompt disposal of the above visas.

  • Kashmiri students await justice, arrested for alleged celebrations of India’s loss to Pak in cricket

    Three Kashmiri students are still awaiting justice after they were arrested by the police for allegedly celebrating Pakistan’s win against India in the T20 Worldcup in October this year. The police charged them with sedition, reports by The Wire.

    The students whose names are Arsheed Yusuf, Inayat Altaf Sheikh, and Showkat Ahmed Ganai were admitted to Raja Balwant Singh Engineering College in Agra. They also got expelled from the university as well. Police arrested them on October 27 after they uploaded some statuses on WhatsApp. Currently, they are in Agra jail for over 50 days.

    After the rejection of their bail petitions in lower courts, their applications are now proceeding to Allahabad High Court.

    Their families appealed bail orders for their sons but the Allahabad High Court in the state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) could not hear their applications for bail because of some procedural delays.

    Prior to this, lawyers refused to aid the jailed students in Agra as they were labelled “anti-nationalists.” Some volunteers and student unions arranged legal aid in the city of UP, Mathura. Another application was also filed to move the case from Agra to Mathura alongside the bail plea but it is still pending in court.

    The lawyer who represented the students, Madhuvan Dutt said, ”Justice Suneet Kumar was hearing the petitions today [Thursday] after lunch. Applications were heard until article number 43 however, our article number was 76. So our application was not disposed of. It is likely to come up only around the 6th or the 7th of January.”

    Dutt added, “All litigants in UP are suffering with these delays. Three of our appeals for the transfer application could not be heard because there was no sitting judge. This delay is causing injustice for all litigants.”

    According to a friend and mentor to the students, Manzoor Wani, other Kashmiri students faced harassment and threats after the arrest.

    The hopes of the student’s families are fading due to delays in the hearing.
