  • Civil rights organisations to protest today against the Sialkot incident

    Civil Rights organisations have organised a rally to “protest and condemn” the Sialkot incident. The protest will be held today at 3pm at the Liberty roundabout Lahore. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan along with the Joint Action Committee for People’s Rights, Haqooq-e-Khalq Movement and Women’s Action Forum have given the call for the protest.

    A prominent member of the Haqooq-e-Khalq Movement (HKM) Ammar Ali Jan in a tweet said, “Words are not enough. We must rise against religious extremism destroying our country. Joint Action Committee, HKM and other organisations are holding a protest today in Lahore (Liberty roundabout) at 3 pm to condemn the barbaric event in Sialkot. Join us.”

    A charged mob in Sialkot yesterday tortured, killed and burnt the body of a Sri Lankan man who was accused of blasphemy over some posters he had allegedly taken down.

    Prime Minister Imran Khan has condemned the incident and has said that justice will be served.

    The police have arrested more than 100 people involved, and one of the main culprits, Farhan Idrees has been arrested. Farhan gave an interview to local news channels, taking pride in the murder he committed.

    End of toxic smog in Punjab: Met Office predicts rain across country

    The people of Punjab will finally be able to take a deep breath. The Met Office has predicted rain across the country, in the upcoming 36 hours, which will clear the blanket of toxic smog in the province.

    The most awaited rain, as per the forecast of weather experts, is expected at different parts of the country during the weekend after a prolonged dry spell and help subside the prevailing smog in the plain areas of Punjab.

    Travellers had been facing severe inconvenience, especially on the motorways, due to the intense fog in most areas of Punjab at morning and night hours while some motorways authorities imposed travel restrictions at certain places with severe smoggy conditions.

    Rain would give relief to the citizens facing allergies, as well as influenza and cough due to the dry weather spell. Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) revealed that a weak westerly weather system is likely to enter upper parts of the country and would persist till Sunday.

    Under this weather system, rain with snowfall over the hills is expected in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad and Northeast Punjab on Saturday (evening or night) and Sunday.

    Rain with wind-thunderstorm is also expected in Quetta, Ziarat, Pishin, Zhob and its surrounding on Saturday (evening or night).

    Rain-wind-thunderstorm with snowfall over the hills is expected in Kashmir, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Malakand, Kohistan, Shangla, Buner, Mansehra, Abbottabad on Sunday.

    Light rain/wind-thunderstorm is expected in Haripur, Swabi, Mardan, Nowshera, Peshawar, Charsadda, Bajaur, Kurram, Waziristan, Kohat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal and Lahore on Saturday night and Sunday.

    Snowfall is also expected in Neelum valley, Bagh, Rawalakot, Nathiagali, Galliyat, Naran, Kaghan, Hunza, Gilgit, Skardu, Astore, Chitral, Dir, Swat and Malam Jabba on Sunday. About the possible impacts of the rain, the Met office said the prevailing smog conditions would likely to subside in plains of Punjab while the dense fog would likely to develop over plain areas of Punjab from Monday. The night temperatures would likely to fall gradually after the wet spell and severe cold weather conditions may prevail at certain places.

    An event organized by a students society in COMSATS Abottabad has been receiving criticism for organising a concert among other events.

    Such actives are very common in universities in Pakistan. However, this particular event is being opposed by some people terming the activity as, “obscenity.”

    The media coordinator of COMSATS Nasir Ahmed while talking to SAMAA said, “We have always had such events at the varsity.” “For the past two years, we were unable to hold the festival because of the coronavirus lockdown.”

    The event has been scheduled for Sunday December 5 and the concert will feature singer Farhan Saeed. 

    People used the hashtag #Ban_Obscenity_in_ComsatsAtd to express their disapproval. Journalist Ansar Abbasi also used the hashtag to show his support of the ban.

    Karachi Police begins murder investigation of Bar Council Secretary, Lawyers boycott court

    On Thursday, the police launched an inquiry for the murder of a Bar Council Secretary who was killed in broad daylight in Karachi, to find the motive behind the targeted killing and identify the assailants.

    On Wednesday morning, Sindh Bar Council Secretary, 40-year-old Irfan Ali Mehr, was shot dead in Karachi, when he was returning back to his residence after dropping off his daughter to school.

    On the call of Sindh Bar Council, lawyers boycotted the city courts session.

    The newly elected secretary of Sindh Bar Council, Umer Soomro and other members requested the judge to suspend the hearing for today which was accepted.

    A rally was also taken out from the City Courts to the Karachi Press Club with protestors demanding that the authorities arrest the killers immediately.

    The brother of a victim, Rizwan Mehr registered the case against unknown suspects at Shar-e-Faisal Police station. The complainant also told the police that the family had no enmity.

    The First Information Report (FIR) has been filed under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997, and Section 302 (murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

    Karachi Police Chief, AIG Imran Yaqoob Minhas has formed a high-level investigation team.

    According to the police official, they did not find any related clues regarding the murder case so far. The spent bullet casings which were recovered from the crime scene have been sent to the forensic science lab for further examination. The final results from the lab have yet to be revealed.

    A passenger plane of a private airline was struck by a bird before landing at the Islamabad airport. The incident happened during a flight from Karachi to Islamabad on Friday morning.

    The pilot successfully managed to land the plane without any casualties or injuries. The plane was carrying around 150 passengers.

    The officials of the airline revealed that the landing gear of the plane was damaged. The return flight to Karachi was delayed as the airline’s engineers had to do some repair work. The management arranged another flight to take passengers to the port city.

    Earlier in March, a similar incident took place during a PIA flight PK-368 from Karachi to Islamabad. One of its engines was damaged on which 162 passengers were board. The plane was hit by the plane just after it took off from the runway. However, the pilot managed to land it safely.

    UN chief condemns travel restrictions, calls it ‘travel apartheid’

    United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres said on Wednesday that a travel ban imposed because of the Covid pandemic that cuts off any one country or region as “not only deeply unfair and punitive – they are ineffective.”, report Geo News.

    Guterres said that tests should continually be performed on travelers to reduce the threat of transmission in other parts of the world.


    He further added, “We have the instruments to have safe travel. Let’s use those instruments to avoid this kind, of allow me to say, travel apartheid, which I think is unacceptable.”

    The new variant of the coronavirus, which was previously identified as B.1.1.529 infection was reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) from South Africa on November 24 and named it Omicron.

    Several countries, including Pakistan, have completely banned flights from some countries in Africa.

    In African countries, the rate of vaccination was recorded as very low which Guterres has previously alarmed the world about. The main reason for the lack of vaccination was the inequality distribution of vaccines and low immunisation rates which became “a breeding ground for variants.”

    The annual meeting was also held between the United Nation and African Union to solve the concern of the travel ban.

    Speaking from the Joint-Conference with UN Secretary-General, African Union Commission Chair Moussa Faki Mahamat also said that the travel ban cannot be justified.

    Divorce rate highest in Pakistan since 2019: Gallup survey

    The divorce rate has reached the highest in Pakistan according to a survey conducted by Gallup and Gilani Pakistan.

    2 out of every 5 Pakistanis believe that in-laws are the major reason for most failed marriages. The survey also recorded that 58 per cent of the population in Pakistan believe that divorce cases have increased in society, reports The News.

    It has been observed that the lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic contributed to mental health problems where couples experienced interference from the in-laws.

    In Karachi, 3800 divorce cases have been registered. Recently, 10,312 cases have been recorded by the District Judiciary of Rawalpindi between January 1 to November 9 in 2021 that including 10,312 cases of divorce, khula, guardianship, and maintenance whereas 13,000 cases are still waiting for the verdict in family courts of the Rawalpindi district.

    Around 70 per cent of the divorce cases filed were of women who married with their free will. Some women claimed the interference and bitterness from the in-laws as the marriage was not arranged by them [in-laws].

    Family Advocate Hamid Rashid Gondal also revealed that few cases of divorce end up in a settlement in court.

    Forced marriages are another contributing factor in increasing divorce numbers.

    Pakistan fully vaccinates 33% of its eligible population against covid-19

    Pakistan has vaccinated 33 per cent of the eligible population against Covid-19, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) stated in a tweet.

    “33% of Pakistan’s eligible population has been fully vaccinated!! If you are still unvaccinated, please get your dose now! Stay safe!,” the tweet by the center read.

    As of today, the total number of vaccines administered across the country is 124,054,300.

    The NCOC has also approved a booster shot of Covid-19 vaccines for healthcare workers, those aged over 50 years, and immunocompromised people.

    A new variant of the coronavirus was reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) from South Africa on November 24. It was declared a new variant “of concern” and named it Omicron. The new variant has raised alarm in the entire world, including Pakistan.

  • Property tycoon escapes police custody with armed men

    In a bizarre Hollywood movie-style development, Property Tycoon Nadeem Ijaz escaped police custody with his armed men when the court rejected his bail in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.

    The accused was on interim bail till 30 November, reports Dawn.

    Armed men in a four-wheel car stopped the police vehicle outside the court building in Rawalpindi. Nadeem escaped custody with the assistance of his armed men and ran off.

    Earlier, a case was registered against Ijaz and Saad Nazir by Shahzad Mehmood, a senior official of Metropolitan Directorate Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) with Chontra police station.

    In the First Investigation Report (FIR), it stated that the owners of the private housing society were developing the society on illegal land without getting the approval of RDA.

    However, Nadeem Ijaz got an interim bail from the court which ended on November 30.

    The City Police Officer (CPO), Athar Ismail have instructed Superdent Poice (SP) Saddar Kamran to arrest the culprit and accomplices within 24 hours.
