  • Most of our politicians are spending their Valentine’s Day with one man

Most of our politicians are spending their Valentine’s Day with one man

Valentine’s Day 2020 is on a Friday and we asked a few politicians what they are planning to do on V day. And most of them are spending their day with one man: Turkish President Tayyib Erdoğan.

Erdogan will be visiting Pakistan this week

Erdoğan is set to visit Pakistan on the 13th and will be addressing a joint session of Parliament on Friday the 14th of February. When asked PML-Q’s Moonis Elahi, PPP’s Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar and Rehman Malik said they would be in Parliament to hear Erdoğan speak.

While PTI’s Hammad Azhar said he will be working, we’re assuming that he will also be attending Erdoğan’s session.

But not everyone has a date with Erdoğan. PTI’s rising politician Ali Tareen says he will be taking his wife out in the morning and will spend the evening with his team, Multan Sultans as they train for the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Ali Tareen is the owner of Multan Sultans which is set to play the PSL, starting next week

But PML-N’s Hina Butt has one of the best V day plans. She says, “I love Valentine’s. I love expressing my love to the important people in my life by making them handwritten cards, chocolates, precious gifts, flowers. My father is my first love and always has been my first Valentine. I always give him a red rose and my son gives me a hand-written Valentine’s day card. This year I am also getting a Valentine’s basket make for Maryam Nawaz with a picture of her and her father, Mian Nawaz Sharif sahib, saying “Every girl’s first love is her dad” as they are not together at the moment. I know it will make her happy on Valentine’s Day.”

Hina Butt has a super fun V day planned

And that’s not all. “Also this year I am doing something special. I am treating myself by getting a puppy. My son, Momi and I will go to find a pet in the day and get a Pug or a fluffy cat,” she says adding, “Pets give you unconditional love. Then I plan to pamper myself in the spa and relax.”

Hina is also planning to celebrate her evening in style – with her girls.

“Later at night I am planning to celebrate ‘Galentine’s Day’ (Valentine’s Day with my girlfriends),” she says. “I will date my best friends. Getting the gang together, book a limo, get dressed up, go to a fancy restaurant, and order the special Valentine’s Day menu and do something fun as a group.”

    Tell a story

An effective way to prepare for presenting yourself is to do your own SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats). Then combine this analysis with your achievements. It will be the last thing they will remember about you.

    Rehearse for the interview

Effective presentations are often well-rehearsed. Get a friend or colleague to practise a mock interview with commonly asked questions. Practice will allow you to avoid mistakes during the interview. Practice introducing yourself, your storytelling style and delivering an effective CTA. This will reduce any nervousness, and make you look more confident and prepared for the big day.

    Body language

Interviewers may already make up their minds about a candidate within the first seven seconds of the interview. You must control your body language so as to seem confident and positive.

    Control over your speech

Presenters and public speakers need to have clear, strong and confident voices… so do candidates in an interview. Drink water before a case interview, your interviewers do not want to hear you croaking your way through the interview. Also, practice varying your speech in terms of pitch and volume. Remember, effective communication isn’t only about what you say, it’s also how you say it.

These six presentation skills are simple and effective for any job or case interview. Learn to master these skills and you will definitely be able to land any job you desire. Always remember, if you do your research, words and confidence will come automatically.

  • Did coronavirus reach China from Pakistan?

Did coronavirus reach China from Pakistan?

With Chinese scientists saying the endangered pangolin could be the potential link that facilitated the spread of coronavirus across China, a report in Independent Urdu has argued if the novel virus could have reached the neighbouring country from Pakistan, where the scaly anteater is quite commonly found.

According to the report, the rather expensive pangolin meat is widely consumed by the Chinese, and to meet its demand, China imports the animal from other countries, including Pakistan.

Although pangolin is found all across the country, its largest population is there in the Potohar region — northern parts of Punjab bordering the western parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and the southern parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

While it is an environment-friendly animal, there’s been a 90%, 80% and 50% decrease in its population in KP and Sindh, Punjab, and AJK, respectively, amid a spike in pangolin trafficking.

The pangolin is considered the most trafficked animal on the planet and more than one million have been snatched from Asian and African forests in the past decade, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

According to a report in DAWN, some officials say that pangolin meat is being sold in the local market, as people coming from China like it. A large number of Chinese people are staying in Karachi, working on projects related to the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). But these allegations have never been formally investigated or proven.

China in January ordered a temporary ban on the trade in wild animals until the epidemic is under control. The country has long been accused by conservationists of tolerating a shadowy trade in endangered animals for food or as ingredients in traditional medicines.

“If we want to do everything in our power to prevent deadly disease outbreaks such as coronavirus, then a permanent ban on wildlife trade, in China, and around the world, is the only solution,” said Neil D’Cruze, global head of wildlife research at World Animal Protection.

A price list that circulated on China’s internet for business at the Wuhan market showed a menagerie of animals or animal-based products including live foxes, crocodiles, wolf puppies, giant salamanders, snakes, rats, peacocks, porcupines, camel meat and other game — 112 items in all.

The SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) virus that killed hundreds of people in China and Hong Kong in 2002-03 also has been traced to wild animals, with scientists saying it likely originated in bats, later reaching humans via civets.

Nawaz Sharif’s grandson Junaid Safdar was recently spotted enjoying a polo match in Lahore. Pictures of him were widely circulated on social media following which he was heavily criticised for enjoying a polo match while his grandfather allegedly battles between life and death.

Junaid, the eldest son of Maryam Nawaz and Captain Safdar Awan, is an avid polo player and often shares pictures of himself with his horses.

Meanwhile, on December 21, 2019, Maryam Nawaz had filed a petition in the LHC in a bid to have her name removed from the no-fly list. The PML-N leader, in her petition, had said that she wanted permission to fly abroad so she could be with her ailing father. Nawaz’s brother Shehbaz Sharif had said the schedule for Nawaz’s critical medical procedures had been changed twice because Maryam was not there to accompany him.

The petition was the PML-N leader’s second attempt to have her name struck off the travel restrictions list.
