    Strong earthquake jolts Islamabad, parts of KP, Punjab

    A strong earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale jolted Islamabad and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) as well as Punjab on Friday evening.

    According to initial reports, tremors were felt in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sialkot, Chiniot, Murree, Jhelum, Hafizabad, Peshawar, Parachinar, Abbottabad, Haripur, Kohat and Lower Dir among other cities. Parts of Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) were also jolted.

    The epicenter of the quake was Hindu Kush mountain range in Afghanistan, 210 kilometres below the earth’s crust, geological wing of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said.

    People of the areas where the quake was felt rushed out of their homes and other buildings in panic reciting verses from Holy Quran. The epicenter of the quake has not yet been determined.

  • Chunian child rapist-murderer given death sentence on three counts

    A special court on Tuesday awarded the Chunian child rapist-murderer death sentence on three counts, along with a life sentence on one count and a fine worth Rs3.2 million, for one of the four rape and murders he had committed earlier this year. He has also been directed to pay Rs200,000 compensation to the legal heirs of the victim.

    According to reports, the court awarded the verdict to the 27-year-old rickshaw driver over the murder of only one of the four children, whose remains were recovered back in September. However, the cases of the remaining minors are still pending before the court.

    On October 1, the perpetrator Sohail Shahzad was arrested by police in a case pertaining to the rape and murder of four minors in Chunian, located about 70 km south of Lahore. Four children — aged between eight and 12 years — had gone missing since June this year with the latest, eight-year-old Faizan, disappearing on the night of September 16.

    Soon after, the remains of three of them were found on September 17 from sand dunes near Chunian bypass. The discovery sent waves of shock and terror among the residents who protested against the continuous cycle of child abuse in the area.

    Considering the matter was of grave concern, Prime Minister Imran Khan took notice of the incident, ordered an inquiry and overhauled the local police set-up.

    Two weeks later, Shahzad was arrested after his DNA matched with samples recovered from the remains of a victim. During the initial questioning, Sohail confessed to sexually abusing and killing all four children.

    Due to security concerns, the trial against the convict was held at Kot Lakhpat Jail. A total of 23 witnesses recorded their statements against the convict.

  • Sri Lankan commentator Russel Arnold becomes a Biryani fan

    Famous Sri Lankan cricket commentator Russel Arnold has become a fan of Karachi’s biryani. The former cricketer is now  in Karachi with the ICC’s official commentators’ team for the second Test match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

    Russel took to Twitter to express his love for biryani, stating Karachi as the ‘Biryani Capital’ of the world.

    Unsatisfied with a single plate, Russel even hit an extra session in the gym to eat  some more biryani.

    The arrival of Sri Lankan cricket team has marked the return of Test cricket in Pakistan. With the first Test match in Rawalpindi being washed out by rain, everybody is now waiting for Karachi Test that will decide the series.

    The matches are scheduled from December 19 (Wednesday) to December 23 (Monday) at the National Stadium, Karachi.

    Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Monday took a break from his political activities to bond with nature.

    Accompanied by his sister, Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari, Bilawal made his way to Hawke’s Bay Beach where he released 300 baby green turtles into the sea. According to details, Bilawal was very excited to touch the baby turtles who were hatched at the Marine Turtle Conservation Nursery of Sindh Wildlife Department.

    The Sindh Wildlife Department, along with International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and World Wildlife Fund (WWF), has been carrying out a sea turtle conservation project in Pakistan since 1979. Adults are tagged and the eggs collected from the beach are incubated in special enclosures at Hawkesbay and Sandspit. Hatchlings are weighed and counted at the Sindh Wildlife lab at the beach and the relevant data is gathered.

    Though adult sea turtles spend most of their lives in the oceans, they return to the beach where they were born to lay their eggs. Every year in October and November, green sea turtles arrive at the sandy beaches of Sindh and Balochistan which are important nesting sites for sea turtles. The turtles lay their eggs there and leave after burying them. This is where the wildlife department steps in a takes care of the eggs, which are vulnerable and can easily be preyed. After an incubation period of about two months the youngsters hatch and scramble towards the water. Only one in a thousand survive to adulthood.

  • Women’s museum to be set up in Islamabad

    The National Commission on Status of Women (NCSW) and Higher Education Commission (HEC) have signed a principal agreement to set up a women’s museum in Islamabad.

    According to reports, the aim of establishing this museum is to preserve women movements throughout history and to provide a resource for newly enfranchised women to enter public life.

    The museum will support and protect education, research and training on the roles and contributions of women.

    NCSW is striving for the development of women’s libraries, museums and archives.

    Kashmir Markhor trophy-hunted in Chitral

    American hunter Joe Lawrence Walreven hunted a 48-inch long Kashmir Markhor in Toshi Conservancy in Lower Chitral.

    According to reports, the hunt was done after a permit worth $140,000 was obtained from the wildlife department.

    The divisional forest officer of wildlife division, Mohammad Idrees, shared that the 82-year-old hunter faced no difficulty in finding an animal for hunting as he spotted and earmarked a 10-year-old markor within an hour after he disembarked from his vehicle on Garam Chashma Road near Chitral city.

    Joe reportedly “wasted no time in shooting the animal” and achieved his trophy skillfully. He fired a shot at the markhor from a distant range by his Remington rifle. The animal fell down instantly.

    Last week, Italian hunter Carlo Pasco hunted the season’s first Markhor trophy in Skardu town. According to reports, Pasco successfully hunted a flared-horned markhor after paying a permit fee of $85,000.

    Meanwhile, last month, it was reported that the wildlife department of Gilgit Baltistan has auctioned four licenses for hunting the markhor, the official national animal of Pakistan after the Ministry of Climate Change agreed to the licenses, including for trophy hunting of the much in demand flare-horned Astore markhor, a large goat species native to Pakistan.

    Each license was sold for over $80,000, of which 80 percent will go to the villages where the hunt takes place for developing their infrastructure.

  • Police to wear uniforms with cameras to restore public faith

    The Islamabad Police will now be donning uniforms with cameras in order to restore public faith in law enforcement.   

    According to reports, Islamabad Policemen will now record encounters with ordinary citizens, suspects, witnesses, and passersby so that the public faith is restored in the law enforcement agency. The videos that have been recorded can also be used as evidence at the courts also.

    Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP) Muhammad Aamir Zulfiqar, speaking about the initiative said, “These cameras will be connected with the Safe City Project. This way, complaints about policemen especially serving at police pickets will be resolved.”

    Twenty cameras will be bought in the trial phase, which will later be provided to cops serving at various police stations in the city. Video recordings of police’s interaction with the public would make officials act politely and responsibly as they are often blamed for taking bribes and being rude with the citizens.
