FIR registered after viral video shows woman driver assaulting biker

A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against a woman, days after a video went viral online showing her abusing a bike rider, Syed Irfan, in Islamabad.

The FIR, filed at the Women’s Police Station in Islamabad’s Sector G-7 on Tuesday, stated that the unknown woman hit the rider from behind with her silver Toyota Corolla on Monday around 5 PM at Sector G-6, outside Polyclinic Hospital.

“When I [Irfan] stopped, the woman again attempted to hit me at high speed,” the FIR stated, prompting the rider to put his hand on the car bonnet, causing the bike to fall to the ground.

Additionally, the FIR stated that when the car stopped, the woman instantly came out and physically assaulted the rider. “While abusing, the woman beat and threatened to kill me. The unknown woman attempted to kill me through negligence, carelessness, and over-speeding,” the FIR read.

In the viral video, the woman can be heard hurling abusive words while committing an offence against the rider, whereas the rider can be heard giving clarifications to the woman.

“How dare you touch my car? Why did you hit my car?” the woman shouted at the rider, arguing that her car was more expensive than his bike. Bystanders tried to calm the situation, but the woman persisted in her aggressive behaviour before finally leaving in her car.

Media reports claim that police have begun raids to arrest the accused woman, identified as Masooma Bibi, a resident of Bani Gala.

Since the video went viral, it has sparked outrage online, with social media users lambasting her for assaulting the rider.

A social media user wrote, “Instead of apologising after hitting the motorbike rider, she started beating the poor boy and also hurling nasty abuses. No one is going to question the elite who oppress the poor.”

“It is possible that the Bykea rider was at fault, but the woman acted as if she were the judge. She hurled obscene insults at the Bykea rider and humiliated him. Does the poor have no one to speak for them? Will the Islamabad police take any action against the woman?” another user opined.

One user, however, asserted that the woman was mentally unfit. In response, a netizen questioned how she could take the car on the road if she was mentally unfit, arguing that this is a tactic used to shield the elite from accountability.

Cop drives son to end of race on bike during police recruitment test

A police constable in Dera Ghazi Khan has been suspended after helping his son cheat in a recruitment test for new hirings.

Constable Tauseef, stationed at the Sakhi Sarwar station, brought his son Adeel to the finish lane on his motorcycle, while all other contestants had to run on foot.

Constable Tauseef was arrested on the spot while his son Adeel managed to escape. RPO Dera Ghazi Khan Captain (Retd.) Sajjad Hassan Khan and DPO Syed Ali Kazmi ordered the force to conduct an inquiry into the matter.

Officials have also suspended the issuance of recruitment permits for officers posted at Sakhi Sarwar police station so that the recruitment process can continue without more interference.

The 1600- meter race is considered mandatory in physical tests conducted for recruitment in the police force. It usually has to be finished within six minutes and thirty seconds. For candidates older than the age of 35, the race is usually shortened to 1400 meters while the stipulated time is lengthened to nine minutes.

Other parts of the physical test include a long jump and a high jump, with candidates getting three chances to finish the 3.8 meters and 1.1 meters distances respectively.

For female candidates, the race is shortened to 800 meters while the time is a crisp four and a half minutes.

Parliamentarians want junk food banned in schools

A sub-committee of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) called for a ban on fizzy drinks ahnd junk food in schools, as Pakistan earns the undesirable rank of the leading country for diabetes.

Chaired by Zahra Wadood Fatemi, the panel stressed that sugar consumption must be brought down in the country, pointing towards canned goods, packaged food and fizzy drinks as the prime cause of the “silent killer” disease.

The panel recommended bringing regulations on private school canteens up to the same stringent rules that are applied in government schools.

The International Diabetes Forum estimates that Pakistan has a diabetes rate of 26.7 percent adults of the population, one of the highest in the world. In 2021, Pakistan had almost 33 million adult diabetic patients. This number is set to balloon to 62 million by 2045 if strict preventive measures are not taken.

Fizzy and sugary drinks are one of the main culprits of causing diabetes. A 2010 study showed that the risk of developing diabetes is 26 percent higher for people who consume one or more sugary or fizzy drink per day.

Even artificial sweetners, such as are used for ‘Zero’ or ‘Low cal’ versions of these drinks have links to diabetes.

Maryam Nawaz, Bilawal Bhutto or Fazlur Rehman: Here is Sher Afzal Marwat’s pick for lunch

An undated video circulating on social media shows a reporter asking maverick politician Sher Afzal Marwat whom he would prefer to have lunch with, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz, Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari or Chief Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

Recently expelled from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Marwat, known for being forthright, took no time in choosing Bhutto for lunch. “My choice is Bilawal Bhutto,” he said.

On being asked about the reason behind choosing the Chairman PPP, Marwat asserted, “Bilawal is the son of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and the grandson of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (late). This family has made sacrifices for democracy. So I have respect for Bilawal.”

The reporter then moved to another question. “If Bilawal Bhutto asked you which parliamentarian he should marry, whom would you suggest,” the reporter asked. “I don’t believe that Bilawal should marry a parliamentarian,” Marwat responded.

When pressed further on whether Chairman PPP should marry someone from the entertainment world or another profession, Marwat said, “I would give my advice privately, not publicly.” However, he did emphasise that Bhutto should get married now.

The video is going viral on social media, a day after Marwat, while speaking to a private media outlet, had remarked that former Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif was wrongfully removed, alluding to his 2017 disqualification from power over undeclared assets.

Marwat said, “Definitely, Nawaz Sharif was wrongfully removed. Removing him for not receiving a salary from his son was [unjustified],” adding that Sharif could have been disqualified in the Panama Papers case or the Avenfield case instead.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) firebrand further alleged that former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General (r) Qamar Javed Bajwa was involved in orchestrating Sharif’s removal from office, noting that ex-Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar facilitated Bajwa.

He also alleged that PTI leader Raoof Hassan was removed as the party’s information secretary owing to the fact that he used to record all political committee meetings and then sell them.

Asked about who he was selling the information to, Marwat said that Hassan was selling information to media and YouTubers. “He [Hassan] used to inform the establishment about everything,” he alleged.

Marwat’s statement against PRI leaders came after being expelled from PTI last week. A notification issued on PTI’s official X (formerly Twitter) account had said, “Further to the Show Cause Notice issued to Mr Sher Afzal Marwat and his subsequent reply, the party has considered his reply and also his actions subject to the Show Cause notice.”

“Taking both these aspects into consideration and on the instructions of Founding Chairman Imran Khan, Mr. Sher Afzal Marwat is being expelled from the party with immediate effect.”

Jinnah in suede jacket, Aziz Bhatti on a podcast: Pakistani creator brings heroes to life with AI

What would a young Quaid-e-Azam look like wearing a suede jacket if his hair was not carefully combed back? What would Aziz Bhatti Shaheed look like with a 5 o’clock stubble, talking on a podcast after a long day of defending the country’s borders?

These are questions we never asked because there was no possible way of knowing the answer. But perhaps now we can imagine the unimaginable.

AI has opened a world of possibilities, most notably in recreating people long gone from this world.

Instagram account @shoaibsaadat posts AI rendered videos on the social media platform. Of late, the account has started sharing haunting yet beautiful videos of our military and civilian heroes in situations and outfits we have never imagined them in.

One video shows Jinnah and Iqbal reimagined as they travel through what we presume is the London tube. In one frame, a young Jinnah smiles at the camera, his unruly hair and jacket making him look uber cool. Iqbal, meanwhile, alternates between a gritty working class hero and an Edwardian gentleman.

Another poignant video shows military martyrs who received the Nishaan-e-Haider talking in podcast shows. Aziz Bhatti Shaheed has a lock of hair falling over his forehead while Rashid Minhas Shaheed is still wearing his flying goggles on his head.

Allama Mohammad Iqbal laughs in one magical video which shows famous Urdu poets attending podcasts. Others featured in the amazing video include a young Parveen Shakir, a handsome Baba Bulleh Shah and Habib Jalib and Faiz being debonair.

We hope more people reimagine our history and let us see legendary figures in a new light.

  • ‘Bushra Bibi kept in isolation to pressurise me,’ Imran Khan alleges

‘Bushra Bibi kept in isolation to pressurise me,’ Imran Khan alleges

Aleema Khan, the sister of incarcerated former Premier Imran Khan, has alleged that former First Lady Bushra Bibi has been denied access to her husband for the past three weeks.

Speaking outside Adiala Jail Rawalpindi on Tuesday (today), Aleema stated that after they inquired why the meeting had not been held, the jail administration informed them that they had been given orders against Bushra Bibi’s meeting with Imran Khan.

“Bushra Bibi was placed in isolation to break her down,” Aleema quoted her brother as saying.

Revealing the purpose behind Bushra’s isolation, she quoted her brother as saying, “They want to pressure me into accepting their demands.” However, when asked about the nature of the demands, Aleema said that Khan was unaware of them.

She also claimed that she held a protest at the Adiala Jail against the restrictions imposed on Imran Khan’s meeting with Bushra Bibi. “We received a message that if the protest continues, then our meetings with Khan in jail will also be suspended,” she added.

Additionally, Imran Khan had made it clear that he would not make any deal “no matter how much pressure they exert,” Aleema said, quoting her brother.

An accountability court in the federal capital sentenced Imran Khan to 14 years in prison and his wife to seven years last month.

The former premier and his wife were fined Rs. 1 million and Rs. 0.5 million, respectively. If they fail to pay the fines, the ex-prime minister will serve an additional six months, while Bushra Bibi will serve three more months.

According to the verdict, ex-PM Imran Khan was convicted of “corrupt practices” and “misuse of authority,” while the former First Lady was sentenced for “involvement in illegal activities.”

The 148-page verdict mentioned that Bibi’s role was limited to aiding and abetting the corruption offences, which is considered a mitigating circumstance in her sentencing.

Following the announcement of the 190-million-pound verdict, Bushra Bibi was instantly arrested.

It should be noted here that Bushra Bibi was arrested four months after she was released on bail in the Tosha Khana case in October 2024.

Lahore High Court CJ angry at privacy breach of rape victims

Chief Justice Aalia Neelum of the Lahore High Court has  expressed dissatisfaction that the identity of rape and sexual assault victims is not kept private, adding that maintaining that privacy is very important.

The Chief Justice was heading a full bench of the Lahore High Court, looking into the implementation of Anti-Rape Act 2021.

While admitting that evidence must be presented in court, she said that video and audio recordings and other evidences must be legally secured under the Qanun-i-Shahadat (the law of evidence).

Punjab Prosecutor General Syed Farhad Ali Shah, acting Advocate General of Punjab Baleeghur Rehman Chaudhry and Inspector General of Police Dr Usman Anwar appeared before the bench which also included Justice Ali Zia Bajwa and Justice Farooq Haider.

The advocate general submitted a report, stating that it was a federal law with certain gaps.

Chief Justice Aalia Neelum then said, “This is like putting the court and the nation on a wild goose chase.”

The court also expressed unhappiness on the absence of the Attorney General who was reportedly in Islamabad.

The IGP informed the court that there had been 5,000 cases of abduction and 7,000 honour killings of women.

He stressed that special officers are being trained to handle investigative matters.

The bench then adjourned the hearing.

  • VIDEO: ‘This calls for another slap,’ says Fawad Ch in response to PTI’s press release

VIDEO: ‘This calls for another slap,’ says Fawad Ch in response to PTI’s press release

Former Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry on Monday said that a press release against him by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was issued against party founder Imran Khan’s directive.

The PTI political committee on Saturday issued a statement on PTI’s official X (formerly Twitter) account condemning Chaudhry’s violence against lawyer Shoaib Shaheen. The scuffle between them occurred outside Adiala Jail Rawalpindi’s gate no. five on Friday.

Speaking on a private media outlet, Chaudhry said that in the presence of PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Khan at Adiala Jail, Imran Khan denied that he instructed the party to issue the press release against him.

When the programme host said that the condemnation press release appears to be written by the PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja and asked whether Raja would be the next target of Chaudhry’s violence, the former Minister of Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry sarcastically responded that Raja should correct his behaviour so that he doesn’t get beaten up.

The condemnation’s statement dubbed Chaudhry’s action a “crude and callous demonstration of the animal instinct over logic and reason.”

Further terming Chaudhry’s action “a criminal act”, the statement said, “It is not a slap on the face of Mr. Shoaib Shaheen alone. It is a slap on the face of PTI.”

When asked by the host if Chaudhry was going to slap someone else, he replied that the press release sure called for one. “These two or three people do not have any other treatment,” he said, bursting into laughter.

Additionally, the statement read, “His dastardly conduct further reflects the frustration that Fawad Chaudhry may be suffering from when, as per instructions of the Founder Chairman Mr. Imran Ahmad Khan Niazi, the party announced its complete dissociation from his person. It was also announced that Mr. Fawad Chaudhry would not represent the party at any forum in any manner whatsoever.”

“The Political Committee of PTI takes a serious note of the incident and condemns Mr. Fawad Chaudhry’s gross demeanour in the strongest possible words. The Political Committee also reiterates its complete support for Mr. Shoaib Shaheen for his sagacity in the face of adversity. We salute his courage and composure in dealing with an ugly situation. Despite the dastardly provocation, we call upon our activists and workers to remain peaceful. The party shall prevail.”

He lambasted PTI leaders, saying that Imran Khan’s name is being misused. “Owing to their [party leaders] assistance, Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and Yasmin Rashid are in jail,” he alleged.

Asked about whether the party founder has not expelled Chaudhry from the party and if he is still associated with the party, he said, “Yes, 100 per cent.”

  • Sindh govt abolishes paid parking in Karachi

Sindh govt abolishes paid parking in Karachi

The Sindh government has announced the abolition of all charged parking starting Monday, February 17.

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon, speaking to the media, said that any charged parking after today will be illegal. He urged journalists to inform the government if they notice any instances of charged parking.

Earlier, while highlighting that accidents occur daily on the roads of Sehwan and Hyderabad, the minister clarified that these roads do not fall under the jurisdiction of Sindh but belong to the federal government. He asserted that the responsibility for their construction lies with the National Highway Authority.

He further stated that the Punjab Information Minister should do his homework before making statements. The Sindh government had already paid the federal government for the construction of this road, but the failure of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N) to complete it is its failure.

However, Sherjeel Memon has assured that the Sindh government will provide complete security for the Cricket Champions Trophy starting February 19.

  • Nawaz Sharif was removed wrongfully, says Sher Afzal Marwat

Nawaz Sharif was removed wrongfully, says Sher Afzal Marwat

Maverick leader Sher Afzal Marwat on Monday claimed that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif was wrongfully removed, alluding to his 2017 disqualification from power over undeclared assets.

Speaking on a private media channel, Marwat asserted, “Definitely, Nawaz Sharif was wrongfully removed. Removing him for not receiving a salary from his son was [unjustified],” adding that Sharif could have been disqualified in the Panama Papers case or the Avenfield case instead.

When told that such remarks might displease many of his companions, Marwat said, “I cannot tell a lie merely to make my party happy. I am a lawyer of the Supreme Court of Pakistan; I know that [Nawaz Sharif’s ouster] decision was not right.”

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) firebrand further alleged that former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General (r) Qamar Javed Bajwa was involved in orchestrating Sharif’s removal from office, noting that ex-Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar facilitated Bajwa.

“You [Marwat] were a beneficiary [of Nawaz Sharif’s removal from power]. One should acknowledge that,” the talk show host said. In response, Marwat asked, “Why are you saying that I was the beneficiary?” adding that he was speaking about Nawaz Sharif not as a PTI leader but as a lawyer.

When asked who was involved in his expulsion from PTI, the maverick leader, without naming anyone, said that the same party leaders who had previously expelled him were behind his recent ouster. “If I announce their names, then [Imran] Khan would be grieved. Khan knows very well who expelled me.”

It should be noted that PTI issued a notification of Marwat’s expulsion on Wednesday via X (formerly Twitter), which reads, “Further to the Show Cause Notice issued to Mr Sher Afzal Marwat and his subsequent reply, the party has considered his reply and also his actions subject to the Show Cause notice.”

“Taking both these aspects into consideration and on the instructions of Founding Chairman Imran Khan, Mr. Sher Afzal Marwat is being expelled from the party with immediate effect.”

Revealing that the incarcerated party founder has summoned him to Adiala Jail for a meeting, Marwat said he would visit Imran Khan soon.

“I will not take even a minute to resign,” Marwat responded when asked what he would do if Imran Khan demanded his resignation from the National Assembly, adding that he would not beg to be reinstated in the party.
