Details of PM Shehbaz, ex-ISI chief’s gifts to US officials revealed

The United States (US) State Department has published the annual accounting list of 2023 wherein the list of gifts received by President Joe Biden, First Lady Jill Biden and US intelligence officials from multiple countries, including Pakistan, has been revealed.

According to the list, Pakistani officials presented four gifts to US federal government members in 2023. Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif, on October 20, 2022, gifted President Biden a rug in a velvet case, valued at $525.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US Masood Khan, on September 9, 2023, gifted a traditional rug worth $600 to Biden’s aide and Senior Director for South Asia Eileen Laubacher.

Former Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) Director General (DG) Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum, on February 23, 2023, gifted a handcrafted table to US Senator Mark R Warner, which was priced at $120. On the same day, the then ISI chief also gifted a handcrafted table worth $152 to US Senator Jack Reed.

Meanwhile, Indian PM Narendra Modi topped the list by giving the most expensive present – a 7.5-carat diamond – costing $20,000 dollars, to First Lady Jill Biden.

India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval gifted US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan two distinct items – a silver Jaguar statue in January 2023 worth $485 and a wooden elephant sculpture worth $638 in July 2023.

The report also revealed that the Indian premier’s diamond was retained for official use in the White House’s East Wing while other gifts to the president and first lady were sent to the archives.

According to the document, Ukrainian Ambassador to the US Oksana Markarova gifted Jill a flower brooch valued at $14,063.

It merits a mention that gift-giving is a major part of foreign relations, which is viewed as a sign of respect and friendship between nations.

As part of tradition, several employees of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) also received lavish gifts including luxury watches, perfume and jewellery. The gifts were priced at a total of over $132,000.

However, nearly all gifts to CIA employees were destroyed under US government’s strict rules about what officials can do with gifts to avoid apparent or actual bribery from foreign governments.

Under law, federal employees are not allowed to accept gifts over a certain value “unless refusal of the gift would cause offence or embarrassment or would otherwise adversely affect the foreign relations of the US”.

Kurram DC, FC personnel among four injured in attack on aid convoy

Days after a peace accord was signed between warring tribes in the troubled Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Deputy Commissioner (DC) Javedullah Mehsud and three others were injured as unknown assailants opened fire on an aid convoy in Lower Kurram.

According to reports, the district administration said that unidentified armed men targeted the DC’s convoy in the Bagan area of Lower Kurram during the wee hours of Saturday. Mehsud was shifted to a hospital in injured condition and later airlifted to Peshawar.

The claim was reported after KP CM’s Information Advisor, Barrister Saif, said that arrangements were being made to shift the DC to Peshawar. “His condition is said to be out of danger,” Saif said.

Conflicting reports, however, maintained that the helicopter never arrived in Kurram and had to return to Peshawar due to bad weather. A report by Khorasan Diary also said that the DC had received a total of three bullet injuries to his shoulder and legs and lost a lot of blood.

    1735982914-HERKRJ91XP.jpg

“He will be shifted to Thall Hospital from Alizai soon. Four injured have been brought to the hospital in Alizai, that include: Deputy Commissioner Kurram Javedullah Mehsud, Police Constable Misal Khan, Frontier Corps Soldier Rahimullah, Frontier Corps Soldier Rizwan [sic],” it added.

Intermittent firing is continuing in the Bagan area of Lower Kurram, reports said.

Kohat Regional Police Officer (RPO), while talking to a private media outlet, said that one of the local warring groups was behind the incident. However, a search operation had been launched in the area to find the accused.

The incident has been condemned by KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, who said that the firing on an aid convoy was “clear proof of incompetence and failure” of the provincial government.

Meanwhile, a convoy carrying food and other daily items, which was expected to leave from Thall tehsil of Hangu towards Kurram, was stopped due to the situation in the area.

It merits a mention that on January 1, a peace agreement was reached between the warring groups, under which it was agreed that the Tall-Parachinar Highway was to be opened after weeks of closure.

The reopening of the highway remains critical to end the humanitarian crisis that unfolded in Parachinar due to weeks-long violent disputes.

  • Lahore High Court orders high-earning groom to raise haq mehar

Lahore High Court orders high-earning groom to raise haq mehar

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday ordered a high-earning groom to increase the haq mehr from $1,000 to $10,000 based on his affordability.

LHC’s Justice Farooq Haider allowed a woman who married of her own choice to go with her husband while directing the husband to raise the dower amount.

The case was filed by the woman’s father, who was seeking the recovery of his daughter from the alleged illegal custody of her supposed husband.

After the habeas corpus petition was filed by the father, the court sent a notice to the couple, for which they were brought before the court by the local police.

During the course of the hearing, the woman responded to the court’s inquiry by stating that she was an adult and had married of her own free will. She denied charges of being abducted or threatened by her husband and, in her statement, told the court that she wanted to go with her husband and not with her father.

However, Justice Farooq Haider asked the woman’s husband about his monthly income, to which he replied that he worked in the United States and earned $2,000 (more than 5,55,000 rupees) per month.

On this, the high court said that $1,000 (more than 2,78,000 rupees) in haq mehr was insufficient and observed that the amount should be enhanced to ensure the woman’s security in the marriage.

As per the court’s direction, the bridegroom submitted an affidavit in the court setting the amount of haq mehar at 10,000 dollars.

Additionally, the judge also disposed of the habeas corpus petition based on the father’s plea for the recovery of the woman from the alleged confinement of her husband in light of her statements.

The matters of dower and dowery have been in the legal discourse previously as well.

On December 6, 2023, the Supreme Court ruled that haq mahr must be paid by the husband whenever the wife demands it, not just in the event of divorce. Mahr is the mandatory payment or gift from the groom to the bride at the time of marriage based on his affordability. It is a fundamental part of an Islamic marriage contract and is considered the bride’s exclusive right.

  • ‘Will come out again for Imran Khan,’ pardoned May 9 convict says

‘Will come out again for Imran Khan,’ pardoned May 9 convict says

A pardoned May 9 rioter has said that he would once again take to streets whenever jailed former prime minister (PM) Imran Khan or leadership of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) asked for it.

“On May 9 [2023], Imran Khan was arrested [and] our leadership told us to hold a peaceful protest,” said Said Alam, who was pardoned days after a military court sentenced him to two years in prison over his involvement in the May 9 riots.

He accused authorities of forcing him to claim that Khan’s speeches had “brainwashed” him, but said that he refused to comply. “I was also told to record a statement against my MPA and MNA [for inciting violence], which too I declined.”

“I have spent 20 months in jail […] my sacrifices are nothing as compared to those who lost their lives while protesting on May 9, 2023, and November 26, 2024,” he said, alleging that his only crime was being a supporter of Khan.

To a question about the conditions in which May 9 rioters were kept, Alam said that they had not subjected to physical violence. However, he added, they sure went through mental agony.

“We [under-trial prisoners and convicts] were not allowed to meet anyone in jail. We were kept isolated,” Alam said, adding that they were allowed to read the newspaper and use a mobile phone.

When asked about the mercy petitions that led to the release of 19 rioters soon after a total of 85 were convicted by a military court, he said they were filed at the time of their transfer to civilian jails. “We were told to confess to our actions in mercy petitions.”

It merits a mention that hundreds were arrested following nationwide violent protests led by the PTI following PTI founder Imran Khan’s arrest on May 9, 2023.

At least 10 people lost their lives, and over a hundred others sustained injuries in the protests that continued on May 9 and May 10. Around 40 public buildings and military installations were attacked by the rioters.

Alam’s interview comes hours after his release from jail. He was among the 85 rioters who have so far been convicted by a military court in connection with attacks on military establishments.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), a total of 67 convicts had filed mercy petitions, of which 48 were processed for appeal. Of the 48, 19 were pardoned on humanitarian grounds.

  • Is establishment happy with Maryam Nawaz’s performance?

Is establishment happy with Maryam Nawaz’s performance?

Senior analyst Najam Sethi has revealed whether the military establishment is satisfied with Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz’s performance in the province during his show on Samaa News.

“Maryam Nawaz is doing an excellent job as Chief Minister in Punjab. She isn’t accepting any political favours, even for her own party MNAs and MPAs. At the same time, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is saying that they had an agreement for their accommodation,” stated Najam Sethi.

“Establishment is happy with Maryam Nawaz’s role as the CM of Punjab. If they’re happy with Shehbaz Sharif then they’re happy with Maryam as well. Because she’s running the administration on merit.  Critics can say anything about her performance, but there is no denying the fact that she’s doing everything on merit,” said the former PCB Chairman.

Najam Sethi also revealed that the PPP is not happy with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz because she does not listen to anyone asking for political favours.

It merits a mention here that Governor Punjab Saleem Haider, who belongs to PPP,  on November 23 publicly complained that his party was not being taken on board by the ruling PML-N in the decision-making process.

Punjab Governor Saleem Haider had also showed his frustration with the ruling party in the province by delaying the appointment of vice-chancellors to universities. “Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has become an empress. She never calls or consults me on issues of merit,” he stated, while referring to the appointment of vice-chancellors.

The PPP Governor also warned Maryam Nawaz: “PML-N government will come to its knees if PPP withdraws its support.”

“Over the past six months, I tried to contact her repeatedly by phone but got zero response as she never consulted with us on any issue. So now I won’t meet her,” he said.

While referring to PPP’s frustration with Maryam Nawaz, Sethi stated: “Because no unjust transfers are being carried out among bureaucrats, Deputy Commissioners aren’t being transferred, so MNAs and MPAs are worried. PPP is very angry with her over this because, according to them, they should be accommodated in four or five regions where PPP ministers are in power.”

The former PCB chairman opined that contention between PPP and Maryam Nawaz became such a serious issue that now the Chief Minister Punjab has started listening to them.

  • Pakistan becomes member of UN Security Council for next two years

Pakistan becomes member of UN Security Council for next two years

Pakistan has started the new year by joining the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for a two-year term as a non-permanent member.

As Pakistan embarked on the term, it is important to note that this is the country’s eighth term on the council.

Pakistan is replacing Japan with the formal election taking place back in June 2024.

Additionally, Pakistan occupies one of the two Asia-Pacific seats on the Security Council.

Pakistan will get the chance to preside over the council in July, which is a key opportunity to set the agenda and foster dialogue on a global platform.

Furthermore, the membership will also help secure a seat on the Islamic State and Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee, which performs the role of designating individuals and groups associated with the extremist organisations as terrorists and imposing sanctions on them.

As per the UN’s rule book, i.e. the UN Charter, only permanent members hold veto power in the council.

However, non-permanent members can influence terrorism-related sanctions committees significantly, where decisions are made by consensus under established norms.

This will provide Pakistan with an opportunity to highlight cross-border terrorist attacks from Afghanistan by the terrorist groups associated with the militant Islamic State group and Al Qaeda.

In a ceremony held at UNSC, the Pakistani flag was hoisted by the country’s Permanent Representative at the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmed. While addressing the ceremony, he said that Pakistan will continue to raise a voice for the innocent and the oppressed. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar told the media, “Pakistan will collaborate with all UN member states to uphold the principles of the UN Charter, prevent war, promote peace, foster global prosperity and ensure universal respect for human rights.”

Delivering his remarks at a reception hosted for Islamabad-based envoys to mark the beginning of Pakistan’s term as a non-permanent member of the UNSC for 2025-2026, he affirmed Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism,  international law, peaceful settlement of disputes and friendly relations with countries around the world.

  • Opp leaders told to take off socks, rings before meeting Imran Khan

Opp leaders told to take off socks, rings before meeting Imran Khan

Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) chief Sahibzada Hamid Raza has revealed that he among other opposition leaders, including those belonging to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), were told to take off their socks and rings before meeting former prime minister (PM) Imran Khan in jail.

Appearing on ARY News programme ‘Off The Record’, Raza was asked if PM Shehbaz Sharif’s political aide Rana Sanaullah advised opposition leaders to take notes of the meeting with Khan in jail.

Host Kashif Abbasi’s question was in reference to the ongoing negotiations between the government and opposition, and PTI leaders’ repeated statements regarding Khan being the “only decision-making authority” for the party when it came to talks with the government.

Responding to the question, the SIC chief asked how could they have taken notes when they weren’t even allowed to carry a paper or pencil with them.

Talking about the strict security measures at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, Raza claimed that security had even told them to take off their socks and rings before meeting the incarcerated PTI founder. It happened rather often, he added.

“Security checks we go through after meeting Imran Khan are even stricter,” Raza said, sharing how all meetings with the jailed former premier were held in a “highly controlled environment”.

The SIC chief’s statements come after the government’s negotiation committee, during the second round of government-PTI talks on Thursday, advised opposition leaders to submit their demands in writing.

“The talks concluded with all participants deciding to sit together for the betterment of Pakistan [and] to talk about issues such as economy and terrorism among other things,” National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, who chaired the meeting, told reporters in Islamabad.

Earlier, Rana Sanaullah had also hinted at government tabling certain demands during the talks, however, Raza said that it did not happen.

“They [government members] did not demand anything. In fact, despite us presenting them with hard facts, members of the government’s negotiation committee behaved well. No heated debates erupted during the meeting,” he said.

During the show, Raza also expressed hope that Khan would be released very soon.

While the country eagerly waits for outcome of the currently ongoing negotiations, government members have rubbished claims of backchannel talks between the PTI, government or state institutions.

The statements from government members come amid reports of a “separate negotiation channel” being established to bypass official talks between government and PTI’s negotiating committees.

  • Ali Amin Gandapur pays seven crore rupees fee to Imran Khan’s lawyers in one month, says Sher Afzal Marwat

Ali Amin Gandapur pays seven crore rupees fee to Imran Khan’s lawyers in one month, says Sher Afzal Marwat

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Sher Afzal Khan Marwat has claimed that Chief Minister (CM) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Ali Amin Gandapur paid seven crore rupees fee to party founder Imran Khan’s lawyer.

Speaking with Azaad Urdu, Marwat expressed disappointment over the massive fees which are being paid to former Premier Imran Khan’s lawyer. “It is not justified that more than a crore rupees is paid to lawyers in one case,” he stated.

“It is in my knowledge that exorbitant fees have been paid to lawyers. The fees paid to the lawyers are so high that, if calculated, each day Imran Khan spends in jail is costing more than lac,” he said.

However, Marwat clarified that Imran Khan nominated lawyers for his cases.

He emphasised that there should have been negotiations regarding the fees. “I am a lawyer myself, and I know what costs are reasonable [for lawyer fee],” he added.

Sher Afzal Marwat stressed, “Having money doesn’t mean that there should be no accountability. There must be proper financial transparency with the lawyers, and a reasonable fee should be paid to lawyers.”

Additionally, the PTI leader also said that he had not charged a single rupee when he was Imran Khan’s counsel in multiple cases.

Moreover, Marwat maintained that he had represented several PTI leaders, including CM KP Ali Amin Gandapur, former Speaker of National Assembly Asad Qaiser and Member National Assembly (MNA) Shandana Gulzar Khan in courts and did not charge them even a single penny.

Asked about how much fee he charged for one case, Marwat linked his fee to the client’s financial conditions: “Sometimes, I had charged one crore from a client who could afford it; however, apart from Imran Khan and PTI leaders, I have taken two cases free of charge.”

Commenting on the 34-year sentence of former CM Gilgit Baltistan (GB) Khalid Khurshid, Marwat made a witty jab at the GB court by saying that life imprisonment in Pakistan is limited to 25 years only if someone killed a person.

Marwat said he wants to salute the GB judiciary for surpassing the Pakistani judiciary in terms of justice by sentencing Khalid Khurshid for 34-years.

A GB anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Tuesday sentenced ex-CM Khalid Khurshid Khan to 34 years in prison for threatening security institutions at a party rally in July last year.

  • ‘Bushra Bibi holding actual negotiations somewhere else’

‘Bushra Bibi holding actual negotiations somewhere else’

Senior journalist Nusrat Javed has claimed that talks between the government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) committees were only a façade because actual negotiations were being held by Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi.

“Real negotiations are being held by Bushra Bibi. I told you this before as well… that two days ago, she went to negotiate somewhere without any security. And today, she went to Adiala Jail in a bulletproof car to meet Khan,” the journalist said during his show on Public News.

He also claimed that the PTI had categorically been conveyed to accept responsibility for May 9 riots and ask for forgiveness. “PTI leaders maintain if they concede to these demands, then, in return, they want the release of all PTI workers from prison, including those whom military courts have convicted. This is the bone of contention between both sides now.”

Nusrat also said that Imran Khan would have to take the first step in order to achieve a positive outcome of the ongoing talks.

It merits a mention that the government and PTI, for the first time in almost two years, have broken ice by agreeing to talk their issue out for “greater national interests”. First round of talks was held last week whereas the second round is scheduled for today (Jan 2). Both sides are expected to formally present their demands during today’s session.

National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq is reportedly facilitating and leading the negotiations during which the PTI has repeatedly expressed concerns over authorities alleged campaign to “dismantle” the opposition party.

PTI has also demanded the release of all its workers from prison, and sought a judicial commission to prove violent incidents that took place following Khan’s arrest in May 2023 as well as during the party’s march on Islamabad on November 26.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Wednesday said that his party would yet again take to streets if the ongoing dialogue ends inconclusively. He also confirmed that the PTI founder had permitted party leaders to continue holding talks with the government for the sake of the country.

Gandapur also reiterated his party’s demands for release of PTI founder and former premier Khan as well as other leaders and workers locked up in different jails across the country.

Amid unconfirmed reports of demands, deals and breakthroughs, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Irfan Siddiqui, who is a part of the government’s negotiation committee, has said that the ruling party would consult all coalition partners on PTI’s charter of demands.

  • May 9 riots: Military pardons 19 convicts on humanitarian grounds

May 9 riots: Military pardons 19 convicts on humanitarian grounds

The military has pardoned 19 convicts in the May 9 riots case on humanitarian grounds, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Thursday.

According to the military media wing, a total of 67 convicts had filed mercy petitions, of which 48 have been processed for appeal. The pleas of 19 convicts have been accepted “purely on humanitarian grounds under the law”.

The development comes weeks after military courts sentenced a total of 85 people in connection with attacks on state establishments following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in May 2023.

At least 10 people lost their lives and over a hundred others sustained injuries in the violent protests that continued on May 9 and May 10. Approximately 40 public buildings and military installations were attacked by rioters. These included Lahore Corps Commander’s House (Jinnah House), Askari Tower in Lahore, General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, ISI Office in Faisalabad, FC Fort in Chakdara, Radio Pakistan building in Peshawar, Toll Plaza at Swat Motorway and the Mianwali Air Base.

In December, the ISPR had in two separate statements announced the convictions of 25 and 60 under-trial prisoners by military courts. The convicts had been sentenced to jail terms ranging from two to 10 years for their involvement in the nationwide riots. PTI founder and former prime minister Khan’s nephew, Hassaan Khan Niazi, was also among the convicts and was sentenced to 10 years in jail for the attack on the residence of Lahore Corps Commander (Jinnah House).

On Thursday, the military’s media wing said that 19 individuals whose mercy petitions were accepted would be released after completion of procedural formalities.

“The remission of punishments is a testament to the strength of due process and fairness, which ensures that justice is served while also taking into account the principles of compassion and mercy,” it added.

    Among the freed convicts are:
