Flash floods, landslides leave 27 dead across GB, AJK and Bajaur

Heavy rains this week have caused flash floods and landslides in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur area late Thursday, killing at least 27 people, including women and children.

Three people, including a woman, were killed in Khalthi Valley, Ghizer, where many homes were buried under debris, according to GB government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq.

As rescue teams search the area, three more people are still missing.

In Diamer’s Bonar, a brother and sister were swept away by floodwaters, while a child was injured in a landslide on Babusar road. Homes, schools, water tanks, and farms were all damaged by flash floods in Ghizer’s Yasin Thoi.

Roads in Baltistan and Sadpara have been blocked by landslides, and Thor reported damage in the Diamer and Astore valleys. Traffic between GB and the rest of the country suffered delays in Kohistan due to a damaged bridge on the Karakoram Highway.

Emergency measures have been imposed in several parts of GB, with the GB Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA) and Rescue 1122 on high alert. “This is a testing time for Gilgit-Baltistan,” said Faraq, adding that all available resources were being mobilised to help those affected.

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) reports that at least eight people have died and two more have been injured in AJK. In Naseerabad, Muzaffarabad, a cloudburst killed six members of one family.

While floods in Samahni’s Bhimbar drain washed away a tourist car, heavy rain in the Bagh area forced rivers to overflow. All passengers were rescued.

Water levels have also risen sharply in Jhelum Valley, Samahni, Hattian Bala and Neelum Valley. In Muzaffarabad and nearby areas, over 30 houses, shops and other properties have been damaged or destroyed, and mobile phone services have been suspended in several mountainous regions.

AJK Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwar ul Haq chaired an emergency SDMA meeting, ordering the relocation of residents from riverbanks to safer areas.

He also approved financial aid for affected families and housing for those who lost their homes, along with emergency checkpoints to monitor water resources.

Public and private schools will remain closed on August 15 and 16 due to continued heavy rains and landslide risks.

More than 700 tourists, including more than 300 women and children, were left stranded in Ratti Gali, Neelum Valley, after a cloudburst damaged parts of the road, according to AJK Information Minister Mazhar Saeed.

Bad weather has prevented their evacuation, and free accommodation has been arranged with help from locals.

Heavy rains caused flash floods and landslides in Jabrrai and Salarzai, resulting in nine deaths and four injuries in KP’s Bajaur district. Villages were inundated, sweeping away homes and residents.

This year’s monsoon has caused widespread devastation across Pakistan, with floods and landslides claiming more than 300 lives nationwide.

From August 14 to 17, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning of more rain, wind, and thundershowers in Islamabad, AJK, upper Punjab, KP, and GB.

  • Govt introduces digital fuel monitoring to curb smuggling, end fuel black market

Govt introduces digital fuel monitoring to curb smuggling, end fuel black market

The government has decided to digitally track every litre of petroleum products at every step of the process to reduce petroleum theft, smuggling, adulteration and misappropriation. According to reports, authorities will track fuel in real-time, following processes related to import, refinement, storage, transit, and final sale.

The National Assembly passed the Petroleum Amendment Act 2025 earlier this week, allowing authorities to monitor petroleum products through digital systems and with the help of enforcement agencies. This could lead to annual revenues potentially increasing by up to Rs500 billion.

The amendment makes changes to the nine-decade-old Petroleum Act 1934.  Under the amendment, deputy and assistant commissioners will be given enforcement powers, such as seizing illegally stored or smuggled petroleum products. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) has reportedly engaged with market stakeholders to guarantee a seamless transition to the new system.

The amendment spells great news for domestic refineries and oil marketing companies, as oil and gas companies have been campaigning for a crackdown on smuggling, which hurts businesses that are compliant with the legislation.

Fuel stations that purchase smuggled petroleum products evade taxes and duties, allowing for the generation of supernormal profits for all those involved in the malpractice.

The new digital system is expected to encourage pump owners to comply with the law, as ensuring that every entity is subject to the same rules will reduce the incentive to avoid compliance. Moreover, the government has also decided to slap fines on petroleum businesses that engage in dishonest behaviour.

A Rs1 million fine on any company convicted of importing, storing, refining, moving or supplying illegally procured petroleum products. To discourage individuals from repeatedly engaging in the illegal sale of petroleum, those found to be violating the legislation repeatedly will have to face a larger fine of Rs5 million.

Moreover, the owner of a facility with an invalid license will be liable to pay a Rs10 million fine to the government. Facility owners who possess an expired licence will be given six months to ensure their licences are renewed, after which they can be fined Rs1 million for non-cooperation.

Any facility found to be storing or trading smuggled petroleum will be sealed immediately, along with a seizure of all assets. Reports reveal that such facilities will also face a fine of Rs100 million.

Deadly celebration: Minor among three dead in Karachi aerial firing on Independence Day

The country’s 78th Independence Anniversary celebrations in Karachi took a tragic turn as aerial firing claimed three lives and injured 82 people across the city.

According to reports, the incidents occurred within just one hour, leaving three families devastated.

In Azizabad, an eight-year-old girl was killed after being shot in the head, while elderly victims in Korangi and Lyari lost their lives after being shot in the head and neck.

Reports reveal that 30 people were injured in East Zone, 43 in West Zone and 12 in South Zone. Among the injured were 51 men, 24 women, six boys and one girl.

Sindh Inspector General (IG) Ghulam Nabi Memon took strict notice of the firing incidents, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives. He said Independence Day should not be an excuse to taking someone’s life and the police were taking action in accordance with the law.

Citywide operations led to the arrest of 57 suspects and the recovery of 57 weapons. Memon confirmed that attempted murder cases were being registered against all arrested individuals.

He urged the public to avoid aerial firing and instead celebrate in a way that brought joy rather than grief.

  • President, PM reaffirm commitment to sovereignty on Independence Day

President, PM reaffirm commitment to sovereignty on Independence Day

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday reaffirmed their commitment to the country’s sovereignty as the nation celebrated Pakistan’s 78th Independence Anniversary.

In messages of renewed unity and resilience, the leaders paid tribute to the sacrifices of the nation’s founders and martyrs, emphasising that in May this year, confrontation with India had reinforced the sanctity of Pakistan’s freedom and the resolve to safeguard it.

President Zardari said that the nation had recently reaffirmed its strength, resolve and unity in the face of external aggression.

“Our success in Marka-e-Haq and Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos is a landmark moment in our history. It was a demonstration of unshakable national will, professional excellence and united purpose. Faced with unjustified Indian aggression, Pakistan responded with clarity, courage and restraint. The world witnessed a nation that is peace-loving, but fully capable of defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said in a statement.

“This victory has given our people a sense of renewed confidence. It has lifted the morale of the people, restored faith in our institutions and enhanced Pakistan’s stature on the global stage. Today, the world sees Pakistan as a country that seeks peace but does not bow to coercion.”

The president said that the moment was about more than just military success as it was also a reminder of what the nation could achieve when “united, focused and committed to a common goal”.

“Let us now channel this spirit into our economic revival, educational reform, technological advancement, institutional development and environmental resilience. The same discipline, courage and clarity that led to our recent success against India can lead us toward victory in eradicating poverty, creating opportunities for our people, and building a just and inclusive society,” he said.

Expressing solidarity with the people of Indian-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, he stated that their courage and struggle for justice and their right to self-determination remained close to the nation’s hearts. “Pakistan will continue to extend its unwavering diplomatic, moral and political support until their right to self-determination is realised.”

“Let this Independence Day be a turning point in our history. Let us rise beyond our divisions and stand together for a Pakistan that is built on justice, equality, faith, and service to all. May Allah be our guide and supporter. Ameen!” he concluded.

Meanwhile, PM Shehbaz called upon all political forces and citizens to unite in the spirit of 1947 and together build a strong and prosperous Pakistan for generations to come.

“I extend my heartfelt felicitations to the nation on completion of 78 years of independence of Pakistan. I pay tribute to Father of the Nation, Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and the Thinker of Pakistan, Allama Muhammad Iqbal, who along with other resolute leaders and workers of the Independence Movement united the nation under one vision, one mission and one goal [sic],” the premier said in a post on X.

“The past 78 years tell a tale of resilience, strong faith and a hope of a bright future when as a nation, we braved several difficult challenges,” he added, linking the country’s endurance to its military success earlier this year.

“Pakistan’s historic victory in Marka-e-Haq during the four-day war imposed by India has not only reinforced the sanctity of our freedom, but has also instilled a renewed sense of ambition and national spirit in the hearts of our people, magnifying the pride and fervour of this Independence Day.”

Praising the armed forces for reviving their past glory, he said that the forces “shattered the false pride of enemy by acting as a Bunyan-um-Marsoos – a solid fortified wall” and paid tribute to martyrs “who sacrificed their lives for the sake of our freedom”.

Calling it “not merely a military conquest, but also the victory of the validation of the Two-Nation Theory”, PM Shehbaz vowed to “stand vigilant to defend and safeguard our national interests including water resources”.

Speaking on the occasion, Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori said the fireworks record was set to send a message to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, declaring, “We have shamed you before the world.” MQM-Pakistan leader Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui added, “We broke the world record in fireworks, and even India knows such a long display could turn into a volcano.”

  • Protest erupts in Islamabad over mosque demolition

Protest erupts in Islamabad over mosque demolition

Many religious groups, including Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F), joined hands on Monday to protest against the demolition of a mosque in Islamabad.

The Madni-Mosque, located near Rawal Dam Chowk in the federal capital, was demolished on Saturday night, while the Capital Development Authority (CDA) planted tree saplings at the site, which were later uprooted by protesters.

JUI-F Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Naeema Kishwar, also submitted a resolution condemning the demolition of the mosque.

Addressing the protesters, JUI-F Islamabad chapter Emir Mufti Owais Aziz announced that legal proceedings would be initiated against the demolition of the mosque, adding that the government was planning to raze 50 mosques in Islamabad and vowed to resist the move.

“If the police refuse to register the case, we will consider them enemies of Islam,” Aziz threatened, noting that razing mosques overnight was an act of hostility towards Islam.

He alleged that the Frontier Corps (FC) was illegally occupying greenbelts along Embassy Road and Margalla Road. “While mosques are being demolished in the name of beautification, no action was taken against the illegal occupation by FC on these prime roads,” he said.

As tensions rose, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, accompanied by the Islamabad commissioner, inspector general of police, and deputy commissioner, met on Sunday night with a group of clerics headed by Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidari.

In a statement, Chaudhry said the madrassa located on Murree Road was relocated with the consent of its administration. “A modern-style facility has been constructed on the new site at a cost of Rs40 million, which provides high-quality accommodation, meals and religious education to around 200 students,” he added.

  • Did Imran Khan’s son say he was looking to Israel for his father’s release

Did Imran Khan’s son say he was looking to Israel for his father’s release

A claim circulating on social media states that Kasim Khan, one of the two sons of the incarcerated founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan, in a recent interview with a US-based news channel Real America’s Voice (RAV), stated that he was looking towards Israel to secure his father’s release from prison.

    Claim

A social media user posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) on July 30 with the caption, “Kasim Goldsmith has said that my father Imran Khan made a mistake by demanding freedom from America. We are ashamed of this. Our eyes are towards Israel now. My father has done a lot for Israel and now they should help us too (sic).”

Similar claims can be seen here, here and here.

    Fact

The 39-second video clip featuring Kasim, which was shared online, did not mention Israel. In the video, Imran Khan’s son can be heard clearly saying that “we are looking to America at the moment” for support for his jailed father.

He added that a lot of people in the United States have expressed “concern” about his father’s cases, adding, “It seems like it might be the only route out at the moment.”

Kasim’s response followed the interviewee’s question: “Who are some of Imran Khan’s allies, either in Pakistan or across the globe, who can help secure Imran Khan’s release from jail?”

Verdict: The clip has been misrepresented. Kasim Khan did not say he was looking to Israel for his father’s release.

  • India harasses Pakistani diplomats, orders four to vacate homes

India harasses Pakistani diplomats, orders four to vacate homes

Diplomats at the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi are reportedly facing harassment in the host country, with basic utilities and services to their residences being disrupted.

According to media reports published on Tuesday, four Pakistani diplomats living in rented private residences in India have been issued notices to vacate their homes.

The extension of Indian visas for 17 staff members, including diplomats, is also pending in the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. Three to five months ago, a request was made to New Delhi for the extension of visas for Pakistani officials.

Pakistani diplomats are under constant watch, and their home gas and internet services are being cut off from time to time, according to reports.

The water supply to the Commission in New Delhi has reportedly been cut off, while the delivery of Indian newspapers to the commission has also been barred for a month and a half. Meanwhile, the PHC has informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs authorities.

Relations between both countries deteriorated following the April 22 attack in Pahalgam in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), which killed 26 people, leading to a military confrontation between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

In May this year, the Indian government declared two Pakistani officials posted at PHC in New Delhi persona non grata, accusing them of “activities not in keeping with their official status.”

In response, Pakistan had declared a staff member of the Indian High Commission (IHC) in Islamabad persona non grata, directing the diplomat to leave the country within 24 hours.

  • Pakistan’s warming ties with US unsettle India, says Financial Times

Pakistan’s warming ties with US unsettle India, says Financial Times

Recent diplomatic engagement by Pakistan with the United States (US) President Donald Trump’s administration has signalled an unexpected thaw in Washington-Islamabad ties, eliciting a strong reaction from India, the Financial Times (FT) reported on Monday.

Describing the improved relations between Islamabad and Washington DC as an “unexpected resurgence”, the newspaper said that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal General Asim Munir has twice been received in high-level settings in the US this summer, most recently in Florida, where he attended the retirement ceremony of Gen Michael Kurilla, head of US Central Command.

According to the FT, a month after the Pakistan and India clashes, Asim Munir met with US President Trump in June for a two-hour private lunch; the meeting was particularly notable as Trump had previously been openly critical of Pakistan.

“What’s happening in US-Pakistan relations is a surprise. I would describe the relationship now as one that’s enjoying an unexpected resurgence, even a renaissance. Pakistan has very successfully understood how to engage with such an unconventional president,” the newspaper quoted Michael Kugelman, a non-resident senior fellow at the Asia Pacific Foundation, as saying.

Attributing the change in tone to a diplomatic strategy by senior Pakistani officials, combining counterterrorism cooperation, outreach to individuals in Trump’s business network, and agreements involving energy, mineral resources, and cryptocurrency, the FT said that the moves were accompanied by positive messaging towards the White House.

Citing the transfer of an Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K) suspect, Sharifullah, to the US from Pakistan, the report declared the move a key development between both countries. The suspect is alleged to have masterminded the Abbey Gate attack at Kabul airport in August 2021, killing at least 170 Afghans alongside 13 US service members.

When the suspect was being transferred to the US, Trump praised Pakistan for the arrest in his State of the Union address.

The newspaper also detailed an April agreement between World Liberty Financial, a Trump-backed cryptocurrency initiative, and Pakistan’s crypto council. One of the venture’s co-founders remarked during a visit to Pakistan on the scale of the country’s mineral resources.

The FT noted that India responded with “deep irritation” to the improving relations, especially since US tariffs on Indian goods were raised to 50 percent, while Pakistan faced a lower rate of 19 percent.

Trump’s reiteration that he brokered a ceasefire agreement between Pakistan and India in May was lauded by Islamabad; conversely, New Delhi emphasized that the agreement had been reached through direct channels between the Director General Military Operations (DGMO) of both countries.

  • US designates BLA, Majeed Brigade as foreign terrorist organisation

US designates BLA, Majeed Brigade as foreign terrorist organisation

The United States (US) has formally designated the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its militant faction Majeed Brigade as Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO), the US State Department said in a statement on Monday, chalking up a huge diplomatic victory for Pakistan.

The move also adds the Majeed Brigade as an alias to the BLA’s previous listing as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) group.

The BLA has claimed responsibility for multiple attacks, including the October 6 suicide attack on a road near Jinnah International Airport, killing three people, including two Chinese engineers, and injuring at least 11 others.

In March this year, the BLA claimed responsibility for the hijacking of the Jaffar Express train en route from Quetta to Peshawar, which left 31 civilians and security personnel martyred and saw more than 300 passengers taken hostage.

“Today’s action taken by the Department of State demonstrates the Trump Administration’s commitment to countering terrorism.  Terrorist designations play a critical role in our fight against this scourge and are an effective way to curtail support for terrorist activities,” read the press statement.

It further said that the actions were taken under section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, as amended, and Executive Order 13224, as amended. “FTO designations go into effect upon publication in the Federal Register,” the statement concluded.

Islamabad has already termed BLA and Majeed Brigade ‘Fitna al-Hindustan’, saying that the insurgent groups are conducting their anti-state activities with India’s backing.

Balochistan Chief Minister (CM) Mir Sarfraz Bugti welcomed the move, attributing the credit to the federal government and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir, who recently traveled to the US and engaged in high-level discussions with military leaders, for communicating Pakistan’s stance against terrorism to the Trump administration.

“BLA and Majeed Brigade shed the blood of the innocent in the name of rights and ethnicity,” he said, stressing that the world must unite to eliminate the scourge of terrorism.
