Youm-e-Takbeer: PM, president reaffirm resolve to protect sovereignty, integrity

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as the nation marks the 27th anniversary of its nuclear tests.

In response to India’s nuclear test, conducted in May 1998 in Rajasthan, Pakistan carried out underground nuclear tests on May 28 1998, in the Chagai District of Balochistan, marking the country’s first public demonstration of its nuclear weapons capability.

Pakistan became the seventh nation in the world, and the first Muslim-majority country, to possess nuclear arms.

On May 10, 1998, two days after the initial test, Pakistan conducted another nuclear test, known as Chagai-II.

On the occasion of Youm-e-Takbeer, President Zardari stated that amid the evolving regional security situation, Pakistan’s nuclear capability continues to serve as a credible minimum deterrent, one that guarantees peace and ensures that no one can compromise the country’s sovereignty and national security.

“On this momentous occasion of Youm-e-Takbeer, I extend my heartfelt felicitations to the entire nation. Today, we observe the 27th anniversary of Youm-e-Takbeer, a day when we demonstrated our nuclear capabilities and established strategic deterrence,” he said.

“This day serves as a reminder of our commitment to safeguarding the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of our beloved country,” he added.

The president underscored that the nation, on this day, pays rich tribute to the scientists, engineers, and the civil and military leadership whose dedication and commitment made this achievement possible.

“We also pay tribute to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who laid the foundation of Pakistan’s nuclear programme, which made the country’s defence impregnable. We also acknowledge the role of Benazir Bhutto, whose stewardship further advanced and strengthened our nuclear programme,” he said.

Referring to the recent Indian aggression, the president stated that Pakistan had shown strategic patience and reaffirmed its firm commitment to peace.

“Our calibrated response, under Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, was measured and effective, which forced the enemy to cease its hostile actions,” President Zardari added.

PM Shehbaz also hailed Pakistan’s nuclear journey and urged the nation to come together with renewed resolve to turn the country into an economic power.

In his message to commemorate May 28, the prime minister thanked Allah Almighty and congratulated the people of Pakistan. He said: “Today on Youm-e-Takbeer, I thank Allah Almighty and congratulate from the core of my heart the entire nation and all patriotic Pakistanis.”

PM Shehbaz linked this year’s commemoration with what he described as Pakistan’s recent success in defending itself from “an unjustified war imposed by India”. He hailed the nation’s spirit during the May 6–10 confrontation, stating: “The joys of Youm-e-Takbeer have further increased for a nation filled with victory.”

Reflecting on the historic nuclear tests of May 28, 1998, conducted under the leadership of then-prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif, the prime minister stated that the decision to respond with six nuclear tests, compared to India’s five, demonstrated an “iron resolve” in the face of global pressure and sanctions.

“I salute the nation, which made immense sacrifices for the completion of the nuclear programme and wrote a proud story of its determination and faith,” he added.

The Armed Forces of Pakistan, along with the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and Services Chiefs (CJCSC), also extended heartfelt felicitations to the people of Pakistan.

“Youm-e-Takbeer commemorates the momentous occasion in 1998 when Pakistan emerged as a nuclear power—restoring the strategic balance in South Asia and asserting its sovereign right to self-defence. This historic achievement epitomizes the nation’s resolve, unity, and unwavering pursuit of a dignified and peaceful existence,” Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) has said in a statement.

The military’s media wing stated that Pakistan’s strategic capability is a national trust, reflecting the collective aspirations of its people. The commemoration of Youm-e-Takbeer is a tribute to the foresight of visionary leadership, the brilliance of our scientists and engineers, and the countless contributions of all those who have made Pakistan’s defence unassailable.

The Armed Forces of Pakistan reiterate their unwavering resolve to defend the motherland against all threats across the full spectrum of conflict. “As responsible custodians of the nation’s strategic assets, we reaffirm that our nuclear capability remains solely for defensive purposes and stands as a guarantor of peace”, said the ISPR.

“Let this day renew our collective pledge to remain vigilant, united, and resolute in our commitment to the security, progress, and prosperity of our beloved homeland.

“The armed forces stand in solidarity with the nation, honouring the sacrifices that made this milestone possible and continuing the journey toward strength, stability, and self-reliance,” the military’s media wing maintained.

  • Youm-e-Takbeer: Public holiday declared on May 28

Youm-e-Takbeer: Public holiday declared on May 28

The federal government has announced a public holiday to observe Youm-e-Takbeer on Wednesday, May 28.

The day commemorates the success of the Chagai-I and Chagai-II series of nuclear tests, which made Pakistan the seventh country in the world to possess nuclear weapons.

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) will also observe Youm-e-Takbeer as a holiday.

While schools are officially closed for summer vacations, a notification issued by the School Education Department states that Youm-e-Takbeer will still be celebrated in schools, with special programmes to be organised during morning assemblies.

Schools in Punjab have been instructed to hold debate competitions, national song contests, and art activities, as well as pay tribute to the Pakistan Army, accompanied by the national anthem and prayers.

Top winners at the district level will be awarded a prize of Rs. 50,000. Summer vacations will also be formally announced at the conclusion of the ceremonies in schools.

Similarly, the Sindh government has also announced a holiday, with all provincial offices, including local councils and other government departments, to remain closed.

Khamenei wants Pak-Iran alliance for ending Israeli crimes in Gaza

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday to emphasise the Pakistan-Iran alliance for an end to Israeli crimes in Gaza.

Following the meeting with Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif, a series of tweets was made from Iran’s supreme leader’s official X handle.

In one of his tweets, he wrote, “Effective, joint efforts by Iran and Pakistan are necessary to stop the Zionist regime’s crimes in Gaza.”

In another tweet, calling Pakistan’s stance regarding the issue of Palestine “commendable”, Khamenei wrote, “While there have always been inducements for Islamic countries to establish ties with the Zionist regime, Pakistan has never been influenced by those inducements.”

One of his tweets reads, “At a time when the warmongers in the world have numerous motives for creating conflicts and wars, the only way to ensure the security of the Islamic Ummah is the unity of Muslim nations.”

He underscored that the Palestinian issue is the most important issue in the “Islamic world”.

The supreme leader further said that the conditions in Gaza “have deteriorated to such an extent that people in Europe and the US are holding protests against their governments. But in these same circumstances, some Muslim governments are standing with the Zionist regime.”

Khamenei asserted that Tehran and Islamabad can assist one another in many fields. “We are hopeful there will be a comprehensive expansion of ties, particularly in economic, political, and cultural spheres,” he added.

During a joint press conference in Tehran, accompanied by the Iranian President on Monday, PM Shehbaz highlighted the long-standing cultural and historical ties between Pakistan and Iran.

On the ongoing Gaza conflict, PM Shehbaz expressed Pakistan’s solidarity with the Palestinian people, decrying the Israeli aggression that has resulted in the deaths of nearly 54,000 Palestinians.

Shehbaz is currently on a four-nation tour to friendly countries, where he will express his gratitude for their support for Pakistan during the recent military escalation with India.

On Monday, the Pakistani Prime Minister was received by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at Saadabad Palace in the Iranian capital, where he received a guard of honour.

  • Here’s how Pakistani intelligence obtained footage of IAF’s downed Rafale

Here’s how Pakistani intelligence obtained footage of IAF’s downed Rafale

Journalist Asif Bashir Chaudhary has revealed details about how Pakistan’s premier intelligence agency obtained footage of a downed Indian Air Force (IAF) Rafale fighter jet.

During the night of May 6–7, Pakistan reportedly shot down five Indian fighter jets, including three Rafales, one Su-30, and one MiG-29 Fulcrum, after India launched missiles into Pakistan.

“The Indian security forces immediately cordoned off the area where the Rafale crashed after being shot down, preventing civilians from approaching,” the journalist claimed while speaking on the YouTube channel Talk SHOCK.

According to Chaudhary, after Pakistan’s field intelligence agency operating in India informed the central agency that an Indian spy was in possession of the downed Rafale footage, a plan was devised to obtain it.

As per Chaudhary’s account, a Pakistani officer pretended to be a reporter and reached out to the Indian intelligence officer, saying, “I am a correspondent for an international media outlet, and I want to acquire footage of the downed Rafale for my organisation,” adding that the trick worked.

The Indian officer allegedly agreed to share the footage but demanded INR 50,000 in return.

“Once the amount was transferred, the footage was received on the provided WhatsApp number,” Chaudhary disclosed.

He added that the video was so convincing that it compelled many to accept that a Rafale had indeed been shot down.

When investigative journalist Azaz Syed asked whether the footage came from a Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) or Intelligence Bureau (IB) official, Chaudhary said he had not been informed of that detail.

“However, the Indian intelligence officer did possess the footage,” he clarified.

When asked which Pakistani intelligence agency had obtained the footage – Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Military Intelligence (MI), or the Intelligence Bureau (IB) – Chaudhary declined to name the agency. He asserted that he was not authorised to disclose that information. However, he hinted that it was the “premier intelligence agency.”

It merits mention that New Delhi has neither confirmed nor denied reports that multiple IAF jets were downed by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) during the aerial combat. However, a number of international media outlets have confirmed reports of Indian aircraft being shot down, including Rafales.

India’s reputable English-language newspaper The Hindu had previously posted on X (formerly Twitter) that three Indian fighter jets were shot down by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). The post, however, was removed, with the outlet stating it had not received official confirmation from the Indian government.

Additionally, a senior French intelligence official reportedly confirmed to CNN that a Rafale fighter jet belonging to the IAF was shot down by Pakistan, marking what may be the first known combat loss of the French-made aircraft.

“We are aware of the loss of one Rafale and are examining reports suggesting more could have been downed,” CNN quoted a French official as saying.

Meanwhile, BBC Verify reported on May 15 that it authenticated three videos, purportedly showing the wreckage of a French-manufactured Rafale fighter, which is used by the IAF.

“In one clip, geolocated by BBC Verify to a field near the city of Bathinda in India’s Punjab state, troops can be seen collecting debris from the crashed jet,” it said.

The outlet further reported that it also had two clips from the same location filmed at night. “One shows debris in the field, while another shows a projectile catching fire in the sky and then fire in an open field,” it revealed.

  • ‘It’s all a lot of sh*t’: Scottish YouTuber rubbishes Indian media claims about spying in Pakistan

‘It’s all a lot of sh*t’: Scottish YouTuber rubbishes Indian media claims about spying in Pakistan

A Scottish travel vlogger has dismissed Indian media reports that claimed he played a role in exposing an alleged spy from India operating in Pakistan.

Callum Mill, who runs the YouTube channel Callum Abroad, took to social media to clarify that Indian news outlets were twisting footage that he shot in Lahore to fit a baseless narrative.

The controversy surrounds Jyoti Malhotra, an Indian YouTuber arrested by the BJP government on accusations of “spying for Pakistan.” Malhotra visited Pakistan in 2023 with a valid visa and was seen in a YouTube vlog walking through Lahore’s old Anarkali Bazaar with an armed man following behind her. Callum happened to be in the same market during her visit and briefly interacted with her on camera.

In the video, Callum asks about her thoughts on Pakistan, to which she responds positively, praising the hospitality and saying she’s enjoying herself. At the time, Callum expressed mild surprise at the high-level security surrounding Malhotra, saying, “I don’t know why she needs so many guns… very strange.”

Months later, amid ongoing Pak-India tensions, Indian media began circulating Callum’s footage, calling it a “breakthrough”. Multiple outlets alleged that the Scottish YouTuber had helped expose a spy network involving Pakistani contacts, despite the fact that the footage was publicly available on Malhotra’s own YouTube channel and contained no incriminating evidence.

Callum, clearly frustrated, took to X (previously Twitter) to reject the claims outright. Sharing clips of the same footage being aired on the Indian news channel Times Now, he wrote, “They are using my footage like I’ve unearthed crucial evidence, but it’s all a lot of shit. The gunmen can clearly be seen in her own video, so I’m honestly baffled by why they are bringing me into it.”

He further added, “Surely Indian police were scrolling her footage to see where she’s been and who she’s been meeting… they would have seen it.”

Callum’s strong rebuttal has highlighted the credibility gap in Indian media’s reporting, especially when it comes to anything involving Pakistan. Despite the Indian YouTuber having travelled to Pakistan legally and all footage being publicly available, Indian authorities arrested her and several others on vague charges, with no concrete evidence shared with the public yet.

  • ‘Reckless provocation’: Pakistan hits back at Modi for terror allegations

‘Reckless provocation’: Pakistan hits back at Modi for terror allegations

Pakistan has hit back at Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, terming his remarks from a recent political rally “reckless provocations.”

“To end terrorism in Pakistan, the people of Pakistan need to step forward. Live peacefully and eat your bread, or else my bullet is ready,” the Indian premier Monday said at a rally in his home state of Gujarat’s Bhuj.

He said that those who “fanned terror had not even imagined in their dreams how difficult it was to face Modi”.

“Ever since Pakistan was born, it has focused on enmity with India, while we in India have focused on removing poverty, growth and development,” he said while addressing a public rally in Dahod later in the day.

Strongly reacting to Modi’s reckless statements, Islamabad described the remarks as hate-driven. In a statement, the Foreign Office (FO) said the remarks were a “theatrical flourish of a campaign rally rather than the sobriety expected from the leader of a nuclear-armed state”.

“The hate-driven invocation of violence in his remarks is deeply disturbing, not only for its content but for the dangerous precedent it sets in a region already burdened by volatility,” the statement added.

Stressing that the Indian leader’s remarks were deeply disturbing, the FO said, “This kind of inflammatory rhetoric goes against the core principles of the United Nations Charter.”

Additionally, the FO underscored that all member states were obliged to resolve disputes peacefully and refrain from the threat or use of force against the sovereignty and political independence of other nations

    .

It merits a mention that the Indian premier’s rhetoric comes following Pakistan’s swift and befitting response to New Delhi’s cross-border aggression. In retaliation to unprovoked missile strikes, Pakistan, earlier this month, destroyed multiple Indian airbases.

Separately, PM Shehbaz Sharif on Monday said that for the sake of regional peace, Pakistan was prepared to hold talks with India, reiterating that the country desired peace and stability in South Asia.

“We want peace… we are ready to engage in dialogue for the resolution of all disputes, including the issue of Kashmir,” the Pakistani premier said while addressing a joint press conference along with Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran.

During the presser, PM Shehbaz also emphasised that Pakistan was a peaceful country that sought harmony in the region, however, any act of aggression would always be met with a strong and effective response.

Homeless man infested with maggots rescued near Mayo Hospital

A man infested with maggots who had been helplessly lying half naked near Mayo hospital in Lahore for the last 15 days has been rescued by The Crazy Cats, the largest cat sanctuary in Pakistan.

In a video posted yesterday  on its Instagram page, The Crazy Cats wrote that the man said that he hails from Garhi Shahu in Lahore.

The video shows the man in vulnerable condition with his left foot appearing wounded and infested with maggots. He was lying on the road, with flies buzzing around him.

“After being contacted, the Deputy Medical Superintendent (DMS) and Emergency Department sent his staff and shifted the infected man into a ward where multiple tests were performed, including X-rays and an electrocardiogram (ECG),” wrote The Crazy Cats in the caption.

Following the removal of maggots from the man’s foot, he has been discharged from the hospital.

The Crazy Cats further said that the police have also been informed about the case.

The Crazy Cats have told The Current that the man “seems” like an addict, adding that he is under their supervision.

On being asked about his family background, The Crazy Cats responded that the man is “not mentally stable to answer much.”

According to The Crazy Cats’ website, it is a project that has been rescuing cats for the last six years. It is located in SA Gardens, Lahore.

Security forces kill nine Indian-sponsored terrorists in three separate KP operations

Security forces have killed nine Indian sponsored Khwarij in three separate engagements in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Province in the last two days, Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement issued on Sunday.

“An intelligence-based operation was conducted by the Security Forces in Dera Ismail Khan District, on the reported presence of Indian sponsored Khwarij. During the operation, Pakistani troops effectively engaged the Khwarij location, and after an intense fire exchange, four Indian sponsored khwarij were sent to hell,” said the military’s media wing.

The ISPR further detailed that another intelligence-based operation was conducted in the Tank District, and in the ensuing fire exchange, security forces sent another two Indian sponsored Khwarij to hell.

In the third encounter that took place in the general area of Bagh, Khyber District, troops successfully neutralised three more Khwarij.

Weapons and ammunition were also recovered from the terrorists, who had been actively involved in terrorist activities in these areas.

Sanitization operations are being conducted to eliminate remaining terrorists in the area, as the security forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe out the menace of Indian Sponsored Terrorism from the country, said the ISPR.

Pakistan has witnessed a sharp spike in terror incidents since the fall of Kabul in August 2021, particularly in the border provinces of KP and Balochistan.

However, the first quarter of 2025 saw promising trends in the security landscape of Pakistan, with the fatalities of militants and insurgents outnumbering the cumulative losses of civilians and security forces personnel.

Separately, the death toll in the Khuzdar bus blast near Zero Point rose to eight after two more female students succumbed to their injuries in a hospital on Sunday.

Media reports quoted security sources as claiming that two students, Shema Ibrahim and Muskan, died at the hospital after fighting for their life for four days.

Media reports stated that the explosion has claimed the lives of eight students, including seven females and one male student.

On May 21, at least five people, including three female students, were killed on the spot and 43 others wounded in the attack on a school bus near Zero Point in Khuzdar on the Quetta-Karachi highway when it was on students at the Army Public School (APS) in Khuzdar Cantonment.

Case filed against protestors for stopping Aseefa Bhutto Zardari’s convoy

A case has been filed against protestors who stopped the convoy of the First Lady and President Asif Ali Zardari’s youngest daughter near the Jamshoro toll plaza on Thursday.

According to details, the First Information Report (FIR) was registered on May 23 against the protestors for rioting, blocking roads, and interfering in government affairs.

As per Jamshoro Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Zafar Siddiqui, Aseefa was heading to Nawabshah in a convoy when they were stopped near the Jamshoro toll plaza.

The SSP said that protestors also struck vehicles in the convoy with batons, adding that police personnel safely cleared Aseefa’s vehicle within a minute.

A group of people was staging a demonstration against the controversial canal project, which had been postponed indefinitely by the federal government last month, said the police officer.

Following the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) raising objections to the canal project, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed last month that no new canals would be constructed unless a consensus is reached in the Council of Common Interests (CCI).

On April 28, the CCI rejected the federal government’s proposal for the construction of new canals, overturning the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council’s (ECNEC) decision made on February 7.

  • ‘Stingy’ Imran Khan doesn’t even buy his own clothes, claims Khawaja Asif

‘Stingy’ Imran Khan doesn’t even buy his own clothes, claims Khawaja Asif

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, in an exclusive interview with The Current, levelled multiple allegations and unleashed personal jabs on Friday against jailed former prime minister Imran Khan.

Stressing that Imran Khan was very “stingy”, the defence minister alleged that the former star cricketer didn’t spend a penny on himself.

“I am saying it on record that he didn’t even buy clothes with his own money in his entire life,” Asif said, then recalled a famous saying, “You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.”

He then mocked the former premier, saying that Imran Khan had six to seven personalities. “Sometimes, he becomes religious; sometimes he starts having illegitimate children; sometimes he has affairs with women; sometimes he becomes a cricketer; and sometimes he starts practising Piri Faqiri (spirituality).”

He said that Imran Khan has no specific personality, as he is totally confused. “However, he [Imran Khan] is sure about one thing: that the end result must favour him,” he added.

Asif further said that when he alleged that Imran Khan had syphoned off seven million dollars, the latter filed a case against him.

Asif further said that the former premier stashed the money abroad by siphoning it off, claiming, “He [Imran Khan] did not bring the donation into the country. He cross-examined me in the court.”

The defence minister was alluding to the defamation suit worth Rs10 billion that Imran Khan had filed against Asif in 2012, for levelling allegations of non-transparency, money laundering and use of anonymous companies in Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust (SKMT) funds.

In his lawsuit, Imran Khan referred to the August 1, 2012 presser during which the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) top brass had accused Imran of lost in “real estate gambling” a huge amount of funds donated to the SKMT in the form of Zakat, Fitrana or other kinds of donations.

The PML-N stalwart’s harsh criticism of the PTI head came in reply to a question about who he would vote for, Imran Khan or PPP’s Asif Ali Zardari. The defence minister took no time to answer that he would vote for Zardari, stating that he’s at least “not a hypocrite.”
