Punjab govt withdraws Sharif family’s security

The Punjab police have withdrawn the security of the Sharif family except for Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif after the directives issued by the province’s Home Minister Colonel (retd) Muhammad Hashim.

Muhammad Hashim said that PM Shehbaz will continue to get police security at the houses declared by him.

“More than 500 policemen were deployed for the security of the Sharif family,” the police said, adding that security has also been withdrawn from Attaullah Tarar and other Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders.

Previously, security was deployed outside the Jati Umrah and Model Town residences of the Sharif family.

Earlier, the Punjab Police raided Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) Attaullah Tarar’s old residence in Lahore. However, he was not present at his home and no one was arrested.

Miftah Ismail commended for his ‘bold and clear’ comments on violence against religious minorities

Speaking on Geo News’ programme “Naya Pakistan”, Finance Minister (FM) Miftah Ismail on Sunday said that most Pakistanis are driven by emotions and not rationality.

“How many people spoke up for a Christian couple burnt alive in an industrial kiln? A few days ago, an Ahmadi was killed but not many people raised their voices. People are scared.”

A 62-year-old member of the Ahmadi community named Naseer Ahmad was stabbed to death in Chenab Nagar on August 12, for allegedly refusing to chant slogans in praise of Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) founder Khadim Hussain Rizvi.

Miftah went on to say that we don’t value education and that we are an emotionally driven country. “We are an emotional country that does not give much precedence to rationality and thinking.”

“We don’t own Nobel laureate, Dr Abdus Salam, because he was an Ahmadi. Our daughter, Malala [Yousafzai] won a Nobel Prize and we find all kinds of faults in the world and associate them with her,” said Miftah.

The minister also said that our country lacks the basic awareness required for a country to progress because we don’t give preference to education.

Twitterati reacted to Miftah’s comments about minority rights.

According to a Financial Times report, the IMF and Saudi Arabia have also discussed the possibility of Islamabad being able to borrow up to $2.8 billion against Riyadh’s quota of Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) at the Fund after Saudi Arabia’s decision to renew $3 billion deposit at the State Bank of Pakistan.

On the occasion of the 75th Independence Day of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman congratulated the Pakistani nation.

  • ‘We are no less than anyone in the world’: PM Shehbaz on Independence Day

Pakistanis all across the world are celebrating the diamond jubilee of Pakistan’s independence. The day dawned with 31 gun salute in the federal capital and 21 gun salute in the provincial headquarters.

National flags, buntings, portraits of founding fathers, posters, and banners are also seen everywhere as part of the celebration of Independence Day.

On occasion, Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif, President Arif Alvi and other politicians wished the entire nation.

Addressing a national flag-hoisting and unveiling of re-recording ceremony at Jinnah Convention Centre, PM Shehbaz said that like their forefathers, on this 75th Independence Day, they vowed to transform Pakistan into an economic power.

“If we can become a nuclear power, we can also become an economic power but for it we have to strive day and night and prove to the world that we are no less than anyone in the world,” he added.

On Twitter, PM Shehbaz stressed the importance of economic sovereignty. He said, “Time has come for the nation to understand what true freedom means. It is a freedom from want, hunger and poverty. Without economic sovereignty, our freedom is incomplete. Our greatest strength is our people. It is about time we place their welfare at the center of public policy.”

“While we celebrate our hard-earned independence, Pakistan at 75 calls for deep reflection. We have yet to fully realize the dream that our founding fathers dreamed,” he added.

The premier went to meet the orphans of the Pakistan Sweet Home in Islamabad. A video shared by PM Office on Twitter showed PM Shehbaz and children cutting the cake.

President Alvi advises politicians not to discuss the army

President Arif Alvi on Friday, August 12, stressed against making the Pakistan Army “controversial”. He made these remarks in connection to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Dr Shahbaz Gill’s comments about the establishment.

“Time and again, I have been telling politicians not to bring the armed forces under discussion,” said the president, adding that it was the armed forces’ job to win the battle against terrorism; they should be respected.

It is pertinent to mention here that Gill was arrested on August 9 for inciting the public against state institutions.

The president, addressing all stakeholders of the country, said that the situation “was not ideal” and that it was crucial for politicians to sit at the talking table.

“Politicians are not sitting together at the talking table; they have to unite. If I don’t see the situation getting better, I will ask them to sit at the table. As the president, I can only ask, not order,” Alvi noted.

A judicial magistrate in Islamabad on Friday granted bail to Gill’s driver Izhar’s wife, Mehreen, who had been arrested under charges of rioting, assaulting a police party and theft during a raid on the house she was staying in.

Speaking on Geo News’ programme ‘Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath’ on Thursday, PML-N’s Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said the police was wrong to a arrest a woman. “Rana Sanaullah should take notice of the incident and dispose of the issue by arranging a bail for the woman.”

PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz said that she has spoken to Rana Sanaullah that the woman should be released.

She tweeted: “She should also be released. I have spoken to Rana Sahab. No one should be abused — not even our abusers.”

The Islamabad Police on Thursday raided the residence of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Dr Shahbaz Gill’s driver, Izhar, to recover Gill’s mobile phone. A sedition case was filed against Gill.

A first information report (FIR) has been filed against Izhar. He was with Gill at the time of his arrest and claimed he had been subjected to violence during Gill’s arrest. The FIR said Gill told the police that Izhar still had his mobile.

    What’s in the FIR?

“The man identified himself as Izharullah while the woman identified herself as his wife, Mehreen,” reports Dawn.

The FIR said both Izhar and his wife created a lot of fuss after seeing the police party and called five to six more people from inside the house.

“All of them attacked the police party, put up resistance, began creating a hue and cry, and threatened the police party. As a result, more people gathered at the scene,” says the FIR.

According to the FIR, while the suspects were putting up resistance, some of the suspects tore the shirt of a constable, Sajjad Shahid. They also tore buttons off his shirt and snatched his mobile phone and wallet, which contained his ATM card, service card, and Rs15,000 cash.

    Audio of Gill’s driver:

In an audio clip posted on PTI’s official Twitter account, a man who identified himself as Gill’s assistant said: “The police have raided my house, harassed my wife and family members, and taken away our mobile phones.”

“They are repeatedly asking me to bring Shahbaz Gill’s belongings. I don’t have anything,” he said.

‘Fear and panic’: TTP sets up ‘check-post’ in Swat

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has established a check-post on the Balasoor Top, reports The News.

According to the news outlet, the militants have established a check-post on the Balasoor Top in Matta tehsil, the hometown of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan, while also roaming in other areas of the district.

Hamza Shehbaz files petition to review SC’s verdict declaring Elahi as CM

Former Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Hamza Shehbaz has filed a review petition in the Supreme Court (SC) against the apex court’s July 26 verdict, which declared Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi as the Punjab CM.

Hamza filed the petition through his lawyer Mansoor Awan in which it has been requested that the SC should review the decision of declaring Pervaiz Elahi as the CM of Punjab and the ruling of former Punjab Assembly (PA) Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari should be declared constitutional.

The review petition stated that the court in its order had “failed” to appreciate that when a justice signs a judgement, then to the extent that judgement is not expressly controverted in the separate opinion, that justice remains bound by the judgement he has put a signature to, whereas the order makes the inverse and counter-intuitive inference because other aspects were covered in the separately rendered decision.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader further demanded that a full court be constituted to decide the matters involving the interpretation and application of Article 63-A of the Constitution in this regard.

Earlier, a three-member bench of the SC declared Mazari’s ruling in the Punjab Chief Minister election “illegal” and ruled that Pervaiz Elahi will be the new CM of the province.
