Smuggled goods worth millions seized after cargo scanners installed at Torkham border

Dedicated cargo scanner machines have been installed at Torkham Border Terminals by the National Logistics Cell (NLC) to scan the import and export cargo vehicles between the crossing point of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

All vehicles of Afghan Transit Trade (ATT) will go through scanning. The practice of scanning is being carried out by the NLC round the clock to facilitate Customs in the timely clearance of import and export vehicles.

The scanning at Torkham has resulted in the seizure of foreign currency worth millions of rupees and a huge quantity of arms and ammunition, gold, narcotics, and smuggled electronic gadgets that were handed to the officials of concerned government departments at the spot.

To control the movement of contraband and illegal items, cargo scanning is considered as the most effective tool.

Did a sniper really take shots at Maryam Nawaz in Lahore? IG answers

Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Shoaib Dastgir has dismissed reports of bullets being fired at the vehicle of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Maryam Nawaz last week when she was to appear before the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Lahore.

Many police officials were injured when a scuffle broke out last week between policemen and PML-N workers ahead of Maryam’s appearance. Footage of the incident suggested that workers had brought bags full of stones which were pelted at police and security officials.

Former senator Sajid Mir, after meeting Maryam on Sunday, claimed she had been targeted by some sniper during her appearance, saying the windscreen of her bullet-proof vehicle could not be smashed by a stone.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Dastgir said no evidence was offered to back up claims asserted through reports and social media.

He also said the institution of police is an independent one and has no tussle with any political party. However, he warned, those who took the law into their hands will be punished.

  • Qureshi leaves for ‘very important’ China visit to represent Pakistan’s civil, military stance

Qureshi leaves for ‘very important’ China visit to represent Pakistan’s civil, military stance

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has left for a two-day visit to China to attend the second round of the China-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue, a statement from the Foreign Office said on Thursday.

In a video message released before his departure, the foreign minister said he was going on a “very important trip to China” and that he had a discussion with Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan before leaving.

“I am leaving on a very important visit to China. I had a discussion with the prime minister regarding this visit yesterday. My delegation will represent the stance of the political and military leadership of the country. I am hopeful that my meeting with Foreign Minister Wang Yi will prove to be beneficial for both countries,” Qureshi said.

    WATCH VIDEO:

Qureshi, who is accompanied by senior officials, will visit China’s Hainan province where he will lead the Pakistani delegation in the dialogue, the FO statement added. He is scheduled to return tomorrow (Aug 21).

State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi will lead the Chinese side during the dialogue, according to the statement.

“During the dialogue, both sides will discuss cooperation on COVID-19, bilateral relations and regional and international issues of mutual interest,” the FO said.

“The visit will play an important role in further strengthening Pakistan-China ‘All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership’ and deepen strategic communication and coordination with China on a range of issues.”

The first round of the China-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue took place in March 2019 in which both sides vowed to protect the $60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) from “all kinds of threats”.

Reports emerging on Wednesday suggested the foreign minister will “hold meetings with his Chinese counterpart and senior leadership while important decisions will be taken regarding the visit of the Chinese president to Pakistan.”

He was also expected to call upon Chinese President Xi Jinping during the trip.

The trip comes after PM Imran, earlier this week, said it should be clear that Islamabad’s future is tied to Beijing which has stood by Pakistan through thick and thin.

Speaking to senior journalist Kamran Khan during a wide-ranging interview, he said that both countries recognised each other’s importance and were further strengthening mutual ties. “Unfortunately, western countries are using India against China,” he added.

The premier also said that Chinese President Xi Jinping was scheduled to visit Pakistan in May this year but his visit was delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak. “His visit is now expected towards the end of the year.”

  • Major security hazard as Taliban splinter groups rejoin outfit to ‘cleanse Pakistan’

Major security hazard as Taliban splinter groups rejoin outfit to ‘cleanse Pakistan’

In a major security hazard, two splinter groups of the defunct Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have rejoined the terrorist outfit, with their leaders and Shura members swearing allegiance to TTP chief Mufti Noor Wali Mehsud in Afghanistan.

Multiple sources have confirmed the rejoining of TTP’s splinter groups – Jamat-ul-Ahrar (JuA) and Hizb-ul-Ahrar (HuA) – both groups known for carrying out deadly terrorist attacks against the Pakistani military, state apparatus, and individuals. A source claimed that Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, another defunct terrorist group, has also rejoined the TTP but the report is yet to be confirmed.

It was none other than the former TTP spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan, who recently managed to escape from a military safe house, that made the claim on Twitter, a social media platform.
Later, TTP’s Umar Media officially announced the merger, claiming that JuA chief Umar Khalid Khurasani and HuA’s Ameer Umar Khurasani had met with TTP chief and swore allegiance.

“We also send a message to our enemy that our sacred jihad would continue till Pakistan is cleansed of evil system and oppressed are free from the shackles of the oppressor,” the message read.

Social media is now rife with videos and photographs of the allegiance ceremony held somewhere in Afghanistan. Experts, however, are of the opinion that such known terrorists cannot gather openly for a ceremony without the support and facilitation of the Afghan intelligence.

Later, several reliable sources and social media accounts also shared details of the merger.

Sources have revealed that the sole objective of the merger is to launch terrorist activity against Pakistan while simultaneously sabotaging efforts to restore peace and stability in its war-ravaged neighbor, Afghanistan.

However, the merger appears to have been in the making for several months. According to sources, representatives from TTP, JuA, and HuA have met several times in different locations inside Afghanistan to discuss their reunification.

The effort even ended up in deadlock at one point recently, sources revealed. On August 13, talks had all but stalled, they said. Talks resumed three days later, but only after direct intervention by operatives from Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security (NDS) and India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), the sources added.

The talks culminated in an oath of allegiance to bring the three militant factions together, which was held in Afghanistan’s Paktia and Kunar provinces, the sources said. The agreement, reportedly, designates Mufti Noor Wali as the “Amir” of TTP, making him responsible for all planned terrorist activities inside Pakistan.

Meanwhile, JuA’s Ikram Turabi, who was bailed out from Peshawar Central Jail earlier this year, also arrived in Afghanistan and has been appointed as the head of the Amari Shura.

Under the terms of the merger, all terrorist attacks would be sanctioned and approved by TTP’s Markazi and Rahbari Shuras. More alarmingly, their prime target will be Pakistan’s military, paramilitary, and law enforcement.

But physical attacks seem to be only one aspect of the newly merged terrorist outfit, the sources said. According to them, an intercepted voice message sent by TTP leader Maulvi Rafiuddin to TTP commander Abu Hamza revealed that the group plans to create a false impression that the merger took place in Pakistan to malign the country’s reputation and discredit its anti-terror gains.

Not only is Rafiuddin based in Afghanistan’s Logar province, but he has also been known for coordinating meetings between TTP leaders and Afghan law enforcement agencies, the sources further said.

There are still a few sticking points between the three militant groups despite the merger. According to sources, there is a stalemate between the terrorist factions over income from certain nephrite and marble mines in Mohmand. The JuA also wants TTP’s assistance in securing the release of JuA commander Ezatullah, who is currently in Afghan Taliban custody.

Islamabad has long accused Kabul of turning a blind eye toward TTP and other terrorists that fled to Afghanistan to escape counter-terrorist operations in Pakistan. Pakistan’s concerns were supported in a recent report presented to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that revealed massive TTP presence inside Afghanistan.

“A large terrorist group present in Afghanistan, Tehreek-e Taliban Pakistan, is led by Amir Noor Wali Mehsud, supported by his deputy Qari Amjad and TTP spokesperson Mohammad Khorasani,” the 26th report of the UN Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team read. “Many former TTP members have already joined ISIL-K and Member States expect that the group and its various splinter groups will align themselves with ISIL-K. The total number of Pakistani foreign terrorist fighters in Afghanistan, posing a threat to both countries, is estimated at between 6,000 and 6,500, most of them with TTP,” it concluded.

  • Action against Jahangir Tareen hurt me like dropping my cousin Majid Khan from cricket team: PM

Action against Jahangir Tareen hurt me like dropping my cousin Majid Khan from cricket team: PM

Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has said that taking action against his friend and colleague Jahangir Khan Tareen over the sugar scandal hurt him like dropping his cousin and former Pakistan cricketer Majid Khan from the team.

“These were two of the hardest decisions I ever had to make in my life,” he said while speaking to senior journalist Kamran Khan during a wide-ranging interview on Dunya News.

To a question regarding the inquiry into the sugar crisis, the premier said Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) had “threatened Wajid Zia, warning him to stop whatever he was doing”. He said that it thought that the government would buckle if the sugar prices rose.

“I will fight the sugar mafia,” he added.

The PM noted that sugar sales in Punjab doubled in July but it emerged that it was being sent from Punjab to Sindh.

“The PTI is not in power in Sindh so they are hoarding sugar there,” he explained. “The Sharifs, the Zardaris, and many other politicians own sugar mills.”

“They can blackmail me as much as they want but I will not let off the hook unless and until they abide by the law,” the premier said, adding that the public institutions would make a decision on the sugar inquiry report.

He then mentioned his longtime friend Tareen, saying he “did the most with me in my struggle over the past seven to eight years”.

PM Imran also categorically denied that Pakistan would recognise Israel — a few days after the UAE established formal relations with Tel Aviv — stating that Islamabad won’t do so until Palestinians are not given their right to a “just settlement”.

“Whichever country wants to do it [recognise Israel], our stance is very clear. Our stance was cleared by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in 1947-48,” said PM Imran. “Which was that we will never recognise Israel till the Palestinians do not get their rights.”

He said that Pakistan will not establish diplomatic relations with Israel till the Palestinians do not get a separate state of their own, which the people of Palestine accept, based on the Two-Nation Theory.

The premier said that if Pakistan agreed to recognising Israel and gave up its principled stance then it will have to stop raising the issue of Kashmir as the situation in the disputed area was the same.

“Hence, Pakistan cannot recognise Israel,” he stated.

The premier said Karachi would have progressed if not for the ethnic politics of the 1980s.

Earlier today, Khawaja Izharul Hassan, a leader of the ruling PTI’s coalition partner, the MQM-P, had said a committee to resolve Karachi’s problems was not a solution.

It was reported late last week that the federal and Sindh governments had agreed on forming a committee comprising representatives of the city’s three main stakeholders — the ruling PTI, PPP, and the MQM-P — to address the metropolis’ longstanding civic issues.

In his comments today, the premier said looking at the port city in its current state was painful. “The MQM-P founder spread hatred among people [of Karachi] and divided them; he wreaked havoc in Karachi.”

“The situation in Karachi is dire,” he added.

He said he has approached the courts on the issue of local government system in Sindh.

“I intervene in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa because we have the PTI’s government there,” the premier explained, adding that if the Centre intervened in Sindh, the provincial leadership “will make a fuss”.

“We are going to do whatever we can for Karachi,” he vowed.

Speaking about his political career, PM Imran said his “whole life had been spent in struggle”. “I was nine years old when I started this struggle,” he added.

“Those who do not know how to struggle falter,” the PM underlined.

Referring to the time he was voted into office, he said Pakistan was close to defaulting, the public institutions were destroyed and the rupee weakened.

“Depreciation of the rupee leads to inflation,” he said, adding that the government was paying instalments for the loans the rulers of the past had obtained.

He said that while he was attempting to make the country a welfare state, the elites gathered and are trying to overthrow the government.

With regard to power, the premier said electricity in Pakistan was costlier but sold at a cheaper rate, noting that “we are producing the most expensive electricity in the world”.

If electricity prices had not been revised upwards, the country would have had to take loans, he noted.

A comprehensive power policy is set to be introduced in a couple of weeks, he added.

Speaking of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the prime minister said many people talked about how he did not understand the crisis.

“Our party and the Opposition leaders kept saying that everything should be shut down during the corona [virus pandemic],” he noted. “A strict lockdown was imposed in Sindh; that was their [provincial government’s] right after the 18th Amendment.”

“We had to endure a month of criticism during corona,” he said. “I told Bill Gates that we saved our lower class by imposing a smart lockdown,” he added.

Referring to Pakistan’s anti-graft watchdog, the National Accountability Bureau, he said: “We’re not dictating [NAB’s actions].”

Speaking of the Opposition parties, the PM said their leaders had only one goal and that was to blackmail him. “Should I have given them NRO,” he asked rhetorically.

He said the Opposition parties wished to do away with clauses that would eventually bring an end to NAB. They were also blackmailing the government over legislation related to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), he added.

Throwing a jibe at the PML-N vice-president, he noted that there was stone-pelting when Maryam Nawaz was going to NAB’s office in Lahore for an appearance.

“They go to the NAB as if Nelson Mandela is going to NAB.”

“We are strengthening the FIA [Federal Investigation Agency],” the prime minister said, adding that the accusation against the Punjab chief minister pertaining to alcohol licensing was a “joke”.

The chief executive of the biggest province, Punjab, was summoned over the alcohol licensing issue but excise department’s officials should have been called, he noted.

Summoning Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar led to suspicions, he lamented.

“Attacks are launched at Usman Buzdar and that makes me very sad,” he said. “He has become the chief minister for the first time and he is learning,” he said, adding that Punjab was making rapid progress.

  • Fact Check: ‘Shah Mahmood Qureshi slaps principal secretary for not letting him see PM Imran’

Claim: Shah Mahmood Qureshi (SMQ) slapped PM Khan’s Principal Secretary Azam Khan.

Fact: SAPM Shabaz Gill, PTI Focal Person on Digital Media Arsalan Khalid and SMQ have refuted the claim.

Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Political Communication Dr Shahbaz Gill has rebutted news reports claiming that Foreign Minister (FM) Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who is reportedly in hot water over his statement that strained ties between Islamabad and Riyadh, has slapped a top bureaucrat over his refusal to let the minister into PM Imran Khan’s office.

A private media outlet had earlier in the day claimed that a scuffle broke out between FM Qureshi and PM Imran’s Principal Secretary Azam Khan after the latter, earlier this week, barred the minister from entering the premier’s office, leading to a spat.

Citing sources, Abb Tak news had reported that Qureshi slapped the senior bureaucrat and entered PM Imran’s office. “He also complained to the premier about the principal secretary’s behaviour,” the report had claimed.

With the claim going viral on Tuesday evening, Dr Gill broke silence, saying that the government would also be approaching the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) against the television channel.

He also tweeted to urge the channel to act responsibly when it came to reporting about prominent individuals such as the FM and the principal secretary.

Qureshi has also reportedly rebutted the claim. “I have not slapped Azam Khan,” he was quoted as saying by a private media outlet later in the day.

It is pertinent to note that the report comes a day after a foreign media outlet claimed that Qureshi was likely to lose his post and be replaced by Federal Minister for Human Rights Dr Shireen Mazari as the government and military mend ties with Saudi Arabia.

The claim had been denied by Focal Person to the PM on Digital Media Dr Arslan Khalid.

    VERDICT: MISLEADING

  • Naya Pakistan: Two years on, only one promise fulfilled, over 30 in progress, six in limbo

Naya Pakistan: Two years on, only one promise fulfilled, over 30 in progress, six in limbo

With two years passing since the oath-taking ceremony of Imran Khan as the country’s 22nd prime minister (PM), much has changed in line with his vision of formation of “Naya Pakistan”, his teammates say.

Amid such claims by government members, Dawn has monitored progress on major promises from the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) 2018 election manifesto, as well as any important pledges made in the course of its term.

According to the report, while over 30 promises are reportedly in progress, six lie in limbo, only one has been fulfilled and five others are partially complete.

As per details of the promises, that of tackling corruption has been completed by PM Imran’s team and those regarding affordable housing, facilitating overseas Pakistanis, minority rights, police reforms and crime control are partially complete.

Another 37 promises are in progress whereas among those that lie in limbo are the ones pertaining to madrassah reforms, provision of housing units to persons with disabilities, strengthening of parliament, gender parity, elimination of water mafia and criminal justice reforms.

  • VIDEO: On-air Zartaj Gul mistakes Ziaul Haq’s death anniversary for his birthday

VIDEO: On-air Zartaj Gul mistakes Ziaul Haq’s death anniversary for his birthday

Minister of State for Climate Change Zartaj Gul Wazir is once again in the crosshairs of trolls after saying former dictator General Ziaul Haq was born on August 17, which is actually the day he died in a plane crash.

Speaking during a talk show at a private TV channel, Gul, in what became a failed jibe at the Pakistan Muslim Lague-Nawaz (PML-N) said she wanted to congratulate Mian Javed Latif on the birth anniversary of his party’s “founder”, Zia.

“I want to congratulate Mian Javed Latif for it’s probably the birthday of Gen Ziaul Haq — who created this party [the PML-N] — as far as I remember,” the PTI minister said.

The anchor and other participants in the show were left dumbfounded on the state minister’s lack of knowledge about the political history of Pakistan, Geo reported.

Anchorperson Nadeem Malik then corrected her, saying “today is August 17 when Gen Zia and many others were killed in a plane crash in 1988”.

Despite being corrected, Zartaj tried to save the crumbling pieces of her sarcastic comment, saying, “Okay, whatever, even if it was an accident, they should celebrate it because he created the party. They should commemorate the anniversary of his martyrdom.”

    WATCH VIDEO:

Fellow talk show guests — Sindh government spokesperson Senator Murtaza Wahab and Latif, the PML-N leader — were speechless, with the former putting his head in his hands and the latter showing an expression of contempt.

This isn’t the first time that Gul had to face embarrassment for her remarks as earlier she had been brutally trolled for an ill-informed comment regarding COVID-19.

  • Foreign Minister Qureshi likely to be replaced by Shireen Mazari as govt, army mend Riyadh ties: report

Foreign Minister Qureshi likely to be replaced by Shireen Mazari as govt, army mend Riyadh ties: report

Rumours regarding the removal of Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, ever since his statement regarding ditching Saudi Arabia for Kashmir’s sake, have gone rife in the federal capital as reports claim he is likely to be replaced by Federal Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari amid Islamabad’s attempts to mend ties with Riyadh.

Qureshi had earlier this month accused the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) of dilly-dallying on the Kashmir issue in remarks that were seen by Riyadh as an attack on its leadership of the organisation.

“I am once again respectfully telling OIC that a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) is our expectation. If you cannot convene it, then I’ll be compelled to ask Prime Minister Imran Khan to call a meeting of the Islamic countries that are ready to stand with us on the issue of Kashmir and support the oppressed Kashmiris,” Qureshi had said during an interview.

Days after his statement, as diplomatic strains occur between Islamabad and Riyadh over the Kashmir issue, it was announced by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa will be visiting Saudi Arabia to discuss regional security issues and Kashmir dispute with the Saudi leadership.

“Yes, he [Gen Bajwa] is travelling,” the Pakistan Army spokesperson told the foreign media outlet, adding that the visit was pre-planned and “primarily military affairs oriented”.

However, reports had said that while the two countries are traditionally close and Saudi Arabia in 2018 gave Pakistan a $3 billion loan and $3.2 billion oil credit facility to help its balance of payments crisis, Riyadh is irked by criticism from Islamabad that Saudi Arabia has been lukewarm on the Kashmir territorial dispute, motivating COAS Bajwa’s fence-building visit Sunday.

Meanwhile, Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari publicly criticised Qureshi, saying his statements had let down both the Kashmiris and PM Imran.

While her statement was seen as the first step to replace Qureshi in a bid to pacify the Saudis, it suggests that the Imran Khan government is publicly distancing itself from the actions and statements of the incumbent foreign minister.

If there is any truth to the claims, it won’t be the first time cash-strapped Pakistan will be prioritising relations with Saudi Arabia, as most recently, Islamabad had also pulled out of a Muslim nations’ forum in Malaysia at the last minute on insistence by Riyadh, which saw the gathering as an attempt to challenge its leadership of the OIC.

Saudia Arabia had already made Pakistan pay back $1 billion two weeks ago, forcing it to borrow from another close ally, China, and Riyadh is yet to respond to Pakistan’s request to extend the oil credit facility.

  • PM praises Islamabad top cop as capital ‘safer city than London, Paris’

Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has lauded Islamabad Inspector General (IG) Muhammad Amir Zulfiqar Khan over the ongoing operation against land grabbers and a significant reduction in crime rate in the federal capital, which was also highlighted by a report of the World Crime Index issued by the international organisation, Numbeo, earlier this year.

According to a statement from Islamabad police, the crime index decreased to 28.63 per cent in 2020 from 32.88 per cent last year. Islamabad was 232nd on the list earlier while it stands at 301 in the recent ranking of most vulnerable cities to crime in the world.

Its ranking is far better compared to Sydney, Berlin, Moscow, London, Paris and Shanghai, said the report issued after a survey of 374 cities of the world in January.

While the top cop had back then said that crime rate decreased in the capital as a result of an effective strategy, he has now briefed the premier on the same, after which he has been tasked to continue full-scale operation against the land mafia involved in land grabbing.

According to Information Minister Shibli Faraz, the police have retrieved 1,537 acre land from grabbers over Rs450 billion in Islamabad.

In addition to this, the capital has also witnessed a decline in crime up to 15 per cent.
