Sidra Niazi attacked by trolls after remarks on Babar Azam, cricket team

Renowned Pakistani actress Sidra Niazi is making headlines after her remarks about star batsman Babar Azam and Pakistan cricket team went viral.

She appeared on a private channel where she was asked about her favourite cricketer.

“Who is your favourite player in the playing XI,” Sidra was asked, to which she replied, “No one, baba, no one.”

The host, surprised by her response, persisted. “Why? Why is that? Babar Azam?” She responded, “There should be a reason to like someone, right?”

The host then said, “Out of 11 players, not even one could give you a single reason?” Sidra reiterated, “No one.”

Her comments quickly went viral. Actress Rabya Kulsoom also reacted humorously by sharing the video on her Instagram story and writing, “Allah aapke Instagram profile ki hifazat farmaye ab!” (May Allah protect your Instagram profile now!).

Following the backlash, Sidra Niazi reshared Rabya’s story with a caption expressing her frustration over the growing intolerance on differing opinions in society.

“These days, it is so difficult to express yourself freely. You can’t discuss religion without offending someone, you can’t share your opinion on politics without being labelled or attacked, and now it seems you can’t even voice your thoughts on cricket without facing backlash. The real issue isn’t trolls who abuse you, your parents, and your family; it’s the upbringing and mindset that enable such behaviour. A society where people are afraid to speak their minds, where constructive discussion on any topic is impossible, and where the loudest, most abusive, and aggressive voices dominate the narrative is a worrying trend. We need to pause and reflect on the kind of society we want to build.”

Shahid Afridi criticizes Wasim Akram over team changes suggestions

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has strongly reacted to swing legend Wasim Akram’s suggestion of msking major changes in the national cricket team.

Following Pakistan’s early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy, Wasim Akram, along with several other former cricketers, showed disappointment and suggested that five to six senior players should be dropped. He argued that despite their presence, the national team has failed to win major tournaments.

Speaking on Ten Sports, Wasim Akram criticized players like Mohammad Rizwan and urged selectors to make bold decisions to improve the team. He emphasized that Pakistan should start planning for the 2026 T20 World Cup immediately.

“We have been losing despite having these players for years. The time has come to make five to six big changes in the team. Even if we have to endure defeats for six months, we should support and give opportunities to young players,” said Wasim Akram.

However, Shahid Afridi, while speaking on a private TV channel, questioned Akram’s remarks and asked, “Wasim Bhai should tell me, if we drop five or six players, do we have replacements ready to take their place?”

Afridi added that removing big names from the squad could also lead to criticism, and if the desired results still don’t materialise, then what would be the next step.

He further stated, “When new players come in, they will use the excuse that they are preparing for the World Cup, and then the process of ‘surgery’ will start all over again.”

It merits mention that Pakistan was knocked out of the ICC Champions Trophy in the first round after suffering humiliating defeats against New Zealand and India.

Following immense criticism from fans and former cricketers, reports suggest that key players like Babar Azam, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, and Shaheen Shah Afridi may be rested for the upcoming tour of New Zealand.

Jos Buttler resigns as England’s white-ball captain

Jos Buttler has stepped down as England’s white-ball captain after the team’s early exit from the Champions Trophy.

The 34-year-old will lead England one last time in their final group match against South Africa on Saturday.

England have struggled in recent ODIs, losing 15 of their last 21 matches, including to arch-rivals Australia and Afghanistan that knocked them out of the Champions Trophy.

Jos Buttler said, “The team could not perform well under my leadership in the Champions Trophy. England’s results under my captaincy have been disappointing. It’s the right time for me and the team.”

He further added, “I want to focus on my cricket.”

Buttler became England’s white-ball captain in June 2022 after Eoin Morgan retired. He led the team to victory in the T20 World Cup later that year in Australia.

However, England failed to defend their titles in the last two global tournaments – the 2023 ODI World Cup in India and the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.

As ODI captain, Buttler won 18 out of 44 matches, with 25 losses and one no result. His record in T20s is slightly better, with 26 wins, 22 losses, and three no results in 51 games.

Shoaib Malik responds to critics after monthly salary reveal

Former Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik has responded to criticism regarding his role as a mentor and his reported salary of five million rupees per month.

A video of Malik addressing his critics has gone viral on social media, where he urged cricketers and journalists to do their homework before making comments.

Malik dismissed concerns about his salary, saying, “I earned far more than five million per month even before accepting the mentorship role. I have proof to back my statement and will share it if necessary.”

“We are here to improve the Pakistan cricket team, and we understand the real issues,” Malik said.

Emphasising his extensive experience in global cricket, he pointed out that he has played professionally across various leagues worldwide. “If I didn’t have anything to offer, why would international teams invite me to play?” he questioned.

Malik assured that he and the other mentors have provided detailed reports to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and that work is underway to address the team’s shortcomings.

The backlash against Shoaib Malik intensified after Pakistan’s early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy

Following the team’s disappointing performance, Malik sang the Bollywood song “Dil Ke Armaan Aansuon Mein Beh Gaye” during a studio discussion, seemingly mocking Pakistan’s defeat. This act drew strong reactions from former cricketers and analysts.

Former Test cricketer Sikandar Bakht criticised PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, questioning why a board-hired mentor was publicly making fun of Pakistan cricket. “Those who are getting paid five million a month were sitting on TV making fun of the team,” Bakht said.

Similarly, former cricketer and analyst Basit Ali demanded that the PCB take action against Malik for ridiculing the national team.

It is worth noting that the PCB has appointed five mentors—Waqar Younis, Misbah-ul-Haq, Shoaib Malik, Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Saqlain Mushtaq—on a three-year contract.

Each mentor will receive 5 million rupees per month, amounting to PKR 60 million annually. This is the highest salary package ever offered in domestic cricket for such roles. The mentors will not only provide guidance to the team but also serve as advisors throughout the year.

Despite the criticism, Shoaib Malik remains firm in his stance, asserting that his contributions will help the Pakistan cricket team improve in the long run.

  • Pakistan-India likely to play three matches in Asia Cup 2025

Pakistan-India likely to play three matches in Asia Cup 2025

Cricket fans could witness three exciting clashes between India and Pakistan in the 2025 Asia Cup, which is tentatively scheduled for September.

The tournament, set to be played in the T20 format, will feature 19 matches and is expected to take place between the second and fourth week of the month.

While India was initially supposed to host the event, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has decided to stage it in a neutral venue amid political tensions between the two nations. The final venue is yet to be confirmed, but Sri Lanka and the UAE are the frontrunners. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will remain the official host of the tournament.

The tournament format ensures at least one Pakistan-India encounter in the group stage. If both teams qualify for the Super Four round, they will face each other again. If both sides reach the final, a potential third meeting could happen, making it a thrilling prospect for cricket fans worldwide.

Eight teams, including Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, UAE, Oman, and Hong Kong, will participate in the tournament. However, Nepal, which played in the 2023 edition, has failed to qualify this time.

With the matches likely to be held in the evening to avoid extreme heat, the 2025 Asia Cup is expected to deliver high-intensity cricket. If Pakistan and India meet three times, the tournament will undoubtedly be one of the most anticipated cricket events of the year.

The six-team event will feature 34 matches from April 11 to May 18. Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium will host 13 games, including the two eliminators and the final.

A special exhibition match is also planned before the main event, scheduled for April 8 in Peshawar. The teams for this match will be confirmed at a later date.

For PSL 10, Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium will host 11 matches, including the Qualifier on May 13. Karachi’s National Bank Stadium and Multan Cricket Stadium will host five matches each.

The tournament will include three double-header match days, with two taking place on weekends and one on a national holiday (May 1).

Multan Sultans, who won the sixth edition of PSL, will face Lahore Qalandars on April 22 at Multan Cricket Stadium, marking the venue’s first match of the tournament.

Peshawar Zalmi, the champions of PSL 2017, will play five of their matches at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, while Quetta Gladiators, the winners of PSL 4, will play five matches at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

  • ‘Pakistani hospitality at its best’: Viral video shows man not letting Vikrant Gupta, others pay

‘Pakistani hospitality at its best’: Viral video shows man not letting Vikrant Gupta, others pay

Indian sports journalist Vikrant Gupta recently visited Lahore for the Champions Trophy 2025 and shared his experiences about the trip, cricket, and the love for the game that transcends borders.

Adding to this warm reception, another moment caught attention in a video circulating online. While visiting a local food cart, people insisted that he should not pay for his food, saying they would cover the cost instead.

During an interview with Samaa, when asked about his experience in Lahore, Gupta expressed his appreciation for the hospitality he received. He said, “The hospitality has been fantastic. As a journalist, when you travel, you know that you are not the story. Of course, you are chasing stories. But here, in the last two days, it felt like people started believing that I am the story, which is not correct.”

Gupta was surprised to witness the admiration for Indian players firsthand. He shared an incident from a live show he conducted for Sports Tak in Pakistan. “During the show, people were chanting ‘Kohli, Kohli!’ It was an eye-opening moment for me. So, I asked, ‘Just Kohli, Kohli?’ Then, the crowd responded with ‘Rohit, Rohit!’ I asked again, and they said, ‘Dhoni, Dhoni! Bumrah!’ It was a pleasant surprise for me as an Indian,” he said.

He recalled a similar experience during the 2022 T20 World Cup in Melbourne when Pakistan lost a close match to India. Even after the loss, Pakistani fans were seen praising Virat Kohli’s innings.

“I went live after the match, and for the first 10 minutes, only Pakistani fans were coming out. Despite their team losing a nail-biting game, they were saying, ‘Yes, we are sad, but did you see Virat’s batting?’ I was stunned. Virat’s century was celebrated here. I hope he saw those videos,” he further added.

Shifting the focus to cricket, Vikrant Gupta discussed India’s strong performance in recent years and Pakistan’s struggle to maintain consistency. He pointed out, “India has been winning consistently in a dominating fashion. If we only keep talking, nothing will change. You cannot be like an ostrich hiding its head in the sand, pretending not to see the reality. You need vision.”

He said, “Countries like Australia and England have had strong cricketing traditions, but even they faced ups and downs. India, after winning the 1983 World Cup, took time to build itself into a consistent cricketing force. But over the last 20 years, India has become a dominant team, defeating big teams on their turf.”

He believes that Pakistan used to rely heavily on individual performances, but now, even that is not enough. He said, “Up until 2017 or even the 2019 World Cup, Pakistan had players who could individually turn the game around. Now, against India, the team plays in a strange manner. This is not just about India; it is a reflection of how Pakistan is performing against other teams as well.”

Gupta concluded by emphasising that Pakistan needs to focus on long-term development rather than depending on a few standout players.

It is worth mentioning that Pakistan’s consecutive defeats to New Zealand and arch-rivals India led to their elimination from the Champions Trophy 2025.

  • VIDEO: Former Indian cricketing stars rush to Babar Azam’s support amid widespread bashing

VIDEO: Former Indian cricketing stars rush to Babar Azam’s support amid widespread bashing

Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam has been facing intense criticism for his performances in recent years. His latest outing in the highly anticipated Champions Trophy 2025 match against India saw him score just 23 runs, contributing to Pakistan’s defeat.

Amid the backlash, former Indian cricketers Navjot Singh Sidhu, Harbhajan Singh, and Sunil Gavaskar have stepped forward to support Babar. They urged Pakistani fans to show respect and stand by their star player during tough times.

Sidhu emphasized Babar’s contributions to Pakistan cricket over the years and expressed confidence in his ability to perform in the future. He urged fans to support him rather than criticize him.

“Babar has scored runs for you, and he will continue to play for your team for a long time. Learn to respect him; don’t throw stones from afar. A player like Babar doesn’t come around often, and instead of lifting him up during difficult times, you are pushing him down. That is not how you treat your heroes,” Sidhu said.

While backing Babar, Sidhu also pointed out some technical flaws in his batting and offered suggestions for improvement. “Babar needs to work on his foot positioning to better handle the bounce and movement of the ball. If he refines his stance and improves his technique against swing bowling, he will be an even greater force in international cricket,” he added.

Despite the recent criticism, Sidhu believes Babar is a highly talented player who can regain his form with proper guidance and support. “Every cricketer goes through ups and downs. With the right mentorship and encouragement, Babar can rise back to his peak form and silence his critics,” he remarked.

Former Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar also defended Babar, praising his elegant stroke play. “He gives a lot of joy with his cover drive. Even against India, look at the flick shot he hit for a boundary through mid-wicket—what a shot that was! The entire world wants to watch such shots,” Gavaskar said.

Echoing similar sentiments, former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh criticized the excessive scrutiny Babar faces. “Babar Azam faces constant criticism while the real issues are ignored. Pakistan conceded 320 runs, yet only his strike rate was questioned. Babar lacks support. Cricket is a team game—one player alone cannot win every match. Pakistan needs a collective effort, they can not just blame one player,” Harbhajan asserted.

Meanwhile, cricket fans on social media have voiced their concerns, arguing that Babar rarely plays match-winning innings and focuses more on personal records. Many believe he needs to step up in crucial games and prove his worth as a leader and a match-winner.

It is worth mentioning that Pakistan’s consecutive defeats to New Zealand and arch-rivals India led to their elimination from the Champions Trophy 2025.

  • ACC mulls moving Asia Cup 2025 from India to UAE

ACC mulls moving Asia Cup 2025 from India to UAE

Media reports suggest that the Asia Cup 2025 may be moved from India to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The tournament is originally scheduled to take place in India this year, but there is a strong possibility of it being hosted in the UAE in September.

According to reports, India holds the hosting rights for the tournament. However, due to political tensions between India and Pakistan, the event is likely to be played at a neutral venue.

The final decision on the venue will be made by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). Reports indicate that Sri Lanka and the UAE are being considered as potential hosts, but no final decision has been reached yet.

The Asia Cup will be played in the T20 format, with 19 matches scheduled over two weeks. A total of eight teams, including Pakistan and India, will participate in the tournament.
