Winning start for skipper Shaheen as Pakistan beat South Africa in thriller ODI

Pakistan on Tuesday defeated South Africa by a narrow margin in the first One-Day International (ODI) at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.

As per the details, newly-appointed captain Shaheen Shah Afridi won the toss and chose to field first.

Batting first, South Africa posted 263 runs in 49.1 overs. The Proteas made a flying start with an impressive opening partnership headlined by veteran Quinton de Kock (63) and debutant Lhuan-dre Pretorius (57).

Captain Matthew Breetzke (42) and Corbin Bosch (41) added valuable runs in the middle order to lift the total.

Pakistani bowlers put up a strong attack with pacer Naseem Shah (3/40) and spinner Abrar Ahmed (3/53) in lead. Saim Ayub (2/39) chipped in to keep the visitors in check.

Chasing 264, Pakistan’s innings turned into a nerve-wracking affair. The top order provided a steady start with Fakhar Zaman (35), Saim Ayub (32) and Mohammad Rizwan (43) contributing useful runs, but wickets at key moments built pressure.

All-rounder Salman Ali Agha played a match-winning knock, anchoring the chase with a crucial 62 runs and guiding the tail through the tense final overs to take Pakistan home with just two balls to spare.

South African bowlers, led by Donovan Ferreira (2/53), fought hard to defend the total but couldn’t stop Pakistan from sealing a dramatic win.

This thrilling victory hands Pakistan an early lead in the ODI series.

The remainder of the series will be contested at the same venue. The second ODI is scheduled for Thursday, November 6, followed by the third ODI on Saturday, November 8.

‘I don’t want to be humble’: Ronaldo says Messi isn’t better than him

The debate over who is the greatest footballer of all time has returned with Cristiano Ronaldo once again saying that Lionel Messi is not better than him.

In an interview with British journalist Piers Morgan, the Portuguese superstar, who currently plays for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, confidently placed himself above the Inter Miami forward.

In a teaser for the interview, Morgan asks Ronaldo whether Messi is better than him. The 39-year-old instantly replied, “Is Messi better than me? I disagree. I don’t want to be humble.”

As he nears the final years of his career, Ronaldo has set his sights on scoring 1,000 professional goals, a record no player has ever achieved.

Despite his bold claim, Ronaldo has often expressed respect for Messi. He has praised the Argentine on multiple occasions, once mentioning that they share a cordial relationship and that he would like to have dinner with him someday.

The full interview, which will explore Ronaldo’s rivalry with Messi and other moments from his life, will be released next Tuesday.

The two legends dominated football’s biggest stage for over 17 years, battling for Ballon d’Or titles and goal-scoring records as well as European championships.

With his latest brace for Al Nassr, Ronaldo now has 952 professional goals, sitting just 48 away from his 1,000-goal target. Messi, on the other hand, reached 891 goals after scoring in Inter Miami’s recent match against Nashville, trailing Ronaldo by 61 goals in their long-running race.

While fans remain divided over who is better, Messi is the only among the two to have won a World Cup for his country.

Big decisions expected as PCB, franchises meet over PSL future

Pakistan Super League (PSL) management and franchise owners will hold an important meeting today at the National Cricket Academy.

According to reports, the franchise owners had requested the PSL management to call this meeting, and the board accepted their request. The meeting will address concerns related to PSL 2026 and 2027, while PCB officials will also present their stance.

All six franchises, including Multan Sultans, have been invited to attend. Franchise owners have asked for a detailed briefing on commercial matters, the event window, and the EY evaluation report.

Reports added that the owners have also demanded clarity on the two-year title sponsorship agreement and its process.

The PCB has decided to add two new teams to Pakistan Super League. With the league completing ten years, the board plans to sign a new agreement with existing franchises later this month.

PSL Chief Executive Officer Salman Naseer said the league will expand its matches beyond Lahore, Karachi, Multan, and Rawalpindi to include Faisalabad and Peshawar.

He added that the PCB will issue tenders for the new team in November.

Shaheen Afridi reacts to his appointment as ODI captain

Fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi expressed pride and excitement after being appointed Pakistan’s ODI captain.

The 25-year-old left-arm pacer took over the captaincy from wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan last month and will now lead Pakistan in the 50-over format for the first time.

Speaking at a pre-series press conference, Shaheen called it an “honour and responsibility” to lead the national side, emphasizing teamwork and respect for the management’s decisions.

“It’s an honour to represent Pakistan as captain,” Shaheen said. “Wearing the national colours is always special, and with this new role comes added responsibility.”

He said Pakistan carried good momentum from the T20I series against South Africa and aimed to continue the same energy in the ODIs.

“The boys are in good rhythm after a strong T20 series. Our focus now is to carry that energy into one-day cricket and improve in the areas that matter,” he added.

When asked about leadership changes and his previous experience as T20I captain, Shaheen remained composed and focused on his goals.

“Our job is to play cricket and serve Pakistan in whatever role we’re given,” he stated.

“Leadership decisions rest with the board and management, and we respect that. My only focus right now is on performing well and helping the team grow in ODIs.”

The star pacer also praised Babar Azam, who recently returned to form in the T20I series, calling him one of Pakistan’s most dependable performers.

“Every player goes through ups and downs. Babar’s class is never in doubt,” Shaheen said.

“Just because he doesn’t perform in a couple of matches doesn’t make him a bad player. For the last four or five years, he’s been our most consistent performer and the highest run-scorer in both T20Is and ODIs.”

“Whenever our senior players contribute, the team ends up winning. Babar’s return to form is a huge boost for us.”

Shaheen will lead Pakistan in a three-match ODI series against South Africa, which will be played from November 4 to 8 in Faisalabad.

‘Don’t like it’: Wasim Akram opens up about mixing sports with politics

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has shared his honest thoughts on what’s damaging the spirit of the game, urging cricket authorities to bring fairness and unity back to the sport.

In an interview with Wisden, the legendary fast bowler said, “What I don’t like in cricket is politics. I am sorry. Straightforward. Sports should be away from politics.”

Akram said cricket has become increasingly divided and urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) and national boards to take responsibility. “Pick every player from every nation. Be brave, be bigger, but that’s not happening. That’s where I think the ICC comes in. That’s where cricket boards come in. It doesn’t matter who owns the leagues, doesn’t matter who owns the teams in the leagues, every player from every nation should be picked up,” he added.

Akram’s remarks come in the backdrop of rising tension and visible divisions in international cricket.

During the 2025 Asia Cup, India’s conduct became a major talking point after Indian players avoided handshakes with Pakistani cricketers. The controversy deepened when the Indian team declined to accept the trophy from PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi during the presentation ceremony.

‘It was my mehndi day’; Usman Tariq got national team call on his wedding

Pakistan secured a 2-1 T20I series win against South Africa on October 31, with debutant bowler Usman Tariq grabbing all the attention with his unique bowling action.

Usman’s unusual action involves a slight pause before releasing the ball, a method that impressed onlookers as he took two wickets in the series-deciding match. While captain Salman Ali Agha lifted the trophy, social media began buzzing over Usman’s bowling style, with some fans questioning its legality.

However, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has already cleared his action after biomechanical testing. Usman’s distinctive delivery style, which first raised eyebrows during PSL 2024, was later approved after multiple reviews.

Speaking in an interview before his debut, the 27-year-old said he received the selection call at an unexpected moment. “I was sleeping when I got the call, and it was the day of my mehndi ceremony,” Usman said with a smile. “When they told me I had been selected, I couldn’t believe it.”

He added, “Our regional president, Gohar Ali, called me to share the news. There was a family event going on at home, and everyone was so happy.”

    Instagram Post

Usman said he had continued playing cricket alongside his job in Dubai before deciding to return to Pakistan. “God gave me talent, and I kept playing even while working in Dubai,” he said. “The dream I saw while sitting at home is finally coming true.”

The young spinner thanked Quetta Gladiators for giving him a platform in the Pakistan Super League, which helped him reach the national side.

Explaining his unusual bowling style, Usman revealed in an earlier interview that it comes from a physical condition. “My action looks different because I have two elbows,” he said. “Doctors have confirmed that my arm cannot straighten completely. It’s a natural condition, and my body structure is different from a normal person’s.”

The PCB later confirmed that Usman Tariq cleared his bowling assessment at the board’s approved biomechanics lab in Lahore, making him eligible to represent Pakistan.
