Curtain divides male and female students as Afghan universities reopen

Afghan students have started returning to university for the first time since the Taliban’s takeover and in some cases, female students have been divided from their male classmates by curtains or boards down the middle of the classroom.

According to Reuters, teachers and students at universities in Afghanistan’s largest cities including Kabul, Kandahar, and Herat stated that female students were being segregated in class, taught separately, or restricted to certain parts of the campus.

While on a call with Reuters, Anjila, a 21-year-old student at Kabul University said, “Putting up curtains is not acceptable. I really felt terrible when I entered the class. We are gradually going back to 20 years ago.”

“Female students sat separately from males. But classrooms were not physically divided”, she added.

A document outlining guidelines for resuming class has been circulating which lists measures such as the mandatory wearing of hijabs and separate entrances for female students. However, it was unclear if the document represented official Taliban policy.

A senior Taliban official told the agency that classroom dividers were “completely acceptable”, and that given Afghanistan’s “limited resources and manpower” it was best to “have the same teacher teaching both sides of a class”.

The photographs were shared by Avicenna University in Kabul and widely circulated on social media, prompting people to ask if women would be given their rights to education and work under Islam.

When the Taliban last ruled from 1996-2001, the group banned girls from school and women from university and work.

“I had noticed all these hundreds and hundreds of empty vaccine vials that were otherwise going to be wasted, and I thought they were just really beautiful and wanted to do something significant and meaningful with them,” Weiss said.

Weiss got permission to use the glass Moderna vaccine vials and made a beautiful chandelier.

Vietnamese court jails citizen for five years for spreading Covid-19

A 28-year-old Vietnamese man has been sentenced to five years in prison for breaching coronavirus quarantine protocols and spreading the virus to others, reports Reuters.

According to state-run Vietnam News Agency, Le Van Tri was convicted of “spreading dangerous infectious diseases” at a one-day trial on Monday at the people’s court of the southern province of Ca Mau.

“Tri travelled back to Ca Mau from Ho Chi Minh City and breached the 21-day quarantine regulations. He infected eight people, one of whom died due to the virus after one month of treatment,” the news agency stated.

Due to the targeted mass testing, aggressive contact tracing, tight border restrictions, and strict quarantine, Vietnam had been one of the world’s coronavirus success stories.

Ca Mau, Vietnam’s southernmost province has reported only 191 cases and two deaths since the pandemic began, much lower than the country’s capital.

In the past few months, the vast majority of cases and deaths were reported. So far more than 536,000 cases have been reported.

Prior to this, the country sentenced two other people to 18-month and two-year suspended jail terms on the same charges.

  • Prince William and Kate Middleton set to leave London

Prince William and Kate Middleton set to leave London

Prince William and Kate Middleton are reportedly planning to leave London and set up camp near Windsor Castle.

According to a Royal Expert, Katie Nicholl “Neither William nor Kate have ever been London people and have never enjoyed the chaos of the city.”

“Whilst their home at Kensington Palace is highly secure, they have often felt overlooked and that they lacked privacy. The older their children get, the more apparent this has become,” she added.

If the Duke and Duchess relocate they would be just a few minutes drive away from the Queen. Nicholl, in a video stated, “Windsor seems like the ideal situation. The castle is huge in itself and is the Queen’s permanent residence now but there are other housing options for them.”

Bringing their kids to school is also pretty difficult because of the busy London roads and moving to Windsor can make the family’s lives easier.

According to her, everything is on the table and up for discussion.

Currently, the royal pair reside in Anmer Hall, Norfolk where they will spent England’s third lockdown this winter.

Man takes TV channel to court for showing too much ‘negative news’

A man in Russia has sued a local TV channel for leaving him “shook” by covering too much negative news and now he has to visit a psychologist for his mental well-being.

“Perviy Kanal has infringed on my rights as a citizen,” Igor Mirzoev alleged. Russian state-controlled media outlet, RT, reported the news on Thursday.

In his complaint, Mirzoev mentioned he was “forced to start seeing a psychologist because his general psychological state and emotional stability were disrupted.”

Mirzoev claimed he started suffering from “panic attacks and intrusive thoughts”.

The psychologist concluded Mirzoev was frequently watching Perviy Kanal’s content for several years, which, according to the complaint, “was dominated by negative news”.

In an analysis submitted to the court, 78.2 per cent of the broadcaster’s coverage was deemed to be “devoted to crimes, military conflicts and man-made disasters”.

“Mirzoev is now demanding $135,000 for moral damage, in addition to nearly $7,000 to pay for his psychologist’s bill, required to restore his psychological well-being,” RT reported.

A judge is set to hear the claim.

Video of bear stealing Amazon package from porch goes viral

A woman in the United States posted a video on social media showing a bear stealing her parcel from Amazon.

Kristin Levine of Bristol shared a home surveillance video on Facebook on Monday, showing the bear sauntering across her driveway with the package in its mouth.

“Yea so if anyone sees an Amazon package in the Chippens Hill area with my name on it…feel free to bring it back?” Levine wrote in her post.

Levine told NBC she received an alert from her security system about five minutes after Amazon delivered the package on the door and was “taken aback because I wasn’t expecting anyone else in my driveway.”

The bear, she said, ended up dropping off the parcel in a neighbour’s yard. It was apparently not interested in the contents: several rolls of toilet paper, she said.

“It was hysterical like I said, I knew nothing in there was going to be irreplaceable so it was a fun afternoon for sure,” Levine said.
