  • Iran launches state-approved ‘halal’ dating app to encourage marriage

Iran on Monday introduced a Muslim dating application to boost marriages in the country and help young people find a partner for themselves.

As per details, the app, Hamdam which means  “companion” in the Persian language allows users to “search for and choose their spouse.”

It is the only state-sanctioned platform of its kind in the Islamic republic, according to Iran’s cyberspace police chief, Colonel Ali Mohammad Rajabi.

While dating apps are popular in Iran, Rajabi said that all other platforms except Hamdam are illegal.

Developed by the government’s Tebyan Cultural Institute, Hamdam´s website claims it uses “artificial intelligence” to find matches “only for bachelors looking for permanent marriage and a single spouse.”

Tebyan head, Komeil Khojasteh said family values were endangered by outside forces.

“Family is the devil’s target, and (Iran’s enemies) seek to impose their own ideas” on it, he said, adding that the app helps create “healthy” families.

According to Hamdam’s website, users have to verify their identity and go through a “psychology test” before browsing.

When a match is found for the user, the app “introduces the families together with the presence of service consultants”, who will “accompany” the couple for four years after marriage. The registration is free for the users.

Iran’s authorities, including the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, have cautioned many times against the country’s rising rate of marriage and declining birth rates.

In March, Iran’s conservative-dominated parliament passed a bill titled “population growth and supporting families.”

It mandates the government to offer significant financial incentives for marriage and to encourage people to have more than two children while limiting access to abortion.

The law awaits approval by the Guardian Council, which is tasked with checking that bills are in accordance with Islamic law and the constitution.

Father reunited with kidnapped son after 24-year search

A man reunited with his kidnapped son after a 24-year hunt across China. After travelling half a million kilometres across China on a motorbike, handing out missing-person flyers, which cost him his savings and left him with huge debts, Guo Gangtang was finally reunited with his son.

As per reports, Guo Gangtang, 51, began searching for his then 2-year-old son after he was kidnapped in 1997 from their home in a village in the eastern province of Shandong.

When he tried to find his son, he found no trace but Guo did not give up and began a decades-long search.

Guo travelled China on a motorcycle with a flag that had his lost son’s picture and carrying a bag full of flyers.

Police in June tracked down a man matching his son’s description in central Henan province, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

After a DNA test confirming the relationship, a family reunion with his son Guo Xinzhen was arranged on Sunday.

The 26-year-old, Guo Xinzhen, is now a teacher.

Guo’s son was found after the Ministry of Public Security launched a nationwide campaign this January to solve cold cases involving child abduction.

Police have located and rescued 2,609 missing or abducted children this year, including adults who had gone missing or were kidnapped as kids. One victim was traced after 61 years.

Guo’s motorcycle journey of around 500,000 km (311,000 miles) took him to most of China’s provinces. He also went through 10 motorcycles.

In 2012, Guo set up a website “Tianya Xunqin”, which translates as “Find your family on the edge of the world”. It has since helped dozens of people locate family members, he told local media.

Guo Gangtang’s story has been covered extensively by local media over the years and inspired the 2015 hit film “Lost and Love” starring Chinese megastar Andy Lau in the role of a character based on Guo.

“I’ve found my son, and I want to get back to normal life as soon as possible,” Guo said in a video on his Tiktok social media page on Tuesday.

  • Billionaire Richard Branson achieves his space dream

British Billionaire, Richard Branson, flew into space on Sunday on his Virgin Galactic rocket plane and safely returned in the vehicle’s first fully-crewed test flight to space.

After the historic moment, he released a video of him and the crew during the flight on Twitter.

“I was once a child with a dream looking up to the stars. Now I’m an adult in a spaceship looking down to our beautiful Earth,” said Branson.

According to reports, the space plane took off from Spaceport America, a huge base built in the Jornada del Muerto desert. It reached a peak altitude of around 53 miles beyond the boundary of space and carried two pilots and four passengers, including Branson.

Shortly after the flight, the 70-year-old billionaire hugged his loved ones. He added, “Welcome to the dawn of a new space age.”

The mission’s success has made Branson the first tycoon — beating Bezos — to cross the final frontier in a ship built by his own company. However, the richest person in the world is due to fly on July 20 and he himself congratulated his friendly rival on Instagram.

Branson founded Virgin Galactic in 2004, but his dream almost came to an end in 2014 when an accident caused the death of a pilot, considerably delaying the program. The company has planned two further flights, and then the start of regular commercial operations from early 2022.

  • Giant pandas no longer endangered, says China

Giant pandas no longer endangered, says China

Giant pandas are no longer endangered, but they are still vulnerable, Chinese officials have said after years of conservation efforts as their number in the wild has reached 1,800.

As per reports, the country succeeded in saving its iconic animal through its long-term conservation efforts, including the expansion of habitats.

The latest classification upgrade “reflects their improved living conditions and China’s efforts in keeping their habitats integrated”, said Cui Shuhong, head of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment’s Department of Nature and Ecology Conservation at a news conference.

The news comes years after the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) had already removed the animal from its endangered species list and re-labeled it as “vulnerable” in 2016.

However, Chinese officials at that time did not consider the progress, saying that it could make people believe that conservation efforts could be relaxed.

This week’s announcement by China’s environmental ministry is the first time the animal’s status was changed on its endangered species list.

Experts have said that the success is mainly due to Chinese efforts to recreate and repopulate bamboo forests. Bamboo makes up 99 per cent of their diet, without which they are likely to starve.

Zoos have also attempted to increase numbers via captive breeding methods.

  • Meet Nora Al-Matrooshi, first Arab woman astronaut in training

Meet Nora Al-Matrooshi, first Arab woman astronaut in training

The UAE’s Nora al-Matrooshi is the first Arab woman to start training to be an astronaut, one of two Emiratis picked from thousands of applicants as the Gulf nation looks to the stars.

According to details, the 28-year-old mechanical engineer from Sharjah has dreamt about space since she was a little girl, learning about planets and stars at school.

She hoped since childhood to go into space one day. Her sailor ancestors explored the oceans that encouraged her to explore space one day.

“My mum’s side of the family are sailors. I’d say they explored the ocean. The term ‘astronaut’ means ‘star sailor’ in Greek,” said the softly-spoken Matrooshi.

Matrooshi and her 33-year-old fellow countryman, Mohammad al-Mulla will later this year go to the United States for the training at NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

They now join Sultan al-Neyadi and Hazza al-Mansoori in the Emirati fellowship of astronauts.

The two Emiratis are currently training in-house in the emirate of Dubai, from learning to speak Russian to flying lessons.

The UAE is a newcomer to the world of space exploration but is rapidly making its mark.

In September 2019, the oil-rich country sent the first Emirati into space as part of a three-member crew that blasted off on a Soyuz rocket from Kazakhstan for an eight-day mission.

Then in February, its “Hope” probe successfully entered Mars’ orbit on a journey to reveal the secrets of Martian weather, making history as the Arab world’s first interplanetary mission.

More recently in September 2020, Abu Dhabi said it planned to launch an unmanned rover to the moon by 2024 which would be the first trip to Earth’s satellite by an Arab country.

“If I can do it, then you can do it. If no one has done it before you, then just go ahead and be the first,” said Matrooshi.

“If you’re really passionate about what you’re doing, then you should just work hard for it and look for opportunities.”

Giant 3D cat installed in Tokyo to ‘cheer people up during the pandemic’

A gigantic 3D cat has been installed on a billboard at Tokyo’s busiest railway stations. The 1,664-square-foot curved LED screen shows a giant 3D calico cat in a 4K display between the hours of 7 am to 1 am. The 3D cat behaves like an actual cat.

It is first startled awake in the morning, by afternoon it stands and meows at people who pass by and then, in the evening, it lies down to fall asleep and rests its head on its paws.

It also greets pedestrians with “nyannichiwa” – a combination of “konnichiwa” for hello, and “nyan” for meow.

The display will officially launch next week. Test broadcasts have been going on since last month and many social media users have seen and shared how awestruck they are.

Japan is currently closed to tourists so the company behind the display has posted a live-streaming view of the billboard on YouTube. However, they said that specific angles can affect how the 3D effect is viewed.

Takayuki Ohkawa is a spokesman for Unika, one of the two companies behind the feline display. He told The New York Times that the cat does not have an official name yet, although fans have been calling it “Shinjuku east exit cat”. He explained the reason behind creating the 3D cat was to help cheer people up during the current pandemic.
