Ex-President Dr Arif Alvi’s clinic sealed in Karachi

A dental clinic operated by former President of Pakistan and PTI leader Dr Arif Alvi was sealed by the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) in Sindhi Muslim Cooperative Housing Society for running a“commercial operation in a residential building”.

A notice posted on the entrance of the clinic states that “the premise of the subject plot is hereby sealed on account of unauthorized construction.”

Dawn reports that the SBCA spokesman confirmed the notice calling it a “routine job” from the officials.

A team led by one of the Sindh Building Control Authority’s assistant directors visited the clinic on Thursday evening, stopped the staff from performing their regular activities, sealed the clinic, and put a notice outside the premises.

PTI Karachi spokesperson Fauzia Siddiqi termed the SBCA action a “vendetta” against the party from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and its ally in Sindh, the Pakistan Peoples Party.

PTI’s official account reacted to the news by blaming it on the PPP government: “These fascist moves really show the ugly side of People’s Party’s politics, completely exposing their fake claims of standing for democracy and human rights.

The former President’s son Awab Alvi took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their side of the story in which he claimed that first, a motorcyclist without a number plate surveyed the area and then a group of people arrived, claiming to be from Sindh Healthcare commission asking to be allowed inspection of the clinic but they left. Eventually, by night a team of “heavy handed thugs arrived” claiming to be from SBCA and sealed the clinic after a heated argument.

As per Awab, the clinic has been operational since 1992, and if there had been a violation, they could have easily responded to a notice. He termed the decision to be a result of Dr Arif Alvi’s recent aggression in a press conference in Lahore against the “Supreme Court’s shameful judgment on 63-A” and meeting “incarcerated PTI leaders”.

PTI leadership fears seven lawmakers may change loyalties

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has voiced concern that some of their Members of National Assembly (MNAs) might change their loyalties towards the ruling coalition government amidst constitutional amendments.

In a background briefing on Thursday, PTI party officials claimed that they had “lost confidence” in seven of their lawmakers in the National Assembly and added that steps are being taken to ensure that they do not change their allegiance to the incumbent government, Dawn News reported.

Responding to yesterday’s Supreme Court verdict over the 63A review case declaring that defected lawmaker vote would be counted, PTI officials said, “We have decided that our legislators will not attend any session of parliament until Oct 25.”

PTI officials further disclosed that two coalition government MNA’s are in touch with the opposition party, who had given assurances that they would stay away from parliament when constitutional amendments were tabled.

Pakistan’s forex reserves surge by $1.17 billion, reaching highest level since April 2022

The foreign exchange reserves held by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) increased by $1.17 billion in one week.

Despite the fact that the latest ‘surge’ is due to a loan, the SBP’s reserves are currently at their highest level since April 2022.

According to data from the central bank for the week ending September 27, Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves rose by more than 12 per cent as compared to the previous week, hitting $10.7 billion.

This increase is mainly due to a $1.03 billion loan received from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) programme.

Moreover, the country’s net reserves climbed by $1.11 billion, or 7.46 per cent, compared to the previous week, reaching $15.98 billion.

However, reserves held by commercial banks fell by $58.3 million, or 1.09 per cent, in the same period, now standing at $5.28 billion.

Since the start of the current fiscal year, SBP-held reserves have grown by $1.31 billion, or 13.98 per cent. In the current calendar year, reserves have increased by $2.48 billion, or 30.17 per cent.

24-karat gold price drops by Rs1,100 per tola in Pakistan

Gold rates in Pakistan continued their downward trend on the fourth trading day of the week after rebounding slightly in the previous session.

The latest rates shared by the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA) on Thursday revealed a decline of Rs1,100 per tola in the price of 24-karat gold.

The association said that the gold rate in the local market was recorded at Rs274,400 per tola following the latest drop.

This drop comes after the precious metal’s price rose by Rs600 per tola to Rs275,500 per tola on Wednesday.

Interestingly, the latest gold price is just about Rs2,600 lower than the all-time high price of Rs277,000 per tola seen last week.

Some non-investors are viewing this as an ideal time to sell gold, while a number of experts think that the gold price will go further up.

In the global market, bullion rates were seen in a narrow range. Spot gold was quoted at $2,655.03 per ounce around 03:33 GMT. The last record-high rate was reported on September 26, with spot gold quoted at $2,685.42.

Three runaway minor girls dressed as boys found by police

Three young girls, trying to escape to South Africa in the guise of boys, were taken into protective custody by Lahore police at the city’s main Railway Station on Tuesday.

All three girls were Grade 7 students from Dera Ghazi Khan.

The police said they were carrying a mobile phone with the password ‘My Love My Dream’.

Upon checking the phone’s data, the police could not find any evidence of outside involvement.

After recording their statements, the police contacted the Dera Ghaz Khan police, where their parents had registered a missing persons report and the police was searching for them.

Subsequently, the parents arrived in Lahore and took their daughters back home.

    The girls’ plan

The girls had an unrealistic and immature plan, influenced by social media, according to the police.

The investigation suggests that they first managed to escape to Lahore via bus. Their plan was to cross the Wagah border and enter India on foot. From there they planned to make their way to South Africa and pursue a glamourous life.

Dawn reports that “the police on duty at Lahore station took these girls into custody, who had travelled alone from DG Khan by a bus. The girls left their homes in search of a glamorous lifestyle.”

The girls impersonated boy by wearing their brothers’ clothes and cutting their hair short to appear male.

The police found out that the girls were carrying two pairs of scissors, maps of India, South Africa, a few clothes, and only Rs100 when the police found them.

A male passenger offered to take them to Karachi, but before they could decide, the police came in to intervene.

In their statements to the police, the girls also revealed their naive intentions to travel to South Africa.

An FIR regarding their disappearance had already been registered in their hometown, Dera Ghazi Khan.

They were found at the railway station platform by constable Shah Nawaz, who handed them over to the lady constables to protect them from any danger, including human traffickers.

However, the police urged parents to always monitor their children’s activities to protect them.

  • Supreme Court overturns 2022 verdict on Article 63A

Supreme Court overturns 2022 verdict on Article 63A

A larger five-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, has accepted the review petition of Article 63A filed by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).

The ruling given in May 2022 by a five-member larger bench headed by former CJ Umar Ata Bandial on Article 63A has been struck down by the apex court’s larger bench with a 5-0 majority.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa stated that Article 63A is redundant as the constitution already addresses the issue clearly, and added that judges can’t write the constitution.

The five-member bench included Justice Aminuddin Khan, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan, and Justice Mazhar Alam Miankhail, along with CJP Qazi Faez Isa.

A recent top court five member bench verdict by 3-2 stated that parliament members who vote against their parliamentary leader will be considered deviant, and their vote will also be not counted.

It should be mentioned here that the verdict of May 17, 2022 was authored by Justice Munib Akhtar.

However, the detailed review case verdict of Article 63A will be issued soon.

Article 63A noted that parliamentary members will lose their seats if they vote against the command of the party chief.

However, it is not stated that parliamentary vote can’t be counted.

During the hearing, Qazi Faez Isa stated that political parties are not subject to the authority of a judge or Chief Justice.

Counsel of founder Imran Khan of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Barrister Ali Zafar, objected to the composition of the bench on behalf of his client. As a result, the Supreme Court appointed him as judicial assistant.

Barrister Ali Zafar told the members of the larger bench that the parliamentary party directed the parliament members to vote in parliament and added that the Chief Parliamentary party could send ineligible references to parliamentary members if his order defied.

In response, the Chief Justice declared the vote against the party “a suicide attack.”
