FBR to scrap non-filers category, aims to strengthen banking-based economy

In a recent meeting with representatives of key industries, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial said that the government is planning to eliminate the category of non-filers, which will require everyone to make transactions through banking channels.

This is a part of FBR’s transformation plan to curb cash flows in the economy.

Langrial was of the view that non-filing is a fraudulent method established domestically. He said that the FBR will generate data to monitor citizens’ financial transactions.

Most importantly, property transactions will be categorised into only two groups: ineligible and eligible.

According to Dawn, businesspeople were briefed regarding the tax authority’s overhaul. Langrial said that the FBR has no option but to eliminate the issue of nil-filing and non-filing of returns.

This step is crucial because if the situation does not get better, it will be nearly impossible for the government to collect taxes.

It was revealed that the tax authority will establish disincentives for non-compliant taxpayers, starting with linking the availability of facilities such as investments and the opening of bank accounts to the filing of tax returns.

There will be no monetary transactions, and the source of funds will have to be established through digital interventions.

The meeting highlighted the potential tax gap across 20 sectors, with the largest gap reported in the textile sector at Rs700 billion.

Balochistan government held a press conference with Adeela Baloch, a would-be suicide bomber who issued an apology for her actions while talking to the media. She also shed light on her experiences in the mountains with other terrorists.

A government official started off by explaining that the Counter Terrorism Department along with local officials conducted an operation in wake of recent events of terrorism in Balochistan. There, they found out that a woman associated with the department of nursing in the District Headquarters Hospital of Turbat is missing and her family is searching for her. She was later identified as Adeela, daughter of Khuda Bakhsh, who has now been recovered from the mountains.

Adeela started off by explaining that she is from Turbat and got qualified as a nurse from Quetta’s Bolan Medical Hospital. She stated that she was also running a project of WHO-World Health Organization. “Even though my work requires to save lives of people but unfortunately, I was in touch with people who were manipulative,” she lamented as she shared how she was made to believe that suiciding bombing is the only way left to register her demands.

  • Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs sued for alleged 2001 rape

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs sued for alleged 2001 rape

A woman who alleges Sean “Diddy” Combs drugged and violently raped her, filming the assault so he could sell it for the titillation of others, said Tuesday she was suing the rapper.

Thalia Graves held a tearful press conference in Los Angeles, in which she said the emotional and mental pain from the 2001 attack remains with her.

The 54-year-old Combs was indicted last week on three criminal counts that allege he sexually abused women and coerced them into drug-fueled sex parties using threats and violence.

A spate of separate lawsuits, now including Graves’s, in the last year have painted the picture of a serial predator, sparking a massive fall from grace for the hip hop star.

“It goes beyond just physical harm caused by and during the assault. It’s a pain that reaches into your very core of who you are, and leaves emotional scars that will never be fully healed,” she told reporters.

“I’ve had PTSD, depression and anxiety. I’m emotionally scarred. It has been hard for me to trust others, to form healthy relationships, or even feel safe in my own skin.

“Flashbacks, nightmares and intrusive thoughts make me feel like it’s a constant struggle.”

In the criminal case, Combs is charged with racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking and transporting victims across state lines to engage in prostitution.

Prosecutors say Combs was the don of a criminal enterprise that ensnared women and forced them to commit sex acts under the threat of violence, financial insecurity and reputational ruin.

    – Mounting lawsuits –

Allegations have been building against Combs since last year, when singer Cassie, whose real name is Casandra Ventura, alleged Combs subjected her to more than a decade of coercion by physical force and drugs as well as a 2018 rape.

A spate of similarly lurid lawsuits since describe Combs as a violent man who used his celebrity to prey on women.

Combs has pleaded not guilty to the criminal charges. He has been jailed awaiting trial.

Graves’ lawyer, Gloria Allred, said her client’s claims were not part of the criminal indictment.

Graves’ suit, filed in the Southern District of New York, says she met the rapper through her then-boyfriend, who worked at Combs’s Bad Boy Records.

It details how Combs took her to his studio, giving her a glass of wine along the way that she believes was spiked. She says she lost consciousness shortly after arriving.

When she woke up, she was naked and bound. But when she called for help, Combs’ associate Joseph Sherman smashed her head into a pool table.

Combs and Sherman then raped her and she passed out again.

The suit says the two men repeatedly warned her over the following years not to talk about the alleged assault.

After Combs’s ex-girlfriend Cassie Venture went public with allegations about his criminal behavior last year, Graves discovered her assault had been taped and sold as pornography.

The legal action demands compensatory and punitive damages, as well as other costs and fees.

  • MDCAT trends on X as students get swamped with problems

MDCAT trends on X as students get swamped with problems

Thousands of students from across the country appeared in the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) on Sunday. Since then, social media is abuzz with allegations of paper leaks and mismanagement in the way exams were conducted.

As per Dawn, leaked papers and mismanagement have been reported in six exam centres, whereas exams were held in five cities across Sindh. In NED University of Engineering and Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), students and their parents had to go through trouble when they arrived. In some of the other centres, many had to wait for hours to enter the centre.

Some reported that the MDCAT paper leaked at midnight, and it was 70 to 80 percent similar to the actual paper.

However, Dow University has dismissed these allegations, stating that “the paper that went viral on social media is different from the MDCAT paper.”

Videos of students protesting inside Shahid Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU) against wrong answer keys of the multiple choice questions in the official exam have surfaced on social media.

Students from Sindh posted pictures of alleged leaked questions and compared them with the original one, implying that rampant injustice was meted out to hardworking students.

Some also posted about long lines outside Karachi’s NED University, pointing out the poor arrangements.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) said in a statement, “In Lahore, there were eight centres but here in Karachi only two centres were set up. The students and their parents were humiliated.”

Another student posted a screenshot of the denial of Dow University on Facebook, stating that the comments section was turned off. “Turning comments won’t turn off the truth. We demand accountability,” he stressed.

Students from Islamabad also lamented the release of the wrong answer key by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, which is affecting the expected result deeply.

In Balochistan, students claim that some students were allegedly caught cheating during an exam in Quetta.

As for the recent update, the students online are claiming that SZABMU has decided to award six grace marks to the students on the issue of wrong answer keys.
