  • Muhammad Amir predicted Shaheen Afridi’s career in 2021

Muhammad Amir predicted Shaheen Afridi’s career in 2021

A video of Pakistan’s left-arm fast bowler Muhammad Amir predicting Shaheen Shah Afridi’s career trajectory all the way back in in 2021 is going viral on social media.

    His predictions seems true today.

Shaheen was injured and out of Asia Cup 2022. He was also ruled out of a three-match ODI series ahead of the Asia Cup after suffering a knee injury during the first Test against Sri Lanka. Despite not being included in the squad, Shaheen left for the Netherlands tour, delaying his recovery in time for the Asia Cup.

The left-arm fast bowler is considered one of the most dangerous bowlers in world cricket, especially in the T20 format.

He is one of the permanent players of the Pakistan team. Former cricketers have been demanding that he be given rest to reduce his workload.

After being ruled out of the Asia Cup 2022, the team’s star fast bowler, Muhammad Amir, ‘s 2021 interview went viral, in which he specifically warned the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) management about Shaheen possibly getting injured.

He said, “India prepared their bowlers and used them to their best. Look at bowlers like Bumrah, Shami, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who are bowling at speeds of over 140 in domestic. Today, India has different teams, such as batsmen and bowlers, in different formats. They have prepared and included such players in the team according to their needs.”

“In Pakistan, a person wins the lottery and then he continues to play in all three formats. I am not against it, but you should have a rotation policy. Look at Cummins, Hazlewood, and Starc; you will never see them playing all the matches in all formats of the series. If someone plays Tests, he won’t play the first 2 ODIs; if he plays ODIs, he will rest in T20 format. Thus, they can play cricket for a long time,” he further added.

Amir said, “Shaheen is playing more and more. He is still young, but once he crosses 26 and continues to bowl in all three formats, you will surely take back my point that what I was saying was right.”

Pakistan is currently playing a Test series against Bangladesh, and Shaheen has not been included in the squad for the second Test match. Earlier in the first match, his average bowling speed was 127-130 Kilometers per hour (KPH).

Govt confirms installation of Web Monitoring System; blocks access to certain websites, applications

The government of Pakistan has formally confirmed the installation of the Web Monitoring System (WMS) for content management on the Internet.

According to the Cabinet, Pakistan Telecommunication (PTA) has installed WMS to manage content on the Internet, and the process of blocking websites and applications within Pakistan is underway.

PTA has blocked 2369 URLs and 183 mobile applications as of yet.

Earlier, PTA clarified that the ongoing internet slowdown across the country was mainly due to the failure of two of the seven international submarine cables connecting Pakistan to the outside world. The fault in the submarine cable is likely to be fixed by early October 2024.

Last week, the PTA told the Senate Standing Committee that Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) were overloading internet services in the country.

  • Pakistan’s inflation expected to drop to as low as 9% by September 2024: Finance Ministry

Pakistan’s inflation expected to drop to as low as 9% by September 2024: Finance Ministry

Pakistan’s headline inflation is expected to ease further in August 2024, settling between 9.5 per cent and 10.5 per cent, with a continued downward trend anticipated in the coming months, according to the Finance Division’s statement on Friday.

The Ministry of Finance, in its ‘Monthly Economic Update and Outlook’, highlighted that the inflation rate could drop even further to between 9 per cent and 10 per cent by September 2024, attributed to the stabilisation of key economic indicators.

July 2024 saw headline inflation at 11.1 per cent year-on-year, a decrease from 12.6 per cent in June 2024. This marks the lowest Consumer Price Index (CPI) figure since November 2021, when inflation was recorded at 11.5 per cent, as per data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The Finance Ministry’s report also pointed to positive trends in external indicators such as exports, imports, and workers’ remittances, which are on an upward trajectory.

A brokerage house noted that August’s inflation figure is expected to dip into single digits for the first time in nearly three years.

Looking ahead, the report projects that exports will range between $2.5 billion and $3.2 billion, imports between $4.5 billion and $5 billion, and remittances between $2.6 billion and $3.3 billion in August 2024.

The stable outlook for the external sector is contingent upon factors including a stable exchange rate, revived domestic economic activities, improved agricultural output, lower domestic and global commodity prices, and increased foreign demand.

In the industrial sector, the Ministry of Finance anticipates that the Large Scale Manufacturing (LSM) sector will maintain its positive growth trajectory in FY2025, driven by improved external demand, a stable exchange rate, declining inflation, and a more accommodating monetary policy.

  • Editorial: Ice-cold Power

    Editorial: Ice-cold Power

Last week, when the Karsaz incident came to light, waves of outrage swept the internet as people decried another senseless killing — of a father and his daughter on a motorbike — at the hands of an elite driver in a luxury car, identified as Natasha Danish.

People strongly condemned her nonchalant demeanour seen in videos circulating social media which were recorded moments after the accident.

Natasha also injured a few people that day (reported number varying between 2-5), one of whom is currently fighting for his life on a ventilator.

Surrounded by a large mob, people demanded that the police arrest her, but with Rangers encircling her, she was eventually escorted by private security guards.

Some claimed that Natasha was drunk at the time, while others suggested the influence of drugs.

Some demanded the death penalty while others expressed despair over the justice system, recalling all prior cases involving offenders belonging to influential backgrounds who got away with it — including premeditated murders.

The Current’s previous Editorial contented that since the Karsaz accident was not a premeditated murder, the public should wait for Natasha Danish’s medical report, including her psychological check-up, since, according to her lawyer, she had been on medical treatment for the past five years.

The Editorial also posed a question whether it was fair to jump to conclusions based on one’s appearance and means.

To sum it up: avoid reactionary conclusions on stereotypes and let the law take its course.

We were not wrong but Natasha certainly was.

The days that followed proved every stereotype right yet again.

Natasha Danish was deemed mentally healthy, her medical reports detected use of an illegal recreational drug called ice, she has a British driving licence, and above all, she is the wife of an influential businessman, Danish Iqbal, who is the chief executive officer of Gul Ahmed Energy Limited.

This might explain her unapologetic smirk after the accident — that too at the time when the dead bodies of 60-year-old Imran Arif and his 22-year-old daughter, Amna were lying on the road.

It also explains the consequential anger and despondency among the masses who know that they could be next, lying dead on the roadside, with no justice in the end, and their lives reduced to just another number that can be muffled with the exploitation of money.

It has also been reported that the injured man, who is battling for his life on a ventilator, has not been contacted by Natasha’s family, while the deceased victims’ family have not received a visit to express remorse or even offer condolences to the grieving family.

In fact, according to sources, Natasha’s family claims that her medical reports are doctored, persistently defending her while overlooking the loss of lives.

The recent developments also change the case legally as activist and lawyer Jibran Nasir explains, “Now Natasha will still be charged with manslaughter because of rash and negligent driving.” And while charges will be added for driving under the influence, it cannot be termed as murder since “the drugs were not consumed with the intention to run over somebody.”

“We may not have forgiven them in our hearts, but we have pardoned our son’s killers in the name of Allah. We cannot spend our entire lives in fear… we took the decision considering the circumstances.”

These were the words of the mother of 20-year-old Shahzeb Khan who was shot dead by Sharukh Jatoi, son of a feudal lord, in 2012. The case was taken to an anti-terrorism court in 2013, where Jatoi and other culprits were sentenced to death but in the end, Khan’s parents had to pardon them.

Now that another high-profile case has come to light in a country where justice can be forcefully bought instead of served, the final verdict will decide what so many now truly believe: is Pakistan really for the ice-cold rich?

  • Deadly Israeli raids in West Bank as Gaza genocide rages on

Deadly Israeli raids in West Bank as Gaza genocide rages on

Israel launched a large-scale operation Wednesday in the occupied West Bank, where the army said it killed Palestinian fighters, as the nearly 11-month-old Gaza genocide showed no signs of abating.

The military said its forces killed nine fighters. At the same time, the Palestinian Red Crescent reported ten deaths in the West Bank, where violence has surged since October 7.

The ongoing genocide has killed more than 40,000 people in Gaza, according to Gaza’s health ministry, and caused widespread destruction and displacement.

Early Wednesday, Israel launched coordinated raids across four northern West Bank cities — Jenin, Nablus, Tubas and Tulkarem — where the military has focused much of its recent operations against armed groups.

Columns of armoured vehicles entered two refugee camps, in Tulkarem and Tubas, as well as Jenin.

By midday, they were blocking entrances to the towns and camps, AFP photographers said, with soldiers firing at the camps from which gunfire and explosions were heard.

The Red Crescent said Israeli forces killed ten people and wounded 22 others in the raids.

The Israeli military said it killed three Palestinians in an air strike on Friday, the third day of a major operation in the occupied West Bank, claiming they were fighters of Hamas.

Witnesses told AFP the strike hit a car in the town of Zababdeh, southeast of the northern city of Jenin. An AFP journalist saw human remains being removed from the vehicle by paramedics.

The medical organisation’s West Bank chief, Younes al-Khatib, said ambulances came under Israel fire, and “one of our staffers was hit”.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas cut short a visit to Saudi Arabia and headed home to “follow up on the latest developments in light of the Israeli aggression”, Palestinian official media said.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II told visiting US lawmakers a Gaza truce was needed “to stop the cycle of violence in the region”, according to a royal statement.

Violence meanwhile raged in the Gaza Strip, where the civil defence agency reported at least 12 dead in Israeli strikes, and in Lebanon, where the Israeli military said it killed a “significant” Palestinian militant.

Punjab govt may refer Imran Khan’s cases to military court if necessary: Law Minister

Federal Minister for Law and Justice Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar has said that, if necessary, the Punjab government may decide to refer former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan’s cases to a military court.

Speaking to journalists at the Presidency, Tarar said, “The prosecution of May 9 cases is being done by the Punjab government and the provincial government will decide to refer the case to a military court.”

Responding to a journalist’s question regarding the constitutional amendment in parliament, he said that no amendment is under consideration. “Media should avoid speculations and show responsibility.”

He hinted that the upcoming joint sitting would consider a dozen bills that had been approved by the House of Parliament but not passed by the Senate.

Commenting on Chief Justice Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa’s retirement, he said, “It is not for me to decide whether the term of chief justice will be extended or not.”
