Master Changan Motors Limited has launched its electric vehicle (EV) brand in Pakistan, unveiling the Deepal L07 sedan and Deepal S07 SUV at an event held at Dolmen Mall Clifton in Karachi on Friday.

The company has opened pre-bookings for the vehicles, with prices starting at Rs15.5 million for the Deepal L07 and Rs16.5 million for the Deepal S07.

In a significant move, Master Changan Motors announced plans to invest $50 million across the entire EV value chain in Pakistan. This investment will include the development of EV charging infrastructure nationwide.

The company is also gearing up to begin completely knocked down (CKD) manufacturing of these vehicles within the next eight to 10 months.

Both the Deepal L07 and S07 models boast an impressive range of approximately 500 kilometres on a full charge, with charging times estimated to be around four hours.

“Deepal is a collaboration between Huawei, battery manufacturer CATL, and Changan,” said Master Changan CEO Danial Malik. “Over the next two years, we will be investing $50 million across the EV value chain and launching four new models in various segments.”

Speaking on the broader impact of electric vehicles, Shabiruddin, the company’s Director of Sales and Marketing, highlighted the potential benefits for Pakistan. “Currently, 59 per cent of Pakistan’s energy consumption is derived from fossil fuels. EVs can address three key issues: reducing pollution, lowering oil imports, and supporting climate change initiatives.”

Why did Jemima Khan block all emails from Pakistanis?

Social activist and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s ex-wife Jemima Khan has revealed that she had to block emails from Pakistan due to cyber-harassment.

Jemima posted a statement on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), blaming Imran Khan’s opponents for allegedly harassing her.

She wrote, “To friends in Pakistan legitimately trying to contact me. I have had to block all emails from Pakistan thanks to a cyber harassment operation, no doubt instigated by PTI’s desperate opponents. As Twitter/ X is banned in Pakistan by said desperate opponents, only those with VPNs will see this.”

“Pakistani politics… the gift that keeps giving, even after leaving the country 20 years ago.”

Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supporters have staged protests outside Jemima Goldsmith’s mother’s house in the preceding few years as PTI supporters staged daily protests outside Nawaz Sharif’s home.

PML-N supporters said it was retaliation for the PTI’s frequent protests outside Avenfield House, where Nawaz Sharif resided.

Jemima and Imran are parents to two sons, Sulaiman Isa Khan and Kasim Khan.

Justice still pending as Jaranwala incident marks one year

The Christian community in Jaranwala is still awaiting justice one year after the mob attack on their community. The government of Pakistan had promised to provide justice to the victims of the vandalized Christian community and to punish those involved in the violence, but their efforts appear to have been ineffective.

On August 16, 2023, two Christian residents were allegedly accused of blasphemy, a charge that was later disproved. Despite this, a large mob went on to vandalize 20 churches and around 80 Christian homes.

Amnesty International has reported that more than 40 percent of the affected Christian families are still awaiting government compensation.

Out of the 5,213 suspects, 380 were arrested, but 305 individuals were released on court orders.

Only 85 out of 146 families have received compensation so far, while 61 are still waiting for their due.

‘’We saw our houses in complete shambles as the building would soon collapse. To date, we have received no support. My husband is unemployed for a year because no one hires him (due to stigma). Many people received the promised compensation of 2 million rupees (US$7,200), but we did not receive it’’ said Jaranwala resident Christian Khalida Bano.

The apex court disapproved the police report on the Jaranwala incident in February 2024, stating that it lacked the required information.

One year later, trials against the culprits have yet to commence.

He pointed out that a household’s electricity bill was only 1,600 rupees under his administration, which has now increased to 18,000 rupees. He also noted that the dollar was valued at PKR 104 during his tenure, and that the cost of flour has now surged, affecting the cost of living.

Sharif mentioned that “Rs 14 per electricity unit will be credited to the August and September bills for consumption ranging from 0 to 500 units. The Punjab government has also introduced solar panel schemes, budgeting Rs 7,000 billion for the middle and lower-middle classes.”

He added, “I said goodbye to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during my time in office, but who approached the IMF afterward?”
