    Here are the key features of Pakistan’s first mental health app ‘Humraaz’

    Prime Minister’s strategic reforms initiative for the mental wellbeing of citizens, has launched a mobile/web based application named ‘Humraaz’ along with an integrated helpline -1166- in collaboration with Ministry of Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, World Health Organisation (WHO), National Information Technology Board (NITB) and Federal Directorate of Immunization.


    The application is available in both Google and Apple stores and the toll free helpline is also active.

    More than 140 psychologists/psychiatrists have registered in the initiative, out of which almost 60 plus are Psychiatric Resident Doctors and Counsellors. Appointments are booked based on availability/preferred time slots of the psychologists/psychiatrists.

    More than 30 government psychologists/psychiatrists are onboard for providing free consultation services to citizens having mental health concerns and thoughts of self-harming.

    Registration of Doctors (Psychologists/ Psychiatrists) will remain open – the profiles are reviewed and approved by the Panel of Experts of Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination.

    Here are the key features of the application:

    • Daily activities monitoring

    • 24/7 connection with professionals

    • International standard knowledge base

    • ChatBot (including self-assessment)

    • WhatsApp support appointment booking

    • Support groups of people for sharing of experiences.

    Salman Sufi, the Head of Prime Minister’s Strategic Reforms Unit, while talking exclusively to The Current said, “The government of Pakistan has recognized that trust in mental health professionals is a major barrier to seeking help, and has taken steps to address this issue. One such initiative is the government’s new mental health application for citizen’s wellbeing called “Humraaz.”


    Explaining that the application provides users with access to mental health professionals and resources, Sufi stressed that it aims to increase awareness about mental health issues and reduce stigma.

    He continued by saying that the government is working to ensure that mental health professionals are adequately trained and qualified to provide high-quality care, through setting rigorous standards for education, licensure, and accreditation, and providing ongoing training and professional development opportunities.


    “These efforts will help to increase trust in mental health professionals and encourage more people to seek the help they need.”


    While answering a question about the protection of user data Sufi said, “Ensuring the privacy and security of users’ data is a top priority for the government of Pakistan’s Humraaz mental health application. To achieve this, the government has implemented strict data protection policies and procedures, including using secure servers, encrypting data, and limiting access to user information to authorized personnel only.”

    In addition, the government has also appointed a dedicated team to monitor the application’s security and respond to any potential threats or breaches, Sufi elaborated. “These measures will help to safeguard the sensitive data of users and protect their privacy and wellbeing,” he said.

    Skipper Babar Azam, a true gentleman of the game, has once again made a touching gesture, tweeting his support for injured New Zealand captain, Kane Williamson.

    The Kiwi skipper is likely to miss the 50 overs World Cup to be held in India this year, after injuring the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee.

    The top-order batsman suffered the injury while fielding for the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League last Friday and returned to New Zealand soon after.

    Scans conducted on Tuesday confirmed that the injury would require surgery, making it unlikely he will be fit and available for selection for the tournament in October and November.

    In his tweet, Babar Azam wrote, “Bounce back stronger. Get well soon Kane Williamson.”

    The New Zealand Team is scheduled to tour Pakistan for an upcoming series in which they will play five T20 and five ODI matches in Pakistan. The series has a critical role in defining Pakistan team’s weakness and strengths before the upcoming World Cup in India.

  • Eid shopping: Markets in Lahore to remain open till 1am

    The Lahore High Court (LHC) has approved an extension of market hours for the provincial capital, Samaa has reported. The decision has been taken keeping in mind that Eid-ul-Fitr is now around the corner and shoppers will throng markets.

    Justice Shahid Karim was informed during the hearing of a petition to reduce smog in the city that most people go for shopping after Iftar.


    He was also informed that the business community would lose money if marketplaces weren’t allowed to stay open until late at night. After hearing the arguments, the court allowed extension of market timings in Lahore.

    Previously, the markets in Punjab’s capital were allowed to stay open till 10pm.

    Ishaq Dar cancels trip to the US for IMF and World Bank spring meetings

    Finance Minister, Ishaq Dar, has cancelled his scheduled trip to the United States next week to meet with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank. The reason cited for the pull-out is the “domestic state of affairs” in the country, as the deepening political uncertainty has made it difficult for Dar to attend the World Bank-IMF spring meetings that were supposed to take place in Washington from April 10 to 16.

    Dar’s original plan was to address concerns about the government’s continuity, future economic plans, and bridging the trust deficit with multilateral lenders. However, with his withdrawal, the Minister of Economic Affairs, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, will also not travel to the United States. The government will now be represented by Finance Secretary Hamed Yaqoob Sheikh and Economic Affairs Secretary Kazim Niaz at the WB-IMF spring meetings.

    The decision by the finance minister to withdraw may also result in the cancellation of meetings with his Saudi Arabian counterpart and the UK state minister for development. Dar was supposed to begin his trip on Monday with a meeting with Nathan Porter, the IMF’s Mission Chief in Pakistan, which was critical as Pakistan and the IMF were no longer actively negotiating following the government’s decision to announce petrol subsidies.

    Besides the IMF and WB, Dar was scheduled to meet with representatives from the three international credit rating agencies that had downgraded Pakistan. The finance ministry had also scheduled meetings with foreign commercial banks to persuade them to release loans.

    However, the Pakistan delegation may still get to meet with IMF’s deputy managing director Antoinette Sayeh, who follows Pakistan closely. It is uncertain whether a meeting with Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva would take place or not. Some reports have cited diplomatic protocol issues that prevent low-ranking dignitaries from meeting presidents/directors/leaders of various multilateral institutions and finance ministers from various countries.

    Regarding the controversial comment ‘When rape is inevitable, just enjoy it’, Gabol said his father had intended to say ‘Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional”

    “My father used inappropriate words but what he intended to say is a common teaching in psychology: “Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.” Just Google it….”

    Gabol went on to say that rape was not gender specific, and that his father was not talking about women:

    “All feminist sisters, is rape gender specific? First, you are wrong in assuming he was literally talking about rape. Second that he was talking about women. Both assumptions are your mistake not his!”

    Gabol defended the PPP politician by saying that his father was not a misogynist and cares for his daughters and granddaughters:

    “My father is not a misogynist. He does way more for his daughters than he does for his sons. I can’t forget his happiness at the birth of his granddaughter Hafsanur and the way he loves her more than anyone else in the world.”

    Gabol offered an explanation of his father’s controversial comments on YouTuber Nadir Ali’s channel, saying that those comments were only meant for the audience of that show.

    “I don’t agree with his sense of humor and you don’t have to either. Whatever he said on Nadir Ali’s show was meant for the audience of that show. Not for you and me!”

    Nabil Gabol faced intense backlash for a viral clip that trended on social media where the politician was talking on the YouTube channel ‘The Pakistan Experience’ with host Shehzad Ghias, stating ”When rape is imminent, just enjoy it’.

    Other clips of his interview with Nadir Ali also went viral where the politician was seen making sexual comments about the TikTok dancer Ayesha, and also boasting about kidnapping girls he liked.

    The PPP politician apologized for his remarks in an interview with AAJ news, saying that he regretted if his words had hurt women. But then he went on to blame PTI supporters for launching a social media campaign against him.

    However, on Wednesday, Gabol shared a screenshot from Time Magazine’s article on Imran Khan detailing his past scandals, and in the caption he wrote that had he also been as good looking as Khan, his words would not have gained this much scrutiny:

    Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) MNA Shazia Marri on Thursday criticised Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan in the National Assembly (NA), by calling the former prime minister a “narcissist”.

    Calling Khan a “Manchurian candidate”, Marri referred to Imran Khan’s previous statement and said that he was of the view that it was better to throw an atom bomb on Pakistan than let the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) rule the country.

    “He is the one who says ghabrana nahi hai [don’t worry] and turns up in courts covering his head with a protection box,” the head of Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) said. Marri further questioned whether anyone has ever seen any leader going to court wearing a protective box on their head. “He loves his face. He is obsessive about himself,” said Marri.

    “If you want to understand the living example of narcissism, it is Imran Ahmed Niazi,” she stated. “He loves himself… he loves everything about himself. He doesn’t love his children. He doesn’t love his family, and anybody for me who doesn’t love his family, children does not love anyone,” said the federal minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety.

    “He lies to everyone. He is misleading everyone. He keeps asking the youth to turn up and show up, first he should bring back his children. Why are you including our children in your fight. You should set an example,” said Marri.

    Reading our Khan’s statement in the NA, where the PTI chairman had said that if the government tires to sabotage the elections and you [PTI supporters] don’t come out in the streets, then even God will not forgive you, the federal minister said, “We don’t need morality lessons from him [Khan].”

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader (PTI) Ali Amin Gandapur has been arrested by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Police outside the Dera Ismael Khan (DI Khan) bench of the bench of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Thursday night.

    Gandapur was arrested in a case relating to an audio recording of him purportedly threatening authorities and the police against the possible arrest of party Chairman Imran Khan.

    In the audio, the Gandapur reportedly threatened to siege Islamabad if the former prime minister is arrested.

    Khan condemning the arrest, tweeted, “Today complete law of the jungle prevails in Pak[istan]. PDM & handlers have a one point agenda – that is to go after PTI workers & leadership.”

    “It was decided preemptively to arrest Ali Amin Gandapur despite bails. But they will still be decimated in the elections InshaAllah,” said Khan.

    Khan also shared a video in which Gandapur’s lawyer can be heard saying that the district police officer (DPO) told the sessions judge that they had to arrest the PTI leader “no matter what the cost”.

  • Restaurant bans customers from using smartphones while dining

    A Japanese ramen restaurant has announced that it will not allow customers to use their phones while dining.

    The restaurant’s owner, Kota Kai, put the ban in place last month after observing that patrons who were using their phones to view videos took the longest to begin eating.

    He claims that the thin, millimetre-wide noodles in his restaurant can rapidly turn mushy. According to Kai, even a quick film could cause a discernible impact in the ramen’s flavour.

    “It’s painful for me to see the ramen that I put my soul into making get ruined right before my eyes,” he said.

    Kai stated that he likes to deal with the clients directly as opposed to displaying posters about the phone restriction.

    “When the seats are full and I see people stopping eating while staring at their smartphones, I tell them (to stop),” he added.

    All-rounder Imad Wasim has thrown the gauntlet to team management, warning that he will not keep quiet if he is dropped again from Pakistan Cricket team without any reason.

    The player expressed anger on being ignored since the last one and a half years, stating that no communication has been held with him by the captain or Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) selection committee.

    “They have no answer as to why they dropped me even though I was performing,” the player reportedly said while talking to a local media channel.


    Imad also threatened to take action against every person involved in politics in the Pakistan cricket team.
    “I am at that stage of my career that I have to take steps, if they drop me without any reason again,” he added.

    The all-rounder revealed that he didn’t suffer any financial loss from being away from the national team.

    “I never suffered any financial loss while I was away from the team. In fact, I earned ten times more than what I would have earned while playing for Pakistan,” he said.

    “I am confident in my abilities. If I was the bowler who is said to be dependent on the conditions, then the T20 leagues of Australia and South Africa would have not signed me,” he concluded.

  • US Ambassador assures Pakistan of continued assistance for IMF bailout programme

    On Thursday, US Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome reassured Finance Minister Ishaq Dar that Washington would continue to assist Islamabad in unlocking a long-stalled International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout. This bailout is intended to help the liquidity-challenged country’s economy avoid imminent default. The assurance was given during a meeting between the finance minister and the ambassador in the federal capital.

    According to details, the envoy was briefed on the progress of the Washington-based lender’s programme. During the meeting, FinMin Dar requested the US ambassador’s assistance in unlocking the bailout programme. He also informed him about a $2 billion commitment from Saudi Arabia and ongoing talks with the United Arab Emirates for financing $1 billion. The minister expressed the need for additional resources and financing, to which Blome promised cooperation from the United States.

    According to an official statement from the Ministry of Finance, Dar briefed the envoy on the country’s economic outlook and the challenges faced by the nation. He also shared the government’s pragmatic policy decisions aimed at stabilising and growing the economy.

    The statement noted that Blome expressed confidence in the government’s policies and programmes, supporting them for the economic sustainability of the country and the socio-economic upliftment of the masses. He extended his support to promote bilateral economic, investment, and trade relations between both countries.

    The two sides discussed matters of common interest and showed an interest in enhancing the existing bilateral relations between both countries. They also talked about various economic avenues through which both countries can strengthen their ties. This meeting with Blome took place days after FinMin Dar met with UAE’s ambassador to Pakistan, Hamad Obaid Ibrahim Salim Al-Zaabi, to discuss economic relations.

    Since early February, Islamabad has been hosting an IMF mission to negotiate a series of policy measures aimed at securing $1.1 billion in funding for the cash-strapped economy, which is on the verge of collapse.

    The IMF has requested Pakistan to secure assurances on external financing from friendly countries and multilateral partners to fund its balance of payment gap for this fiscal year, ending in June. The funds are part of a $6.5 billion bailout package the IMF approved in 2019, which analysts say is critical for Pakistan to avert defaulting on external payment obligations.
