  • Unchecked overcharging: Shopkeepers set their own rates for essential items during Ramzan

At the start of Ramzan, prices of essential food items have witnessed an uncontrolled surge, with little intervention from the authorities concerned. Shopkeepers are selling essential food items at their desired rates instead of selling at government-announced rates.

A recent survey of markets in Peshawar reveals an alarming increase in prices of food items, which have continued to soar with each passing day in this holy month.

A vendor reported that the price of live chicken has surged to Rs350 per kg, while rice prices have increased by Rs70 per kg, reaching Rs335 per kg. Split chickpeas (chana dal) are now selling at Rs220 to Rs260 per kg, and the cost of beans has gone up by Rs60 per kg, with rates jumping from Rs281 to Rs339 per kg. According to a shopkeeper, the cost of spices has surged from Rs150 to Rs200 per kg and now stands at Rs600 per kg in the city.

Oil and ghee prices have also skyrocketed by Rs62 per kg. Vegetables and fruits have become unaffordable for many, with garlic being sold at Rs360 and ginseng at Rs620 per kg. Peas cost Rs200, Arvi Rs180, Zucchini Rs170, green capsicum Rs150, and tomato Rs120 per kg.

Fruits have also witnessed an upward trend in prices, with sweet oranges priced at Rs440 per dozen, oranges at Rs400 per dozen, banana at Rs300 per dozen, pomegranate Rs400, Iranian apple at Rs340 per kg, Kohati guava at Rs350, and strawberry costing Rs280 per kg.

The meat market has also been hit hard by price hikes, with beef now selling at Rs800 to Rs1,000 per kg from its previous price of Rs700 per kg before Ramzan, while mutton prices have increased from Rs1,400 to Rs1,600 per kg and now stand at Rs1,800 per kg.

Many shopkeepers have been charging prices of their own choosing, as district administration officials have not been able to check rates due to heavy rain and mud-stranded water. Butchers in the local market have expressed their dissatisfaction with the rates issued by the district administration, and have not faced any fines or raids from officials.

  • Pervaiz Elahi ko humnay aisay rakha hai jaisay handi mein masala, says Fawad Chaudhry

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry spoke disparagingly against party president Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi.

Fawad Chaudhry said that Elahi is not a public favourite, rather he is someone who does politics with the powerful.

Fawad further said that every party has a ‘handi’ [cooked dish] in which different spices are added, and he [Pervaiz Elahi] is also an important spice.

It is pertinent to mention here that the former Chief Minister of Punjab, Elahi, has recently parted ways with Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and joined PTI.

The rift between Elahi and Chaudhry seems to continue as in the past the party president had spoken in favour of Fawad’s arrest and later apologised for his statement.

Ishaq Dar assures govt is taking all possible measures to overcome economic challenges

The Finance Minister of Pakistan, Ishaq Dar, has stated that the federal government is working diligently to steer the country out of its current economic challenges and towards sustainable growth.

Speaking at an Iftar dinner hosted by the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) in honor of foreign diplomats, Dar urged friendly countries to fulfill their commitments to Pakistan to pave the way for a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the revival of the economy.

Dar highlighted that Pakistan was expected to become the world’s 18th-strongest economy in 2016 but is now facing serious economic challenges. He reassured attendees that Pakistan would not default and that the government is doing everything in its power to overcome the difficulties.

The President of ICC, Ahsan Zafar Bakhtawari, called on the government to ensure consistency in economic policies to boost investor confidence. He encouraged diplomats to invest in Pakistan, emphasizing the country’s large market with over 220 million consumers and opportunities in various sectors of its economy.

Bakhtawari expressed hope that a deal with the IMF would soon be concluded and urged the government to work towards ending the country’s reliance on foreign loans and becoming self-sufficient. He assured attendees that the business community would fully support the government in achieving this goal.

According to APP, the Iftar dinner was attended by diplomats from various countries, including Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Indonesia, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Malaysia, Poland, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and the Republic of Turkish Northern Cyprus, who commended the ICCI for hosting the event.

  • ‘Ya Imran ya hum’; Rana Sanaullah thinks Khan’s removal from politics is only solution to current crisis

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, in an interview with PNN News, turned his guns toward Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and blamed him for all the chaos and polarisation in the country.

The minister was of the view that till the time Khan is in politics, there will never be peace in the country.

He pointed out that Khan’s supporters considered the government their enemy and there is no solution to this problem.

Ya woh siyasat se manfi ho jaye gaye, ya hum, “(Either he will be subtracted from politics or us).

Sanaullah also warned the PTI chief that “if they push them back, they would be forced to retaliate and will not care about anything.”

Pakistan is in a deep constitutional and political crisis as the ruling coalition and PTI fight it out. Despite the government’s efforts in the past to talk to PTI, the former ruling party ruled out any possibility.

However recently, Khan has agreed to sit with rival political parties for “greater national consensus” on elections.

But no efforts from both side have been made so far.

  • Political arrests show our politicians have learnt nothing

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) social media head Azhar Mashwani went missing outside his house on Thursday when he was taking a cab to Zaman Park. His brother has lodged an FIR of his kidnapping. PTI has alleged that Azhar has been illegally abducted by the authorities. It is indeed quite alarming that three days have passed since he went missing from Lahore and yet there is no news about his whereabouts. Imran Khan has condemned the police in Punjab and Islamabad for “breaking all laws with impunity as they target PTI”. The recent targeting of PTI leaders and workers, including Fawad Chaudhry, Hassaan Niazi, and now Mashwani shows that our political parties have not learnt anything and will do the same when they come in power which they condemned when they were at the receiving end of the same treatment during the regime of their political opponents.

Two wrongs don’t make a right is something we often hear, but we don’t see this being professed in Pakistan. Witnessing the wrongs in the politics of Pakistan, it is safe to say that no one learns from past mistakes. For years, we have seen politics in our country. The people in power change, and their faces change, but their means and tactics to settle scores remain the same, and this vicious cycle continues. In the last few months, we have seen how the PTI leaders and workers have been arrested on frivolous charges just like workers and leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) or others when the PTI was in power. For years now, we have seen some very powerful sectors influencing decision-making both in politics and otherwise. The political arena is overshadowed by these mighty decision-makers and their idea of politics. Every time a politician is arrested to silence him or her, it just shows a flagrant disregard for the law of the land.

An arrest should only be made if, and only a crime has been committed or one is found guilty of any wrongdoing. Arrests on frivolous charges are not the answer to silence opinion. Democratic countries allow dissent. We have seen journalists and activists being arrested or picked up because of their views and opinions. The PDM government, which was a victim of such brutal policies in the past, has now made it abundantly clear that it will go to the same lengths to arrest Khan and his supporters. However, this vicious cycle must end. It is the responsibility of the political class to decide if they want to continue with settling scores and political victimisation or they want to put a stop to it. All politicians, be they in the government or the Opposition, need to unite on this point. Otherwise, such arrests and disappearances will continue. This culture must stop and change because political arrests will get us nowhere. A country facing multiple crises – from economic to political – needs stability. Not more chaos.

  • Feroze Khan sends public apology to fellow actors for leaking confidential information

Feroze Khan has issued a public apology to the ten celebrities whose personal information was leaked to the internet when he posted their personal phone numbers and home addresses on Twitter in a screenshot.

Khan had written in a statement: “As an actor, I know the importance of privacy and value it the most. I never intended that anyone’s peace be disturbed. If any one of my colleagues had to go through any inconvenience I’m deeply sorry for that.”

Actor Muneeb Butt and his wife, Aiman, along with her sister Minal, were among the celebrities whose private info was leaked, but yesterday Butt shared a picture of him and Khan together, and revealed that they had settled their differences and decided to drop the charges against the “Habs” actor.

    His statement read:

“..To give us pain and mental distress wasn’t FK’s intention it was a mistake I announce to drop all of the charges.”

Butt had previously filed a stalking report with the cyber crime department against Khan for leaking his and his family’s personal information.

“Whoever is suggesting this to you has thrown you into deep trouble my friend I feel bad for you now you will have to face all of this… Initially I thought it’s a stupid mistake waited for 24 hours but no apology or excuse proved that it was a deliberate move, I thought you were better than that seriously. Complaint registration/ verification process has been completed FIA cyber circle has intiated the inquiry. The process has started, you will have to taste your own medicine now wait for the call,” he had written.

Celebrities like Yasir Hussain had slammed Khan for being ‘stupid’ for first beating up his wife, and then leaking his number to the world.

Actor Sarwat Gilani had shared a screenshot on her Instagram page of the numerous phone calls she had received since her number was leaked by Khan, and publicly announced that she was suing him along with the other celebrities.

Gilani had written: “It is bizarre and despicable that private information, including phone numbers, of various famous individuals has been publicly shared on the absurd pretext of issuing legal notice to them by @ferozekhan Not only are such actions clearly illegal but also demonstrates the total lack of maturity to handle matters in a civilized way.”

  • Low salary, high inflation: FBR officer seeks PM’s permission to engage in corruption

A Grade 17 officer of the Inland Revenue Service (IRS) in Pakistan’s Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has allegedly written a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif requesting permission to start engaging in corrupt activities from April 1.

The officer claims that he has faced difficulties in meeting his expenses due to his low salary and the current high inflation in the country. In the letter, the officer says that he has been working with the FBR for the last four years and has never committed a single rupee of corruption, despite earning below the table money on several occasions.

However, he now feels left with no option but to look for illicit means to make ends meet, and seeks permission from the Prime Minister to engage in corruption. The officer also shared his salary, which is Rs122,922, and his general expenses, which amount to Rs110,500, not including petty expenses as a husband and father.

He promises not to cause huge losses to the national exchequer and take the minimum possible, as he is not a habitual corrupt person but has been forced by the circumstances and consequent disregard from his own Prime Minister.

  • Maryam Nawaz to unmask Khan’s handlers next week: report

Maryam Nawaz to unmask Khan’s handlers next week: report

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senior Vice President and chief organiser Maryam Nawaz will unveil the identities of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s local and international handlers next week.

According to media reports, Maryam Nawaz will address a rally in Kasur on Monday, where she will reveal the facts.

Earlier, addressing a PML-N workers’ convention in Rawalpindi, Maryam said that certain people were still supporting Khan as he did not appear before courts while hearings against him were being delayed.

She said she was not talking about honest judges but those who were part of the Lt General (retd) Faiz Hameed legacy.

Maryam said that while Khan could go to Rawalpindi for his party’s gathering with his injured leg, he “cannot appear before the court”.

While addressing the crowd during her party’s convention in Gujranwala, Maryam claimed that the “facilitators” still wanted to save a person [Imran Khan] who had “already drowned”.

“I want to ask the facilitators why they want to save a person because of whom the country’s fate has sunk. That person drowned himself, but why are you people bent on [losing] your jobs?” she said.
