Controversial new reality show Lazawal Ishq premieres amid backlash and buzz

The much-anticipated and arguably controversial Pakistani reality show Lazawal Ishq has officially premiered on YouTube.

Despite intense backlash and criticism on social media, the show has sparked widespread buzz for bringing a bold new format to Pakistani screens.

Set against the backdrop of a grand mansion with picturesque landscapes, a shining pool and a heavy dose of glitz and glam, Lazawaal Ishq has been shot at a scenic location Turkiye and blends elements of reality TV as well as matchmaking.

Aiming to explore emotional connections and relationship compatibility among young adults, the format includes several stages from glamorous first impressions and introductions to partner selection and dramatic interactions.

All of it is guided by the show’s host and popular actress Ayesha Omar, who appears in full red-carpet glam, donning a striking red gown for the first episode.

The episode features ten contestants: five girls — Jannat, Urooj, Laiba, Batool and Fatima — and five boys, namely Hamza, Sheeraz, Fahad, Maaz and Junaid. Pairings were made based on mutual preferences following the boys’ entrance.

Urooj, one of the participants, made it clear from the beginning that she’s looking for a real connection and potentially a life partner, echoing the show’s core concept.

Ayesha Omar, sharing a clip from the episode on Instagram, revealed that her mother appreciated the show’s unique premise. “Did my mum like the first episode? BILKULLLLLL!” she wrote, adding that her mother found it interesting and insightful to see how modern youth express themselves.

“The interaction was healthy, she said… she’s really looking forward to following the show.”

The episode marks Ayesha’s first interaction with the participants of Lazawaal Ishq, and she has expressed admiration for them. During the episode, Ayesha also admitted she’s open to marriage herself and encouraged participants to embrace the journey with fun and honesty, even if it includes “some mistakes”.

    However, not everyone is impressed.

From the moment the show’s promo dropped, Lazawaal Ishq has faced harsh criticism, with many calling it “un-Islamic” and a copy of Western dating shows. Hashtags like #BoycottLazawalIshq and #BoycottAyeshaOmar began trending soon after the premiere.

While some viewers have praised the fresh concept and the show’s attempt to reflect the emotional complexities of today’s youth.

The actress has already addressed the backlash, saying that it is not a “dating show”.

As a debate continues to rage online, one thing is clear, Lazawaal Ishq is already one of the most talked-about shows in the country. Evidently so, it has racked up over 200,000 views within 24 hours of the first episode dropping.

After sabotaging Asia Cup, India now plans to politicise Women’s World Cup

India has now set its sights on politicizing the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s World Cup after turning the Asia Cup into a political affair.

Indian journalist Boria Majumdar wrote on X (Formerly Twitter) that the pattern seen during the Asia Cup will continue in the Women’s World Cup.

“The India-Pakistan game in Colombo will not be another cricket match. It will be a continuation of the Asia Cup, and the only thing that changes is the gender. From men to women – that’s the only change. There will be no handshakes, lots of off-field drama and heightened stakes,” he wrote.

Pakistan and India are scheduled to meet on October 5 in the Women’s World Cup.

During the Asia Cup, Indian players refused to shake hands with Pakistani cricketers in any of the matches. After winning the final, the Indian captain also declined to receive the trophy from the Asian Cricket Council chairman.

Islamabad High Court allows child bride to live with husband

The Islamabad High Court has allowed a 15-year-old girl to live with her husband in a case concerning underage marriage.

Justice Muhammad Azam Khan issued a detailed verdict stating that although child marriage is not invalid under Sharia law, it is a criminal offense under the law.

The court recommended that the government improve NADRA’s system so that marriage certificates cannot be issued without age verification. It also said that marriage registrars must be bound not to register marriages involving anyone under 18 years of age.

The case involved Madiha Bibi, who had married of her own choice. In her statement to the court, she expressed her wish not to return to her parents and insisted she wanted to live with her husband. Even during her stay at the crisis center, she continued to express the same desire.

The judgment highlighted that, according to Sharia law, a marriage is valid with consent and after puberty.

However, the Islamabad Child Marriage Restraint Act 2025 makes marriage under the age of 18 a criminal act. While the marriage certificate listed the bride’s age as around 18, NADRA records confirmed that she was 15.

‘I felt really bad’: Syed Jibran regrets slamming Haris Rauf after Asia Cup defeat

Pakistani actor Syed Jibran has issued a public apology for harshly criticizing fast bowler Haris Rauf following Pakistan’s crushing defeat to India in the Asia Cup 2025 final.

Taking to Instagram, Jibran expressed remorse over his reaction, writing: “Guys… Honestly I felt really bad next morning when I realised that I used a harsh statement for one particular player only, when in fact whatever happened was not only an individual but a combined effort. Sorry for that. I think I’m better than that.”

After the final, Jibran had shared a post using strong language and emojis resembling cursing hand gestures aimed at Haris Rauf and the person who handed him the final over. His frustration came after Rauf’s expensive spell in the final match, where he conceded 50 runs in just 22 balls, making him the most costly bowler for Pakistan and a central figure in the team’s loss.

The disappointment wasn’t limited to Jibran. Several other Pakistani celebrities also took to social media to vent their anger. Actor and writer Yasir Hussain, referencing Rauf’s viral plane crash gesture from an earlier match, said, “Main ne pehlay hi kaha tha cricket pai dehan do. Ishary bazi se cricket match nahi jeety jaaty” (I had said before, focus on cricket. You can’t win matches with hand gestures).

Actress Amna Malik, in her Instagram story after the match, said: “One slap for Haris Rauf. Thanks for the damage. Haris Rauf, jahaz urao ab” (Haris Rauf, go fly planes now).

Actor Aijaz Aslam also sarcastically commented, “Thank you sir, itni izzat afzai ka shukria” (Thanks for this great humiliation).

Pakistan’s defeat in the high-stakes final against India has triggered widespread criticism from fans and celebrities alike, as expectations were high for a comeback in the tournament.

On the professional front, Syed Jibran is currently appearing in the drama Jinn Ki Shadi Unki Shadi, which has been receiving positive reviews for its unique storyline.

  • US govt has shut down

    US govt has shut down

The US government began shutting down after midnight Wednesday as lawmakers and President Donald Trump failed to break a budget impasse during acrimonious talks that hinged on Democratic demands for health care funding.

It is the first shutdown since the longest in history — lasting 35 days — almost seven years ago, and will stop work at multiple federal departments and agencies, affecting hundreds of thousands of government workers.

Trump blamed Democrats over the stalled talks and threatened to punish the party and its voters during the stoppage by targeting progressive priorities and forcing mass public sector job cuts.

“So we’d be laying off a lot of people that are going to be very affected. And they’re Democrats, they’re going to be Democrats,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

He said a “lot of good can come down from shutdowns,” and suggested he would use the pause to “get rid of a lot of things we didn’t want, and they’d be Democrat things.”

Government operations began grinding to a halt at 12:01 am (0401 GMT), after a frenetic but ultimately failed bid in the Senate to rubber-stamp a short-term funding resolution already approved by the House of Representatives.

Hopes of a compromise had been hanging by a thread since Monday, when a last-gasp meeting at the White House yielded no progress.

The gridlocked Congress regularly runs into deadlines to agree on spending plans, and the negotiations are invariably fraught. But Congress usually avoids them ending in shutdowns.

Democrats, in the minority in both chambers of Congress, have been seeking to flex their rare leverage over the federal government eight months into Trump’s barnstorming second presidency that has seen entire government agencies dismantled.

Trump’s threat of new job cuts added to anxieties in the federal workforce sparked by large-scale firings orchestrated by tycoon Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency earlier this year.

    – Health care under threat –

The 100-member Senate requires government funding bills to receive 60 votes — seven more than the Republicans control.

Republicans had proposed to extend current funding until late November, pending negotiations on a longer-term spending plan.

But Democrats wanted to see hundreds of billions of dollars in health care spending restored, particularly in the Obamacare health insurance program for low-income households, which the Trump administration is likely to eliminate.

Almost all Senate Democrats voted against a House-passed, seven-week stop-gap funding measure hours ahead of the midnight deadline.

It remains unclear how long the shutdown will last.

The federal government has shuttered 21 times since 1976, when Congress enacted the modern-day budget process.

Some stoppages have lasted only a few hours — not long enough to affect government operations.

The longest began on December 22, 2018 when Democrats and Trump found themselves at an impasse over $5.7 billion the president was demanding for a border wall during his first term.

Around 380,000 federal employees were furloughed and another 420,000 worked without pay.

Senators can move quickly when inclined by waiving the normal procedures that tend to hold up legislation.

The upper chamber was due back in session on Wednesday, but a House recess lasting all week means it will not be able to rubber stamp any quick deal agreed by the Senate.

The Senate will be out on Thursday for the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur, but will be back on Friday and possibly in session through the weekend.

The shutdown will not affect vital functions like the Postal Service, the military and welfare programs like Social Security and food stamps.

But up to 750,000 workers could be sent home each day and would not be paid until the shutdown was over, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

  • Petrol up by Rs4.07, diesel by Rs4.04 in latest revision

Petrol up by Rs4.07, diesel by Rs4.04 in latest revision

The federal administration has raised the costs of petrol and high-speed diesel, with the updated prices becoming effective from October 1.

As per a notification released by the Ministry of Finance, the price of petrol has been increased by Rs4.07 per litre. After this adjustment, petrol will now retail at Rs268.68 per litre, an increase from Rs264.61. High-speed diesel has seen a price hike of Rs4.04 per litre, bringing its cost to Rs276.81 from Rs272.77.

These new prices, in effect for the next 15 days, were implemented at fuel stations starting at midnight. The government evaluates petroleum prices every two weeks, with changes correlating to fluctuations in global oil prices and the exchange rate.

This marks the second adjustment in fuel prices within a month. On September 16, the government had announced new prices where the petrol rate remained the same while high-speed diesel costs were increased.

Petrol is predominantly used in motorcycles, cars, and rickshaws, which are vital modes of transport for the middle and lower-income populations. This increase is anticipated to impact daily commuting expenses, especially in urban locales where motorcycles and rickshaws play a significant role in mobility.

Conversely, high-speed diesel has far-reaching implications for the economy. It is widely utilized by the transport sector, powering buses, trucks, and railways. In rural regions, it is essential for operating agricultural machinery like tractors and tube wells.

A rise in diesel prices typically results in increased costs for vegetables and other food items, given the crucial role transportation is plays in supply chains

The Ministry of Finance noted that the government has revised the prices of petroleum products based on the recommendations of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and the relevant ministries.

Court issues non-bailable warrants for Imaan Mazari, spouse in tweets case

An additional district and sessions judge on Tuesday issued non-bailable arrest warrants for lawyer Imaan Mazari-Hazir and her husband Hadi Ali Chattha in a case pertaining to tweets posted on X (formerly Twitter) after they failed to appear before the court.

At the start of proceedings, Judge Mohammad Afzal Majoka indicted the duo but neither showed up for court.

Mazari-Hazir and Chattha had already registered their attendance but had traveled to Rawalpindi for another hearing, a junior attorney told the judge.

Four witnesses were named in a seven-page challan submitted by the prosecution during the session: Assistant Director Imran Haider, Sub-Inspector Shahroz Riaz, Wasim Khan, and Technical Assistant Anisur Rehman.

According to the challan, Mazari-Hazir had shared controversial tweets that Chattha later retweeted.

The judge instructed police to arrest and bring the two to court after becoming frustrated with their frequent absences and issued non-bailable arrest warrants.

The hearing was then adjourned until today (Wednesday).

Videos shared on social media showed the aircraft crashing and bursting into flames moments after impact.
