    Pakistani rupee reaches a new all-time low of Rs190 against the US dollar

    In the interbank market on May 11, the US dollar soared to an all-time high against the Pakistani rupee (PKR), reaching Rs190.10.

    In the morning. the local currency was trading at Rs189.89 to Rs190.04, with deals reported at Rs190.

    The dollar gained Rs1.44, surpassing the prior day’s finish of Rs188.66. The greenback touched an all-time high on May 11, when it surpassed the Rs189 level.

    It had gone down in the immediate aftermath of the April 11 change of government, but the adjustment soon ran out of steam, and the greenback is now flying again, hitting a new all-time high.

    Experts say the rupee is under pressure because of increased oil import bills and speculation about the Saudi package. Foreign reserves were also under strain due to delays in talks with the International Monetary Fund.

    Considering Pakistan’s scorching summer and rising petroleum prices, a claim has been made regarding how much fuel should be topped inside a vehicle.

    According to a viral image being attributed to Pakistan State Oil (PSO), motorists should not fill gasoline to the full capacity of the tank owing to rising temperatures since it may trigger an explosion in the tank. Drivers can fill half of their tank and leave the rest for air.

    Conversely, there has been no official word from the oil company in this regard; however, a similar image went viral years ago when PSO clarified that filling fuel tanks to their full capacity poses no harm to automobiles or passengers.

    The announcement came after a Whatsapp message went viral on the internet in 2018. In view of rising temperatures, the message falsely claimed that PSO had warned the public against filling gasoline tanks to full capacity.

    According to the statement from PSO, the auto-igniting temperature of gasoline is far higher than the peak summer temperatures in Pakistan. Filling a petrol tank to the maximum capacity poses no danger to the automobile or its occupants, and is considered fully safe and advantageous to the vehicle’s operation.

    Also, the idea that filling the vehicle’s gasoline tank to the full capacity will cause an explosion defies scientific logic.

    This is because the auto-ignition temperature for petrol is 495°F (257°C), which is the lowest temperature required to ignite a gas or vapour in air without the presence of a spark or flame. The highest recorded temperature on earth was 56.7°C (134°F), observed on July 10, 1913, at Greenland Ranch, Death Valley, California, USA.

    The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday dismissed the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) references seeking the disqualification of its dissident members of the National Assembly (NA).

    A three-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja reserved its decision after hearing arguments from all sides — the PTI and the lawyers of the dissident MNAs.

    The ECP stated that the declarations by the PTI against its lawmakers were not found to be in accordance with the Constitution.

    PTI’s lawyer Faisal Chaudhry requested the court to provide a copy of the reserved verdict, saying that he will appeal against it.

    While presenting his arguments, Noor Alam Khan’s lawyer Gohar Khan maintained that Article 63(A)1 does not apply to Noor.

    “The show-cause notice issued by the PTI secretary-general doesn’t have legal status. Therefore, Noor is still a PTI member,” Gohar argued, adding that the show-cause notice issued by the secretary-general was nothing more than a piece of paper as per the law. He maintained that as per the Supreme Court’s (SC) ruling, ECP’s full-court bench can give its verdict in the disqualification reference.

    The PTI filed references against 20 MNAs seeking their disqualification under Article 63-A of the Constitution ahead of the no-trust vote against then-premier Imran Khan.

    Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif and the senior leadership of the main government party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), have gone to London where they are due to meet with party supremo Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday.

     PM Shehbaz Sharif departed for London via a British Airways flight shortly after midnight. It is expected that he will remain in London for two to three days.

    The 10-member delegation consisting of PM Sharif, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Power Minister Khurram Dastagir, Finance Minister Miftah Ismail, and Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Attaullah Tarar, among others have gone to London.

    Their visit has received a lot of backlash from PML-N’s opponents to the general public. The timing of the PM and his top leadership’s visit to London is being questioned, with observers asking why such a trip is necessary when the country is in dire straits.

    Former PM Imran Khan said in a jalsa in Jehlum on Tuesday that the entire cabinet was going to meet a ‘corrupt and convicted’ person, that too on taxpayers’ money.

    “This entire cabinet is going to London on your [tax] money — they won’t spend their own money.”

    Later Twitter reacted to the news when Deputy Secretary-General PML-N Attaullah Tarar shared a picture of the delegation visiting London.

    A Pakistani-born United States (US) citizen— Imtiaz Rafiq— lost his cash worth $8,000 (1,514,256) while travelling to Houston from Jinnah International Airport, Karachi via Doha on Qatar Airways reports Geo News.

    As per the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), the money went missing from Rafiq’s backpack. He claimed that at Doha airport he checked his bag and realised the cash was gone.

    He has registered a complaint and asked for an investigation into the incident.

    According to Rafiq, he doubts that the money was stolen in Karachi as he had removed his backpack from his shoulders twice at the Karachi airport and found the cash in the backpack. He believes it likely happened during the flight from Karachi to Doha.

    Pakistan’s cement exports fell by 82.15 per cent in April 2022

    Owing to unpredictable economic and political conditions, cement sales remained weak last month and between July and April 2021-22 (10MFY22), according to All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA).

    The sector shipped 3.37 million tonnes of local cement in April 2022, down 17 per cent from 4.06 million tonnes in April 2021, while exports dropped 82.15 per cent from 877,163 tonnes in April 2021 to 156,613 tonnes in April 2022.

    As a result, overall cement sales including local and exports plummeted by 28.6 per cent in April 2022 to 3.52 million tonnes, down from 4.94 million tonnes in April 2021, as per APCMA data.

    North-based cement mills sold 2.8 million tonnes in domestic markets in April 2022, down 17 per cent from 3.3 million tonnes in April 2021. Exports from northern mills declined 75.22 per cent in April 2021, from 250,072 tonnes to 61,971 tonnes.

    According to data from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), banks granted Rs180 billion in housing loans in 10MFY22, with Rs57 billion disbursed over the same time. Housing loan applications of Rs409 billion had been received by banks.

    The political and economic instability of March had begun to deter investors in the construction industry, as seen by the APCMA’s domestic April sales figures.

    Moreover, high lending rates of 12.25 per cent effective April 7 and the risk of further rate hikes will impact construction activity, while consumers are already under pressure due to increased living costs, with the CPI for April at 13.37 per cent.

    Owing to record high prices for steel bars, cement, and other construction supplies, people are also cautious to make new investments in building new homes.

    The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has raised the sales tax rate on compressed natural gas (CNG) supplies to customers.

    On Tuesday, the FBR published S.R.O. 587(I)/2022 to replace S.R.O. 39(I)/2022, which was issued on January 8, 2022. It has amended the value of compressed natural gas (CNG) supply to consumers in order to charge sales tax from CNG stations.

    It has set the value of supply to CNG customers in order for gas generation and distribution businesses to charge sales tax from CNG stations.

    CNG rates

    The price of CNG in Region-I, which includes Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Potohar, has been raised from Rs134.57 per kg to Rs140 per kg (Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and Gujar Khan).

    Moreover, the cost of CNG has been raised from Rs128.11 per kg to Rs135 per kg in Region-II, which covers Sindh and Punjab except for the Potohar region.

    Israeli troops killed Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the occupied West Bank according to the Palestinian health ministry. She was wearing a press vest when she was killed.

    On Wednesday, she was injured by a live bullet while covering Israeli operations in Jenin, and she was brought to the hospital in critical condition. She was declared dead at the hospital.

    Palestinian journalist narrates the story of how she was killed. “At 6:30 am, a vehicle carrying a group of journalists arrived at the first roundabout in Jenin refugee camp. They were there to cover an Israeli raid on the camp, and a number of Israeli snipers were stationed on rooftops.”

    “Shireen Abu Akleh got out of the vehicle, wearing a helmet and a flak jacket clearly marked with PRESS. An Israeli sniper shot her, hitting just below her ear. She fell near a wall, and the shooting continued, hindering other journos from reaching her.”

    “Her colleague, Ali al-Samoudi, was also shot in the back. They were both transferred to Ibn Sina hospital in Jenin, and her death was announced there.”
