    ‘Seems like PM Khan was not assisted correctly over PECA Ordinance’: Justice Minallah

    During the hearing of a plea challenging the Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) PECA Ordinance, 2022, Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Athar Minallah reportedly issued a notice to the attorney-general of Pakistan and directed him to combine this petition with other petitions that are against PECA.

    Justice Minallah said that it seems like no one told the premier that there are laws for contempt other than PECA. He was referring to Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan’s address yesterday. “It seems like PM Khan was not assisted correctly over PECA Ordinance,” said Justice Minallah, adding that the law is used against critics here.

    The plea was filed by former president of Lahore High Court (LHC) Bar Maqsood Buttar. In the petition, it was argued that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) doesn’t have the authority to deal with a matter between two private parties.

    Previously, the IHC chief called the amendment “draconian in nature”. He said it is even worse than the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) law.

    Last month, President Arif Alvi passed an Ordinance amending PECA 2016, an attempt to make online “defamation” of authorities, including the military and judiciary, a criminal offence with harsh penalties.

    The high court adjourned the hearing till March 10.

    The Australian’s chief cricket writer, Peter Lalor, remarked on Tuesday that a 22 yard patch of the Rawalpindi pitch is “as dry as the local hotels”. He shared a picture of the pitch at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, where the first match of the Test series between Pakistan and Australia will be played on March 4.

    Historic series

    Team Australia arrived in Pakistan on Sunday for their first tour since 1998. They are scheduled to play three Tests, three ODIs and one T20I.

    Tickets

    The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced the availability of Pakistan-Australia Test series tickets online. The matches will be played in several cities of Pakistan— Rawalpindi (March 4-8), Karachi (March 10-12) and Lahore (March 21-25 ). According to the board, the ticket price for the general enclosure has been fixed at Rs 100, a first-class ticket at Rs 200, a premium ticket at Rs 350 and VIP Enclosure ticket at Rs 500.

    NCOC allows 100 per cent crowd capacity for Australia series

    The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) said on Tuesday that 100 per cent crowd capacity is allowed for the upcoming Australia series.

    “The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is allowed to conduct Pakistan vs Australia cricket matches scheduled from March 4 to April 5, 2022 at 100% of the stadium capacity,” said the NCOC.

    Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain is waiting for a response from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif.

    Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) delegation led by Sirajul Haq, visited the residence of the Chaudhrys of Gujrat in Lahore to see Hussain. PML-Q leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi was not present.

    During the meeting, Hussain said, “We asked Shehbaz Sharif some questions during a discussion on the proposed no-confidence movement, but the answers are still awaited,” reports Dawn.

    It was also reported that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the top leadership of PML-Q had a meeting, in which the Chaudhry brothers presented their Charter of Demands to former President Asif Ali Zardari.


    The PML-Q has asked the Opposition for the Chief Ministership in Punjab and stated that no compromise will be made on anything less than that.

    In case of getting Chief Ministership, the PML-Q has assured the success of in-house transformation in Punjab and Centre. The PML-Q has said that it will fully support the Opposition at the Centre.

    In February, Shehbaz went to Chaudhrys residence where the leaders of the two rival parties met each other for a formal political meeting after a gap of about 14 years.

    PM Khan is scheduled to meet the PML-Q leadership during his daylong visit to Lahore today.

    US Open champion Medvedev is the third Russian man after Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin, and 27th player overall, to rise to the top of the ATP rankings.

    “Of course I am happy to reach number one. It was my goal since I was young and especially my goal in the latest times,” said Medvedev.

    The 26-year-old Russian was guaranteed to move above Djokovic after the Serb’s quarter-final loss in Dubai. 

    Rafael Nadal rose one place to fourth after claiming his third title of the season and 91st of his career.

    Zahir Jaffer’s gardener appeals against his sentence, says he was employed at PM Secretariat

    Jan Mohammad, Zahir Jaffer’s gardener who was convicted in the Noor Mukadam murder case, has filed an appeal in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against his sentence. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the sessions court on four counts, which included “concealing design to commit the offence”.

    “My client was never named in the FIR, and he was included in the supplementary statement,” said Advocate Kamran Murtaza, the lawyer of Zahir’s gardener, while filing an application against the verdict in the high court.

    The statement further added that Jan Mohammad was employed at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat and worked part-time at Zahir’s house.

    “There is no evidence of my involvement. My punishment should be quashed,” the petition stated.

    A sessions court on Feburary 24 sentenced Zahir Jaffer to death for the murder of Noor Mukadam. The co-accused staff members at Zahir’s house who aided in keeping Noor in Zahir’s house, Iftikhar and Jameel, were sentenced to 10 years in jail. Additional Sessions Judge Ata Rabbani announced the verdict. All other accused were acquitted, including Zahir’s parents and TherapyWorks staff.

    A bride in India refused to marry her groom on her wedding day when she found that the groom is bald. Ajay Kumar, the groom had to return home without the bride.

    As per details, the bride discovered that the groom was wearing a wig to hide his baldness after the Barat reached the wedding venue. During the wedding ceremony, the bride spotted the groom repeatedly adjusting his traditional headpiece, on which the bride got suspicious. Later, the bride was informed that the groom was indeed bald and wore a wig on his head.

    The bride fainted and fell off the stage after learning that the groom was bald and refused to marry the groom. The family of the bride tried to convince her to get married but she did not change her decision.

    Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has contacted disgruntled Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen after the politician left Pakistan for the United Kingdom, said Foreign Minister (FM) Shah Mahmood Qureshi, reports Geo News.

    “The prime minister was informed that Jahangir Tareen was unwell,” Qureshi said.

    Qureshi said PM Khan had called the PTI leader to inquire about his health as he left for London for a medical check-up.

    It was earlier reported that Tareen spent a week in a private hospital in Lahore and would spend a week in London.

    PM Khan is scheduled to meet Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s (PML-Q) Chaudhry brothers during his daylong visit to Lahore today.

    Squid Game grabs three awards at International SAG awards

    Korean actors Lee Jung Jae and Jung Ho Yeon who starred in a popular Netflix show, Squid Game grabbed two awards at the International Screen Actor Guild (SAG). Lee Jung Jae has won the Outstanding Performance by a male actor in a drama series while Jung Ho Yeon has grabbed the award for a female actor in a drama series. Squid Game also succeeded in winning an Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series.

     

    This is the first time for any Korean actors and foreign drama to win the SAG awards.

    While accepting his award, Jung Jae said, “Oh my. Thank you so much. This is truly huge. I wrote something, but I don’t think I can read it. Thank you so much, SAG Awards. Thank you to the global audience for all of your love for ‘Squid Game,’ and thank you ‘Squid Game’ team!”

    Jung Ho Yeon got emotional when taking her first International award for Squid Game.

    In her acceptance speech, she said, “First of all, thank you so much. I have been watching all of you on a big screen as an audience, dreaming to become an actor myself one day. I just want to say thank you so much and I’m so honored to be here.” 

    She further added, “Thank you for making my dream (come true) and opening the door for me. Love you Squid Game team!” 

    They have tough competition in their respective categories. Many popular actors and dramas were nominated against them.

    Squid Game was released last year which gained attention from a global audience and remained to trend number one worldwide for several months.

    Now Director Hwang Dong Hyuk of Squid Game has also confirmed two more seasons of the web series.

    Pakistan intelligence agencies have successfully thwarted India’s bid to spoil the historic Australian tour to Pakistan as they tracked down ‘threatening messages’ generated from the Indian state of Gujarat, reported Samaa News.

    The messages were sent to left-arm spinner Ashton Agar’s wife on Instagram stating that “snipers will blow his head”.

    The  message read: “Hey Madeleine, I hope you are well. This is a warning for your husband Ashton Agar if he comes for a tour against Pakistan. He won’t come alive. Long live TTP (Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan) and Taliban.”

    “Your children will miss their father if he comes to Pakistan, our snipers will blow his head inshallah.”

    During the investigation, it was revealed that the person sending the messages was using VPN (virtual private network) to avoid getting traced. However, the agencies used their advanced system to track down the original source.

    As per Samaa News, the messages were sent from account ‘jyot.isharma391’, and it was being used by Mridul Tiwari, who lives in the Indian state of Gujarat.
    Interestingly, Tiwari is an environmental officer in the IMC limited.

    Last year in September, New Zealand abandoned their tour of Pakistan just hours before the first ODI at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium citing security concerns. Federal Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry later revealed that a threatening e-mail was sent to New Zealand from India.

    “I would just like to remind you that both Pakistan and New Zealand’s security agencies had probed and arrived at the conclusion that the threats issued on August 19, 21 and 24 were all fake,” he noted.

    Meanwhile, Cricket Asutralia (CA) has confirmed in a statement that a social media post was sent. The governing body says the threat is “not a risk”.
