Man on the run after raping 23-year-old cousin

A 23-year-old woman has accused her cousin of fleeing after raping her in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Karachi.

According to a private media outlet, the woman on Sunday lodged a complaint against the accused at the Defence Police Station.

Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said the woman visited Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for a medical examination on Saturday, which confirmed the assault.

The woman, a resident of Korangi, told police that she was on her way to the NADRA Mega Centre in DHA to get her computerised national identity card (CNIC) when her cousin, who was riding a motorbike, offered her a lift.

Instead, he took her to an empty house in DHA Phase-VII and raped her, the woman stated in the FIR.

She said the suspect brought her to JPMC when her condition worsened, calling her elder sister and fleeing.

DIG South Syed Asad Raza has issued orders for immediate arrest of the suspect while investigation is underway.

  • ‘Not a superstar’: Babrik Shah throws shade at Humayun Saeed in latest podcast

‘Not a superstar’: Babrik Shah throws shade at Humayun Saeed in latest podcast

Pakistani actor Babrik Shah has said that he does not believe Humayun Saeed is a superstar.

In a recent podcast appearance, Babrik shared his thoughts on Pakistani cinema and didn’t hold back from criticising some of its biggest names.

Taking a dig at The Legend of Maula Jatt lead actor Fawad Khan, he said the character lacked depth and intensity. “Fawad couldn’t deliver the role the way Maula Jatt’s character should’ve been portrayed. The essence and impact were missing,” he said.

He did praise Hamza Ali Abbasi for his performance in the film, but mocked Mahira Khan’s acting, stating that the rest of the cast appeared too “mummy-daddy”.

When asked about Humayun Saeed, he said, “Humayun made his debut in Inteha as a villain. Zeeshan Sikander was the lead, and the film was directed by Samina Peerzada. I watched it in the cinema when I was still young and not yet part of the industry. Later, he did No Paisa No Problem, which was a complete flop. Then he produced a movie himself, investing his own money. He took Ahsan Talish with him, cast several Indian actors, including Ahmed Ali Butt from Pakistan. The film was titled Aik Din Laut Ke Aaonga, but ironically, it never returned,” he quipped.

Babrik also mentioned Saeed’s other films such as Main Hoon Shahid Afridi, the Jawani Phir Nahi Ani series, the Punjab Nahi Jaungi series, and Love Guru. “He has done around 10 to 12 films. If you consider yourself a superstar after just a dozen movies, then Shaan should step down from his title, as he has done over 500 films.”

In response, the host asked whether it’s better to do 500 films with only a few hits or to have a shorter list of movies where each one is successful. Babrik replied, “If you calculate the success rate, Humayun’s hit ratio is only about 50 percent.”

He further criticised Saeed’s work, claiming his films were largely inspired by Indian cinema. “No one has truly worked to uplift Pakistani cinema or improve the industry. We used to have 500 cinemas in the country; now we’re down to just 29,” Babrik added.

He also said he himself has acted in over a hundred films and was now taking a break from the industry.

The interview comes shortly after Babrik criticised Imran Abbas during another media appearance. “He doesn’t even look like a hero. He has zero per cent filmy appeal,” he said, going on to rate Hamza Ali Abbasi a “seven out of ten” in terms of acting and calling Fawad Khan “overrated”.

Actress, singer Arifa Siddiqui’s house damaged in Lahore flooding

As floods in major rivers continue to wreak havoc across Punjab, water from Ravi has inundated several areas in and around Lahore, breaching safety walls and damaging properties.

With excess water from Ravi affecting residential areas, among the affected properties is the residence of renowned singer and actress Arifa Siddiqui, it has emerged.

Siddiqui took to social media to share a video of the damage to her home. The footage showed water having entered the house with furniture and belongings scattered and visibly damaged.

In the video, Siddiqui was seen alongside her husband as the couple attempted to clean their residence. Various parts of the house showed clear signs of water damage, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The actor’s housing society, however, wasn’t the only one affected as heavy rainfall and resulting rise in Ravi levels also caused severe flooding in other developments along the riverbank.

The District Education Authority (DEA) Lahore has stated that 45 schools will remain closed due to flooding, as many of them have turned into relief campuses. Schools in the worst flood-hit areas, such as Shahdara, Saggian, Maraka, Chung, Manga and Bund Road remain closed.

Residents in the affected areas are facing significant hardships and have appealed to the government for urgent assistance and relief efforts.

Earlier, the Punjab government had extended summer vacations due to intense heat, from mid August to August 31 due to bad weather.

According to a notification issued by Lahore Colleges Director Ehsan Mukhtar, about 20 colleges in the Lahore division, including six in the Lahore district, will remain closed for two days (September 1 and 2) due to the flood situation.

Global media outlets stage blackout to protest journalist killings in Gaza

Audiences around the world woke up on Monday to a powerful message on the front pages of newspapers and media websites.

“At the rate journalists are being killed in Gaza by the Israeli army, there will soon be no one left to keep you informed,” read a message on main pages of dailies and media websites as part of a protest organised by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and global advocacy group Avaaz to condemn the killing of journalists in Gaza.

For the first time in history, more than 250 media outlets across 70 countries, including Qatar, France, the UK, Germany, Palestine, South Korea, Spain and Italy, blacked out their front pages, homepages and broadcasts to send the message.

RSF stated that the protest aimed to demand protection for Palestinian journalists, free access for media in Gaza, and an end to what it called crimes against journalists by the Israeli army.

Television and radio stations will also air a joint statement whereas online media platforms will display blackout banners in solidarity.

According to RSF, Israel has killed 220 journalists in the past two years, with many more injured.

The Gaza Health Ministry reports that more than 63,000 Palestinians have died since the genocide began. The United Nations (UN) considers these figures reliable.

In a world obsessed with timelines and traditions, Pakistan’s beloved actor Maya Ali has drawn a bold line. She’s not marrying for anyone’s satisfaction but her own.

In a recent interview, Maya Ali made it clear that she won’t get married to please others.

“We shouldn’t get married just because someone is asking why we haven’t done so yet,” she said, adding that people often try to push women into marriage by saying they are aging or because a certain person might “keep them happy”.

She said she will get married the day she will find that connection with someone. The Mann Mayal actress also added she will get married but not because people are pushing her to.

Maya shared that after her father’s death, she and her mother have become the decision makers of the house. “It’s like there’s so much burden on my shoulders but I just tell my mother to relax, I say it’s okay we will handle it together, the way my father used to do it. • Newborn triplets die as floods cut off hospital access for Gujranwala woman

Newborn triplets die as floods cut off hospital access for Gujranwala woman

Three newborns have died on Sunday in Sohdra, a flood-affected village of Gujranwala, after their mother failed to reach a hospital as rising waters had cut off all access routes.

The woman, who was expecting triplets, went into labour but could not be taken to a medical facility as access routes had submerged underneath flood waters. She gave birth to her first child at home, but complications quickly developed.

The family arranged a boat to take her to a hospital in an effort to save her and the babies. But she gave birth to two more children as they were being taken in a car toward the boat.

Due to the lack of medical attention, all three infants – two daughters and a son – died. Overcome with grief, the mother said, “Roads opened for everyone else, but not for us.”

This is not the first time such a tragedy has been reported in Pakistan, where women have been unable to access hospitals in time.

In November 2022, a woman in Dir Upper District lost her newborn after giving birth on the way to a hospital, barely surviving herself.

Similarly, in August 2021, another woman delivered a baby girl inside an ambulance near the Hazara Motorway’s Shah Maqsood Interchange.
