England captain Joe Root fails to break Mohammad Yousuf’s Test record

England’s skipper Joe Root failed to break Pakistan’s veteran cricketer Mohammad Yousuf’s record of most runs in a calendar year, ending 2021 with the third-most Test runs in history.

His dismissal on day three of the third Test in Melbourne for 28 left him with 1,708 runs for the year, at an average of 61.00, behind only Mohammad Yousuf (1,788 in 2006) and West Indian legend Viv Richards (1,710 in 1976).

He moved past the likes of Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar to chalk up 1,600 runs at the second Test in Adelaide, and then edged South Africa’s Graeme Smith (1,656 in 2008) in Melbourne.

Root, however, had far more innings to compile his total — 29 to the 19 of both Yousuf and Richards.

“I obviously feel like I’m playing really nicely at the minute but I would obviously swap it all for Test match wins,” he said after England’s innings and 14 runs thrashing in Melbourne.

“Any player will tell you that there’s no better feeling in cricket than winning a Test match.”

“It’s great that I feel like my game is improving and evolving still as a player, even having played quite a lot of cricket, and I’m desperate to keep doing that,” he added.

The 31-year old cricketer is still searching for a first Ashes hundred in Australia. He has two more Tests to do it.

“I think I probably wanted it too much, I was too desperate and it had probably a negative impact on the way I played, I put too much pressure on myself,” he said ahead of the tour of his will to succeed in Australia.

The extent to which England have relied on Root this year is demonstrated by the numbers.

Second in the hierarchy is English opener Rory Burns, who scored 530 this year at 27.89, then Jonny Bairstow with 391 at 24.43.

New spy chief says no to the media

Director General (DG) Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lt Gen Nadeen Anjum has asked all authorities concerned not to release to the media his picture or video footage made during an official meeting, reports Ansar Abbasi for The News.

A minister on condition of anonymity revealed to the news outlet that the National Security Committee (NCC) met on Monday. The meeting was also attended by the DG ISI. However, the picture and video footage, released to the media by the government, showed almost everyone else except for the top spymaster of the country.

When asked for the reason, the minister said it’s a standing instruction for all concerned from the incumbent DG ISI not to release any of his pictures or video footage of any official meeting that he attends.

The minister added that for the same reason, ever since his appointment as the DG ISI, none of his picture or video footage has been released to the media. Lt-Gen (retd) Amjad Shoaib, while commenting on it, said the basic principle of intelligence services is to stay away from the media’s eye.

He said there have been violations of the principle in the past and a number of times the governments had been releasing to the media picture and video footage of the intelligence chiefs.

Gen Shoaib said the intelligence chiefs should not be shown on the media and TV screens. Generally, he explained, the spymasters are not recognised in the public all over the world for the same reason.

While another brother, Giang Quoc Co said, “Some days ago, we were under stress because of everyday practice. The weather is very cold and we practise in the morning till night.., Five years ago, we climbed 90 steps within 52 seconds…I feel wonderful,” the other brother can be heard saying in the video.”

The circus-performing brothers, Giang Quoc Co aged 37, and Giang Quoc Nghiep aged 32 also made the record earlier at the same venue in December 2016. At that time, they climbed 90 steps in 52 seconds.

This year, they achieved a record of 100 steps in only 53 seconds. The management set up 10 additional steps to perform the stunt, as the Cathedral has 90 steps.

In 2018, the world record set by the brothers in 2016 was reportedly broken by Peruvian acrobats Pablo Nonato Panduro and Joel Yaicate Saavedra with seven steps, 97.

According to the Guinness World Records website, the duo in December 2018 also had set another record to ascend and descend stairs in the shortest time while one of the brothers was blindfolded on Italy’s TV channel, TV8.
