‘Will personally oversee PTI’s LG election strategy’: PM Khan blames loss on wrong candidate selection in KP

Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan on Tuesday said his party “made mistakes” as he pinned the blame of the poor performance of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on “wrong candidate selection” for the first phase of local government (LG) elections held in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

PM Khan tweeted, “PTI made mistakes in 1st phase of KP LG elections & paid the price. Wrong candidate selection was a major cause.”

Making sure that the same mistake is not repeated, the premier added, “From now on I will personally be overseeing PTI’s LG election strategy in 2nd phase of KP LG elections & LG elections across Pak.”

Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly (NA) Shehbaz Sharif said that the people residing in the KP districts have rejected the ruling party.

“The ruling party’s defeat is an expression of people’s anger over the back-breaking inflation, crushing price hike & the meltdown of governance,” said Shehbaz Sharif in a tweet.

“It is the beginning of the end of an experiment that has cost the nation dearly.”

PM’s remarks come after the Opposition parties have had a combined lead over the ruling PTI in the local body elections.

  • Pope Francis denounces domestic violence as ‘almost Satanic’

The head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, condemned domestic violence against women as ‘almost Satanic’ during a programme on the national TV channel of Italy named TG5 network on Sunday evening. It is one of the strongest languages he has ever used on any issue.

He was speaking to panelists belonging to difficult backgrounds, including a survivor of domestic abuse. In the programme, issues such as domestic violence, poverty, and economic impact on citizens due to the pandemic were discussed.

The Pope expressed his serious concern about a very high number of women who faced abuse and were beaten in their homes.

He said, “The problem is that, for me, it is almost satanic because it is taking advantage of a person who cannot defend herself, who can only [try to] block the blows.”

He added, “It is humiliating. Very humiliating.”

He spoke these words to the survivor of domestic abuse, Giovanna, who shared her experience of escaping from a violent home with her four children.

He added encouraging words by saying that women who suffered abuse do not lose their dignity.

He told Giovanna, “I see dignity in you because if you didn’t have dignity, you wouldn’t be here.”

While addressing the survivor, he urged to keep hope alive even during the pandemic.

He added a supporting comment, “You are giving an example of resistance, a lesson of resistance to calamities,” he said. “You are coming out better than before.”

  • Zardari says ‘superpower’ in Pakistan needs a different ‘solution’

Zardari says ‘superpower’ in Pakistan needs a different ‘solution’

Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) co-chairman and former president Asif Ali Zardari, while addressing party workers at Zardari House, said that the ‘superpower’ was asking to share some formula but he told them that first this [government] should be sent packing and then talks could be held.

“I said it is the parliament [in 2018] that this hotchpotch sort of [government] could not last,” said Zardari without taking any names. He further added, “The conditions are such that now they are asking for help. We should make a way, devise a formula. I have told them there is no formula.”

“Your formulas are the reason that the country is in this state. The answer is pretty straightforward now. Send them packing and then talk with us,” said Zardari.

“The superpower said to me that they made me the most powerful civilian president. [So I said] I gave all the power to the parliament within three months,” said the former president.

He said that building Pakistan was easy but they could neither build the country nor listen and understand. But a time would come when they would have to listen, understand and follow our advice, he said without naming anyone.

“I just need your prayers to have more strength.” He said, “I would make them understand Bhuttoism and make them run.”

He said people would see that Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari would become prime minister. Zardari said that the PPP had been fighting and would keep fighting.

He also went on to add, “Now James has had a chequered past himself, he’s had a few businesses that haven’t taken off, but “He’s been very open about his own personal struggles, he got married this year, and as you can see, he has a great affection for animals who he says do a lot to help and assist people with mental health issues.”

Responding to the Twitter user, Aakash shared the stats for the most T20 runs scored in a calender year, which clearly showed that Rizwan was ahead of Kohli.

He further wrote: “People see what they want to see. It wasn’t a comparison with anyone. It’s a fact. Number of innings/matches irrelevant. It’s incredible that we can’t even appreciate an effort without caveats.”

It must be noted that the prolific batter also has the most runs — 1326 — in T20I cricket, this year, at a stunning average of 73.66 and strike-rate of 134.89. His runs tally includes 12 fifties, most by any player this year, and a hundred. He also stands at the top of the table in terms of sixes hit this year, with 42 against his name.

#AskShadab also became the top trend in Pakistan within an hour.

Fans had several questions about PSL, with a user seeking Khan’s opinion on whether Shaheen Shah Afridi could lead the Lahore Qalandars or not.

At this, Khan said that Shaheen can “absolutely” lead the Qalandars.

Abdul Wahab asked which franchise would Khan choose if given the choice. He responded that he would always pick Islamabad United unless they decide to release him.

Khan also revealed that his favourite captain for the seventh edition of the PSL would be former Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed who is playing for Quetta Gladiators.

A fan asked why did Khan, at times, adopts a rude attitude on the field, “especially with juniors, and in the PSL”.

At this, Khan said he “never” acted rudely and that juniors were his brothers.

As everyone at the national team calls Shadab “Shaddy”, a fan asked who started calling him that? He replied: Saifi Bhai (Sarfaraz).

Journalist Imran Siddique asked Khan why did he still call Sarfaraz “kaptaan” despite him not being in command anymore.

He also termed Rizwan as number one wicket-keeper.

Batsman Sharjeel Khan asked the all-rounder when was he planning to tie the knot. In response, Shadab said: “Sharjeel bhai Aap he baat kaar lain ab number send karta houn” [I am sending you the number Sharjeel bhai. Speak on my behalf]”.

  • Muslim boy beaten to death in India

A 22-year-old young Muslim named Rahul Khan was beaten to death by his friends over the alleged stealing of a mobile in the Indian state of Haryana at Palwal district on Tuesday, December 14. His family claimed that the video of an incident shows the act of hate crime.

Police have arrested all three friends Aakash (alias DIljale), Vishal and Kalua who will remain in custody. They all belong to the same village, Rasoolpur.

According to the victim’s father, Chiddi Khan, his son went to a wedding ceremony in Hoshangabad with his friends. His father received a phone call at 6 pm from the accused who informed him that his son was seriously injured in a road accident.

However, the district superintendent of police (DSP) Yashpal Khatana said that on returning to Rasoolpur, an argument took place when they were drinking that Khan was hiding Kalua’s mobile phone. When his friends allegedly found the mobile from Khan’s possession, they started beating him with rods and other weapons.

Khan was taken to canal afterwards to be assaulted further and where the purported video was shot by his friend, Aakash.

While talking to Indian media, his brother-in-law, Akram said that he went to Kalua’s residence after being reported about his accident initially, the victim was barely conscious. His head was crushed and he had injuries on his arms and legs. He was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Kalua accompanied his family along to a hospital.

His father initially filed a complaint stating that his son was killed after an unknown vehicle hit his son’s motorcycle at Nangal road.

On the next morning on December 15, the family received the video of Khan’s physical assault, which was also uploaded on social media. It showed him being beaten and in which voices can be heard saying Rahul was a Muslim and they (suspects) were Hindus that made them believe that Khan was murdered because of communal hate.

Rahul Khan’s wife, Saina claimed that on December 15, before his last breath in the hospital, he told her that he was beaten up with rods by some people including Kalua.

His sister, Razia also alleged that that the accused was demanding a large amount of money from her brother as their father retired from the Indian Railways in April this year.

Initially, police registered a first information report (FIR) under an Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304 (a) (death caused by negligence) but after the video surfaced and the assessment of the post-mortem revealed all of the victim’s injuries, they added charges of murder and arrested Khan’s friends.

The police have confiscated the mobile phone on which the video was recorded. During the interrogation, it was revealed that Aakash shot the clip of physical assault and he also uploaded it on social media to supposedly save himself from an incident. He allegedly said in the video not to beat the victim.

The video has been sent to the forensic lab for analysis. The relevant charges would be added if the communal hate was found.
