  • Two separate guerilla attacks kill 18 in Colombia

Two separate guerilla attacks kill 18 in Colombia

Two separate attacks blamed on dissident guerilla groups killed 18 people and wounded dozens in Colombia on Thursday, one involving a truck bomb while a drone downed a police helicopter in the other, deepening the country’s most serious security crisis in decades.

The latest deadly attacks, which struck the southwestern city of Cali and a coca farm in the north, pose fresh challenges to Colombia’s fragile peace processes ahead of elections next year.

Around 3 pm local time (2000 GMT), a truck loaded with explosives was detonated on a busy street near a military aviation school in Cali, killing six people and wounding more than 60, officials said.

“There was a thunderous sound of something exploding near the air base,” 65-year-old eyewitness Hector Fabio Bolanos told AFP.

“There were so many injured people,” he said.

Eyewitness Alexis Atizabal, 40, said “there were fatalities among people passing by on the avenue.”

Images shared on social media showed vehicles on fire, destroyed homes, injured people on the ground and people fleeing in panic amid the sound of alarms and screams.

Cali mayor Alejandro Eder ordered martial law for the country’s third most populous city. He also announced a temporary ban on large trucks entering the city and called on the public to report information about the incident for a US$10,000 reward.

Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez blamed the attack on the Central General Staff (EMC) guerrilla group, led by warlord Ivan Mordisco.

The group broke away from the defunct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) after it agreed to lay down arms for a historic peace deal in 2016.

    – 12 police officers killed –

Earlier Thursday in the northeast of the country, guerrillas from another breakaway FARC group attacked police overseeing the eradication of coca crops, which are used to produce cocaine.

Armed with rifles and a drone, the fighters shot down the helicopter and killed 12 police officers, wounding three more, Antioquia departmental governor Andres Julian Rendon told a press conference.

Defense Minister Sanchez initially blamed the attack on the Clan del Golfo, Colombia’s biggest drug cartel.

But he later said the attack was the work of a faction that split from EMC led by a commander under the alias of Calarca.

Many of Colombia’s armed groups — once based on leftist or right-wing ideologies — are now de facto drug cartels, funding themselves through the lucrative cocaine trade.

The two dissident groups blamed for Thursday’s attacks both rejected the peace agreement signed in 2016 with the bulk of FARC after a six-decade-long insurgency. They are also at odds with each other.

Left-wing guerrillas, right-wing paramilitaries and murderous cartels still control pockets of Colombia, but the country has enjoyed years of relative calm.

But there has been a recent surge in violence that experts say demonstrates armed groups are regaining strength and the ability to carry out coordinated, complex attacks.

Former top security officials have voiced concern that the Colombian intelligence services have lost a step and are no longer able to detect and foil plots.

    – ‘Most painful days’ –

Colombians are fearful of a return to the violence of the 1980s and 1990s, when cartel attacks, guerrilla violence and political assassinations were commonplace.

The latest attacks heaped pressure on the government of President Gustavo Petro, whose conciliatory approach to armed groups has been blamed for the uptick in violence.

In response to Thursday’s attacks, Petro said dissident guerrillas loyal to Mordisco, another group known as the “Segunda Marquetalia” and the country’s largest cartel the Clan del Golfo would be declared “terrorist organizations.”

Petro is constitutionally barred from running again in next year’s elections.

Earlier this month, Colombia buried 39-year-old conservative presidential candidate Miguel Uribe, who was shot in June while campaigning in the capital Bogota.

“Our country is going through the darkest, saddest, and most painful days,” his widow Maria Claudia Tarazona told the funeral service.

Uribe’s own mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was killed in a botched 1991 police operation to free her from cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar’s Medellin cartel.

  • PTA says mobile, data services restored in Quetta on court’s order

PTA says mobile, data services restored in Quetta on court’s order

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Thursday stated that mobile and data services have been restored in Quetta and other cities in compliance with the orders of the provincial high court.

The development came as the high court resumed hearing a case regarding the suspension of mobile and internet services in the province.

On August 6, citing security concerns, authorities had suspended mobile internet services in several Balochistan’s districts, including the capital Quetta, with the blackout scheduled to last until August 31.

Last week, the Balochistan Consumer Civil Society filed a petition, contending that the disruption severely affected online learning, disrupted business activities, and created communication hurdles for travellers.

At the outset of today’s hearing, PTA authorities apprised the court that mobile and data services had been restored in some cities. “It may take two hours to fully restore mobile and internet services (across the province),” PTA authorities told the court.

When the petitioner, Balochistan’s Consumer Civil Society chairman Khair Muhammad, told the court that mobile phone internet service was not fully restored in Quetta, the court remarked: “Concerned officials will be summoned again on August 25 if mobile and internet services are not restored.”

  • ‘Skipper wasn’t talented but…’; Wasim Akram opens up about Imran Khan

‘Skipper wasn’t talented but…’; Wasim Akram opens up about Imran Khan

Pakistan cricket legend, the “Sultan of Swing” Wasim Akram, has spoken about former World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan.

Speaking on the Stick To Cricket podcast, hosted by Michael Vaughan, Sir Alastair Cook, David Lloyd, and Phil Tufnell, the 59-year-old described Imran Khan as hardworking but not naturally talented.

When asked what it was like to play under Imran, Wasim said, “I think whatever I did as a cricketer, off the field, on the field, credit goes to him. He used to give us a lot of confidence. He led from the front. He had a belief in his own ability. He was a hardworking cricketer. I mean, he was the best captain I played under. He used to give confidence to every one of us.”

Wasim further added that Imran was not the most naturally gifted cricketer, but his determination to succeed set him apart.

“People used to say I’m very naturally talented. Skipper (Imran Khan) wasn’t talented. He worked hard. Remember, he changed his bowling action. From 76, exactly. Changing even a little bit of action can take months; it might not happen. But he did change his action. He was so determined,” he said.

The former fast bowler also revealed that Imran Khan demanded full commitment on the field and did not tolerate laziness.

“At times, he used to shout at us because if you were lazy, fair enough. He was tough, but he was tough on the field. You give your 100%. If you don’t do well, he was okay with it,” Akram concluded.

Wasim Akram made his Pakistan debut in 1984 under Imran Khan’s captaincy.

Imran took the young left-arm seamer under his wing, helping him develop into one of the best bowlers in world cricket. The duo later played a pivotal role in Pakistan’s historic 1992 World Cup triumph.

  • Indians lose it over Pakistan’s biplomacy spree; claim army chief is head of American crypto company

Indians lose it over Pakistan’s biplomacy spree; claim army chief is head of American crypto company

Pakistan has made great strides since May 2025 to establish itself as a digital hub, drawing it ever closer to the pro-crypto Trump Administration. However, its improving ties with the United States, the global economic powerhouse, have sparked unfounded criticism from media figures in neighbouring India.

An Indian media outlet has claimed that Pakistan’s improving ties with the US are linked to its dealings with World Liberty Financial (WLF), a crypto venture associated with President Donald Trump’s family. The anchor falsely labelled WLF as “a completely illegal business” and baselessly alleged that it is “used mostly by drug traffickers.”

Moreover, the anchor in question further claimed that Field Marshal Asim Munir was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of WLF. Meanwhile, Indian media outlets have long alleged that the military meddles in the affairs of the Pakistan Crypto Council (PCC).

It merits a mention that this is not the first time Indian media has undermined Pakistan’s crypto progress by portraying it as an attempt to strengthen ties with the US. Recent reports claimed that Pakistan’s dealings with WLF and Fr8Tech on virtual assets were efforts to “curry favour with political players in Washington”.

Moreover, the Indian media has been pushing a political narrative, baselessly suggesting that Pakistan’s military will soon take control of the country’s digital asset landscape. Some reports went as far as alleging that virtual asset bodies would be dominated by military officials, drawing a misleading parallel with the 36 active-duty officers who “reportedly” oversee the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC).

However, it merits a mention that the PCC, Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, and Pakistan Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (PVARA) were all created by formal democratic channels, with no evidence of military involvement.

Apart from working with Pakistan on virtual asset initiatives, the US recently lowered tariffs on imports from Pakistan to a reasonable 19 percent – one of the lowest US tariffs on exports in South Asia. Meanwhile, India faces a steep 50 percent tariff.
