JUI-F lawmaker accused of marrying minor girl

Chitral police have started an investigation after reports of a marriage between Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Maulana Salahuddin Ayyubi, who is a National Assembly lawmaker hailing from Balochistan, and a 14-year-old girl from Chitral, reported Jang.

On Feb 18, a local organisation, Anjuman Dawat-o-Azeemat, requested police to conduct an inquiry into whether the girl had attained the marriageable age of 18, and if not, take action against all those responsible under the Prevention of Child Marriage Act, reported Dawn.

Chitral police station SHO Inspector Sajjad Ahmed said that the family of the girl is not in town yet, but the police will start an investigation into these reports once they come back to Chitral.

According to reports, the girl is a student of a government school in Jughoor and her date of birth is recorded as Oct 28, 2006. And if the record is accurate, then the girl is considered a minor in Pakistan and such marriages are criminalised.

According to police, the father of the girl denied the reports of the marriage and even signed an affidavit to this effect.

  • By-polls: Maryam shares videos of vote theft as PML-N claims victory on three seats

By-polls: Maryam shares videos of vote theft as PML-N claims victory on three seats

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz shared videos on her Twitter handle, accusing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers of stealing ballot papers during the Wazirabad (PP-51) by-polls.

The PML-N vice president alleged that her party supporters nabbed the ruling party workers trying to sneak out with ballot boxes. Maryam shared a number of videos seemingly showing unidentified persons carrying white bags and surrounded by enraged PML-N workers.

“PTI people caught red-handed stealing bags full of votes by PMLN MPA Adil Chatta and Ataa Tarar. [The] seal was also broken. Police was a part of the plan to steal votes for PTI,” the vice president wrote on her handle.

According to PML-N’s Ataa Tarar, the presiding officer stationed at the Virtual University polling station was allegedly casting fake votes. Tarar claimed the votes that were cast in the men’s section of the polling station were 600, but upon examination by the polling agent of the PML-N, 852 votes were found.

In another video shared by the PML-N leader, a man could be seen sitting in a car with a white bag which is described by Maryam a bag of votes. “He was caught red-handed. PML-N workers did not allow him to escape. Rangers also present,” Maryam said in another tweet.

Subsequently, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) took notice of the videos shared by the PML-N leader and summoned a report from the returning officer. The ECP later withheld the results over irregularities in polling.

By-elections were held in four constituencies on Friday: two in Punjab and two in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to the unofficial results, PML-N emerged victorious in Daska, Gujranwala and Nowshera (PK-63), whereas a PTI candidate was leading on Kurram (NA-45) seat.

According to preliminary results obtained from 213 polling stations, PML-N candidate Nosheen Iftikhar was in the lead with 61,571 votes in NA-75 Sialkot, while the PTI candidate Ali Asjad Khan had obtained 55,872 votes. Maryam Nawaz claimed victory on the Daska seat. In Daska, at least two people –PML-N and PTI supporters — were killed as a result of firing on a polling station.

In Wazirabad, PML-N’s Begum Talat Shaukat bagged 53,903 votes, while PTI’s Chaudhry Yousuf stood runner-up with 48,484 votes. Wazirabad’s PP-51 fell vacant after PML-N MPA Shaukat Manzoor Cheema died on June 3, 2020.

In Nowshera, PML-N candidate Ikhtiar Wali, backed by the opposition alliance Pakistan Democratic Movement, won the by-election by securing 21,112 votes against his rival candidate Mian Umer Kakakhel of the PTI, who got 17,023 votes.

PTI’s Fakharuzzaman Bangash clinched victory after receiving 16,911 votes, while independent candidate Haji Syed Jamal secured 15,560 votes.

  • Human Rights Watch accuses India of targeting minorities

Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Friday accused the Indian government of adopting laws and policies that “systematically discriminate against Muslims and stigmatise critics of the government.”

HRW’s report came days ahead Feb 23, which marks the first anniversary of the violence in New Delhi, where 53 people were killed, 40 of them were Muslims. The violence came after protests started against India’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) passed in 2019 that excludes Muslims.

The law granted citizenship to at least six minorities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who immigrated to India until Dec. 31, 2014.

“Instead of conducting a credible and impartial investigation, including into allegations that [ruling Bharatiya Janata Party] BJP leaders incited violence and police officials were complicit in attacks, the authorities have targeted activists and protest organisers,” the report said.

“The authorities have lately responded to another mass protest, this time by farmers, by vilifying minority Sikh protesters and opening investigations into their alleged affiliation with separatist groups,” it added.

When Anadolu Agency contacted BJP spokesperson Syed Shahnawaz Hussain to comment on the HRW Report 2021, he declined to respond by saying, “I have not seen the report.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP “has not only failed to protect Muslims and other minorities from attacks but is providing political patronage and cover for bigotry,” said HRW South Asia Director Meenakshi Ganguly.

Although violence in New Delhi followed peaceful protests by Indians of all faiths, BJP leaders “attempted to discredit protesters, particularly Muslims, by accusing them of conspiring against national interests.”

Also mentioning the protests of farmers against new farm laws in November, HRW accused the BJP leaders, their supporters on social media, and the pro-government media, of blaming the Sikhs, another religious minority.

“Following violent clashes on January 26 between the police and protesting farmers who broke through police barricades to enter Delhi, the authorities filed baseless criminal cases against journalists, ordered the internet to be shut down at multiple sites, and ordered Twitter to block nearly 1,200 accounts, including of journalists and news organisations, some of which Twitter later restored,” it said.

Since Modi came to power in 2014, various legislative and other actions have been taken, legitimizing discrimination against religious minorities and enabling violent Hindu nationalism, HRW said.

“These actions violate domestic law and India’s obligations under international human rights law that prohibits discrimination based on race, ethnicity, or religion, and require the governments to provide residents with equal protection of the law,” HRW said.

“The Indian government is also obligated to protect religious and other minority populations, and to fully and fairly prosecute those responsible for discrimination and violence against them,” it added.

    RIGHTS GROUPS ENDORSE REPORT:

Kavita Krishnan, an activist, and secretary of the All India Progressive Women’s Association said in response to the HRW Report, “It is an acknowledgment of what is happening in India. I have no doubt that the government is targeting minorities and speaking the language of bigotry every day.”

“There are a number of such cases that we see on a daily basis where Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians are targeted,” she said, blaming Modi’s BJP government.

“In the last six years, it has increased exponentially under Modi government. It is very much state-sponsored and the latest one is the interfaith marriage which has made a marriage of Hindu woman with Muslim and Christian very difficult,” she said.

  • ‘Fault in submarine cable’: PTA plans to fix bad internet with additional bandwidth

‘Fault in submarine cable’: PTA plans to fix bad internet with additional bandwidth

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced on Friday that internet service providers are increasing the bandwidth to fix the internet issues across the country.

Internet users across Pakistan are facing connectivity issues following technical faults in the international submarine cable near Egypt.

According to the details, Trans World Associates (TWA) has communicated the service degradation on the international connectivity towards Europe on the SMW5 cable system due to a subsea fault in the cable system. PTA issued a statement in this regard which reads: “Work is underway through international counterparts in Egypt to rectify the fault at the earliest.”

Meanwhile, the PTA assured that it was monitoring the situation and will continue to update internet users in Pakistan. The telecommunication authority, however, didn’t mention any timeline regarding the restoration of services.

According to the reports, “While the work to remove the fault is continuing, the internet service providers (ISPs) are being shifted to the spare capacity maintained by the company,” said a TWA senior official quoted by a news media outlet.

TWA network caters for around 40% of internet traffic in Pakistan.
