Coach Reveals Williamson’s Desire to Keep Playing for New Zealand

New Zealand cricket coach Rob Walter has confirmed that Kane Williamson still wants to play for NZ, despite stepping back from a central contract and missing the upcoming Zimbabwe tour.

Williamson, 34, recently turned down a central deal with New Zealand Cricket. This move allows him to choose when he plays and take on more franchise opportunities. He will skip the two-Test series against Zimbabwe in July and August to captain London Spirit in The Hundred in England.

Coach Walter spoke to the New Zealand Herald, saying he had a long and positive talk with Williamson. The conversation covered the future of New Zealand cricket and Williamson’s role moving forward.

“It was great to catch up and get his view on the Black Caps,” said Walter. “He’s been a key part of their success and still sees himself playing international cricket.”

The coach made it clear that Williamson still wants to play for NZ. He added that fans likely won’t have to wait long to see him back in national colors.

New Zealand’s upcoming schedule includes a T20 series against Australia and two limited-overs series against England in October. The team will then host West Indies later this year. Williamson stepped down as white-ball captain after the 2024 T20 World Cup but featured in the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.

Walter believes Williamson can continue to adapt across formats. “He’s a generational talent. Quality players like him always find a way,” he said.

While his exact role in the short formats remains uncertain, the door remains wide open. “Williamson still wants to play for NZ, says coach,” and his return to the squad could happen sooner than expected.

‘For just one house?’: Senators grill NHA over Lahore-Raiwind motorway plan

Officials from the National Highway Authority (NHA) have stated that plans are being drafted to build a 16-kilometre motorway from Lahore to Raiwind.

During a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Planning, headed by Chairperson Quratulain Marri, on Friday, a row erupted after NHA officials briefed the committee that a 16-kilometre long motorway from Lahore to Raiwind is being planned. Raiwind is home to the residence of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. His daughter Maryam Nawaz is the current Chief Minister of Punjab.

In response, Marri reportedly said that it apparently seems NHA is building a motorway for just one house. “Will the provincial government fund this motorway or will NHA,” she asked. In response, NHA officials stated that for now, they are only conducting a land survey.

The Chairperson stressed that no more motorways will be built in Punjab, adding that, primarily, incomplete motorways in other provinces must be finished first.

She expressed surprise that such a motorway is not being built in Karachi, which has a port: “Why aren’t you building a motorway there?”

NHA officials replied that that there are two motorways in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) while Punjab has seven motorways.

Committee member Senator Manzoor Ahmed Kakar chimed in, asking, “Out of 14 motorways, doesn’t Balochistan deserve even one? Can’t you allocate even a single motorway for Balochistan?”

Meanwhile, the committee demanded a detailed briefing on all of Balochistan’s roads in the next meeting. The chairperson recommended that no more motorways be constructed in Punjab, emphasising that other provinces, especially Balochistan, should also have motorways.

Dog saves over 60 people from deadly landslide in India

A dog’s frantic barking in the middle of the night saved the lives of over 60 people in a remote Himalayan village before a massive landslide destroyed their homes on June 30, 2025.

Residents of Siyathi village in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district shared that their five-month-old dog began barking around 1am as heavy rainfall triggered a slope collapse that swept away at least a dozen houses.

“I woke up from the barking,” a villager named Narendra told an Indian media outlet. “As I went to him, I saw a big crack in the wall of the house, and water had started to enter. I ran downstairs with the dog and woke everyone up.”

Narendra ran door to door alerting neighbours, giving them just enough time to escape before their homes were buried under mud and debris. The landslide levelled the area, leaving only a few houses standing.

Villagers credited the dog, who was adopted just weeks ago, for warning them in time to flee to safety. The 67 people, belonging to about 20 families, are now staying at the Naina Devi temple, according to local reports. The Himachal Pradesh government has given each household ₹10,000 (£100) in immediate relief.

This tragedy is part of the widespread destruction caused by the intense monsoon across the region. Since June 20, at least 78 people have died in Himachal Pradesh in rain-related incidents such as cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides, according to the state disaster management authority.

Mandi is among the worst-hit districts, recording 19 cloudbursts and 16 landslides in just over two weeks. More than 150 roads remain blocked and hundreds of homes have been damaged or destroyed.

  • Caster Semenya Wins Partial Victory in Human Rights Court Case

Caster Semenya Wins Partial Victory in Human Rights Court Case

Caster Semenya has received a partial win in her long legal battle over sex eligibility rules. The European Court of Human Rights ruled on Thursday that she did not get a fair hearing in a previous case in Switzerland.

The decision came from the court’s highest panel of 17 judges. In a 15–2 vote, they agreed that the Swiss Supreme Court had failed to properly review her appeal. The case involved earlier decisions supporting World Athletics, the sport’s governing body.

Caster Semenya had taken her case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The ruling from that court upheld rules that blocked her from competing in women’s races unless she reduced her natural testosterone levels. Semenya refused, calling it unfair and harmful.

Now, the case will return to the Swiss federal court in Lausanne. Many other sports bodies around the world are watching the outcome, as they consider their own eligibility rules for female athletes.

The European court did not decide whether Semenya faced discrimination. Four judges disagreed with that part of the ruling. Still, the court ordered Switzerland to pay her €80,000 (about $94,000) in legal costs.

Semenya, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was present in court when the ruling was announced. She later posted a photo online, raising three fists to show her continued fight for justice.

This ruling does not change the rules of World Athletics. Those rules have already forced Caster Semenya to stop racing in the 800 meters, an event where she once dominated the world stage.

The court’s main criticism was that Swiss judges did not carry out a proper review of the original case. Since sports bodies require athletes to appeal through specific courts, the review process must be strict and fair.

World Athletics and the Court of Arbitration for Sport have not yet responded to the ruling.

  • Autopsy reveals Humaira Asghar died nearly 10 months ago, fingers ‘reduced to bone’

Autopsy reveals Humaira Asghar died nearly 10 months ago, fingers ‘reduced to bone’

Initial post-mortem findings of the autopsy conducted on the remains of Humaira Asghar Ali in Karachi’s upscale Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Phase VI, have revealed that the actress died eight to 10 months ago.

Police Surgeon Summaiya Syed prepared the autopsy report, stating in it that the body was severely decomposed and unrecognisable at the time of recovery.

Medico-legal findings revealed that the body was in an “advanced stage of decomposition”, facial muscles were completely deteriorated, and fingers and nails were “reduced to bone”.

Other details that have been noted in the findings include that her bones began to “disintegrate upon touch”, while brain matter was completely decomposed via autolysis. Internal organs had turned into a “black-coloured mass” and while her bones were not fractured, the cartilage in the joints was not present.

Humaira’s head and spine remained intact, but no spinal cord was detected. Brown-coloured insects were present, especially in the hair, but no maggots were found.

Additionally, the report stated that due to the extent of the decomposition, it is impossible to determine the exact cause of death.

However, Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) profiling and toxicology tests are underway and are expected to provide further insight. Hair strands, clothes and blood samples had been sent for chemical analysis.

Humaira’s remains were found when law enforcement personnel visited her apartment around 3:15pm on Tuesday to enforce a court-ordered eviction. No response from inside prompted the police to force open the door, discovering her body lying on the floor.

She had reportedly been living alone in the flat for the past seven years.

After the body was discovered, speculations erupted on social media that the deceased’s family refused to claim Humaira’s body.

Speaking to journalists last night, her brother Naveed said that his parents were “distressed” due to the recent death of another close relative.

He stated that for the last three days, the family was in contact with Chhipa and the police, including Station House Officer (SHO) Farooq Ahmed Sanjrani of the Gizri Police, adding, “according to the guidelines, we were [eventually] going to receive the body and perform the rites.”

Moreover, Naveed said that Humaira was an “independent person” who wouldn’t visit the family for extended periods.

“She moved to Karachi and had been living here for the last seven years … she would visit home after several months or even a year at times … She didn’t contact us for a year, although our mother had reached out to her asking about her whereabouts.”

“Her mobile phone had been switched off for the last six months, so our mother could not contact Humaira. We could not trace her number either,” he concluded.
