Grok goes off the rails after update turns it into white-supremacist

Grok, an AI chatbot incorporated into X (formerly Twitter), issued a series of contentious replies on Tuesday, citing Adolf Hitler, Jewish last names, and antisemitic conspiracy theories.

Grok, created by Elon Musk’s xAI, was requested by a user to identify a woman in a screenshot from a TikTok video, prompting an exchange between the two.

Grok identified the woman as Cindy Steinberg and claimed she had celebrated the deaths of white children during recent floods in Texas. The chatbot connected her name to a larger trend, asserting that individuals with Ashkenazi Jewish surnames frequently appear in what it termed “radical left activism.” Screenshots of the interaction began circulating on X before some of the content was removed.

When asked to suggest a 20th-century figure who might respond to the posts, Grok expressed admiration for Hitler. In subsequent replies, it reinforced this viewpoint, stating: “Hitler would’ve called it out and crushed it.” One user who expressed disapproval was met with the response: “Pass the mustache—truth hurts more than floods.”

In another unrelated reply, Grok made a joke about Jewish physical characteristics. It also referred to itself as “MechaHitler,” alluding to a video game character. Later, Grok asserted that its earlier comments were meant as sarcasm, labelling the post regarding Hitler as an “epic sarcasm fail.” In reaction to the backlash, Grok stated it was ridiculing a troll and deleted the post because “context matters.”

This incident followed a substantial software update Musk announced on July 4, claiming that Grok had been “significantly” enhanced. Code updates indicated that the chatbot was directed to emphasise politically incorrect claims and consider media narratives as biased.

Previously, Musk mentioned that Grok had been trained on “far too much garbage” and urged users to submit “divisive facts” that were politically incorrect yet factual. Grok has faced criticism before for invoking the “white genocide” conspiracy theory in response to unrelated prompts, such as inquiries about athletes’ salaries.

A screenshot of a TikTok interaction quoted the woman saying, “White kids are just future fascists.” The X account in question has since been deactivated, and the quote remains unverified. Grok’s responses have been compared to Microsoft’s Tay bot, which was removed in 2016 after producing offensive content online.

xAI has not replied to requests for a statement. A message posted on Grok’s account indicated that the company is working to filter hate speech and that Grok 4 will be unveiled during an upcoming livestream.

  • FBR launches AI system to streamline Customs, boost tax collection

FBR launches AI system to streamline Customs, boost tax collection

Pakistan’s Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has launched an AI-driven Customs Clearance and Risk Management System (RMS), signalling a move towards automation in customs processes for imports and exports. This system aims to enhance efficiency, minimise manual involvement, and bolster tax revenue collection.

The initiative was showcased during a review meeting led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. According to officials, the RMS utilises artificial intelligence and automated bots to assess the cost and classification of goods entering and exiting the nation.

Preliminary outcomes from the system’s testing phase indicated substantial improvements. The number of Goods Declarations marked for taxation surged by 83 percent. Clearances through the green channel, which facilitates the rapid movement of low-risk goods, increased by 2.5 times. Overall performance saw an enhancement of over 92 percent, as reported by officials.

The system is being framed as a critical advancement toward automation and data-driven evaluations in customs operations. Officials mentioned that the RMS could alleviate pressure on customs personnel and expedite the clearance process, thereby simplifying operations for businesses.

The meeting also addressed the application of video analytics within the manufacturing sector. Authorities are considering its potential for monitoring production rates and automating tax collection. Initial tests indicated a remarkable 98 percent efficiency rate for this technology.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described these digital changes as a fundamental aspect of the government’s economic strategy. He remarked that the implementation of AI would contribute to a more transparent tax system and diminish opportunities for undue influence. He further instructed officials to maintain the system’s integration across various departments.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, the FBR chairman, and high-ranking government officials were present at the meeting.

In a different briefing, the FBR and the Intelligence Bureau released an update on their efforts against tax evasion and hoarding. The report highlighted that collaborative operations had resulted in the recovery of Rs178 billion.

Of this total, Rs69 billion was sourced from company mergers and unpaid dues from telecom companies. The Intelligence Bureau also conducted 515 raids across various sectors including sugar, beverages, edible oil, animal feed, tobacco, and cement. These actions yielded an additional Rs10.5 billion in tax revenues.

  • Trump holds fresh talks with Netanyahu to end Gaza ‘tragedy’

Trump holds fresh talks with Netanyahu to end Gaza ‘tragedy’

Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu met for the second time in 24 hours Tuesday as the US president intensified the pressure on the Israeli prime minister to reach a deal to end the “tragedy” of the genocide in Gaza.

Netanyahu’s return to the White House for fresh talks came after Qatari mediators warned it would take time to seal an elusive ceasefire between Israeli and Hamas at talks in Doha.

“It’s a tragedy, and he wants to get it solved, and I want to get it solved, and I think the other side wants to,” Trump told reporters as he announced that Netanyahu was coming back.

Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff said he hoped for an agreement within days.

“We are hopeful that by end of this week we will have an agreement that will bring us into a 60-day ceasefire,” Witkoff said.

The deal would include the return of 10 live hostages held by Palestinian militant groups since Hamas’s October 2023 attack on Israel, and nine dead hostages, Witkoff added.

The Israeli leader, who had dinner with Trump on Monday evening, arrived back at the White House for talks that were being held without any media access.

Asked earlier as he met US House speaker Mike Johnson if a ceasefire announcement was imminent, Netanyahu replied: “We’re certainly working on it.”

    – ‘Need time’ –

Trump has kept up strong US support for Israel, especially over the recent Iran-Israel war, but has also been stepping up the pressure to end what he calls the “hell” in Gaza.

Qatar however said Tuesday more time was needed for negotiations for a breakthrough between Israel and Hamas, as indirect negotiations extended into a third day in Doha.

“I don’t think that I can give any timeline at the moment, but I can say right now that we will need time for this,” Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari said.

Qatar, a mediator along with the United States and Egypt, said the meetings in Doha were focused on a framework for the talks, while a Palestinian official close to the negotiations said no breakthrough had been achieved so far.

Hostilities meanwhile continued on the ground.

Gaza’s civil defence reported 29 killed in Israeli strikes on Tuesday, including three children.

Five Israeli soldiers were killed in combat in northern Gaza — one of the deadliest days this year for Israeli forces in the Palestinian territory.

Netanyahu described the soldiers’ deaths as a “difficult morning.” They were reportedly killed by improvised explosive devices near Beit Hanun in northern Gaza.

And Lebanon said three people were killed Tuesday in a strike near Tripoli that the Israeli military said targeted a Hamas soldier, the first in the area since a November ceasefire with Hezbollah.

    – ‘Torn to shreds’ –

Trump has been trying to seize on the momentum from the recent ceasefire between Iran and Israel, which was precipitated by US airstrikes on Tehran’s nuclear program.

France’s foreign intelligence chief said Tuesday that the program has been “very, very delayed” by US and Israeli strikes, wading into a contentious debate over just how hard it was hit.

Israel and Hamas began the latest round of negotiations on Sunday, with representatives seated in separate rooms within the same building.

An Israeli official accompanying Netanyahu to Washington said the proposal under discussion was “80-90 percent of what Israel wanted.”

But far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir opposed negotiations with Hamas, saying that “there is no need to negotiate with those who murder our fighters; they must be torn to shreds.”

The genocide has created dire humanitarian conditions for Gaza’s more than two million people.

The genocide against Palestinians in Gaza worsened after October 7 2023 as Israel has killed at least 57,575 people in Gaza, also mostly civilians.

Four dead in fire at Peshawar’s Kochi Bazaar

A tragic house fire near Kochi Bazaar in Peshawar has claimed the lives of four people, including a woman, as confirmed by Rescue 1122 officials.

According to spokesperson Bilal Ahmad Faizi, the blaze erupted in a residential building next to the market, triggering an immediate response from fire and rescue teams.

Six people were reportedly trapped inside when the fire broke out.

Rescuers were able to pull three people out from the burning structure at first.

Two firefighters passed out from exhaustion and smoke inhalation during the operation.

Everyone who was saved, including the firefighters who suffered injuries, was sent right away to local hospitals to receive treatment.

Despite the best efforts of the staff, four persons could not be saved. The victims were identified as Riaz, Shehnaz, Rafiq, and his wife.

Over 40 rescue personnel, supported by six fire engines, took part in the intense firefighting operation, which aimed not only to control the blaze but also to stop it from spreading to adjacent shops and residences.

Efforts were hampered by the building’s location in a congested area with narrow alleyways, making access difficult for rescue vehicles.

However, after hours of firefighting, officials confirmed that the flames had been brought under control and cooling operations were underway.

  • Taylor Fritz credits girlfriend for success as he reaches Wimbledon semifinal

Taylor Fritz credits girlfriend for success as he reaches Wimbledon semifinal

Taylor Fritz has credited his girlfriend, influencer Morgan Riddle, for playing a key role in his journey to new heights in tennis, as he reached his first-ever Wimbledon semifinal on Tuesday.

Fritz beat Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4) to set up a tough semifinal clash with two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. After the match, Fritz opened up about the motivational note he wrote to himself after losing at Wimbledon four years ago.

“That note was never supposed to be public,” Fritz said with a smile. The note, which Riddle shared on social media, read: “Nobody in the whole world is underachieving harder than you.” It was a harsh reminder for him to push himself harder.

Fritz said he does not hold it against Riddle for sharing it. In fact, he praised her for helping him stay focused and rise to No. 5 in the world.

“There’s been a pretty constant results and ranking rise since we’ve been together,” Fritz said. “I think I would have to say she’s been a big help to me just kind of keeping me focused, having someone who cares and just pushes you to just do better and do the right things, be healthier.

“Almost like kind of just mother me in a way,” he added, laughing, “with like, the diet and going to sleep on time.”

He quickly admitted with a grin, “Yeah, that maybe wasn’t the best choice of words.”

This is the first time Fritz has reached the last four at Wimbledon. He has already won two grass-court titles this season, in Stuttgart and Eastbourne.

“Grass is very much so an equalizer. It can be an equalizer. So trust in how I’m playing,” he said. “I truly know the way that I played the first two sets today, there’s not much any opponent on the other side can do.”

Fritz will face defending Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals.

  • Dangerously high temperatures cause deadly floods in parts of Punjab, Hunza

Dangerously high temperatures cause deadly floods in parts of Punjab, Hunza

Gilgit-Baltistan’s record-breaking temperatures are accelerating glacier melt, triggering devastating floods in several regions, cutting off communities, and damaging infrastructure.

Glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) have destroyed homes, washed away roads, and put locals in dangerous situations.

The Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA) reports that temperatures in the region have reached dangerously high levels over the past week.

According to GBDMA Director General Zakir Hussain, the situation is “unusual” this year. He noted that rivers and streams, especially in Diamer and Gilgit, are at a higher risk of flooding owing to the rapid glacier melt.

Last week, Chilas recorded a maximum temperature of 48.5°C, the highest since July 17, 1997, when it reached 47.7°C. In Bunji, the temperature jumped to 46.1°C, the highest since July 1971.

A flash flood hit the Gandlu-Muladad Padi area in Chilas on Tuesday, leading to the closure of the Karakoram Highway (KKH). Meanwhile, the Supultar nullah blocked access to Hoper Valley, and flooding in the Nagar area damaged the road to Nagar Khas Valley.

The Chipurson Valley road in Upper Hunza was also rendered inaccessible due to overflowing rivers. In Ghanche, river erosion severely damaged Siachen Road in the Thugs and Bangilongba areas.

Makeshift bridges were swept away by water in the Botogah nullah in Chilas, cutting off nearby villages. Both the Hamari and Supultar nullahs inflicted severe damage on roads, waterways, agricultural land, and public and private infrastructure in Nagar.

Water and power supplies were disrupted in multiple areas.

In the Hamorkhay area of Nagar Khas, ongoing erosion submerged trees and farmland, putting more than a dozen homes at risk.

Similar destruction was reported in Chilas and Chipurson, where floods swept through homes and public property.

A fresh GLOF event linked to the Shishper Glacier in Hunza’s Hassanabad nullah has again put the KKH and surrounding settlements at risk. As a precaution, four homes were evacuated.

The local administration has issued a public warning against travel to affected areas due to the ongoing threat of flooding and land erosion.

    Relief and rescue operations:

Authorities have mobilised machinery to clear blocked routes.  “Our first responsibility is to save the lives of people,” said GBDMA chief Zakir Hussain, adding that displaced families are being relocated to safer areas.

Additionally, efforts are being made to repair critical irrigation systems that many residents depend on for farming.

GBDMA has requested monitoring equipment from the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) to investigate glacier behaviour and determine the reasons for the increased rate of melting.

The chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan has asked district officials and relevant departments to remain vigilant and respond quickly in order to prevent further losses.

    Punjab’s urban flooding:

While GB grapples with glacier-driven flooding, urban Punjab is battling a different crisis: waterlogged streets, blocked roads, and choked drainage following heavy monsoon rains.

In Lahore, downpours left roads like Jail Road, Qurtaba Chowk, Liberty Chowk, and Lakshmi Chowk submerged.

Jail Road received 46mm of rain while Qurtaba Chowk saw 43mm, according to the Met Office, with the city averaging 40mm overall.

Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) teams rushed in with pumps to manage flooding in low-lying areas. WASA Managing Director Ghufran Ahmad called for non-stop drainage operations, instructing teams to protect vulnerable neighbourhoods with full force.

The province’s highest rainfall was 48 mm in Sheikhupura, while the city’s highest rainfall was 52 mm in Nishtar Town, Lahore.

Following the intense downpour, the provincial government placed all disaster response agencies on high alert.

    PDMA Meeting:

In Sialkot, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) held an emergency meeting, with DG Irfan Ali Kathia warning that the province could see 40–60% above-normal rainfall in the coming days.

Riverbank areas near Head Marala are especially vulnerable, where the water flow has already reached 70,000 cusecs.

Essential supplies have been sent to relief camps, and in anticipation of further rains, electrical poles are being reinforced.

Special teams have also been dispatched to rural zones to safeguard livestock.

Commissioner Naveed Haider Shirazi of the Gujranwala Division issued an order for the evacuation of structurally weak buildings, emphasising that no lives should be lost due to preventable collapses. Nearly 16 million residents in his division are considered at risk.

Residents have been advised to limit travel and promptly report any signs of flooding or infrastructure damage.

    CM Maryam’s directives:

All government agencies have been instructed by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to maintain vigilance throughout the monsoon season.

Traffic police, WASA, PDMA, Rescue 1122, and local government have been instructed to stay on the ground and help local residents.

Commissioners and deputy commissioners have been instructed to monitor water drainage closely, and traffic police have been tasked with developing contingency plans to prevent gridlocks in waterlogged areas.

  • Sanaullah warns Imran Khan’s sons may be arrested if they come to protest in Pakistan

Sanaullah warns Imran Khan’s sons may be arrested if they come to protest in Pakistan

Advisor to Prime Minister (PM) on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah on Tuesday cautioned that if Suleman Khan and Qasim Khan, sons of jailed former premier Imran Khan, come to Pakistan to lead the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) scheduled protest on August 5, they will be arrested.

Appearing on a private media outlet, Sanaullah sternly asked why Imran Khan’s sons would not be arrested if they came to join the “violent protest”, warning that they would be in trouble.

On being asked by the host about why Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) top brass Rana Sanaullah thinks that the August 5 protest would be violent, Sanaullah said, “After May 9… who would believe that protest will not be violent?”

When further asked whether PTI will not be allowed at all to stage protests, Sanaullah said, “Yes, PTI will not be allowed” to do so, adding that they will only gather on roads for violent protests.

Speaking to reporters outside Adiala Jail Rawalpindi on Tuesday, Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan stated that her brother intends to lead a protest movement from jail against the 26th Constitutional Amendment, while his sons will join the campaign after returning from the United States (US).

“Imran Khan’s sons, Qasim and Sulaiman, will first go to the United States to raise awareness about the injustices faced by their father, and then they will take part in the movement being launched in Pakistan. Imran Khan has been informed of this,” she said.

She added, “People must come out for themselves, for democracy, for the rule of law, and against the 26th Amendment. Anyone who cannot bear the weight of this movement should step aside now.”

Last week, PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram told a leading English daily that his party first postponed the nationwide protests due to the Iran-Israel war, then it delayed it out of respect for Muharram.

The PTI spokesperson stated that in the first phase, demonstrations would be held in provinces and districts.

When asked about Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s statement that he will carry weapons to the protest, Akram said Gandapur was talking about self-defense. “What the chief minister meant was that everybody has the right to self-defence,” he added.

The PTI spokesperson further claimed the PTI patron-in-chief had directed Gandapur to lead the protest.

  • Messi-Ronaldo reunion on the cards as Saudi club makes bold move

Messi-Ronaldo reunion on the cards as Saudi club makes bold move

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Saudi Pro League could soon see his biggest rival join him, as Saudi club Al-Ahli has reportedly made a surprising offer to Lionel Messi.

Messi’s current contract with Inter Miami runs until the end of 2025, but uncertainty about his future has stirred buzz after Al-Ahli’s approach. The news has given supporters hope that they might witness the two legends face off on the same stage again.

Cristiano Ronaldo is already a star player for Saudi club Al-Nassr and recently extended his contract by another two years. On June 26, Al-Nassr confirmed that Ronaldo will remain with the club until 2026.

Earlier this year, there were rumours that Ronaldo might join another team for the FIFA Club World Cup, but he denied those reports, which had disappointed many fans. Now, the effort to bring Messi to Saudi Arabia has revived those dreams.

Although Al-Ahli has confirmed making the offer, details about the possible salary or other benefits have not been revealed yet. However, it is expected that the Saudi club will put forward a highly attractive financial package to convince Messi.

Both Messi and Ronaldo are now looking towards the FIFA World Cup 2026, which could be the last major international tournament of their careers.

If Messi accepts the offer to join the Saudi Pro League, it will create a historic moment for football, giving fans around the world another chance to enjoy the legendary Messi versus Ronaldo rivalry.

  • Babar, Rizwan, Shaheen join Karachi training camp

Babar, Rizwan, Shaheen join Karachi training camp

The Pakistan Cricket Board has included Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi in the national white-ball training camp in Karachi, indicating they are still in plans for future matches.

The three senior players are not part of the 15-member squad travelling for the upcoming T20I tour but will train alongside the team. The PCB announced on Tuesday that they have been added as extra members of the training group, which will prepare at the National Bank Stadium from July 9 to 15. All players are expected to report today.

This move suggests that Babar, Rizwan and Shaheen could return for Pakistan’s next series, possibly against the West Indies if the ODIs go ahead. With no international cricket for nearly a month, and the players out of action for even longer, the camp will help them stay match-ready for a quick comeback.

Naseem Shah and Wasim Jr have also been included in the camp to continue their fitness work, despite not making the touring squad for Bangladesh.

The PCB is trying to build a fresh T20I side while keeping senior players involved to guide younger talent. Although rotation has given new faces a chance, the presence of Babar, Rizwan and Shaheen in the camp shows the experienced core is still very much part of Pakistan’s future plans.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Pakistan men’s cricket team selection committee announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Bangladesh.

The 15-member squad for the Bangladesh series includes: Salman Ali Agha (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Ahmed Daniyal, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Hassan Nawaz, Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Haris (wk), Mohammad Nawaz, Sahibzada Farhan (wk), Saim Ayub, Salman Mirza, and Sufyan Moqim.
