Robber tricks man with fake bomb, loots his home in Lahore

A unique incident of robbery has taken place in Lahore, where a robber tricked a man with a fake bomb and looted his home.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) lodged at the Shalimar Police Station on Monday, the complainant, Syed Hassan Shahzad, stated that the incident occurred on Saturday while he was on his way to work near Setha Bagicha Wala.

“A man stopped me at Setha Bagicha Wala, asking for an address. When I told him I didn’t know, he suddenly placed a box-shaped device in my pocket and claimed it was a remote-controlled bomb which he could detonate at any time. He told me to silently let go of my home and hand over my valuables,” the FIR reads.

The FIR further noted that upon reaching his home, the complainant gave the robber two tolas of gold, including a nose ring, earrings, studs, and four rings. He also handed over cash amounting to PKR 66,870, along with a wallet containing his ATM card, ID card, and job card.

“The CCTV footage of the street has also been attached with the application,” stated the FIR, urging the police to initiate an inquiry against the robber.

  • Real Madrid win at Getafe to keep La Liga title hopes alive

Real Madrid win at Getafe to keep La Liga title hopes alive

Arda Guler struck the only goal as Real Madrid won 1-0 at Getafe on Wednesday to claw back to within four points of La Liga leaders Barcelona.

The young Turkey international fired in from outside the area midway through the first half as Carlo Ancelotti’s side stayed in title contention after Barcelona won by the same scoreline at Mallorca on Tuesday.

Arch-rivals Madrid and Barcelona will meet in the Copa del Rey final in Seville on Saturday, with Kylian Mbappe poised to return from injury for the weekend Clasico — one of two remaining this season. The clubs are also due to meet in the league on May 11.

However, the win over Getafe may have come at a cost to Madrid with David Alaba and Eduardo Camavinga both forced off.

“We’ll see what they have tomorrow, but I think they’re both suffering from muscle soreness. It will certainly be difficult for them to be available on Saturday (to play Barcelona),” said Ancelotti.

In Mbappe’s absence on the outskirts of Madrid, 18-year-old Brazilian striker Endrick made his first league start as England international Jude Bellingham dropped to the bench.

Left-back Fran Garcia twice went close for Madrid, his initial effort palmed away by David Soria before he blasted the rebound high and wide.

It wasn’t long before Guler broke the deadlock after Brahim Diaz looked to have wasted the chance.

Madrid worked the ball back out to Guler, whose powerful 20-yard drive flashed past Soria despite the Getafe goalkeeper getting a hand to it.

Endrick thought he had scored only his second La Liga goal after being put through by Vinicius Junior, but Soria took the sting out of his shot and Djene cleared off the line.

    Courtois preserves win

Getafe created opportunities of their own, the best of which fell in the second half to an unmarked Mauro Arambarri who dragged wide with only Thibaut Courtois to beat.

Courtois came to Madrid’s rescue in stoppage time as he smothered inside his six-yard box after Peter and Juanmi tried to force the ball home from close range.

Getafe substitute Alvaro Rodriguez, who is on loan from Madrid, nearly snatched an equaliser at the death but saw his low shot beaten away by Courtois.

Inaki Williams fired Athletic Bilbao to a 1-0 home win over Las Palmas earlier on Wednesday to strengthen their chances of direct qualification for next season’s Champions League.

The Basque side sit fourth with five games to go, eight points clear of fifth-placed Villarreal who suffered a 3-0 defeat at Celta Vigo.

Bilbao also have a Europa League semi-final against Manchester United to come, and should they win that they will play the final in their home stadium.

Five La Liga sides qualify for the Champions League this season. Sixth-placed Betis are a point behind Villarreal ahead of their encounter with rock-bottom Valladolid on Thursday.

A fifth-minute goal from the elder Williams brother after he turned a defender in the box and side-footed home with the outside of his boot was enough for all three points.

Bilbao needed two sharp saves from Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon before half-time as relegation-threatened Las Palmas went down fighting.

Alaves climbed out of the bottom three at the expense of Las Palmas with a 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad.

  • Shadab Khan makes history in PSL

Shadab Khan makes history in PSL

Islamabad United captain Shadab Khan has made history in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) by becoming the first-ever spinner to take 100 wickets in the tournament.

Shadab reached this milestone during a match against Multan Sultans in PSL 10 when he dismissed their captain, Mohammad Rizwan, to complete his 100th wicket.

This achievement makes Shadab the fourth bowler overall and the first spinner to claim 100 wickets in PSL history. He now ranks fourth on the all-time leading wicket-takers list.

At the top are Karachi Kings’ vice-captain Hasan Ali with 118 wickets, followed by Wahab Riaz (113), Shaheen Shah Afridi (109), and Shadab Khan (100). Faheem Ashraf completes the top five with 79 wickets.

Meanwhile, Islamabad United continued their strong performance in PSL 10, defeating Multan Sultans by seven wickets on their home ground. With five wins from five matches, Islamabad United is currently at the top of the PSL 10 points table.

  • ‘I kept mum to protect my own’: Maria B breaks silence on influencer payment controversy

‘I kept mum to protect my own’: Maria B breaks silence on influencer payment controversy

Pakistani designer Maria B has finally broken her silence after days of online backlash over an influencer payment dispute, and she’s taking the matter to court.

In a video posted on Instagram, Maria B addressed the issue directly, sharing her side of the story and defending her team.

Her caption read, “I was quiet for a reason… but now that we are going to court… here you go.”

The designer revealed that a junior team member, a new PR girl, was handling communications when the misunderstanding happened.

“One of these influencers reached out, said she loved our brand, and wanted to collaborate,” Maria B explained in her video. “I handed over the conversation to a young team member. A mistake was made. A couple of hundred dollars were involved, but it was never about not paying. It was just a delay.”

She added that the influencer also kept a pair of clothes, and clarified that no one from her team ever refused to pay.

“We work with thousands of influencers. Do you really think we couldn’t pay a few hundred dollars?” she said. “My team even reached out and asked the influencer not to make it public, but she posted a video anyway.”

Maria B said she chose silence to protect her employee, who was already under immense pressure from the backlash.

“She’s human, she made a mistake. I wasn’t going to throw her under the bus,” she added.

Earlier, influencer Türkan Atay had accused Maria B of unprofessional behaviour and non-payment after a shoot in Turkey. She claimed she was paid a lump sum despite clearly stating she charged per dress, as she was covering all location costs herself.

Türkan later posted screenshots of their conversation and alleged that Maria B deleted her messages to avoid accountability.

“Why didn’t you pay our money? Why delete the chats?” Türkan asked in her response video.

Maria B’s brand had released a now-deleted statement saying: “There was a misunderstanding, but the influencer chose to make a defaming reel instead of resolving the matter in a meeting.”

The controversy didn’t stop there. Many online users and activists, including Leena Ghani, criticised Maria B for hiding behind public causes while neglecting ethical business practices.

“Speaking up for Palestine while silencing and exploiting a Turkish creator that’s hypocrisy,” Leena posted.

With the issue possibly heading to court, Maria B’s response has stirred even more debate. While some fans support her, others believe it’s time big brands take real accountability.

  • India refuses to play any form of cricket with Pakistan: reports

India refuses to play any form of cricket with Pakistan: reports

Politics is once again hindering cricket, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has refused to engage in any form of cricket with Pakistan following a terrorist attack in the Indian-occupied region of Pahalgam, Kashmir.

According to Indian media reports, the decision comes under pressure from the Indian government. The BCCI stated that, considering the Pahalgam incident and the current strained diplomatic ties between India and Pakistan, no bilateral cricket matches will be held with Pakistan at any level.

A spokesperson for the Indian board cited security concerns as the primary reason behind the decision and issued a veiled warning that even upcoming India-Pakistan matches in ICC tournaments could be reconsidered.

The terrorist attack took place on Tuesday, April 22, in Pahalgam, located in Indian-occupied Kashmir, claiming the lives of 26 tourists. Without waiting for a formal investigation, India immediately blamed Pakistan for the incident. The BCCI then announced a complete boycott of cricketing ties with Pakistan, reportedly acting on instructions from the government.

This decision has now cast a shadow over major international tournaments such as the Asia Cup and the ICC Champions Trophy, both of which could potentially host high-profile India-Pakistan clashes.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has not issued any official response to the BCCI’s unilateral move.

The last bilateral ODI series between India and Pakistan was held in 2012. Since then, the two sides have only faced each other in multi-nation tournaments, such as those organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

  • Police Officers Who Fail Background Checks to Be Automatically Sacked: A Major Shift in Policing

Police Officers Who Fail Background Checks to Be Automatically Sacked: A Major Shift in Policing

In a significant shift in policing policy, police officers who fail background checks will now be automatically dismissed from their positions starting May 14, 2025. This reform is aimed at addressing a major loophole in the system, which has allowed officers who fail vetting procedures to continue serving in the force despite failing to meet essential standards. The new legislation, announced by Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley, aims to close what he has described as a “glaring gap” in the law. This gap previously allowed officers who were unfit to hold the necessary vetting clearance to remain on duty, often continuing to receive full pay while being a potential risk to both the public and their colleagues.

The Importance of Police Background Checks

Police background checks have always been a critical part of ensuring that those in positions of power can be trusted to act with integrity. Officers have access to vast powers, and it is essential that they can be trusted to use these powers responsibly and ethically. The new reforms will make it a legal requirement for all serving officers to pass background checks and vetting procedures, reinforcing the need for trust and transparency in the police force. Previously, officers who failed these checks due to reasons ranging from accusations of sexual abuse or domestic violence to other misconduct could remain on the force. This issue became glaringly apparent after cases like that of Sergeant Lino Di Maria, who challenged the removal of his vetting despite allegations. The High Court found that he had no case to answer regarding misconduct, highlighting the gaps in the system that could not adequately address these concerns.

    Rebuilding Public Trust in Policing

For many members of the public, it has been a shock to learn that officers could fail background checks but still remain in their jobs. Dame Diana Johnson, the Policing Minister, remarked that the public would be “quite shocked” to discover that there was no mechanism to remove officers who fail these essential checks and are deemed a risk. The implementation of this reform is expected to help rebuild public trust in the police force. Sir Mark Rowley emphasized that the ability to pass police background checks should be the most basic indicator of whether an officer is fit to hold the extensive and often intrusive powers given to police officers. For the vast majority of police officers who work tirelessly and with integrity, the new law will offer reassurance that those who fail to meet these standards will no longer be allowed to remain in their positions.

A Step Toward Stronger National Standards

While this change in legislation focuses on immediate vetting failures, the Home Office plans to introduce further measures to strengthen the police background check system. One of these measures will be to introduce stricter requirements for suspending officers who are under investigation for serious allegations, particularly those related to violence against women and girls. The Home Office also plans to raise the national standards for police background checks, ensuring that the process is robust enough to screen out individuals who may pose a risk before they even join the force. This is an essential step in improving the quality and trustworthiness of police officers, as vetting is a crucial part of the recruitment process.

    The Legal Impact and Challenges

The reform is not without its legal challenges. In February, Sergeant Lino Di Maria, a Met Police officer, won a legal battle after his vetting was removed due to allegations of sexual misconduct, which he denies. The High Court ruled that his vetting could not be removed without proof of the misconduct. The ruling highlighted a critical gap in the current system, one that the new legislation is designed to fix. The Metropolitan Police has since been granted leave to appeal the decision, as it is considered a matter of public importance. This legal challenge also brings to light the delicate balance between the rights of officers and the public’s safety. While officers are entitled to a fair trial and due process, it is equally important that the police force maintains public trust by swiftly removing those who are deemed unfit for duty. The new measures aim to strike that balance by making it easier and quicker to remove officers who fail background checks, but still ensuring that due process is followed.

    Public and Political Reactions

The new vetting reforms have received widespread support from both the public and political leaders. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has expressed her strong backing for the changes, emphasizing that serious cases in recent years have “badly failed all proper policing standards” and undermined public trust. “It is simply not acceptable that officers who are clearly unfit to serve or pose a risk to their colleagues cannot be removed,” she said, reinforcing the importance of these new reforms. The public’s trust in policing has been severely shaken in recent years due to high-profile cases of police misconduct. This reform aims to restore confidence by ensuring that those who are not fit to serve are quickly removed from the force. It is hoped that these changes will help to restore the public’s faith in law enforcement and ensure that officers who are trusted with significant powers are held to the highest standards of conduct.

    The Road Ahead for Policing

The introduction of these new vetting reforms marks a significant step forward in ensuring that police officers are held accountable for their actions. As police background checks become a central focus, the government and police forces are working to improve the vetting process to make sure that only those who meet the highest standards are entrusted with the responsibility of policing. • Jack Wilshere Takes Charge: Norwich City Sacks Thorup, Appoints Former Arsenal Star as Interim Head Coach

Jack Wilshere Takes Charge: Norwich City Sacks Thorup, Appoints Former Arsenal Star as Interim Head Coach

In a significant move, Jack Wilshere has been appointed as the interim head coach of Norwich City FC following the dismissal of Johannes Thorup. This change comes at a time when the Canaries are struggling to maintain their form in the Championship. With Norwich sitting in 14th place and having won only two of their last 14 matches, the club decided to make the managerial change in hopes of improving their fortunes. After a difficult 3-1 defeat to Millwall on Easter Monday, Jack Wilshere steps into the spotlight, taking over for the final two games of the season. The decision marks a new chapter in Wilshere’s managerial journey, as he shifts from his role as a coach to the top job at Norwich.

Jack Wilshere’s Appointment: A Fresh Start

The appointment of Jack Wilshere signals the club’s desire for a fresh start after a difficult stretch under Thorup’s leadership. Thorup, who was hired just last year in May, had a promising start but was unable to turn Norwich’s form around in recent months. With the club’s playoff hopes fading, Norwich’s sporting director, Ben Knapper, said it was necessary to make a change to ensure the team stays competitive. “Whilst we made this appointment with a long-term focus and in line with our wider club strategy and direction, unfortunately recent results and performances have deemed it necessary for us to make a change,” Knapper explained in a statement. Jack Wilshere now faces the task of steering Norwich through the final two matches of the season. The club is hoping that the change in leadership will provide the players with the spark needed to finish the season on a high note.

A Challenging Season for Norwich City

The season started with high hopes for Norwich City, a club with aspirations of returning to the Premier League after being relegated in 2022. However, despite some solid performances, the Canaries have failed to live up to expectations. Norwich currently find themselves 14th in the Championship, far from the playoff spots they had hoped to challenge for. Since the turn of the year, Norwich has won only two of their last 14 matches, including a string of heavy defeats. The loss at Millwall proved to be the final straw for Thorup, as it marked the team’s fourth loss in five matches. With relegation not a serious threat, the club’s primary concern has been maintaining momentum and ensuring they are in a strong position for next season. Now, with Jack Wilshere at the helm, Norwich has a chance to regroup and approach the final two games with a renewed sense of purpose.

    Jack Wilshere’s Coaching Background

Jack Wilshere, best known for his playing career with Arsenal and the England national team, retired from professional football at the age of 30 due to persistent injuries. His playing days were marked by immense potential, but his career was unfortunately plagued by injuries that limited his time on the pitch. Despite his early retirement, Wilshere quickly turned to coaching. Before his appointment at Norwich, Jack Wilshere had a successful spell as the head coach of Arsenal’s Under-18s team. Under his leadership, the young Gunners reached the final of the FA Youth Cup in the 2022–2023 season, showcasing his tactical ability and potential as a future manager. His move to Norwich came when he joined Thorup’s coaching staff in October 2024. Now, as interim head coach, Wilshere will be expected to use his knowledge of the game and his leadership skills to guide Norwich through the final matches of the season. Despite the short-term nature of his appointment, many believe that Jack Wilshere’s coaching abilities will be key to Norwich’s future success.

What Does the Future Hold for Jack Wilshere and Norwich?

Jack Wilshere’s appointment as interim head coach is a significant moment in his managerial career. While his time at the top will be brief for now, it could serve as a valuable stepping stone in his development as a coach. His role at Norwich City could serve as a proving ground, showcasing his tactical acumen and ability to motivate players in a high-pressure environment. For Norwich, the focus will be on finishing the season strong. Although the team is no longer in contention for a playoff spot, ending the season with positive performances will be crucial. If Wilshere can inspire the team to strong finishes, there may be an opportunity for him to secure the role on a more permanent basis. The challenge for Jack Wilshere is to maintain the players’ confidence and to ensure that they are playing for pride in the final matches. Norwich fans will be hoping that Wilshere’s leadership can bring about the kind of change that will spark a new era for the club.

The Players’ Role Under Jack Wilshere

With Jack Wilshere now in charge, the players have an important role to play in the club’s recovery. Many of them have shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season, but consistency has been an issue. Under Wilshere, the expectation is that players will be given the freedom to express themselves on the pitch while also focusing on the tactical discipline needed to secure results. Norwich’s squad includes some talented individuals, and if Wilshere can get the best out of them in the final two games, the club may be able to build momentum heading into the offseason. A strong finish will not only help the team’s morale but also provide a platform for next season’s goals.

    What’s Next for Norwich City?

As the 2025-2026 season approaches, Norwich will need to make some critical decisions about their future. Will Jack Wilshere remain in charge, or will the club seek a new permanent manager? Only time will tell, but his interim period will be crucial in determining the direction the club takes. For Jack Wilshere, this could be the beginning of a long and successful managerial career. Many see him as a future top-tier coach, and the opportunity at Norwich City is his chance to prove he has the skills and qualities to lead a club at a high level. • Hobbycraft Stores Closing: What It Means for the Future of UK High Streets in 2025

Hobbycraft Stores Closing: What It Means for the Future of UK High Streets in 2025

The Hobbycraft stores closing in 2025 have added to a growing wave of store closures across the UK. As major retailers like WHSmith and Hobbycraft struggle with a shift in consumer habits, the closure of physical locations has become an all-too-common headline. With online shopping becoming the preferred method for many consumers, along with high rents and competition from global chains, the retail landscape is changing rapidly. Hobbycraft’s decision to close stores is a significant blow to the UK’s high street, as it reflects broader economic trends that are forcing brands to rethink their business models.

The Struggles Facing Hobbycraft and the UK High Street

In recent years, the UK high street has faced numerous challenges, from the rise of online shopping to the impact of global economic pressures. One major casualty of this shift is Hobbycraft, a well-known name in the world of arts and crafts. As part of its ongoing restructuring, Hobbycraft announced that it would be closing nine stores, with 18 more at risk. This news has left many wondering what the future holds for the craft store chain, as well as for the high streets it once helped to define.

    The Restructuring of Hobbycraft

Hobbycraft’s decision to close stores is part of a larger overhaul by its parent company, Modella Capital. After acquiring the retailer in August 2024, Modella Capital has sought to transform the brand’s operations in order to adapt to the changing retail environment. The store closures are part of the ongoing restructuring efforts, which aim to streamline the company and focus on the most profitable areas of its business. With a decline in foot traffic to traditional brick-and-mortar stores, Hobbycraft is forced to evolve, just like many other high street chains.

    Why Are Hobbycraft Stores Closing?

The closures come as Hobbycraft attempts to adjust to evolving market conditions. Several factors contribute to the decision to close stores:

    1. Rise in Online Shopping: More consumers are opting for online shopping due to convenience, competitive pricing, and the ability to easily compare products across multiple platforms. This trend has made it more difficult for high street stores like Hobbycraft to maintain profitability in their physical locations.

    2. High Rents and Operating Costs: Running physical stores on the UK high street comes with a significant financial burden. With high rent costs, utility bills, and staffing expenses, maintaining multiple locations has become increasingly difficult for smaller retailers, especially in the face of shrinking foot traffic.

    3. Changing Consumer Behavior: As consumer preferences change, many shoppers now prefer to shop from home. Whether it’s buying art supplies, craft kits, or seasonal items, shoppers are more likely to purchase these goods from online retailers, leading to a decline in footfall at stores like Hobbycraft.

    4. Business Restructuring: Modella Capital’s acquisition of Hobbycraft has led to a broader restructuring plan aimed at focusing on more profitable areas of the business. The store closures are part of this strategy to reposition the brand in a way that aligns better with current market trends.

What Does This Mean for the UK High Street?

The closure of Hobbycraft stores is another example of how the UK high street is transforming. Once considered the heart of the community, high streets have been severely impacted by the rise of e-commerce, changing consumer preferences, and high operational costs. This closure is part of a broader pattern of diminishing foot traffic to traditional retail outlets.

As many well-known names in retail continue to close stores, it raises the question of what the future of the high street will look like. Will there be more empty storefronts, or will the high street evolve into a new model that includes a mix of essential services, experiences, and digital offerings? Only time will tell.

The Future of Hobbycraft and Other High Street Stores

While Hobbycraft stores closing is a sad development for both employees and customers, the brand itself is not necessarily on the brink of extinction. As Hobbycraft and other retailers like WHSmith continue to restructure, they are also pivoting toward a more digital-first approach. This could include enhancing their online presence, offering click-and-collect services, and exploring new ways to engage customers in the digital age.

For example, some Hobbycraft locations may be transformed into smaller, experience-focused hubs where customers can attend workshops, take part in craft classes, or buy supplies for home projects. This hybrid model may help the brand retain its presence in the physical retail space while addressing the growing demand for online shopping.

The Wider Impact of Retail Closures

Beyond Hobbycraft, the closures of other high street brands have a broader impact on communities. With many people still relying on physical stores for daily necessities, the closure of a local shop can leave a void. It can affect employment, local economies, and even the vibrancy of town centers.

As Hobbycraft and other retailers like WHSmith close branches, it’s important to consider the ripple effect. The loss of jobs, the disruption to local economies, and the reduction in options for shoppers all contribute to the challenge facing the UK high street. In response, local authorities and business owners must find new ways to revitalize these spaces, whether through offering new services, fostering more community-based events, or creating hybrid retail models that blend the digital and physical worlds.

What’s Next for Hobbycraft and the UK High Street?

The Hobbycraft stores closing in 2025 are a clear indicator of the challenges that the UK high street faces in the modern retail landscape. As brands like Hobbycraft and WHSmith close branches, it’s clear that businesses must adapt to survive. For Hobbycraft, this means focusing on a more digital-first approach and restructuring its operations to focus on the most profitable areas.

As the retail world continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how the likes of Hobbycraft adjust to the shifting tides.
